Backing up a "Delete Unused Media" Master.

When we're finished editing a program on FCPro (latest version, with almost new computers) we'll go thru the Media Manager and use "Delete Unused Media" - and then save that (the folder and Sequence clapperboard)onto a DVD-R.
Works great. And almost always restores perfectly.
But sometimes, although we shoot on a CF Card (Canon XF300 camera and a Panasonic HVX200) the client will give us a Betacam tape, we need to capture from that - and of course Media Manager won't take "just a short clip" we use from that card. As I understand - it doesn't have the proper Time Code or something like that, not really relevant to my 'issue' here!
But then the "Delete Unused Media" files can be 12 or more gig. so it needs several DVD-r's to write to. We use "BackUp" the Apple program that comes with Mobileme to do this as it seems to understand how to breakup a large file to multiple dvd-r's. Usually restores them just fine, too.
But it can be a little flakey . . . it crashes more often than it should during this lengthy procedure. We'll get a BackUp Failed" error. When we click 'history' we see some vague (to us) like "An internal application error has occurred. The archive could not be created. End Backup at . . . "
Doesn't help us much. We're using v 3.2 of BackUp. We'll have the same problem on a specific job with 3 different Mac's - so it's not "the" computer. Anyone have any experience with this . . . ?
It does work most of the time, seemingly intermittent when it fails.
Finally, maybe the easiest solution is to use some other program to backup to DVD'r's. Anyone know of any program that will backup large files (like Backup does) to multiple disks?
Thanks very much,
Larry

Hi Meg,
Thank you for your thoughtful response. BOY, did you open a can of worms around here! Either I just learned something VERY important from you that I didn't know (that I should know!), or perhaps you're mistaken in this particular instance ('cause I didn't make it clear in my original post - as it wasn't directly about THIS issue you've answered) - but in the back of my mind it IS a good issue - we'll see.
I did not know that about the reel name! I believe you're saying as long as it has a reel name - the Unused Media "portion" of it will be deleted when I do a DUM. (Delete Unused Media!)
OK - so we shoot on our Canon XF300 before I import it, I see it automatically names the Reel "Canon XF" and all the footage I shoot on the CF card - the DUM works perfectly. It also HAS a reel name!
But then the client give us an old Betacam tape - and we capture the footage from that. Say it's a 30 minute tape. What I've found - and we're trying to figure out how to avoid - is if there is a 30 second scene on that 30 minute tape that we incorporate into the sequence - when I DUM the sequence - it will save the entire 30 minute tape! Even though we just want to use 30 seconds. That's how it works. Now I don't remember if we "name" that Betacam tape as a reel - we probably do, but I don't remember. But are you saying . . . that if the "capture" (whether from analogue tape or digital cards) has a REEL NAME - the DUM feature will work?
I sure hope you're right - because so far - DUM works for us perfectly - EXCEPT when I include 'old' footage from Betacam or M2 tapes. Of course, that creates a very big file we're NOT wanting 95% of. So I think you're saying if we go back to the DUM sequence and "name" the beta tape - (if it isn't now) - then the DUM feature will work perfectly, as it does now on everythig else.
Thank you Meg - this is important to us as it comes up all the time.
Now pretend you're wrong and the Betacam footage DOES have a reel name. A workaround would be to take each clip we use from the Betacam tape and make a self contained movie of those few seconds, and use that on the timeline. But that would be really bulky. I'm really hoping you're right about the reel name. Have you had any experience with this?
Really thanks, Larry

  • HOW TO Delete Unused Media from FINAL CUT PRO

*HOW TO DELETE UNUSED MEDIA FROM HARD DRIVE IN FINAL CUT PRO.* Keywords: disk disc drive space remove compressor
    SUMMARY:
Say your original clip is 10 gigs, you can use only what you need and delete the rest from your hard drive. I know people on the forums say to just buy another hard drive, NO! It took 2 days to figure out but here it is!!! Email me if needed at [email protected]
    QUESTION:
I captured 1 hour of video at a time and now want to delete from my hard drive all the parts I don’t want to use. I have 300GB of junk on my hard drive and I only want to use a few scenes using a few megabytes, so that I'll get most of my 300GB back!!!!
    ANSWER:
In final cut on Mac, click on one small clip (to get familiar with process), go to “file”, “export”, then “using compressor”. This will open compressor software. Your file will open in the left top window. Then you need to batch the job or jobs. IMPORTANT: I’ve also solved the Compressor problem when you press “submit” to a batch and it states “Cluster: None”. Search forum for “In compressor you experience what I have”.
    <Edited by Moderator>

Part of the problem could lie in the fact it's an imovie project coming into FCP, wouldn't rule that out. Second my be the terms you use and what you expect to happen. For example, a subclip is just a smaller clip subbed from a larger clip. It has nothing to do with media management. But you can media manage a subclip and delete the unused media.
Try this (be sure to back up the original clip first). take a long clip into the viewer, make an IN and OUT duration of like 30 frames and then subclip that, Modify > Make Subclip. a new subclip will appear in the browser with a torn clip icon and the name Subclip. Right click on the subclip and choose Media Manager.... Check the Delete unused media from duplicated clip. As you toggle that the green Modified bar at the top change from the full clip size to a tiny modified size. If it does not then one of two things ... user error or the system is screwed up. That's the easiest way to test media manager.

