Backing up a specified folder from a Windows partition

Hello all,
Since Time Machine seems unable to back up anything from Windows partitions I thought I could create some script that would copy the required folder from the Windows to my Mac partition thus making it accessible to Time Machine. Can you please tell me how to make a script run on schedule (say, once every day, or every time Mac OS X boots)?
Thanks in advance,
Anton

  • Can't mount a folder from a windows network..

Our "IT" (outsourced) department migrated the network folders to another server and changed the filepath on the one folder I need to mount on my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6.8).
I have been able to mount the new folder onto other Windows boxes succesfully, but the filepath name doesn't work. I can get to the server and mount other folders there, but they have changed the file path and I'm hitting a brick wall when I try and mount it. The error message says that my Mac can't find the original folder..
Here is the windows ORIGINAL filepath ://pcmsf01\dept
Here is the new filepath ://pcmfs02\d\dept
The dept folder is the one in question...
As I said, I can mount other folders from the new (pcmfs) server, but I really think that the new naming of the filepath is confusing the Mac

  • Does TC also back up my files on my VMFusion Windows partition?

I have a VMWare Fusion v6 partition to run Windows 7.
I was wondering if Time Capsule will include documents from my Windows environment, specifically Quickbooks, when it does its daily backups?

Not in any useful way. It will indeed save the partition.. every time you change one file (and that might just include starting windows).. TM will be forced to backup the entire windows partition of xxxGB for the sake of 1KB.. and if you ever need to restore a file.. it won't work anyway.. most of the time.
You backup windows inside windows.. there are a zillion windows backup softwares available.. the inbuilt one is useless unless you have pro or ultimate because it cannot backup to network resources.
There are plenty of free ones which will probably do the job.
Genie time line pro is often suggested around here. But there is a free lite version that might work .. and i have used a simple zip program that simply saves any new files in your mydocuments to a zip file on a backup drive..
NOTE.. you MUST exclude the fusion partition file from TM backup.. otherwise your backups will take forever and you will quickly fill whatever space your TC has with useless windows partition files which cannot be restored.

  • Prevent Guest Account from Viewing Windows partition

I recently created a guest account on my MBP. I did this so as to better secure my Mac in the event of theft. I have both a Windows and OS X partition on my Mac, and I have a firmware password so a thief would not be able to boot from Windows or an external disk. My account is password protected, so in order to use my computer, the person would be forced to log in to the Guest account, at which point Orbicule's Undercover would begin its work to help me recover my Mac.
Now, I am concerned that the guest user can see my Windows partition on the desktop when logged in and could then access and/or edit those files. What can I do to prevent this?

it's possible to cook up something that would do this but I would advise you not to waste your time. vast majority of thieves steal computers not to steal your data but to resell them. stolen computers are reformatted and sold within hours if not minutes of theft. a firmware password is no defense. it can be easily circumvented given physical access.
(this fact is conveniently never mentioned by various antitheft software vendors)
just google it up to see how.

  • Disk utility resize mac partition resulted in 'no bootable disk' while starting from bootcamp windows partition

my macbook air had two partitions for Mac OS and Windows XP. Because XP partition is too small, I used disk utitility in Mac OS to shrink the Mac partition, and make a new FAT32 partition, which I expected to use it in windows. Till now, I can find three partitions in disk utitily, MacOS/FAT32(which is totally free)/Bootcamp(windows). And in system preference->boot disk, I can see both Mac OS X and Bootcamp Windows.
But when I reboot the computer and press "option" key while rebooting, I only see two boot device options, "mac os" and "recovery", no Bootcamp Windows.
Anybody can give me a hand to recover my previous windows and use the freed partition in windows? Thanks.

    Hi Stefan!
I have a rather similar problem having a BootCamp Windows 8 Partition. I actually have 2 NTFS partitions for windows and 1 for Mac OS. The situation is:
    0 - for Mac OS
    1 - BootCamp windows (NTFS - boot) - 60GB
    2 - Windows (NTFS) - 100GB
After updating to Maverick I have no idea why, but now I have:
      in Mac OS:
    0 - Mac OS
    1 - BootCamp - 160G
      In Windows:
    0 - Mac OS
    1 - BootCamp - 60GB
I have tried recovering the partition with a windows program, but all it could do is find it, but without any files on it.
How can I restore my partition table to the way it was?!
WHY did Mac OS mess up my windows partition table?
WHY didn't I get a warning that the Boot Table will get altered?!
    Thank you for any help

  • MIssing Albums Folder from Finder window

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought under the "Pictures" folder there should be an "Album" Folder. This Album folder would contain all the albums created in iPhoto. Is this a correct assessment?
If so, I do not have an album folder. How can I get it back? Any help would be much appreciated. As my finder is now, there are some data files but all date folder organizing my photos but no albums.
    Thanks
    Mike

Hi Michael, as Alexander said, they are not more. And may I add, much to everyones dismay. I'll give you a little more info that might help you out.
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

  • I back my music and photos from my windows laptop before it broke on a external hard drive . I just got a new mac book can I use the hard drive to put my wave files and JPEG files on to my mac book

My old lap top broke I save all my music what is wave and my pitches is jpeg on external hard drive
the old laptop was a window base laptop
so I got a new mac coming and I been told my hard drive won't won't on the mac and I lose all my photos and music
    any help
    thanks

