Backing up 200Gb

Does anybody know how many hours take backing up a database with 200GB of data with RMAN?
What do you think is the more efficient way for baking up 200Gb of data?
Thanks

It's hard to say how long that would take. It depends on a a few factors like if the backup is going to tape or disk, how many channels are you going to use, how fast are your disks or tape drives, etc. If you create incremental backups after a level 0 it will probably speed things up, but recovery can be a bit complicated. You will have to research the best backup procedure for your business.

  • Time Machine - each time backing up 200GB or more

I have Mac Pro with multiple drives installed. It is running the latest version of Snow Leopard.
I have dedicate 2TB Time Machine Drive, that is currently backing up 1.5 TB of data on my machine.
I use multiple machines (six all together) and I have not had this problem on any of my other puters. When Time Machine runs its hourly backups, occasionally it is backing up 200GB, or more, of data - even though I have not been changing, deleting or adding data at that volume. I find it very confusing as to why it is constantly backing up so much data.
Often my oldest backup is from the day before, or maybe two days. Currently oldest backup is from May 10, but after running the latest backup (225GB) it will probably read May 21 (yesterday)
Let me say again, that the work I have done today does not consist of 225GB of data changes. I have been editing photos in PS and LightRoom, but they were already on the hard drive. We are talking about seven image files. So why does TM need to backup 225GB of data?
    Any Thoughts?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
See #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). It lists some common causes of extra-large backups, and shows how to determine just what's being backed-up, so you can find the problem.

  • How can I tell if time machine is actually backing up properly when the calculation of estimated time left is incorrect.

I have recently bought a reburbished iMac ( installed with Mountain Lion) and successfully transferred the content of my old imac ( snow leopard) using migration assistant. This onlt took an 1.5 hours.
I have noe connected up an external USB drive and started a time machine back up to back up 200GB of content.  It has been running for 12 hours and says 4.63 GB of 200 has been done. Now I know that this calculation is not reliable and USB can get choked but how do I know if the process is actually running ok and how long to wait before giving up. The time machine icon is moving around.
Please please any help would be appeciated - I want to get using my new Mac.

  • Time Capsule Disconnects OTHER devices on wireless network during backup?

    Hi everyone,
I need help here. I have a 500gb TC as my wireless base station as well as my backup for a new-ish 2.8 iMac. I have 2 laptops on the network as well as 2 airport express stations that just serve speakers. The house is a small 1-floor 3-bedroom.
Every time my iMac does a time machine backup (which is often), the airport express bricks lose their music streams, and the laptops (a original Macbook Pro and a previous gen. MacBook) lose their internet and network connection - BUT they still show full signal strength and show that they are connected to the network.
The only thing that seems to "solve" it is for me to turn my computer airport off then back on and wait for it to re-join the network.
I have tried resetting my Time capsule - which only resulted in a VERY slow initial backup which took over 2 days to back up 200gb worth of data and then back to the same problem.
I have the TC set up as a mixed n/b/g network, and I have one express brick extending the network ('cause I thought a weak signal might be the problem but it appears not), and the other brick joining the network. All firmware/ software is up to date. Any help is appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    jb

    jwbeaton,
While it doesn't directly relate to your connectivity issue, might I suggest not storing other files on the TC. Use and external disk attached to the TC via USB.
*Using a Time Machine Hard Disk (or Time Capsule) for Other Files*
Here is Apples’ line on this: “Time Machine works best if you use your backup disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your backup disk, Time Machine won’t back up those files, and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced.” [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11430.html]
This hasn't stopped some from successfully partitioning Time Machine hard disks and storing data on the other partition. As long as the Time Machine backup has its' own partition, you avoid any potential opportunities for conflict.
However, this is not an option for Time Capsule users as there is no easy way of partitioning the Time Capsules’ internal hard disk without elaborate effort. Granted, the Time Capsule is advertised as being able to perform both as a Time Machine backup destination and as a shared network drive [Apple Store (U.S.) - Time Capsule - 500 GB]
Nevertheless, some have experienced problems with maintaining files/folders occupying the same disk as Time Machine backups. In this case, they use the Time Capsule hard disk solely for Time Machine backups. Then attach an external hard disk to the Time Capsules USB port and store additional files there. This added disk will still be available to all Macs that can access the Time Capsule. (Note though, that any USB disks attached to the USB port of the Time Capsule can not then be backed up to the Time Capsule via Time Machine. Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device to another remote device.)
    Hope this is helpful.
    Cheers!