  • Cant locate offline clips after deleting unused media using Media Manager

    Hi,
I recently used Media Manager for the first time to clean up an old project of mine, and delete unused media to save some space. Having read and re-read all manuals/help I proceeded with the 'Use Existing' command in the Media Manager...and now a big portion of my files are offline.
There was no option to 'save to a location' but when I go to 'reconnect media' the pathway for these offline files is -
    Macintosh HD:private:var:tmp:folders.501:TemporaryItems
and the clips are labelled with '-2' or '-3' after their name.
Ive used spotlight and searched through my HD and lacie - and I cant find the location above at all! Im getting worried, as i need to go back into the project to make some really minor changes but cant face re-capturing material then eye-matching the shots ive used, it will take days! These clips must be floating around somewhere on the system?
    Please please help! Thank you!!

Thanks Chris - I can go back to my source material although dont know if I can batch capture ok as the source material was captured in an old version of FC Express and had been moved over to my new FCP 4 - dont know if this might cause problems...i hope not!
Regarding the backup of source material - just wondering if theres any other way to make those files smaller - it seems a waste of valuable storage space if Ive captured say an hours worth of footage but only ended up using 20 mins of it in my end sequence (for example). Is there no way to get rid of that extra 40 mins of media that ill never use again?

  • Deleting unused media in Media Manager not working

This is one of those cases where I get really frustrated with Apple...
I've captured some footage from VHS using 'capture now', and the media that was created has a bunch of blank frames at the beginning and end. I'd like to remove the excess media from the clip to save space.
I'm following the directions EXACTLY as shown in the section "Creating Independent Media Files From Subclips After Capturing" from the Final Cut Pro User Manual on page 377 selecting subclips I want to keep and using Media Manager to delete unused media, but my media hasn't gotten any smaller, and the blank frames in the original media are still there if I reconnect it.
Furthermore, I've tried using media manager to copy the referenced media (from a subclip) to a new clip, and it just copies the whole file.
How can I get rid of this excess waste of space!!?

Well, does this footage have timecode? A REEL number? If you captured as NON-CONTROLLED device the footage might not have timecode, and without timecode the Media Manager cannot track exactly what you want to remove...what footage you want set aside and copied as the rest is deleted. This is also the case if you don't have a reel number. You might have 5 clips all with the same starting timecode but no reel number.

  • Media Manager not deleting unused media from HDV (intermediate codec) clips

I have a project which uses HDV footage which I captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I now have a bunch of clips that are very large in file size so I'd like to use the Media Manager to delete all the unused footage from the clips. I have tried countless different selections of sequences, clips in the browser, clips in a timeline etc but can't seem to get the Media Manager to show a smaller file size for the processed files based on 'Use Existing' with 'Delete unused media' option. The two size meters at the top always stay the same. Can the media manager trim HDV/Apple Intermediate Codec footage? If not is there a way to get rid of the footage that I haven't used? Thanks!
    Ben

I've never mastered MM. If I want a small section out of larger clip, I simply just export that section of the clip using 'current settings'.
Hope someone who has tamed the MM beast will step in here and offer you a better way...
    good luck.

  • Don't understand 'Delete unused media from duplicated items'

    Can anyone help with this?
I have a large project spanned across 2 drives and want to tidy it all up to a third drive. Using Media Manager (with no specific sequences selected) it says the project size is 350Gb. If I check the 'Delete unused media from duplicated items' box it reduces to 267GB.
Given that I'm not selecting a particular sequence edit I assume it is aimaing to manage all files. So what is the variation of 84GB. If I opt for the 267GB, what is in the 84GB that I'm about to loose. I haven't duplicated anything so unsure what I'll be losing?

You won't lose anything if you copy the project with Media Manager. Test the copy afterwards to make sure it is exactly what it should be. Once you are happy with it, the original can be deleted.
You can make the copy even smaller if you exclude render files. It will have to be re-rendered only if you have to revisit the project at some point. Use the space saved for something else until it is really needed.

