Backing up a NAS to a DAS

I read through the FAQs, didn't see much about this.
I have a USB external drive I'd like to backup, but it's connected to my AirPort Extreme. Will Time Machine back it up to a Drobo or some USB/FireWire external? I KNOW that Apple doesn't support Time Machine backing up TO a a drive connected to AirPort, but what about a drive I want backed up FROM the AirPort.

definitely not. TM can back up directly attached drives ONLY. no exceptions or workarounds for that. you need a different backup solution for backing up a network drive. beside the already mentioned Chronosync see this post by kappy from more options

  • Does Time Machine back up external NAS devices?

I'm on a small business network and recently added an external NAS device that stores all customer files. I have another external HD that I use for Time Machine back-ups that I disconnect at the end of the day and place in a fire safe. Before adding the NAS I plugged the back up HD into my G5 via USB. If I continue to do that will Time Machine also back up the mounted NAS? If not, how do I go about scheduled back ups of the NAS?

no, TM can only back up directly attached drives. no network devices. you need a different backup solution to back up a NAS. see this post by kappy for options

  • Back up a NAS folder in Time Machine?

    Hi,
I've got my iTunes music folder connected to my Airport Extreme as a NAS drive so all my computers can share the library. I've also got an external drive hooked up to my main Mac running time machine, but it's not indexing the data in the mounted NAS drive.
    1. Is there a way to get Time Machine to backup the files in the mounted NAS drive used for iTunes music?
    If not...
    2. Is it possible to connect that Time Machine hard drive into my router (via a USB hub) as well as the iTunes drive and get it to back up all computers on my network, including the networked drive?
    Thanks

No. Time Machine can back up TO some NAS devices, but won't back up FROM any network drive.
    2. Is it possible to connect that Time Machine hard drive into my router (via a USB hub) as well as the iTunes drive and get it to back up all computers on my network, including the networked drive?
No. In that setup, it won't be seen as a valid destination at all.

  • Cant back up to NAS using Time machine

    Can anybosy help
I have a 1TB Network drive, I bought after being burgled and not wanting my backup in the same room as the PC I thought this was a good idea until I moved to Apple recently.
I can see the drive in devices but it wont pick it up in Time machine
if I put a USB stick in it picks it up in devices too and shows it in Time machine!
What am I doing wrong or has Apples failed to resolve a problem that has been on going since 2007 ?
Im beginning to wish I hadn't bought this PC all the most basic things seem impossible.

A Firewire drive would only be about twice as fast as USB 2, so you're still looking at 15 days. Something isn't right.  I'm usinge FW800, and my my 1TB backs up overnight.
Take a look here and see if anything helps: http://pondini.org/TM/D2.html

  • Time Capsule as External Hard Drive backed up by NAS?

I'd like to setup the hard drive on my Time Capsule to act a file/media server. Is this possible?
Also, I'm currently backing up my Mac Pro with Time Machine installed on a ReadyNAS NV+ RAIDED four hard drive server. Is it possible to backup the hard drive on the Time Capsule to the ReadyNAS NV+ as well?
    Thanks!

I don't think the TC is going to suit you.
I'd like to setup the hard drive on my Time Capsule to act a file/media server. Is this possible?
But the TC is not a media server.. the only protocols offered are AFP file server and SMB file server.. and that is it.. All the media smarts have to be in a player elsewhere. TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.. designed for TM backups over wireless.
Also, I'm currently backing up my Mac Pro with Time Machine installed on a ReadyNAS NV+ RAIDED four hard drive server. Is it possible to backup the hard drive on the Time Capsule to the ReadyNAS NV+ as well?
    Thanks!
You can backup anything to anything if you make it happen.. but there is no way the TC can automate this. It is remember a dumb hard disk in a router.. no smarts. But of course you can setup third party software like CCC to copy the files from the TC to the readynas. Or even do it manually. This is slow because the computer becomes the intermediary and all packets have to go through the computer.
Overall, a TC would make a far better target for TM..
And the ReadyNAS a far superior media server.