  • I really need some decent TC advice re: constant breakdown

My eyes are spinning from the literally thousands of posts I've read on Time Capsules, problems and possible solutions.
Now I am more asking, are they really worth having?
I have had a TC for just over one month. It took hours to get set up properly, I had to go buy Ethernet cables in the end, eventually I got it working.
It backed stuff up for around 1 week, then I hit the seemingly common forever "preparing" stage, it wouldn't back up again after this.
So I deleted all TC contents (which of course totally defeats the object of backing up) and re-backed up 200GB of data via Ethernet.
Then it was ok for about another week, until we hit the forever "preparing" stage again.
So I deleted, re-backed up and off we went again.
This week, my 4/5th week of having it, its gone back to forever "preparing".
PLEASE can anyone tell me, do these TC's actually work?? And if it gets to this stage of constant preparing, is there a way to fix it so that it carries on as normal??
I just know when I walk back in to Apple with no receipt and box etc they are gonna tell me to shove off. £200 down the drain if you ask me at the moment :o(
Any advice or help would be very much appreciated, I am going insane here!! :o)

Can't help you, sorry. I have a two Time Capsule network and have tried TM on TC and external drives with different scenarios over this past year without any problems what so ever I do feel that a well setup and configured network is the key to get reliability from these types of devices.
So in the end I use Time Capsule under the Finder and afp, its like a home server which I can access on my home network and over the internet when I'm out of state. I don't burn to disc or use flash drives anymore because of the above method.
Regarding Time Machine I use it to back up my other Macs onto firewire drives; I've never felt TC is the way to go to hold valuable information over the long haul.

  • I purchased 200GB of storage.  I have backed up the storage, yet when I try to take a photo I am told there is not enough available storage.

How do I use icloud to store content?

And in general.  keep an eye on your storage in Settings => General => About.
Delete old emails when you can, especially those with attachments.  Delete old text messages, again especially those with attachments.
Dump old programs that you don't use.
Like razmee said, move pics and videos off your phone when you can.  Delete those bad pictures in your camera roll that are just taking up space.
Look for programs like PhoneClean that you can use on your computer that will go in and delete all the cruft that gets left behind by apps that don't close properly.
This will also help your phone run better as well.

  • I recently purchase macbook air with OS 10.10.2. I want to use my Seagate external backup plus hard drive for time machine back up. How to partition my 1TB Seagate back up plus hard drive for use with mac and windows pc?

    Hi All,
I recently purchased 13" Macbook Air with OS 10.10.2. I want to use my 1TB Seagate backup plus external hard drive as time machine and my windows 7 pc. Please suggest a method. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I strongly recommend having an external drive dedicated solely for TimeMachine. You could partition the drive but if something goes wrong you risk losing the data on both partitions. Should you decide to go ahead with splitting the drive for two different uses you’ll need to partition the drive either using the Mac’s built in Disk Utility program or Windows utility. I believe the built in Windows disk utility program will destroy the current partition and erase the data that’s on it - I use a third party Windows disk utility program for partitioning and it allows for non-destructive partitioning but warns to back up data first just in case. Apple’s Disk Utility can do non-destructive partitions but I don’t recall every trying to do a non-destructive partition on a disk originally formatted for Windows using it. Again - back up that data just in case.
Finally, your TimeMachine drive should be at least 1.5 times (I prefer 2 times) the size of the data you expect to be backing up a year or two from now.  In other words, if you currently are using 50GB of your computer’s drive but expect to begin purchasing Mac software to replace software on your Windows computer and if you expect to be putting photos, music, and other data on it you might expect that two years from now you’ll have 100GB of stuff on the drive. So a 200GB partition is the smallest size you’d want.  TM’s backup scheme keeps multiple copies of data as it changes so the extra room is important for this scheme.

