I have gotten my xp stable and would like to know whats the best way to back up this partition or the OS?
I would like to be able, if need be or if bootcamp gets currpted to go back to my nice and stable install thats I have done all the updates for.

Using vitual machine programs (VirtualBox, Parallels, VMWare Fusion) you can run both at the same time.
Load Windows under BootCamp. Then load the VM software and select the existing BootCamp partition as the "virtualized space".
But ... BootCamp first, following Csound1's advice about backups. And you will wantto boost RAM most likely because you need to allocate certain amount of system RAM to each "virtual machine", as well as leaving some for OSX.
But ... BootCamp first.

Can't restore backed up iTunes library on new Windows install

I just reinstalled Windows on my system drive. My previous iTunes library was located on another internal HDD. I installed iTunes on my new Windows install, and tried simply changing my library location to the old location in the preferences, which didn't work for restoring anything. Then I tried starting iTunes whole holding shift, and choosing the old library file, which did nothing. iTunes starts up, and has absolutely nothing in the library, even from the old library file. The library files have a modified date of yesterday, so they haven't been overwritten by starting iTunes and setting the library location to the old location. I also reassigned the drive letter for this drive so it was the same as my previous install so filepaths would be the same.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong? I'd really like to restore my library with all my playlists, playcounts, and ratings.

Daren't sync iPhone to new Windows install. HELP

My old Windows installation was recently plagued by a virus, and as such I had to back everything up, and re-install. I've retrieved all my music off of my iPod Classic, no problems there. Set the iPod to manual, no stupid iTunes wiping.
I also have a first gen iPhone, running 2.1, synced with the old library and not this one. I daren't plug it in due to fear of having it wiped, which would be disastrous as it's the only copy of all my contacts. Photos and music I can re-sync by hand happily. But somebody please tell me it won't wipe all of my contacts, predictive text, text history, apps etc. Is there any way of making it a manual device like the iPod, and only change what I WANT to change?

Oh believe me I'd LOVE a Mac. I'd use Linux if I could, but with the iPod and iPhone I need iTunes. My brother has a MacBook, excellent piece of kit. Mac's my favourite OS, stable and pretty. But I've recently bought a crap load of Photo equipment so I have no real money left lol.
I'd have done an iTunes backup, but I couldn't actually open iTunes. I got all my Photos off the old pc, so that's fine. I just accept a Windows install won't last me that long at any one time. It's a sad fact of life.
I think what I'll do is just manually enter my contacts into Outlook, and then just sync with this library, as long as I have my contacts I'm not fussed, the music needs sorting through on it anyway.
It will work if I put my contacts into Outlook and then sync with this new install won't it?

I no longer want to use vmware fusion to run my windows session, can I use boot camp to launch my vmware windows install or do I have to start again with a brand new installation?

I would like to know if I'm able to use my current VMWare windows installation through Boot Camp, I don't want to use fusion anymore but I'm hoping there's a way to set up boot camp and not have to re-install windows again, if anyone could let me know that would be great

     Thanks for getting back to me. One question, Do I need to install CMS seperately or the does
     the BusinessObjects installs it?
     When I did the BusinessObjects install it installed the Microsoft SQL server 2008 Express and created an
     SQL Server Instance named BOE140. I checked with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (which I downloaded from Microsoft) and saw that no tables were created.
     Regarding the message
     "(.\crypto.cpp:199). (FALSE : digest exception: The FIPS140 shared library could not be found (10027))."
     listed in the log file above, what is my system missing.
     Looks like CMS is not getting installed.
     I am doing the install on a VMware Windows 2008 system with 8 GB ram and 50 GB file space.
     Are there any special requirements of configuration on the Windows system?

Updating ipod on fresh Windows install without losing data?