  • Is this possible? 2 iTunes library 1 on HDD 1 on a NAS?

At the moment I have all my library video, music, TV shows together and it's becoming too big for my internal iMac HDD.
What I was thinking was having the video and TV shows in a seperate library on my NAS to save storage space. Is this possible? The NAS is a Buffalo Linkstation live.
I could then keep all my music which I use most often on interrnal HDD and video seperate for streaming to my Apple TV.
How can I do this please
    cheers

    (hopefully) one last question....
If I do this splitting and use Time Machine for backup what will it backup? Just the iTunes music on the internal HDD and just the references to the movies/TV shows?
time machine will back up any drive connected directly to your Mac (firewire, USB). TM will not backup networked drives. click here for information.
ie I will have to have a manual backup of my movies and TV shows, as these will only be physically on my NAS and no where else?
call me paranoid but i have double and triple backups of my media files, spread across various drives. all drives fail eventually so better be safe ...
bottom line, you need to backup manually - unless you want to move your library back from the NAS to a DAS so that TM can include your media files for backup to a TC or perhaps an e.g. 4 TB Drobo.

  • Storing MPEG4 files in TV Programmes library. Is this possible?

I have a number of TV Programmes I have recorded with a PVR. I have converted them to MP4 so I can view them with Apple TV. The Itunes library stores them as home movies by default, I would rather keep the files in the TV Programmes folder...which is not created by default as I do not purchase TV shows from Itunes Store. Hope this makes sense and someone can advise me.
    many thanks, David

  • Help with NAS Remote Access

    Here's what I have:
    Synology DS212J
Airport Extreme Base Station Gen 4 running latest firmware
    Running Lion
    Here's what I have done:
Changed NAS to use Manual Configuration. IP set to: 10.0.1.14 (after reading some forums here and there I have now changed this to 10.0.1.202 (to be outside the range of DCHP address)
In Airport Extreme I have configured Port Forwarding for port 80 and 7000 entering the private ip of the NAS 10.0.1.14 and now 10.0.1.202 and filled in the TCP ports with the appropriate port, restarted router.
After reading more posts in the forums I checked the NAS and my Mac Firewalls. Nothing...not turned on. I have since gone back into the NAS Firewall settings after reading a post to allow access for Photostation, File station...just in case it makes a differnece
Obtained a static IP from my ISP - ISP does not block any ports
Canyouseeme.org always gives a Timed out message when I try and check port forwarding
Everything works perfect on LAN...just remote I can't seem to get.  Some nice iphone apps I'd like to use remotely and use my Air to access when away from home.
    Questions:
Is it necessary to also configure a Static IP on my Airport Extreme...I haven't as my understanding is that only the DS needs one?  If I do could some kindly step this out for me?
I have previously changed some settings in my router for unblock-us http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/ ... 27...could this be the problem?
Thanks to anyone that might be able to help. I can post screen shots also or could send privately! I have noted that you must be at an outside computer to test access and of course tried that as well...but understand Canyouseeme.org should still say it can see the open port when I test from my network? I also have a DDNS and everything there shows Normal.
Hoping for something obvious and stupid on my part that someone can point out!

so if i understand correctly this should work?
    WAN IP 208.160.90.22
    router ip address 192.168.1.1
    camera ip 192.168.1.200
to access the camera i would type in http://208.160.90.22:1024
thanks greatly!  i'm trying to use this camera to monitor a boiler to make sure it's operating in this cold weather we are having...

  • Itunes LIbrary stored on a NAS

I have a "myworldbook" NAS with my i-tunes library on it.
Sometimes it disconects itself form the network... and I-tunes defaults the library back to a local folder (without even asking - a bit rude I think).
Usually I just re-set the NAS and change the library in i-tunes back at the NAS. I spent last month updating all the album covers... Nice work.
But when the NAS went off line, it defaulted back to local drive... and then "lost" all my album covers except the ones that I-tunes downloads automatically.
Now I have a number of files on a local drive and a number of files on the NAS with album covers who knows where... it's a mess.
    Consolidate? ok.
But there's a complication... another computer shares the NAS and when it adds files to the library... i.e. when I consolidate, those files are not added to the other computer's copy of i-tunes, even though they exist in the NAS library.
How do I work around sharing the Library on a NAS trouble free?