  • Deleting unused master data

    Hi All,
We want to delete unused master data. In our case, we need to delete material numbers from infoobject ZVD_MAT that is no longer used.
There is standard SAP program RSDMD_DEL_BACKGROUND to perform this activity.
But the problem is there is huge amount of data in ZVD_MAT and the above program will not give us any information of the material numbers that are deleted.
By using this program, it might happen that new material numbers which are required are deleted. In this case, it will be difficult to refresh ZVD_MAT for those new material numbers.
Can anyone suggest if there is any other way or programs/transactions to check the deleted materials?

    Hi,
    Try using the program
    RSDMDD_DELETE_BATCH
    Selective Deletion Using the Report
           1.      Enter report RSDMDD_DELETE_BATCH in ABAP Editor (transaction SE38) and create a variant for it.
           2.      Execute the variant.
           3.      Enter the InfoObject whose master data you want to delete.
           4.      In Filter Data, you can specify which data you want to delete.
           5.      You can specify a deletion mode for the data (parameter P_SMODE).
More information: Deleting Attributes and Texts for a Characteristic
           6.      You can simulate the report before running it (parameter P_SIMUL).
           7.      You can schedule the report in the background. If you want to clear up your master data at regular intervals, you can also integrate the report into a process chain using process type ABAP Program
or you can use function module as well
Check if the function module RSDMD_DEL_MASTER_DATA
    Couple of import parameters:
    I_IOBJNM -
    Give info object name
    I_T_CHAVL---Characteristic values
    I_FLG_FORCE_DELETE-- to force delete
Use I_FLG_SIMULATION to simulate first and then delete
    Thanks and regards

  • Removing unused media from Sequence cause crashing

I am trying to remove unused media from projects prior to archiving to free up/clean up finished projects. Each project I have tried to do this with I am having the program close during process. Then when I try to reopen project it will not open and keeps crashing. Firstly are these project now corrupt, and can I still archive them somehow or get the project back?? Please help as the projects I have tried to do this with aren't of huge importance but I do need to try to clean up and archive others that are.

It is safe to use the media manager...
Check your hard drive for space...for 30 mins means you'll need at least another 6.5 GB of free space... make it 8GB to be safe...
In media manager (NOTE : also read the manual carefully) use the COPY option...
Using COPY, ensure the 'duplicate selected items and place into a new project' box IS ticked, this will set up a completely new project and folder, containing ONLY EVERYTHING you have in your 30 min sequence... and will not delete or change anything from the origonal... If you go to the new folder you'll see another folder called 'media'... this will contain all the clips etc.
Then, open up the new COPIED project, watch it to check it's ok... if it's cool (which it should be) then you now have a completely independant project that is nothing to do with the origonal... and contains only used media.
Then, open up final cut pro docs>capture scratch> 'project name' and you can simply delete ALL your old media manually, knowing that everything you need is now in a new folder elsewhere....
Of course, this only works if you have that little bit of extra space left on your drive for the new media to be copied to... but i find it's the safest, and easiest way of removing unused media.

  • I tried to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1.1 and it wanted to delete all of my media. So i quickly unplugged it from my laptop so it wouldn't delete anything. Now any time i try to use it, it wont let me of course i dont want to delete my media. HELP!

Please help! I don't want to delete my media, but i want to use my phone! Is there a way? Every time i turn it on a picture shows the iPhone cord being plugged into the iTunes symbol. (Meaning that it wants me to plug it back in).

if its telling you to plug into itunes then you have to restore it that way. do you back your phone up using itunes or i cloud. if you have a back up you are good to go. To check if you have a back up
Windows>  Go into itunes under EDIT>Preference>Devices and your back ups will be listed there
Mac>   go to itunes under Itunes>Preference>Devices and your back up will be listed there

  • Deleted iTunes Media off the Mac, Can i now get it to read from my Hard Drive ?

I started looking into this as my Mac was using Roughly 500 of 750 gig on Music. But I've only recently noticed that this is due to duplicates in My Music folder and iTunes Media. Ive done Some reading up and can't seem to find a definitive answer to what to do.
Ive Backed up My Music and iTunes media on a External Hard-drive, My Music folders are all neat and organised and would like it to stay that way, But I've noticed iTunes media folder was a mess, This is My fault as i had the make a copy to iTunes media ticked in preferences. And the other one De-selected ( Keep Music Organised )
So to free up space  on the Mac I'm going to delete iTunes media as this is no use to me the way it is, I can't find anything in there and it looks a mess. The Problem with this is iTunes reads from iTunes media and i would rather it read form my organised Music files on the internal Hard-drive so i can keep ontop of it.
All my Playlists are built within iTunes as i use them in Serato for DJ Purposes , So i would like to keep these playlists and just let iTunes read from the hard drive instead Is there a way once iTunes media is deleted i can highlight a 2014 playlist for example with 250 songs in and change where iTunes looks for them so i don't have to reload all the music? with iTunes media deleted there coming up saying can't Locate File , but i will have to manually show iTunes 25000 where they are manually , Can this be done per Playlist in one big Hit?
Thank you and hope it all made sense

