Background versus Watermark

What is the difference between adding a background or a watermark to a .PDF document header?  They both appear to be the same.  If so, why have two separate features?

They both have a similar dialog (and internally are both implemented using similar structures), but a Background is more limited. You can create Watermarks directly from text and have full control over their position - a Background is just a color or a graphics file loaded as a layer. That's why there are two tools.
While it's true you can place a Watermark behind the page content and make something that looks like a Background, logically it's not the same thing (just as you can put some text at the bottom of the page but it doesn't make it a real "footer").
You can only define one true Watermark and one Background per page, and often document authors want them to behave differently (for example the background may only show on screen but the watermark may only appear on printouts). These days the Background is used less often, as the software used to create PDF files (such as InDesign or Illustrator) is more than capable of exporting multi-layer PDF pages; but despite those layers doing the job of a Background or a Watermark they aren't defined the same way - which is why you can't edit them using the tools in Acrobat.

  • Old PDFs don't accept background or watermark

    I have several old PDFs, created between 1998 and 2002, and I am unable to add a background, watermark, or type text. I select Document => Background => Add/Replace and nothing happens. Same problem with Watermark (I select it; nothing occurs).
    I have Adobe Acrobat 8 professional, version 8.1.1, and I'm working in Windows XP.
    I also tried the typewriter tool, but when I try to save the document, I get the following message: "The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (132)."
    The PDFs can't be regenerated from the original documents. Is there anything I can do to make the PDFs accept a background?
    Thanks for your help!

    Try a save as to a new file name and retry. There may be something going on with the version number. I would not think this would be a problem, but it is all I can think of, except the possibility that there is some security set.

  • Background Image/Watermark

    I've searched the API's and the sample code. I can't seem to find an easy way to set a background image. Seeing as how I am a newbie at this perhaps I just don't know how to work with the classes as well as I thought.
    Any suggestions, code samples or URL's to help with this problem?

  • CSS : background versus background-image

    Why does background and background-image produce different results?

    The background-image property will display a background image. For example:
    body {
         background-image: bg_main.jpg;
    This rule will fill the page with your image, tiling it until the entire page is filled. But what if you did not want the image to repeat? What if you just wanted the image to appear in the right top corner of the page? And you also want to add a color to the background. You would have to add a few more declarations:
    body {
         background-image: url(bg_main.jpg);
         background-repeat: no-repeat;
         background-position: right top;
         background-color: #3cf;
    The background property is a shortcut property that allows you to use a single declaration:
    body {
         background: #3cf url(bg_main.jpg) no-repeat right top;
    It's common practice to use background rather than background-color.
    body {
         background: #fff;
    Any values that are not specified will be set to their defaults. So, for example, you could have something like this:
    body {
         background-image: url(bg_main.jpg);
    This rule will display a background image (bg_main.jpg). But if you add the following rule:
    body {
         background-image: url(bg_main.jpg);
         background: #3cf;
    The second declaration will set all the omitted values to their default states. Since the default for background-image is none, your background image will disappear.
    Get used to using the background shortcut property but be aware of the consequences if you use the background shortcut property with other background properties (which you probable never need to do).

  • Background Image for BIP 'Certificate'

    Hey there,
    Im new to BIP, I ususally lurk over in the OBIEE side.
    Im trying to create a 'certificate' type of report in BIP, I've got it working to an extent, heres what I've done :
    pull in the certificate 'skeleton' image as the background image in MS Word, plot the BIP data fields in the name, date & manager locations on the certificate etc. Repeating Group is set for each row, i get a certificate per user - perfect !
    except....
    the background image looks fine in Word when viewing the page at 100% in 'Print Layout' but the resulting PDF has aligned the picture differently so the location of the text fields I plot in Word is not mirrored in the PDF.
    I should add the background image needs to cover 100% of the page.
    Is there an optimum size for an A4 background ? I know paper sizes are not measured in pixels, but does the PDF generation use a pre-set DPI that I can work from ? Anybody else have probs lining up a background image?
    Bit stuck , I thought this would be the easy bit :-)
    Thanks in advance,
    Alastair