  • IPhone 5 Back up failure to iCloud

    Hi there
I have an iPhone 5 running IOS 7.0.3. I am running out of capacity on the phone so need to back up to iCloud, however, whenever I do it hangs with 'Estimating time remaining' then states that the back up has failed. It backs up to Mac absolutely perfectly. I've plugged in, locked, connected to wifi etc as required but cannot seem to engage a successful back up. I have 200gb of space on iCloud so that isn't the issue, any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • Multiple iPhoto libraries on my ext hard drive back up

Hi I have a problem with multiple iPhoto libraries on my ext hard drive back up  They are different sizes and large 120gb  Is there any way I can rationalise the libraries without the risk of losing data? My iPhoto library on the Mac appears to be complete but with >200gb of photos I cannot be sure.

I upgraded to Lion OS and suffered multiple crashes necessitating a complete rebuild of the system - reformat the main hard drive and install Lion OS from a disk  In an effort to be absolutely sure I didn't lose data I have been overenthusiastic in transferring photos to the backup disk dragging and dropping files that contained images as well as a full transfer of "mymac" before reformating.  Time machine backup was not realistic as this was the one operation which caused most of the "hangs"  System now appears to be working well with Lion OS but I have masses of duplicate jpeg files in multiple folders and libraries - I am considering purchasing Duplicate Annihilator to deal with the duplicates then perhaps I should try to merge the libraries with iPhoto manager?

  • Could someone please tell me the fastest, cheapest, simplest way to back up all my data (photos and music) thanks!

Well I am heading in to the
apple services store to collect my computer which went dead in my power cut 10 days ago (discussed in my last post), and has since been fixed with new power supply.  My question is - what's the cheapest and easiest way for me to back-up all my data (several thousand photos, and similar number of songs on iTunes, and a few quicktime video files)  Is there a product I can buy to save it on - I have no idea how many gigs etc, that will be? and what I need to buy to do so, and finally, how easy/fast will it be to save everything.... this is indeed a very simple thing, I am sure, but I have never done it before, just saved odd bits on pen drives, etc.....  The repair is costing over $400 - and as it's an old imac, aside from the fact it has all of Final Cut Pro Studio on it - it's hardly worth the repair price.... what I want though is to save everything as cheaply and simply as possible - what do I need to buy and how (in simple language please) do I save it... Many many thanks if anyone can put this in simple language for me... Cheers

I agree with BGreg about OWC, great people and service, quality products and competitive prices. Not bigbox sell cheap stuff prices but fair prices. Like him I also like cloning with SuperDuper! or CCC. For most users CCC is perfect - SuperDuper! adds some extras that techs like.
But I'll also add a vote for Apple's own TimeMachine. It is an automatic backup system that runs every hour; the first backup takes a while and the rest not very long because they are backing up only the chances made in the last hour. Due to its schema, TimeMachine is most effective with a backup drive that is 2-3 times larger than your backup set. If you are using 200GB of your 500GB drive, then your TimeMachine backup drive should be at least 400GB and preferably closer to 600GB.
The two backup schemes are different and having two different backups is a very good idea - backup drives have been known to die . The clone's advantage is that it is a bootable system disk - if your computer's drive dies you can boot with it and keep working until you get the computer repaired. If your computer's drive gets messed up you can boot with the clone and try to repair it or at least recover some of the most recent files that aren't on the clone. (Which happens to be one of the disadvantages of a clone - people tend to reclone somewhat infrequently.) Having TimeMachine means you have very recent backups.
So if you intend to keep using this computer - TimeMachine might be the better choice - or at least another consideration. If you are just grabbing data - CCC will do the trick best.

  • Family Share iCloud Data for iCloud Back ups

Is there a way that I can share my 200GB of iCloud space with my sisters to have them back up to my shared iCloud?  They go over the 5 free GB and I have 180GB free to use.  I feel that it is stupid for them to each pay more a month when I have plenty to go around.
    Thanks.

    Hello 13hartc,
no, unfortunately, iCloud storage cannot be shared between different iCloud accounts.

  • Converting "Apple Lossless" back to "AAC" - More than 1 track at a time...

