Backing up a USB disk connected to my Airport Extreme

hello,
I can't seem to get Backup or Time Machine to see files on the disk (wireless...) connected to my Airport Extreme - Is this possible? I've seen posts about backing up other "locally" connected drives, but I'm not sure how to go about backing up a drive that's out there wirelessly. If Backup or Time Machine won't do it, does anyone have any recommendations for other software?
tia

thanks for the response - I'm not seeing where SuperDuper can do it either - it's not seeing "shared" stuff - like the disk hanging of the airport extreme. Am I missing an option with that? Seems like there should be some software that can do it.

  • Can a time machine usb drive backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme*

can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

  • Windows 7 can't see USB disk (WD Passport) on Airport Extreme

I am needing some help. I just bought an Airport Extreme and everything is working but I can't see my files on the USB external drive from the Airport Extreme. I can see the drive inside of the Airport Utility but not over the network on my laptop.
    My laptop is Windows 7.
I read somewhere that I may need to reformat my WD Passport but how do I do that in windows 7 and will I lose my files on the drive if I do this?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me!

There are a number of posts related to issues between Windows 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
o From the Vista desktop, click Start
    o Search for: security
    o Click 'Local Security Policy'
o Goto Local Policies > Security Options
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
o Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    o De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    o Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
    o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
o Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
On the AEBS, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • How do I get my macmini running Mountain Lion to see my Canon USB printer connected to my Airport Extreme? I have a macbook pro running leopard and that works fine. The versions of airport utility are different and I can't even see the printer from new 1

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

  • To share a hard disk connected to an Airport Extreme, does it have to be Apple-formatted?

    The title says it all.

The AirPort Extreme will read and write to disks that are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32.
As you know, FAT32 has a 4 GB limitation for any single given file size, so the Mac format would always be recommended.

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

  • Can Time Machine back up a USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme?

If I connect 2 USB drives to an Airport Extreme via a USB hub, can I use Time Machine to back one up to the other? I've found multiple discussions about how to use an Airport Extreme disk as a Time Machine backup disk, but nothing on this. I want to use one disk as network storage (i.e. use the Airport extreme as a NAS), but I need a backup solution for that disk.

That's disappointing. I actually have a separate NAS already, configured for RAID1: a ZyXEL NSA220. Worked fine when I only had windows machines, but isn't reliable with my MACs, and doesn't support extended journaled format, so I need a different solution. I was hoping to just use a USB drive attached to my airport extreme to replace it, but I can't do that if I can't back up that USB drive.
Can anyone recommend a good backup solution? Surely this can't be that uncommon a scenario?

The first important thing to consider here is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme, so that may likely have something to do with your difficulties.
If you want to continue to try this, the drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with a drive at the port of the Extreme...even if the hard drive has its own power supply....because the port on the Extreme is under powered.
Most users who try this unsupported method have corruption difficulties sooner or later, but we do hear from some users who seem to be able to make it work.
The bottom line is that there is no support from Apple on this if you have difficulties, so you may want to consider a secondary backup plan for your important data.

  • Cannot connect to USB disk connected to Airport

I have a USB disk connected to the USB port on my Airport Extreme.  The disk has a volume label already set and had been previously directly connected to my IMac
I've gone into the Airport utility and updated the 'Disks' information to include "Enable file sharing" and "Secure Shared Disks" "With Accounts".  I have the users listed under acounts and have set the passwords, same as login passwords.
But, I can't successfully login to the disk.  I've tried the base station password, the network access pasword, the user password: none work.
    What am I missing here?

Does the disk appear as a volume when you check using the Disk tab in AirPort Utillity?  In the example below, a WD Drive is connected to the USB port of an AirPort Extreme.
If the drive does not appear here first, you will not be able to access it. Check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). FAT32 will also work as well.
Some other formats like NTFS or exFAT might be able to be read when the drive is connected directly to a Mac.....but these formats are not supported with the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
If the drive is formatted correctly, try using a powered USB hub. Connect the powered hub to the USB port on the Extreme, then connect the drive to the powered hub.

LOL.. don't switch off the TC.. this is fairly typical behaviour..
Or try a different usb hub.. but you could well and truly run out of hubs before you fix the problem.
Are you running latest firmware for your TC?
What error message is coming up in the airport utility.. amber led is a fault indicator.. look up what the actual fault is and see if it is for instance overloading the usb. You are using a powered hub??
Get one bigger USB hard disk instead of 3 smaller ones.

  • Airport Extreme and USB Disk Connection

I have attached a Western Digital external drive, that I can successfully see the files on it when connected by USB to my iMAC, but when connected to my Airport Extreme I am unable to see it. I can however, see it successfully within the "airport utility" as a storage device connected to the base station. Why can I not see it and where should I be able to view it from?
    Thanks in advance Neil

    1. I do not see the AEBS in "finder" as I do idisk etc.
    2. I do not see the AEBS in "disk utility" either
You will not see the disk in either Finder or Disk Utility until it is mounted.
I've had the same issue. Always have resolved them by shutting down the disk and disconnecting the USB, also cycle power on your USB hub if your using one. Reconnect the disk and power-up.
I can connect to the server (though not sure what account I should do this as) but there are no volumes to select.
Disk Utility> Disks> File Sharing> Secure Shared Disks, if it's set to "With base station password. you would use the Name and Password of your AEBS
Sounds like your connecting properly, it's just not recognizing the Disk.
One other thing, do you know how your disk is formatted?

  • Is it possible to have two hard drives connected to my airport extreme and use one to store my itunes library/iphoto and the other to backup via time machine?  Will the second (larger) drive back-up both my mac HD and my other external airport drive?

For the past year I've been using an external hard drive (HD1) connected to my airport extreme as the back-up location for time machine.  This has worked fine without any issues.  What I would like to do now is to move my itunes and iphoto libraries off of my laptop (space constraints) and store them on a second external hard drive (HD2) connected to the airport extreme.  I have successfully connected the second hard drive using a Belkin powered USB hub.  What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?  I apologize if this has already been answered but i've read conflicting responses on various message boards and a number of responses were dated so I wanted to make sure I received the latest information.
    thank you

That may be true, but you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.  Do not be surprised if those backups suddenly turn up corrupted.
What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?
No.  Time Machine cannot back up from any network location.  The 3rd-party utilities CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.

  • Computers can't see the disk connected to my Aiport Extreme

    Hi everyone,
I have an Airport Extreme with version 7.3.2 and I just attached a Western Digital external hard drive to the usb port in the back of the router; however, none of my computers can see the disk in the network screen nor the airport router itself. Does anyone know how I can fix this so that I can share the disk with all of my computers?
This is how my network is set up:
I have six computers connected to a Linksys WRT310N wireless router (some with ethernet cables, others wireless). Then, I have the Airport Extreme, in bridge mode, connected to the Linksys router by an ethernet cable. And the external disk is attached to the Airport Extreme.
It sounds complicated, but I talked to an Apple "Genius" a while back and he told me that only Mac computers are able to see the disk through the Time Machine program. That hardly seems right or fair to me.
    Thanks for your help!

On July 15, 2008 someone posted this: "On my air port extreme I have a 160 Gb hard drive connected to the usb. And suddenly it cant find it on my desktop. But when I go to my lap top it finds it just like that. Im runnin the airport 10/100 ethernet to my desktop and 802.11 n/g on my lap top. I tried resetting..."
This is identical to my problem, the hard disk that is connected to the Airport Extreme shows up on the old iBook but not on the MacBook Pro. Both are running OS 10.4.11. It worked fine when it was connected directly to the MacBook Pro and contains the same files it held then.
    Can anyone answer this problem?