    For those that are interested I've achieved my goal,
    I gave up trying to decipher why small changes to Background images & Watermarks where having a large effect on the PDF output, so I've embedded the picture in the Word template and through trial and error lined them up.
    Im still not happy that what I see in Word is not directly what I see in the PDF, I must have created 50+ previews using the left a bit, left a bit, down a bit , left a bit approach :-) But they now line up at least in the PDF output.
    I'd be interested if anybody knows workarounds, the problem seems to be when you use picture wrapping properties of behind text or in front of text. I guess RTF doesn't support all the Word options (ie text boxes etc) so we are left with the trial and error approach.
    Reminds me of the pain of working with Oracle reports trying to line things up :-) I think I'll stay over in OBIEE land

  • Can't get background images to display on page

    I've been trying to add a background image/watermark to a document. Following the instructions in "Help" I put the image where I want it, and select the command "Move objects to section master." Instantly the image becomes invisible. Even with the opacity slider set at 100% the image is just not to be seen. I can still select it move it back to the document, but of course that's not what I'm trying to accomplish.

    And what color is the background of the Table?
    I am guessing not None.

  • Background Noise Reduction Tips

    I'm new to FCPX, having been a long time iMovie user.
    I'm editing an 90 minute video of a Christmas program (which includes two 30-minute plays) shot in our church last night. All cast members with speaking parts had lapel mics; but there is a lot of competing background noise from small children and babies (some of whom were crying part of the time) in the audience (mostly the first three rows). I realize there's no magic wand that will take all that background noise out, but does anyone have any tips for reducing/minimizing it so viewers can hear the cast members better?
    Thanks.

    One thing is if the audio you are trying to remove sounds the same as what you are trying to keep (like trying to remove people talking in the background versus someone speaking in the foreground), then it gets more tricky.
    I've had good results using SoundSoap.  It's not very expensive and It works as a plug-in for FCP X - fixed an interview with it last week and the results were impressive.  It will take out background noises, hiss, pops, clicks, etc.

  • Service Entry Sheet in ECC 6.0 shipment costing security object?

    Does anyone know what security object is being checked during service entry sheet creation?  When I run the shipment cost create process in foreground (RV56TRSL) VI04, the program creates and settles the shipment cost, but in background only the shipment cost doc creates the settlement remains open (status A) and I get a message:
    You have no authorization for this transaction with movement type 101
    My assumption is a different object is being called in background versus foreground but my traces are not showing me anything useful.
    thank you

    Shipment settlement in ECC 6.0 requires the users to have some version of the MIGO object to prefrom the goods movement.  this is a change from 4.7 and prior.

