Background vs. a normal layer?

What is the point of a Background Layer? How is it different from a normal layer?

Perhaps I didn't read the same info you did. Perhaps what you read was by someone other than the persons who actually wrote the software.
Do you naively believe all the marketing material you read? There are almost always underlying reasons for the way things work that have less to do with what's published than you might think, and more to do with underlying design philosophy spun into "features". In the corporate world the marketeers and sales people always make whatever they can out of what the product does.
Beyond that, I quite clearly identified my note above as opinion.
But it's clear that for whatever reason you feel compelled to heckle me. Keep it up, I enjoy your attention.

Motions layers - not as background but normal layer ?

All the menus, I can see who is in Encore with "motions" is this layer a background, How do I create a layer, with a "motion", as a normal layer so I can scale my "Motion" and don't as an backgrundslayer..?

And, any Scaling, or other editing of the Motion Background will need to be done in your NLE, like PrPro.
Now, depending on what you want to do, you can create what appears to be a PiP in the Menu, but this is PiP done in the NLE, and includes a still image (that appears to be the Menu's Background). Any animation, say this PiP scaling up, or moving in, will need to be done in the NLE. In this case, you would do an AV file that would be Play First, and then it would Link to the Menu, with whatever you wished for the real Menu Background. Lot's of little tricks, but we'd need to know exactly what you want to happen, or "appear" to happen. Much of what we see in DVD Menus is really an illusion.

Can i duplicate a raw smart object to normal layer?

i have a problem
i tried yesterday the all day to do this , diplicate a raw smart object to normal layer
i mean i open a raw file with camera raw
i click shift + open
i have a raw smart object
i click 2 to the smart object (i can edit with camera raw)
now i have 1 layer (smart object with the camera raw settings
can i duplicate this smart object to a normal layer??
my purpose is
have 3 o 4 layer of the same photo with different camera raw settings

I need a vector smart logo that is on a PSD layer as a vector file in illustrator so I can plot cut on a vinyl cutter. How can I make sure the logo transfers as .ai at the exact size showen in the Photoshop document? I remember doiing this a few years ago but forgot the proceedure. It's probably a very easy step and once I have the answer I'll say "oh that's right I remember now" The export path to Ilustrator only gives me the saved paths in this document.

What's in the comp? A solid? A layer with an effect applied? More than likely, you're looking at a layer in the wireframe view. I forget where they hide the wireframe toggle button in the more recent versions.

i used photoshop to open a photo with a person and background and delete the background so that now it's white with the person still fully intact.
I open the file in and lay this image layer on top of another video layer track in fcut express and hoped that the background would be gone so it would look like my person is in the movie. I saved the pic as JPEG even tried it with GIF and then selected the SCREEN option or the subract or the alpha and nothing makes it transparent .how?

yes, use psd (tiff or png) format. jpg will not work.
also, make sure you delete the "background" layer in photoshop. the picture should appear then sitting on a checkerboard indicating transparency. the background layer in photoshop by itself is not transparent by default.

Pull white background from pattern for layer.

Hello, I have a simple clothing pattern I want to make a 3d Texture from which I can do however what I would like to do is make a layer out of the white background around the template with the marked pattern areas as transparents so after I paint the main template clothing ares, I can place the white background with transparent areas back in as a layer to cover where I paint or fill over the marked template area. Is this possible, if so, how?
I am working in CS5 Extended.

Kimberly, here is a simple method to make the cutouts slightly large so that white seams don't appear on the textured model. Make sure to use the settings that are highlighted in the screenshots.
Open the t-shirt template file
Magic Wand Tool
Click anywhere in the big white area surrounding the t-shirt pieces.
Select > Modify > Contract… try 2 pixels at first
Press Cmd+J (Ctrl+J on Windows) to copy the selection to a new layer.
Hide or remove the original layer.

Down load in Background processing on presentation layer

There is a difference between Canvas Size and layers. Only the background layer size is directly effective by Canvas Size because it does not support transparency so a background layer will have pixels added and deleted by the use of Canvas Size all other layers sizes and pixels are not changed all that changes are those layers boundaries. Layer Areas over the canvas is rendered in the composite view. When used canvas size the height and with size are set canvas can be added, removed or left the as is for the documents. The anchor point setting is used for the existing layers this effects the locations of where canvas is added or removed from the document. Method resizeCanvas ([width][, height][, anchor])
The way to effect canvas size and the size of all layers is to crop. crop (bounds [, angle] [, width] [, height]). Only bounds is required and is your [left, top, right, bottom].
Or is your (Top, Left, Right, Bottom, Center) referring to the anchor point setting if so you would need four more radio buttons for the are nine position the anchor point can have or are you special caseing your canvas size to only support five anchor points. I see no reasion you would have any problem your script could easly set the anchor point using only five radio buttons for the resizeCanvas method and use a single size setting for both width and height. Remember canvas size will crop as well as add pixels to a bracground layer. If you do not want to do that convert the background to a normal layer first. You could also use a pulldown menu for the anchor point setting. I don't really know javascript I'm just a fearless hacker. I created a Photo Collage Toolkit the package contains several scripts that has oprion a pulldown menu for positioning text stamps in one of nine positions. How do I make my movies pop up as a layer over a dimmed background?