Hey guys.
I have an 80gb iPod Classic, and my iTunes had about 72gb worth of data in the playlist. Recently I had to reformat my system drive and do a fresh Windows install, and as such my iTunes playlist obviously got wiped. If I readd everything that was on my iPod into the playlist, will iTunes try to wipe my iPod and transfer everything over again, or will it recognize that the files are exactly the same and only copy the new files over that weren't originally on it?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once the iPod is in manual mode you can add to it without losing any content but you will have to drag it from the library yourself: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
However once you are safely connected you can copy content from the iPod to iTunes. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

K8N Neo4-FI Windows install problems (S-Ata problems)

Last week I "upgraded" my computer from Nforce3 (Radeon 9800 Pro) to Nforce4 (Radeon X800GTO) and when I did setup everything the platinum screen just hang but after removing all usb devices and tried to plug one after one in to the computer I located the problem the motherboard didnt like my keyboard so I changed it and I was able to boot, but then another problem came, I cant install windows XP at all, after booting with the cd this white text "checking something computer configuration" and then everything gets black and nothing more happens,
I tried to change memory from (Corsair 3200XL to some other) and still the same problem, did also try to unplug the hdd, floppy and also tried to change the Graphic card from X800GTO to X600 but still no luck.
What can be wrong, I managed to install windows 2003 sever but I really hate when something doesnt work, doesnt feel ok

I have a 3200+ Winchester cpu, 1024 Corsair 3200XL mem and Tagan 430W psu and Connect3d X800 GTO Graphic

I have now located the problem to my S-ata discs, when I unplug them the install starts but when I plug them back I get the same problem, Im not running raid

I suggested what I did because the black screen on Windows install is a common problem when RAID is set to enabled on a NON-RAID array.
One other possibility: ke84 are you installing Windows XP? - and what version is it? If it is pre-SP1 it may have trouble understanding what SATA is. If it is SP1 or later is should work fine without installation of any extra drivers, so long as RAID is set to DISABLED.
I would still try installng on a single disk, connected to SATA-1 on the mainboard, before considering the above problem. If one disk doesn't work, try the other.

Booting Windows Install DVD

I had always split my iMac in to two partitions. One for OSX, one for Windows via Boot Camp and then used that sometimes via Boot Camp and others via VM Ware Fusion. Recently whenever I tried to boot to Windows the computer would hang, and I've have to reset and instead load OSX. All the while I was able to load the Boot Camp partition through VM Ware Fusion.
Having played around a bit I couldn't find an easy solution so I decided to just reformat the HDD as I'd been intending to increase the Windows partition size for a while anyway. So I backed up my OSX install with Super Duper, reformatted, and was able to restore the clone of my HDD to it's new smaller partition easily.
I've been able to load Boot Camp Assistant and have partitioned the drive to my liking and have got to the stage where I insert my Windows Install DVD, which it seems to recognise, the computer restarts and ... nothing.
I've tried;
- * Setting the DVD Drive as the Startup Disk
- * Holding down alt/option at boot and selecting the DVD
- * Plugging in an external and booting from that
- * 4 different versions of Windows DVDs (it should be noted that I can install all of these versions of Windows using VM Ware)
- * Burning my Windows DVD in Disk Utility rather than Toast (not that this is the issue anyway, as the boot loader does recognise a bootable DVD named 'Windows' it just hangs after I select it)
- * Installing rEFIt
- * Repairing the HDD using Disk Utility on the Leopard Install DVD
It's tempting to say the problem must be with my computer not being able to boot from DVDs, but it can boot the Leopard Install DVD.
Any ideas?

In my initial post I had tried 2 versions of Windows XP including one with SP3 integrated, Windows Vista Ultimate, and Windows Server 2008.
I settled on installing Windows XP with SP3 and that is the one that currently won't boot. As with the first time I had a problem however, I can still load up the boot camp partition in VMWare.
Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that usually if I select to boot 'OSX' I can hear fans start spinning etc. but the reverse is true when I select 'Windows' and it hangs - the computer noticeably quietens almost immediately.