If your external drive has the right ports, you should be able to plug it up to your Mac and copy over your photos and wav files. You'll probably (I don't know this for sure as it's been a long, long time since I've dealt with wav files) need to convert the wav files to MP3 or some other format (but I would try opening them directly from iTunes, first - wait a second... yes, iTunes will open wav files).
There are only a fixed number of ways that Windows drive can be formatted and a Mac can read (though not necessarily write) them all. So you should have no trouble with that.
    Good luck,

  • I'm trying to access a Mac OSX xserve's shared folder from a windows xp pc

So I'm trying to access the Shared Folders on a Mac OSX Xserve Server. this server does not provide authentication or home folders, etc. Pretty much using it for network storage. I've been able to successfuly connect to the folders using Windows 7, but the Windows XP computers will not connect. I keep getting a "You might not have permission to this folder" etc dialog box popup.
This is my method of connection. Start -> Run -> \\1.1.1.1 -> Enter.  I see the folders. I double click on the folder icon to access the folder, i get a login dialog box. On the Windows 7 machine I typed in my LOCAL MACHINE'S username and password. Success! On the XP machine, I do the exact same thing and receive the error.
    please Help!
the Macs on my network (96% of users) have absolutely no problem connecting to the server using ⌘K in Finder

Try mapping the drive as normal and then see what happens.

  • Since the 10.9 update -8058 error when copying a folder or file from a windows network server to any other location, why? and how to fix?

I am experiencing a persistant error -8058 when attempting to copy a file or folder from any windows sharepoints to any other server location or to my desktop or locals. Am I the only one or are the others with the same issue since updating to 10.9?
I have tried the finder plist removal suggestion- unsuccessful

I am fairly certain that would not work for me as that is my usaul manner of mounting shares, smb:// or cif://. The enterprise servers do not automount so I commandK. Yesterday when I was troubleshooting 10.9 issues I had to have tech support unlock my account a dozen or more times. So I'm gonna give it a rest until I see an 10.9 update. In my case I don't think Mavericks is ready for enterprise/business use. I am 1 mac vs 350+ PCs.
    Thanks for you help!

  • Viruses, from Windows partition to Mac partition ?

    Hello everyone !
I recently installed Windows on my Mac via Bootcamp. I found two trojan horses on my Windows partition, so I deleted it.
My question is : Can viruses or any other malicious thing go from the windows partition to the Mac partition, or in a general way, switching between partitions ?
    Sincerely.

First their is now way the trojan can move from the windows partition to the macs and even if it did maybe through a USB drive macs and windows are built differently that is why you can't install a windows program on a mac and vise-versa.

    cheers guys
i think its probably a permission thing because i can mount it and use as root, but i never thought of trying to mount as user

  • Windows bootloader although no Windows partition?

I wanted to install Windows XP on my iMac so I could run those Windows programs I run into once and a while. Anyways something happened on the Windows side of the install so I decided to just boot back into Snow Leopard and erase the Windows partition. That's exactly what I did. I erased the partition then added the extra space back to my Snow Leopard partition.
Now whenever I turn on my computer it starts the Windows bootloader and says like "No install found" or something like that. I can get around it by holding the option(alt) key on the keyboard and then selecting the only option which is Mac HDD, it then boots into Snow Leopard. But it gets annoying having to do that every time. Any way to fix this?
    Thanks

You didn't follow (or read:) the guide you are presented with in BC Assistant.
Boot from OS X DVD now and try to use "-" on that 2nd partition, repair, and then extended primary partition. Then use Disk Repair.
That isn't the way to remove a Windows partition. May not work.
    And of course have backups.

  • Easy way to switch to Windows partition?

It seems to be much easier to boot to SL from the Windows partition (because of the icon in the sys tray) than to go the other direction. The only way I have found to boot to Windows from SL is to restart with the options key depressed and select the Windows hard drive. Since I'm a Mac noob I'm betting there's an easier way that I don't know about. Any suggestions?

On a related note, I can't get my Mac Pro to boot the windows side at all with SL installed. I used the Disk Utility to look at the partitions, it says there are two. I installed Windows XP when I was using Mac 10.5 using the Boot Camp Assistant, no problems then, but no I can't get there from here. Holding the option key and restarting gives me only the Mac option. I went to Startup Disk as suggested and if offers me only Mac OS X,10.6 on Macintosh HD and a question marked icon labeled Network Startup. Any ideas on what's happened to my Windows partition?

  • Windows partition ignored by macos, long boot times

So, after boot camp refused to resize my Windows partition, I decided to use the old standby of using GParted off of a linux live cd. I just kinda assumed there would be no problem, but after the fact I've discovered there could be some problems. The most specific thing I can find is that the "msftrees" flag will be set on the partition you make and that it can also cause some trouble with updating the GPT and MBR.
    Anyway, here are my symptoms:
    1. MacOS pretty much ignores the Windows partition (It's Windows 7). It doesn't appear in the startup menu at all and I don't have access to the drive. You might be able to mount it manually, I haven't tried.
    2. Very slow boot times for windows. You can select the option to boot from the Windows partition by holding down option at boot, but the boot takes a very long time. When you select the windows partition, it goes to a blank screen with a blinking underscore character in the upper left for 2~3 minutes and then finally shows the windows loading screen and continues to boot normally.
    Here is my partition layout:

I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents".  Why cant i access the files from my old mac?  I tried the time machine and that isnt working either.  I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such.  I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another.  Please help.

Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
    $ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
    uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
    $ ls -ld Music
    drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here  staff  272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
    $ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes.
