Backing up a *single* 10TB datafile

What are some best practices for this scenario? How can I get multiple channels/threads to attack this datafile? Backing up via a single channel seems like a waste of time and underutilizing the resources.
It seems PARALLELISM only creates multiple threads to handle multiple datafiles. Am I missing something here?

    Hi
    I need help
My partner has set up multiple profiles on the iMac and has not done the sharing of files and software correctly.  Therefore we have some programs that do not operate in all profiles.  I want to go back to a single profile but need to be sure I am not going to lose any data or programs in the process.
Can any one give me a step by step guide - I am not mac savvy.

    Hello!
I recently just downloaded the 'Waze' app as a backup for my Garmin. I've read a few reviews that seem to rant and rave about how good the GPS app is. It is community driven and maps are constantly being updated by users. Plus it has a few other fun stuff in it (something similar to Gasbuddy where you can owe prices on the map). But like the person above me said, there is lots of useful free GPS apps in the App Store.
Oh and I may be wrong but I remember reading an article about Google being slower about updating its maps system--ie no turn by turn voice, which many people have had complaints about.
    Happy Searching!

  • Reformatting a partitioned drive back into a single drive....need help!

    Hi all,
I'm wanting to reformat the 60 gig hard drive on my Power book (10.3.9)
back into a single drive. A friend installed and partitioned this 60 gig a few years ago and the first portion is only six gigs and contains the OS.Apps and other guts. I constantly run into problems of running out of space on that drive. What I would like to do is listed below. I'm hoping someone can point me to a tutorial or other concise written directions for how to accomplish this. I'm looking for some fairly concise steps as doing this type of work is not my strength and I don't want to mess it up.
    1) Back up data from all three partitioned drives on to a single external drive of some sort.
    2) Reformat the 60 gig back onto a single drive.
    3) Successfully reinstall all data back on to the 60 gig and have it function as
    exactly as before.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Vance

Hi, wvd. If the data on your three partitions now totals about 50 GB as your post indicates, then after it has all been copied back onto the repartitioned, single-volume hard drive (whose formatted capacity is about 56.8 GB) there will be about 6-7 GB of free space available on that drive. That is only 1-2 GB more than the bare minimum amount of free space that should be maintained on the drive at all times. So if you anticipate a continuing accumulation of additional data in the future, you will very soon run out of space that can prudently be used, and not long after that you will begin to risk unreliable operation of your computer and the possible corruption or loss of data due to insufficient and dwindling free space on the drive.
Therefore, it would probably be a better idea to replace the present drive with a larger one than to repartition and reuse the present drive, unless there is a significant amount of data on it now that you could conveniently store somewhere else instead. In fact if you replace the current drive with a larger one and put the old one into an external FireWire enclosure, that drive can become a secondary data storage location for data that doesn't need to be kept on your new primary drive, or it can be used to back up some or all of the data on the primary drive.

  • Use of backing up a single tablespace or datafile

    Hello,
I am reading the RMAN manual and I'm quite familiar with backup up a tablespace or datafile, but I can find very few uses for that. Backup up a tablespace is useful for TPITR, but since that needs another instance its of very little use in most production environments. I think you cannot restore an old version of tablespace in a normal database, unless the tablespace has long been made read-only, in which case RMAN's optimizations will do the trick.
Even less use I can find for datafile backup. I have absolutely no idea what you can do with a single datafile.
Can you please clarify me on the uses of these RMAN features?
    Thank you.

    Dear Albi!
    Think of the following scenario:
You have a very large (let's say 1 Terabyte) production database that is split into n tablespaces. This database is in archivelog mode and a full backup of the hole database would take more than 10 hours.
    scenario end.
In such a scenario I think you will not take a full database backup very often. Therfore you can backup portions (tablespaces and datafiles) of your database. This will take less time then a hole DBbackup.
If you have to restore your DB then RMAN will take all the files it needs from all your backup. RMAN uses always the most actual version of your datafiles. After the restore RMAN will take the archivelogs to recover all datafiles to the most actual point in time. And that's the point why partial backups of your db are not only usefull for TSPITR.
I hope I could make clear what the operative point is with partial backups.
    Yours sincerely
    Florian W.

  • Data back up from Single User Mode

    Hello,
I have a problem with my 700 MHz iBook, dual USB, with OS X 10.3.9.
Unfortunately the OS doesn't start up because of "overlapped extent allocation" problem...
I would like to re-install the complete OS but before doing it, I would like to back up some directories.
Is it possible to save some data, by connecting an Ipod or some sort of external peripheral, from the Single User mode?
If yes, how can I do it?
Thank you in advance from your kind support.