Unfortunately it is not making enough sense for me to try to make real suggestions.
If you are going to disable iTunes media preferences then you have to be 100% organized and know how iTunes works because from that point on iTunes will stop helping you maintain your files in any way.
Yes, it may look a mess but the whole thing is designed so you should never need to look in your iTunes folder yourself, just at the iTunes application window.  Maybe you need to do this to use your Serrato thingy but that's because you're doing something special.
If you add a file to iTunes and have the "copy to" preference set then it will place a copy of what you add in the correct folder inside iTunes Media folder.  The only way you should have media files actually directly in other folders is if you put them there yourself or you have residual structure from pre-iTunes version 9 before media was split into folders of different kinds.
If you disable iTunes media preferences then iTunes is absolutely terrible at following media moved to other drives.  Moving to a different drive is not really moving, it is copying and then deleting the original, and that means iTunes sees the file as being gone.
I really get lost on your fourth paragraph.

I accidentally deleted my media files from iTunes and Trash when I was trying to move the files to an external hard drive. Is there a way to restore the media files from a Time Machine backup or from iTunes Match? What are the steps to do this?

If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

  • Can I delete Original Media folder after its all been transcoded?

So i remember reading that most footage you import should be transcoded. Though Final Cut Pro "works natively with formats like h.264 and dslr movs, it is better to have it optimized into Pro Res and transcoded." Having listened to that, I have Optimized all of my media that I have importated however now I have double the media in my FCP Events folders because I have both Original Media and Transcoded media. This leads me to a few questions...
    1) Can I delete the Original Media folder if all my my media is transcoded? How will this effect my timeline and projects? Will this free up space? How can I verify all of my clips have bene transcoded?
    2) Can I delete the Transcoded Media and go back to using the Original Media? Will this mess up my timeline and projects that I have started editing or will it revert the media in my projects back to the Original? Which would run faster/better performacne Original Or Transcoded? I shoot all of my footage on a Canon 7d DSLR 24/30 fps 1080p, H.264.
    3) What workflows have you used so that you dont dobule anything? If this project is a loss, what should I be doing in future events when importing? Should I send to Compressor and transcode there BEFORE I import into FCP. That way I am only importing the Transcoded stuff?
    Thoughts?
    Mike

1- Yes, you can delete the Original Media folder, FCP will only read from your Optimized Media folder then.  But move it to the trash first, then launch FCP X and test it out, before emptying the trash.
2- Yes, again, test it as I mentioned in 1 above.  Once you remove either Original or Optimized, it's gone, that's it.
3- Always let FCP do the transcoding, doing it in Compressor gains you nothing.  You shold base your decision to optimize on the hardware you're using and the amount of storage space you have available.  H.264 is super compressed.  ProRes uncompresses it and is more of it's natural file size.

  • How can i update my itouch without deleting my media?

how can i update my ipod touch on my laptop without deleting my media? everytime i try to update it, it tells me it will dete my media and i dont want it to. is there a way i can update it without deleting any media?

All of your media and everything else should be on your computer. If it is not, then put it there.
You can then sync it back after the update.

    OK.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program such as one of those discussed here:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod tothe computer.  Right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.  That should also get the iOS updated.

  • Why is there no simple way to delete unused reference pages from multiple FM files?

I have hundreds of files in which some, but not all, of the reference pages are not being used. I don't want to open each file and manually click each page and then delete the pages one by one... what can I do to fix this? I think the files were all created with the same template but ironically the author imported graphics (by reference) onto the reference pages. The path to the referenced graphics (which are located on the reference pages) is invalid, and now all the FM files have errors. I am not a framemaker master, so this may be a simple fix, but I can't figure it out. I tried opening a file (file A) and deleting the unused reference pages. Then I saved it as a new file name (file B) and tried to import the reference pages of "file B" into "file A". This did not work. It just added additional reference pages to file A. I just want to be able to generate a list of reference pages for the files and then only delete the ones that I don't need. Please help. Any suggestions???

IF the imported graphics are still being used, then when you open a file with a "missing" graphic,  FM does ask where the missing file(s) is located and will use this information when searching for other missing graphics in other files of  book. You could try creating a temporary superbook that contains many of the files and then doing an update. Otherwise, deleting "unused" Reference pages doesn't really gain you anything (and you could potentially mess up some paratags if they are using any of the reference frames on any of those pages).
When you import formats into FM files from another, FM uses and additive model, i.e. identically named objects are replaced and new ones are added. Nothing is removed.
