Backing Up 2nd Data HD To Another HD with Time Machine
Hi, changed my start up disc to a SSD, and moved all data to another HD. I want to back that data drive up to another drive. I don't see how I can do it with Time Machine.
Can Time Machine back up a data only HDD to another HDD, neither have an O/S on it, or should I use Carbon Copy Cloner?
And is Time Machine only for backing up volumes with an O/S on it?

All volumes on internal drives will be backed up, provided they're in Mac OS format. Volumes on an external drive will be backed up if you remove them from the excluded list in the Time Machine preference pane.

Another problem with Time Machine
This is the second time I have experienced the following problem with Time Machine. After 2 months of backups it gets to a point where backups fail and I cannot enter time machine. In each instance I have only used 110GB of the 500GB space.
Is there a better solution to fixing this problem than deleting the sparsebundle? That seems to be the only way to get it to back up again.backup is failing again:

Can I restore backup from another mac with time machine?
I would like to restore files from a TM backup from another Mac - is this possible? Thanks.
I'm not sure I know how to help. I use OS X Server's Time Machine services from a Mac Mini to do my back ups to a drive connected to that server. I have the same user account on one MBP Retina that does not do back ups as another MBP Retina that DOES back ups. However, I can't even open the sparse bundle from the one that doesn't do back ups of the one that does (if that makes sense).
You might try and see if this link helps. This guy was the TM guru around here. He might have addressed a solution to what you're trying to do. -
Can I back up 1 computer to 2 different disks with Time Machine/capsule
I have a work laptop that I back up using time machine to an external HD at my desk. I have a 1GB Time capsule at home that I use to back up my iMac. Is it possible to use the Time capsule to back up my laptop at home whilst still maintaining my Time Machine back up at work? Any suggestions??

While it's true that you can't take an external drive (a single destination) and move it back and forth between your Mac and the TCs USB port and still expect TM to recognize the sparsebundle, I think the original question is slightly different. They are asking if TM will properly backup to 2 different destination drives at different times. I think it should be possible. -
When I back up files on my exertnal HD drive with time machine can I erase what's on my Mac HD for space without losing what's on external HD?
If the data is valuable to you, redundant backups are essential. Time Machine is an excellent vehicle when you have to restore data that no longer exists on your internal HDD.
Mende1's suggestion of using Carbon Copy Cloner is excellent because it gives yous a HDD that is 'ready to go' should your internal HDD fail (as all HDDs eventually will).
For example, I have 5 copies of my iTunes folder, one each on three MBPs, on a HDD devoted strictly to iTunes and Time Machine (this does not include the iPod). One may view this as excessive but since I have over 100 GB in this application, I am very comfortable with this.
I advocate that the best backup strategy is Time machine combined with a boot HDD and a third HDD for the most important user data. If there is non essential data, the you may certainly compromise and use just Time Machine.

I have a new mac book pro/LION and can't access my back up data when I click on "enter time machine". I need the back up data that I could access on my old mac book pro (that is now broken). I can only access time machine back up data that I've obtained since starting the new mac book pro. Tnx so much
Try doing a click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".

Backing up data FROM a network drive using Time Machine
Okay. I'm willing - rather begrudgingly - to accept the fact that I can't use my 2x1TB LaCie network drives to store backup data from Time Machine. (I'm really hoping that Apple will enable this functionality in a future update.)
However, the internal drives on my iMac and MBP are quite full, and I have a lot of media, so my iTunes and iPhoto Libraries are stored on one of the LaCie NAS drives.
It appears as though Time Machine will not backup the data on this volume, even though mounted in Finder. (In a sense, I understand this not being enabled by default, but surely Apple could have envisaged users storing large proportions of their data on external devices and given us the option to 'opt in' volumes to include with Time Machine?)
Absent any official support from Apple, has anyone worked out a way of enabling Time Machine to backup the data from any mounted volume other than the internal HDD?

Unpublished sites: iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). That Domain file is the only file that can be opened in iWeb.
Published sites: In iWeb, publish your site(s) to a folder in a location you can remember. But note that you won't be able to open this folder in iWeb — it's only useful for re-uploading your site(s) to a server. -
Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem." I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked. TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time. The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned. I have more than enough available backup storage space for it. Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup. It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem. It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful. The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk. I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive. Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