I'd like my movies to pop up on their own layer when the button is selected. I'm using Flash CC and have tried googling for a tutorial but the only video I came across was one published in 2008 that requires a plug-in. Do I need a plug-in for this feature? Is there a tutorial I have missed that provides videos of step-by-step instructions? Thanks in advance!

I understand layering. My question involves the backgrounds when movies play. When a person clicks a button and the movie pops up, the background is now "grayed out" because nothing else is available while the movie is playing.....like the below example. (I'm not using vimeo... this was just a visual example.) Once you exit the movie, the background returns to normal.

Why does the Background Layer unlock itself?

When I open a picture in PS the first layer is a locked background layer. If I start working in PS it changes automatically to an unlocked Layer 0. I want it to stay as an locked background layer. I have used PS for a few years, and just started happening.

With the new version of Photoshop if you work on the background layer and do something like click on the add layer mask icon in the layer palette. Since the background layer does not support transparency Photoshop knows you need to convert the background layer to a normal layer so Photoshop automatically does that for you. If you just paint on the background layer or clear or fill an area, stroke a selection it will remain a background layer with its transparency locked. The Background layer is only partially locked so you can work on it as shown by the un-filled in lock icon on the background layer in the layer palette. If you look here you see layer 2 is unlocked, Layer 1 is fully locked and the background layer is partly locked and has been worked on.

There are 3 types of lock in the PSE
1)Background layer Lock.
2)Transparent Pixel layer lock.
3)Lock all Pixel
Background layer lock - This lock prevents to change layer to a normal layer which can contain both transparent and colored pixel.
Transparent pixel lock - This lock prevents to edit (like apply brush ) on transprent pixel .
Lock all pixels- for both trasnparent and colored pixels.
Background layer lock always depicts by tranparent pixel lock from previous versions to E11. just see the snapshots -

Why when i make any changes on a background layer is it automatically changing to a layer?

i have two computers running cc and one if fine the main one has started doing this and it's very anoying!

The Photoshop Background layer does not support transparency there is only one background layer and its the bottom most layer. A Background layer is not required. If you want to add transparency to the background layer you must first convert the background layer to a normal layer. I the latest release of Photoshop automates that conversion sometimes for example if you add a layer mask to a background layer the background layer is automatically converted to a normal layer. There may be other operations that would also convert a background layer to a normal layer.
Photoshop also also grays out features when the background layer is the current target like free transform....

How to get a layer's background color with AE SDK

Hello,
I am trying to get the color of the background for my current layer but I can't seem to find how to do it.
By background color, I don't mean the application's background color, but the color that shows through if I set the alpha of my pixels to 0.
For example, suppose the composition background is black, I put a green solid on top of it, then put an image on top of the solid and apply my pug-in to the image.
If I set the alpha to zero in my plug-in, the solid's green will show up.
So I want to be able to find out that my background is green.
I already tried using PF_AppGetBgColor() but that returns the application's background color, which is not green in this example.
If you want more details about what I want to do, I have plug-in P1 which sets some pixels to 0-alpha. On top of it I apply another plug-in P2 which reveals 0-alpha pixels by blending them with some color.
What happens now is that the output is the original image's color blended with P2's color (because P1 only modified the pixels' alpha).
What I want is to have the color showing through the transparent pixels of P1 blended with P2's color.
To do that, I would like to be able to set the color of the 0-alpha pixels to the background's color in P1.
Sorry for the long question.

if i understood you correctly, what you're trying to get it the image buffer of the composited layers, beneath the layer with your effect.
if that is correct, then i'm afraid it's next to impossible to do.
when AE renders a composition it doesn't do it bottom to top. it tries to do the opposite actually.
why? because if at a certain point the buffer is fully opaque, then it doesn't need to render what's beneath.
further more, checked out layers change the order rendering, and many other things affect the rendering order of the layers.
besides that, there's no API for accessing intermediate comp buffers. just the final result.
the closest you can get to that without turning the world over, is to use AEGP_GetCompBGColor(),
which would prove useless to you as the image doesn't get composited over that color, unless that's the comp being saved to file.
so why did i say "next to impossible"?
you can turn the world around.
you can write an AEGP of type "artisan". (look at the "arti" sample)
these plug-ins render comps (instead of the "advanced3D" renderer)
an artisan does have intermediate comp results, as it is the one doing the rendering.
so now you can have your artisan save the buffer you need, and deliver it to your effect.
i must warn you that doing this is very very very difficult.
another possible solution is to create a duplicate of the comp in which your effect resides,
erase all layers who's image you don't need, and render that duplicated comp using AEGP_GetReceiptWorld().
if you use this method, you have to supervise the original comp, and apply changes to the duplicate.
yes, that too is difficult to do.
you could make a change in strategy, and apply your effect on an adjustment layer instead.
the input for the adjustment layer is the composited buffer of underlying layers.
then you could get the original sources you wish to process using checked out layer params.
the last solution i can think of is using the sampleImage() expression on a hidden param.
this will give you pixel data from any layer in the comp, but not the composite of the underlying layers.
maybe if you tried sampling an adjustment layers post effects... i don't know. you'll have to try.
this method is very slow, and is also limited to time out, so you can't get a large number of pixels.
the expression will simply fail.
i hope it hasn't been all bad news for you.
maybe of you told more about the plug-in you're developing i could come up with a better plan.