Basco did you figure this out?

  • ITunes Music on a NAS box

Hi all, I am actually going mad trying to work this out so any help would be appreciated (even if it is "it doesn't work like that so stop banging your head against a brick wall").
OK, here's the scenario. I have all the family's CDs ripped as MP3s in a folder on our home lan NAS box. I have a main windows machine that has iTunes on it to manage that music folder and library. I changed the iTunes media folder to point to the NAS box, then selected add folder to library. All good so far and spent the last 2 days deleting duplicates, manually adding albumn art, etc. Shared it using home sharing and even got it playing to a hifi with AirTunes controlled by my wife and I's iPhones. Great!
Until, I accidentally shut down the NAS box before the machine. The first thing that happened was that the library defaulted the local My Music folder but all the library and artwork still remained. Again all good I thought. I turned the NAS box back on and under preferences changed the iTunes Music folder back to the NAS share. After about 20 mins of it going through everything, again all apeared to work. Except when I duplicate files I no longer get the option to remove the file, it just takes it from the library database.
It somehow seems to have lost the association with the music folder and whilst the library points to and plays from it, none of the management functions (renaming files, deleting them appear to work).
Any clues? Any hints and tips for running a music library on a NAS box, so if I do manage to fix this that I don't have to keep repairing it if the NAS gets turned off?
    Thanks so much,
    Dave

Sorry that should say "when I delete duplicate files" not "when I duplicate files"

  • Should I still use iPhoto? I want to store my photos on a NAS

I'm trying to come up with a new photo workflow now that I have a Synology NAS on my home network. In the past, I've just let iPhoto do its thing, but now I'm not so sure I should even use iPhoto, given how my needs have changed. Some background:
I have a new 13" rMBP with 256GB of solid-state storage. For what I need, this should be plenty, as long as I find a new home for my 100GB of digital photos. I also have a Synology DS213j with 2 3GB Western Digital Red drives in a mirrored RAID configuration on my home network. I want to use this as my primary photo storage location, so I get the security of a mirrored RAID configuration and I am using Amazon Glacier for offsite backup (not to mention freeing up 100GB of storage on my rMBP).
I think I can make this work, but I want to get some opinions. Synology offers a nice system they call Photo Station that looks to be a great fit for organizing and browsing. I can use a combination of Image Capture and Hazel to help import, sort and organize any new photos. For any images that I need to edit, I plan on bringing a copy to my local drive, edit with Pixelmator, and then push the changes back to the NAS.
From what I've read, I can't simply copy the iPhoto library over to my NAS, that will cause all sorts of chaos, so my thought is to export all of the photos from my iPhoto library to my Synology NAS. For file export kind, should I use current or original? Once I complete this process, is there any value in even using iPhoto? Anything else I should consider?
    thanks!

No you should not continue to use iPhoto. You can't have an iPhoto Library on an NAS. The disk format is wrong and iPhoto is not designed for network access. End of story.
Neither should you use iPhoto in Referenced mode with the Photos on a NAS as that's just storing up problems.
For more on iPhoto and file management see this User Tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6361
That said, iPhoto is due to be replaced soon - in the coming months - by a new App, and this may not have that issue. For instance, there are no such reservations bout running referenced Aperture library - so who knows what may come with the new (that also replaces aperture.)
So, you might want to hold on making any big decisions until you see the options. Why? Because what you're describing as a workflow is moving to an entirely different kind of workflow. You're going from non-destructive with iPhoto, to lossy and destructive in your suggested replacement. Is that what you want?
What you export from iPhoto really depends on what you want: the original unedited image? Or a version of the edited one? What's for sure is the one thing you don't want is to export as Current - that's just a preview and missing loads of metadata.