Something caused a disconnect. Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old. It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker. See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard. If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light. -
I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?
I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive. -
Kernel Panic while backing up with Time Machine - now everything is GONE!
I got a kernel panic while i tried to back up with Time Machine....when i shut down the computer, and restarted it (with the external still plugged in, and on), it came up with an error message that said
"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
And my three options were to "Initialize...", "Ignore", or "Eject"...
I didn't hit either of those buttons, i was trying to contact apple for support only to find out that i am just a week past my minimum 90 day telephone support, so i am trying to scrape up enough to order the APP immediately.
However, in the meantime, everything on my external harddrive is gone...Disk Utility doesn't even see that there was once a Partition on that drive, and thus, it is not showing up on my desktop, and there is no information to be recovered...everything is gone.
This is kind of ironic because i was just reading an article about how people are losing their info on their User account after having the Guest Accounts enabled....logged into guest, and back out of guest...
I am a part of one of those statistics because i do NOT have the Guest account enabled at all...
Can anybody else help me with this?where can i find the panic.log?
I did a spotlight search with no results.
I checked /Library/Logs, and didn't see a panic.log
I also checked ~/Library/Logs and didn't find a panic.log either....i was unable to find anything related to a kernel panic log, or anything.
Could you point me in the right direction for this please? Could it be that i had a kernal panic, and it did not record the log?
So what can i do to correct this?
Disk Warrior didn't detect the drive, and zapping the PRAM didn't correct it either.
I keep getting the error message i posted previously.
I even tried to plug the drive into my old 15" PowerBook G4 running 10.4 tiger to see if i could see the drive appear on the desktop, and i also got the same error there as well.
If i go into Disk Utility, into Partition, i have to create a Partition. There is absolutely nothing on the drive at all. Everything is gone because of a kernal panic - which happened when i was trying to use Time Machine to back up the drive.
I'm 1/2 afraid to do anything at the moment because i want to figure out what happened to the data i lost on my Time Machine backup drive, and how to get it back...at the same time, i'm afraid of losing all my information on my computer as well since people are having issues with the so called Guest Account issue that wipes everybody's user account's information.
Is there another scenario for this, could it be not just Guest Accounts deleting a users home folder, but also kernal panics related to Time Machine, which end up erasing your entire Time Machine backup drive too?
Apple really needs a fix for this and should somehow reward us with something for the unprofessionalism in their own technology.

I have a macBook and an external drive backing up everything with time machine.
My MacBook is starting to run low on HD space (and my external drive is even worse!)
I would like to erase a lot of my photos, music and videos from my macbook, as they're already backed up on my external drive, but I'm concerned...
1) If my external drive runs out of space, won't time machine keep deleting the oldest saved date until it has room? (eventually this could delete the date I last had all my photos, music and video on my MacBook before I deleted it...)
2. The external drive is a firewire drive, so if I get another mac, it might not be compatible.
3. If the drive crashes, I lose everything anyway.
So after all that, my questions are:
Is there a way to back up all my files from time machine to DVDs before I delete the largest files?
Is there a smarter way to backup my music,pictures and videos than just time machine on an external drive?

Yes, you should be. With any backup app, the essential point is to have (at least) 2 copies of everything important in (at least) 2 separate places. All hard drives fail: some sooner, some later. When that happens, you may lose everything that was on it.

It should be. It's possible you'd want to reformat it, but it should work.

No. You could archive some of the originals from your internal HD, though.

Yes. Your best bet is to get a larger (or additional) internal HD, so you can keep all the originals on your MacBook. It's much more convenient, and access is faster.
Also get a larger drive (or Time Capsule, or connect a USB drive to an Airport Extreme) for TM, as your primary backups.
Then, as Baltwo says, get another drive and put a bootable "clone" on it, via CarbonCopyCloner (which I use) or SuperDuper! as a secondary, independent backup.
Third, get something off-site. That could be your bootable "clone;" a portable external with just your home folder, or only the most important parts of it; or videos, photos, etc., archived to DVDs; and take whatever it is to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, or other secure location. That way, you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike, etc. -
I have an external hard drive that I use to hold photos and other files on that no longer fit on my macbook. I also use the external hard drive for back ups set up with time machine. I don't believe I ever did anything to partition it, I've just always had separate folders (Photos, Music, etc) with one being called "Back Ups" (or Backups.backupdb) that my time machine back ups would automatically go into. Recently, I made the switch from my HDD in my macbook to a new SSD of the same size. I used the back ups on the external hard drive to restore all my content, which all worked out fine. My problem now is in using my external hard drive. When I plug it in, it no longer seems to be working with time machine. Also, I was organizing some files within the external hard drive, and when I dragged one into a folder, it took a while to load. Before, it was instantaneous moving a file already on the external hard drive to another location within it. Can anyone help me in getting the external hard drive to work with my new SSD? I don't want to delete any of the folders or back ups that are already on it, since that's the only place I have some of those files. Please let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks! First, she has to be logged in to the same iTunes account as she used on the old computer.
Second, when she plugs the iPhone in to iTunes, right click on the phone name and select transfer purchases.
Third, enter one contact and one calendar entry into the new computer's addressbook/calendar.
After that, she should be fine. -

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.

After the initial backup, it will wirelessly backup your system every hour -- it only takes a few minutes and basically you are unaware of it even happening except for the sync icon turning in your menu bar.

Throw out a bunch of photos from a disc and then empty the trash? Go back a few days and there it is.
I find I use it far more than I ever thought I would -- and ironically, because Macs basically just plain old work, I've never in 8 years had to go look for a backup of files or anything that accidently disappeared the way things do on Windows based computers. -

When you boot the new machine for the first time, you'll be prompted to import your data from a Time Machine backup.