    Hello,
Short version: I have hundreds of tracks that need to "Create AAC Version", and I can't right-click 8,536 songs in my library one at a time to find them all.  Is there a method to sweep the entire library and convert all songs to this format if they are not already?
The problem with this is it still creates a duplicate of the song and the other original needs to be deleted.
Note - the file name changing (it appends a "1" on the M4A file), the "tag" displayed in iTunes retains the song name.
    Thanks!,
    Joseph
Long version:  For the benefit of people facing the same problem and combing the forums for help, here's the rest of the story...
I'm not entirely sure when this changed (and I've reset my Import settings back to AAC 128-bit now), but I've managed to import a good number of CDs at this higher quality "Apple Lossless" format.  Essentially, that's overkill - I listen to an iPod classic with headphones the majority of the time (98%) and I won't hear the difference.
CHECK:  Edit | Preferences | "General" tab | "Import Settings" button
Essentially my hard-drive space has been disappearing at a rapid rate.  I downloaded a tool (WinDarStat) and found my iTunes folder is 50% of my 200GB used.  (Yes, I'm on an older laptop -- HD=220GB -- and am getting the 'out of space' warnings.)  I found some folders for recent CDs were over 1GB alone and started digging.
I happend to have REM's studio "Man on the Moon" on here twice.  The IN TIME version is AAC 128-bit and only 4.9MB in size, whereas the PART LIES version is Apple Lossless 1068-bit and 8x's larger at 39.9MB.
If you right-click a track, it provides option to "Create [other] version.", depending on going to/from ACC to Lossless or vice-versa.
Once I did this for "Man on the Moon", I got 75% of the song's space back ... from approximately 40MB to 11MB.
It does create a second copy of the song, so the original has to be deleted - be certain to "Move the song to the Recycle Bin" when warned.
A better option - all be it more time consuming - is to re-import the CDs.

For backup see this user tip.
The Create <Format> version tool uses whatever the current import settings are.
You can create a playlist of things that need converting as Ed says above.
To ease the conversion process, and keep your current ratings, playcounts, and playlist membership, plus recyle the old files automatically see my script ConvertFormat. Test on say a single album first to make sure it works as you expect/need.

  • UNLIMITED DATA PLANS! PLEASE BRING IT BACK VERIZON TO EVERYONE!

I think Verizon should bring back the Unlimited Data Plans because, many students uses so much Data for Videos for their homework and Videos takes up so much Data and there is no way an average family can afford to pay over $100 for a 20GB more Data plan and I think it would nice of Verizon if they would bring back the Unlimited Data Plan around $59/month at least because there are some people that need it for their homes. If you would also offer Unlimited Data Plan to the Mifi service, this would be a big competition with DSL and Cable providers for home internet. When families uses so much Data for Netflix or Rhapsody and Crackle, it takes so much Data and it is important for families to have Unlimited Data Usage for this entertainment. Verizon, I am going to say this, people like me does not like to be limited on how much we use the Internet. I am thankful even on my phone I have the Grandfather Unlimited Data Plan but if you ever take it away from me, I will leave Verizon and switch to Straight Talk. I have many friends I can tell and stir up some stuff with Verizon if this ever happens to me because, my Unlimited Data Plan means so much to me, the only reason I am bringing this up, to help other people who needs it too. I think Verizon has the best Coverage of all than any other provider but all I am asking is, do not take my Unlimited Data Plan from me and please bring it back for other people who needs it. Thanks so much time your time and support. Verizon Wireless Customers, please leave comments, I would love to hear your comments and thanks and have a Great Day!

Why are fixed income families on the most expensive carrier? Let alone owning smartphones.
I don't agree with tiered data either way. I wish they would do like a flat cap of 10gb for x amount of dollars and if you go over that, then you pay more. Put a data cap that no one can realistically hit without absuing, i mean REALLY abusing the service.
There is a disadvantage to unlimited data though, the person who is streaming and downloading all day can ruin it for a whole bunch of people in that area. But hey, they don't care, as long as they get theirs right? On one end, we have the happy user paying 30 bucks a month and doing like 200gb per month, while everyone else in the area has to suffer with sub par speeds because of this one individual.
Normal counter arguments is that the premiums are high, ceo gave him self a raise, vz is in the big profits, unlimited means unlimited no matter what, and a couple others I forget. They're valid points, and i do agree that the ceo could take some of his yearly earnings and put some of it back in the network. At the same time though, aren't projects like building cell towers done on a contract basis normally? So even if he is making ridiculous bank, it would be a moot point if he had already paid for the work to be done to the network.
Government isn't gonna do squat because it's each and every company's right to structure their plans how they wish and charge however much they wish.
Again, complaining doesn't do anything. Disconnect.