1.30 BIOS Screwed Up Windows Install

I'm the owner of a W520 (system specs at the bottom). I finally decided to jump on the BIOS 1.30 train amid news of better power management and forsake my 1.16 BIOS that allowed me to use TurboBoost on battery. After I plugged in my laptop and finished with the BIOS Update Utility from Lenovo's website, the computer rebooted and the message about a chip being flashed was displayed in the lower-left (100% fan speed and all). I was at work at the time and was called away by a customer. When I got back, the power was on and the fans were at normal levels, but the screen was entirely black except for a slowly blinking underscore in the top-left corner. The hard drive activity light blinks extremely faintly, rapidly, and at a consistent pace. I let this be for about 20-25 minutes to be sure it wasn't part of the BIOS flashing process and then decided to troubleshoot. This activity persists every reboot.
Here is what I've done so far:
-Checked BIOS for version (displayed as ver. 1.30 w/ ECP at ver. 1.17)
-Booted into Windows PE and ran MbrFix's "restoreMBR" command on the affected drive
Tomorrow is my one day off a week and I'd like to have at least some of it for leisure, which is why I'm coming to you for help. Has anyone seen this before? Suggestions would be very helpful! Right now I'm wondering whether I should A) Format a flash drive and put my Windows install back on so I can do a Startup Repair or B) Investigate restoring/replacing the MBR or C) Run some kind of hard drive diagnostic or D) Replace the CMOS/Remove Battery/Invoke voodoo magic

Here are the unsuccessful things I've done so far:
-Checked BIOS for version (displayed as ver. 1.30 w/ ECP at ver. 1.17)
-Booted into Windows PE and ran MbrFix's "restoreMBR" command on the affected drive
-Tried pointing Windows repair image running off my USB drive to the drive controller (RST) files, iaStor.inf and iaAHCI.inf. It thinks the files are unrelated to my system hardware.
-From cmd prompt, bootrec.exe/ScanOS sees my installationon the D: drive. Startup Repair claims it has successfully repaired the installation, but reboot produces same problem.
-Built a custom Windows 7 image using RT7 Lite integrating iaStor.inf and iaAHCI.inf into the Drivers section and repeated last step.
-Ran the familiar bootrec.exe /fixmbr then /fixboot then /rebuildBCD commands. They failed, giving the message "the requested system device cannot be found".
-Manually marked partition 1 active on my system drive. Startup Repair failed again and gives me the following error:

How do I go back to start-up window?

I have installed PSE12...
Initially A window (I call it start-up window) appears letting you choose to use Organizer or PhotoEditor... for some reason I see an option to open organizer on start-up...
Now I don't know how to get back to Photo-editor...
Or how can I bring back the start-up window...

Using Time Machine to back up to a Windows 2003 Server

I am trying to set up my Time Machine to back up to a windows 2003 server share. I have found some hacks on how to do so, however i am not successful.
What I have done so far:
TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 in terminal, which got TM to see my shared drives, however, when i try to backup to my specific drive it gives me an error of not being able to write disk image. So i did:
hdiutil create -size 100g -fs HFS+J -volname “TimeMachine Hcomp” Hcomp_000045128a91.sparsebundle
using the appropriate mac address, volume name, and OSX computer name. However, when i run that in terminal, it comes back with a message saying it can only create one volume at a time.
I'm not quite sure where to go from here, I feel so close, but im stuck.
Also, on another side note, If I get this working, I would like to find a way where when TM is backing up data, it does not pop up the work bar window, I would prefer if it just worked in the background, and show it's status in the menu. I dont know if this is possible, But any suggestions would be of help

Since you are using a hack, and therefore in an unsupported area, I suppose anything possible.
You might browse around the TimeCapsule forum which more closely represents what you are doing than this forum

Can you tell me how to get back to just one window at a time?

I sometimes like to use the tile tabs option, however, now every time I open a new window, there is always a minimum of two tabs. I just want to go back to viewing one window at a time when I am opening different windows.

How can i make the volume controller on a pavillion dv4 work after a clean windows install?

Recently I performed a clean windows 7 install from a windows install disk I previously owned, the problem is that this disk didn't intalled the drivers and programs specific for this computer. What I want to know is which driver or program I need to install to make the volume controller on my computer to work again? The problem is that the volume bar that previously appeared on the screen and the "bing" sound indicating the volume level doesn't appear or sound now.
All other things seem to work fine, this is the only problem so far.