  • Serious performance issue with LV 7.1 Development Environment

    I'm posting this issue to the forums prior to submitting a bug report to ensure that the problems I'm having are reproducible. To reproduce this bug, you're going to have to be an advanced user with a large project (hundreds to thousands of VIs) as the performance problem is related to the number of VIs loaded.
    The issue is the increasingly poor performance of the LabVIEW 7.1 Development Environment as the number of VIs in memory increases. The actions affected include switching between front panel and diagram, saving a VI, copy and paste, clicking a menu, and the mysterious time spent (compiling? editing the runtime menu? changing the toolbar state?) between pressing the run button and when the code actually starts executing. Scrolling and, interestingly, copying via a control-drag are not affected. Running time of entirely on-diagram code does not seem to be affected.
    These problems are quite severe and significantly decrease my productivity as a programmer. Since they are development environment UI issues, it's been difficult for me to find a good example VI; the best I can do is the attached "LV Speed Test.vi". It doesn't test the issues that affect me most, but it seems to suffer from the same problem.
    This simple VI just shows and hides the menu bar 100 times in a tight for loop. When it is the only VI loaded, it executes in about 350 msec on my machine. (2.4 GHz P-IV/640 MB RAM/Win2k). However, when I load a single project-encompassing VI (let's call it the "giant") that references a total of about 900 user and VI-lib subVIs, the test routine takes almost a minute and half to run...about 240 times slower! I've tried this on my laptop with similar results.
    The problem appears to be related to the *number* of VIs loaded and not the memory utilization. For example, if I close the "giant", and create a new VI ("memhog") that does nothing but initialize a length 20,000,000 array of doubles and stores it in an uninitialized shift register, LabView's overall memory usage (as shown in the task manager) jumps enormously, but LV Speed Test executes in about 450 msec...only slightly slower than with a fresh copy of Labview.
    The problem seems to be related to excessive context switching. The Windows task manager shows over a thirteen hundred page faults occur when "LV Speed Test" is run with the "giant" in the background, versus zero or none when run by itself or when "memhog" has used up 160+MB of space.
    The problem only seems to affect the frontmost window. (Unfortunately, that's where we LV programmers spend all of our time!) If you start "LV Speed Test" and then put "giant" in the foreground "LV Speed Test" runs much faster. In fact, if you use the VI server to put the "giant" VI in the foreground programmatically at the start of "LV Speed Test", execution time drops back to 450 msec, and there are no page faults!
    These results show the issue is not related to video drivers or the Windows virtual memory system. My suspicion is that there is a faulty routine in LV 7.1 that is traversing the entire VI hierarchy every time certain events are thrown in the foreground window. It could be due to a problem with the Windows event tracking system, but this seems less likely.
    I have been programming LV for about 7 years and switched from LV 6.1 to 7.1 about four months ago. I know NI engineers have put thousands of hours developing and testing LV 7.1, but honestly I find myself wishing I had never upgraded from using LV 6.1. (To whomever thought "hide trailing zeros" should be the default for floating point controls...what were you thinking?!)
    I know each new version of LabView causes old-timers like me to grouse that things were better back in the days when we etched our block diagrams on stone tablets, etc., and honestly I'm not going to go back. I am committed to LabView 7.1. I just wish it were not so slow on my big projects!

    Hi,
    I can confirm this behavior. Setting the execution system to "user
    interface" helps a bit, but there is still a big difference.
    I get a feeling it has something to do with window messages, perhaps
    WM_PAINT or something, that is handled differently if a VI is not
    frontmost... But what do I know...
    Don't know if it should be called a bug, but it sure is something that could
    be optimized.
    Regards,
    Wiebe.

  • HELP Trying to add a printable image to a pdf Acro Prof 6

    I've already spent 4 days too many on this project. I've been asked to take this pdf and create one identical for the company. It's a fillable form also so instead of trying to recreate everything from scratch I was able to edit the text and change over everything that I needed to, which wasnt much.
    Except.... I can not get our company logo on the top of the page. I have Acrobat Professional 6. Yesterday I finally thought I solved the problem going under Tools -> Advanced Commenting -> Attach -> Paste from clipboard. But because its just a "comment" when I go to print it wont show up.
    I've been told to just add an image to the Header, yet I am unable to figure out how... Once I'm under this section it only allows for Text, not an image.
    I'm really pulling my hair out here over this... If anyone can please tell me how to add an image to a pdf (which is a fillable form) that when printed will actually show up as well PLEASE HELP.

    I just opened the watermark tool in AA8. I don't have AA6 handy. It has a scaling and location on the page after I select a graphic file to import. It also shows a sample page so I can see how it will display. I do not remember how watermarks worked on AA6. Will try in a bit.
    For AA6, it looks like you can only put in a PDF file. In that case, use a word processor to create the desired result you want for the background (the entire page, not just the logo. Then create a PDF to use for the watermark or background. Open the watermark/background tool and insert your new PDF (not sure if you should use background or watermark - might give both a try and see if that does the job. At least it appears to be what my system suggests. You need to be sure you use the same paper size since AA6 places the whole page you create. You might be able to use other sized, but then you have to deal with centering and such. Unless you have time to play a bit, I would create it the one the same size paper as I have suggested and then it is one less thing to have to work out.