  • Files and folders moved to NAS become read only.

I just got an Iomega NAS. When I move files and folders to it from my Macbook, they become read only when they get there. Files from my girlfriend's PC stay read/write when they are moved to the NAS.
I first noticed this with iTunes. I changed the location of my iTunes folder to be on the NAS and I let iTunes copy the music itself. Now, I can add music by new artists, but if I try to add an artist that I already have a folder for, it won't let me because the folder is read only. Also, I can't change any of the info for any files in iTunes.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it looks like all of the files and folders on my Mac are set up so that only I can see them. When I click "get info" on any file on the computer, it shows:
    me : read/write
    staff: read only
    everyone: read only

When I open a finder window, I see two icons for the NAS in the "shared" section. The first one is:
    hmnhd-ti2mkg
When I click "get info" it shows "Kind: PC Server" and there is no mention of permissions in the "get info" box.
    The second one is:
    hmnhd-TI2MKG.local
When I click "get info" it shows "Kind: Server" and there is no mention of permissions in the "get info" box.
Clicking on either one of these icons lets me browse through the exact same shares and folders. There is no difference between going in to one or the other. They both have the same permissions on all folders, as well.
"Jacob's iTunes Music" is a share on the NAS. All of my read only files (that I want to change to read/write) are already in this share.
Clicking "get info" on any of the shares shows them as "Kind: Sharepoint" with no mention of permissions.
I think I'm going to try to have iTunes copy all the files to my computer, change the permissions, then have it copy them back to the NAS. Is there a way to change permissions of folders, subfolders, and files without having to click "get info" on each and every one?

  • Error Code -50 and moving folders to a NAS

I had all of my iTunes files on a NAS (WD MyWorld Book - White Light Edition). The NAS was basically taken over by TimeMachine, so I copied all of my data onto an external LaCie drive which is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Copying from the NAS to the LaCie worked just fine. I reset the NAS so it was blank and recaptured the 900GB TimeMachine had eaten up.
Next I tried to copy the files from my external LaCie back to the NAS and got the error: "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
When I copy the files from the LaCie to my MAC HD, it works just fine. When I try to from my Mac HD, the same error occurs. I should say "folders" not "files" because I can move individual files.
My NAS is configured for AFP, NFS, and CIFS. It worked fine, of course, prior to resetting it. Now it won't allow me to move files to it. There are some apparent "solutions" but they haven't worked for me.
I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Have you seen this thread. They found a workaround...

  • Formatting NAS hard drive as Mac OS Extended HFS+

I just got a NAS enclosure for my home LAN and two SATA hard drives to fit.
Installed fine, even using the Windows-oriented browser interface installation.
The drives show up nicely in the finder, and some files copy over without difficulty. HOWEVER, some don't. I'm pretty sure that the problem is that the install utility formatted the hard drives in Windows format, because the files that they will not now accept are ones with Windows-disallowed filenames, such as those with long filenames or Windows-illegal characters.
    SO:-
I suspect that my problem would be solved if I could re-format the drives in the NAS enclosure to Mac OS Extended HFS+ format. BUT, the Windows-oriented installation utility provided by the NAS manufacturer (Linksys -- don't believe them when they glibly say their NAS boxes are Mac-compatible!) doesn't offer Mac formatting.
And unfortunately, while the NAS drives show up nicely in my Mac finders (both 10.3.9 and 10.5.5), they don't appear in Disk Utility, which is where I usually go to format hard disks.
    SO:
Is there a way to format a NAS disk in Mac format over my home LAN?
As a workaround, i could try temporarily installing the SATA drives internally in my G4 and format them that way, then put them back in the NAS enclosure. But it would be a bit of a kluge, and I'd have to re-transplant them every time I needed to undertake disk maintenance.
Any ideas, anyone? Thanks v. much.

Thank you for your response. I was able to successfully format the drives Extended journaled when they were out of the raid configuration. I was not able to format as Extended (not journaled) in the Raid configuration.