Before giving up the ghost check out these:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25770.
Manually fix Overlapped Extent Allocation Errors without Disk Warrior
Overlapped overlapped extent allocation errors can be the bane of any Mac user's existence. Often, these errors go unnoticed until the problem becomes visible: your Mac might refuse to boot, crash unexpected, or worse, critical data might disappear from the Finder. Disk Utility can detect, but not fix overlapped extent allocation errors, and certain third-party utilities, such as Alsoft Diskwarrior, can fix them, but generally without reporting the consequences.
Overlapped extent allocation error occur when the file system thinks that two files are occupying the same area on the hard disk, hence overlapping on the same "inode," which is the structure which holds the location of the data blocks the file occupies, and also file permissions and flags.
Clearing the "overlapped" or "overallocated" extent allocation essentially means that you'll have to lose some data, because the only way to remove the overlap is to delete the file that's occupying the inode. So, if you suspect, or find out, that the guilty file is a critical system file that resides in one of the hidden system directories such as /etc /var /usr/ or visible system directories such as /System or /Library, and you don't want to reinstall the whole OS (which might not fix the overlapped extent allocation anyway), it's good to have another disk available to copy the files back to your original disk if necessary: a second bootable hard drive or a firewire drive connected to your Mac when you remove the misbehaving file. Just make sure that when you copy the file back to your boot disk that the permissions are correct, so it's best to use the "ditto" command, so that all sticky bits, flags, and permissions are preserved.
In case you didn't know, you don't have to boot from an install CD in order to check for overlapped extent allocations. All you need to do is restart your Mac, while holding down command + S to boot in "single-user mode."
At the command prompt that appears, type:
    $ fsck -fy
If you have an overlapped extent allocation, you'll see:
    "Overlapped Extent Allocation" (File 123456d)
No matter how many times you run fsck -fy, you'll never be rid of the error.
So, simply issue the following command:
    find / -inum 123456 -print
Note the "d" was dropped, or any extra letter that appears after the inode number.
The find will return a file name that matches with the inode number, and the path to that file. If you remove the file then the fsck will not return this error next time you run it.
However, before you can delete the file(s) in single-user mode, you'll need to mount the file system. Type:
    $ mount -uw /
When done, issue the "sync" command, and that will flush the write cache so that all pending writes are written from memory to the disk. Also, since most OS X 10.3 Macs use the HFS+ Journaled file system, it might be a good idea to disable the journal before booting into single-user mode by typing:
    $ sudo diskutil disableJournal /
then re-enable it when done fixing the overlapped extents and rebooting normally:
    $ sudo diskutil enableJournal /

If you own Disk Warrior then it should be able to repair a drive with overlapped extents.
There are two backup utilities included in Unix - psync and rsync. You will find them in the /usr/bin/ directory. For documentation simply enter: man psync or man rsync. In order to write data while in single-user mode you need to issue the command: /sbin/mount/ -uw / (Note: there is a "space" between the "uw" and the "/".) To mount an external drive you will need to provide the mountpoint for it in place of the "/", e.g., "/Volumes/volname") without the quotes.

  • Back to back connection on single device (global to vrf)

    Dear All,
I am trying to get a topology working using GNS3 Alpha 6 IOU L2 device, but actually the same issue applies to GNS3 using 3660 16ESW. I have not tried on real device, so maybe that is my issue :( In the real world it will be a 6500 Sup720
I have a single device, and would like to make a connection between the global route table and a vrf.
So I would have 1 interface on global, and one interface on vrf.
In GNS, I create a topology like this:
    router e1/0 - switch port #1
    router e1/1 - switch port #2
This creates a cable from one interface to another
Then the configuration is posted below.
Ping doesn't work, I don't even see a CDP neighbor.
I wonder if GNS supports the back2back connection (router connection to itself).
Any ideas? (theoretically it should work)
I have also tried make the interfaces e1/0 & e1/1 as the routed port, same issue. (Note that this is the only way to test it using GNS3 standard as 3660 does not support mac-address set on vlan interfaces)
    ! CONFIG on IOU
    ip vrf UNSEC-BDR
    rd 10.131.148.21:65002
    interface Ethernet1/0
description border router to LAN (outside)
    switchport access vlan 363
    interface Ethernet1/1
description LAN to border router (inside)
    switchport access vlan 364
    interface Vlan363
description BDR to LAN (outside) - mac hsrp only possible on IOU
    ip vrf forwarding UNSEC-BDR
    ip address 10.8.16.21 255.255.255.240
    mac-address 0000.0363.0001
    interface Vlan364
    ip address 10.8.16.18 255.255.255.240
    ! CONFIG on GNS
    ip vrf UNSEC-BDR
    rd 10.131.148.21:65002
    interface Ethernet1/0
description border router to LAN (outside)
    no switchport
    ip vrf forwarding UNSEC-BDR
    ip address 10.8.16.21 255.255.255.240
    interface Ethernet1/1
description LAN to border router (inside)
    no switchport
    ip address 10.8.16.18 255.255.255.240

    That doesn't do it.
I have used the page up key to skip back to the top, but why should we have to do that when most other forums I post on have a "to the top" button?

    That can't be right.
The Mac runs OSX of some description.
    Your iPad runs iOS 7.04.
Pages '09 runs on the Mac.
What do you mean by 4 pane window?
Are you sure you are not running Mac OSX 10.9 Mavericks and actually have Pages 5 installed?