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 Standard fatal error when viewing header

    When I try to view Document - Header & Footer the program will draw the editing window and then has a fatal error which says "Acrobat 8.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close". There is the opportunity to send this info to Microsoft. This also happens when using the Document - Background or Watermark menus. All other parts of the program seem OK.
    I've tried the Repair feature, no difference.
    Any clues?
    Oddly, it works fine on a Win Vista machine, but not on a Win XP SP3 machine.
    Thanks GSpence

    Cure seems to be to replace the newest version of ADMplugin.apl with the version contained in the original package as referenced in the thread 'Acrobat 8.1 Always Crashes with "admplugin.apl" reference??'.

    Hi Guys,
    I had the same problems as the ones you stated above. Tried EVERYTHING ! lol Install / Uninstall with removal of all Adobe physically related files, cleaned the registry... To no avail.... Untill....
    I found the solution !!!!
    The problem is definitely related to the "admplugin.apl" file. For some reason it seems to be corrupted in the 8.1.x updates. Simply find the file in the original 8.0 Professional package (should be in the "Data1.cab" file) and simply copy over the newer file (in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\SPPlugins ).
    Everything should be working well after that (I couldn't have access to "Preferences", "Optimize", "Reduce File Size" even "Search"). I now have a fully fonctional version.
    Hope this post will help out !
    Cheers !

  • Adobe Acrobat Overlay PDF Help

    Is it possible to overlay specific pages within a PDF document?  For example, I have an Excel printout, which is then run through a printer again to print a report from access on the bottom of the same page.  It appears that Acrobat 9 can do this using the Background feature, but it is difficult to control.  Basically, I may have any number of pages, that may need different backgrounds within a whole document.  The problem I run into is if i make a mistake and use the wrong background PDF, when i remove it, it removes every background I may have used in document.  The goal is to streamline a yearly publication that includes pieces from word, excel, access, and visio.  The current situation causes many pages to be fed through the printer as many as 3 times for reports and page numbers.  At the end, I feed the whole paper version back though a copier to PDF it.  Does Acrobat X expand on this feature or is there another Adobe Product I should be looking at to compile this publication.  Thanks

    Acrobat X doesn't add anything to the optional content group (OCG, aka "layer") manipulation features found in earlier versions, so to do anything major with layers you need to use third-party plugins such as ARTS PDF Aerialist Pro.
    If you want to import one PDF page as an OCG on one page of another PDF, you can use the layers pane tools. Open the navigation tab on the left of the Acrobat interface and show the layers pane, then click the tools icon below the word "Layers" and select "Import as layer".
    This will only bring in one page at a time, and OCG operations cannot be undone in Acrobat without a plugin, as Acrobat doesn't recognize the actions of the layers tools as a step on the undo list, nor can you delete a OCG or move content from one OCG to another (aside from flattening them).
    To import the same page as an OCG on every page in a file (or a subset thereof) you should use the watermark or background tools (watermarks can add text too; but they both do the same as the tool on the layers pane, but don't list the new OCG in the stack). If you want to collate-merge two multi-page documents or merge pages of the same document into a stack, you'll need to use a plugin or automate the above steps using a script (though scripted solutions for this type of thing tend to result in a horrible mess).

  • How to embed an illustrator file into a word doc to make a template

    I am trying to make a word template for my company's proposals that we send out to clients. I have created the image in illustrator as an 8.5x11 and saved it for 'web & mobile' use with the highest quality setting. I open the document in microsoft paint, copy everything, and then paste it into the header section of my word doc. I choose the option to bury behind text. My problem is that when I paste from paint into word, the document shrinks and is no longer 8.5x11. This requires me to stretch the image, but it pixelates it beyond what I can allow to be used. Is there an easier way to make a word doc template? I am using Illustrator cs4 and Microsoft 2007 (I know, its really really old).

The picture that you selected is applied as a watermark to the entire document. Tip  If you want to use an object, such as a shape, as a watermark, you can manually paste or insert it into the document. You cannot use the Printed Watermark dialog box to control settings for these objects.

    I am displaying layers based upon windows username. If User B, then Layer B. If Username A, then Layer A. etc. Do you see that is compatible with Acrobat Reader 9? It would appear as if the OCG methods will not work as Reader doesn't support the setIntent OCG object Maybe with another function like backgrounds or watermarks?
    The only thing the layer contains is a picture. Can we get the pictures to display using another method other then OCG?