  • Why is it taking so long to back up on my external hard drive?

I have a WD 1TB 3.0 USB external hard drive & im transfering 200GB of data.
Why is it taking so long to back up all my data onto my exernal hard drive using time machine?
I turn it on every day for about 12 hours to backup.
I think it will take about 4-5 days to complete, is this normal?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Why is icloud no longer backing up my iPhone 6?

    Hi
Hi, everyone! My iPhone 6 which is running on iOS 8.2 (I believe, I tried the latest update but it was a no go) is no longer backing up to icloud. My phone is 64GB and out of the 200GB of storage I've upgraded to, I still have 147GB's unused. Sorry, correction,it now says 149GB left for usage-why would that number go up??!! I have 3 devices associated with my apple ID, and I know the pass word for that and my icloud account...none of which I have changed since I first created it in 2010. I've finally managed to see some of my Data on icloud.com using a pc running windows 8 with the latest version of iTunes installed (as of April 7th). My problem I suppose is really a three fold question. First, my phone has not backed up to icloud in 7 weeks. Second, I cannot get into my phone because I have forgotten my password for my lock screen( I had changed it to keep out my lovable, but tech addicted children). I unwisely did this shortly after sustaining a concussion, as I healed the password escapes me. That's on me, yet my last backup was feb 18th and I had use and access to my phone into the beginning of March. The third issue is that the computer I used to back up our devices is now  defunct. So far I have desperately tried to remember my password, not working, but my phone does not say disabled. I was able to see wwhom was calling, I could access my notifications from the top and I was also able to utilize the control panel. Now none of those functions work and only numbers show up on my screen-not the names, the contact info. I can answer my phone and call someone as long as they have called and not left any voicemail. Which is something else I can't access-I have visual voicemail-I never set up a password for my voicemail even though it continues to insist I need to enter it now. So I've tried to back my phone up on my computer through iTunes- it won't allow me because I need to enter the phone pass code, ok then lets try just syncing everything, one category at a time, nope because it is associated with another iTunes account- that would be the OWNER-PC that is defunct and I've even made sure to authorize the computer I use now in iTunes. When my phone is plugged in and I go to browse through my device through iTunes, it shows nothing actually on the device? I've never seen that before, although if I browse the summary and the on the top menu my apps, my music, podcasts are then shown to me. I have the photo drive enabled on my actual phone, would that cause my device to show nothing on it? I also tried to restore my phone from within iTunes was directed to disable Find my Phone and still was unable to update or restore. I hesitate to place it in DFU mode for fear of losing everything including over 7000 pictures on the low end 9000 on the high end. It it also possible that my old iPhone 4s which is not connected to any service plan and not able to txt call et cetera, be somehow interfering with what's not being updated into icloud? I have it completely shut down right now, but could the backup problem be related to perhaps when it might try to connect with WiFi and that is what confused any type of back ups for my iPhone 6? I decided to shut my iPhone 4S off completely when I noticed it was trying to call my phone number and name with the most recent contact pic on the 6? I'm hoping I haven't wasted to much of anyone's time, and maybe a few in the community got a chuckle out of my ramblings.... I know after reading over this post or shall I say essay of confusion, I had a laugh. ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED, and I thank you in advance for your time and insights! - Best Regards, TobiLynn a mother on the edge

The Messages app is supposed to grab the information from the "Internet Accounts." Messages has always included the ability to separately add Google, Yahoo, AOL, or other messages accounts; but, it has always grabbed the iCloud account information from the "Internet Accounts" section. Except for now, when the Messages option has disappeared from the iCloud account under "Internet Accounts."
