Backing up - advice greatly received.

Advice needed on adequate but not overkill in terms of backing up my data.
Machine came with Leopard, I upgraded to SL and have both sets of original discs. I maintain Time Machine backups, however the external drive for TM is getting full so I'm losing the oldest backups, but I don't believe that's a problem,
Any recommendations would be welcome in terms of taking precautions against losing data and ease of starting from scratch if forced to? Assuming worst case scenario and a new machine is required, it would come with latest OSX Lion, would this present any issues in terms of retreivung data from my SL TM backups?
Thanks.

My advise is to maintain two separate backups: 1. Time Machine, as you're now doing, and 2. Clone your drive, on a regular basis, to a separate bootable external drive. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner(free) or SuperDuper for this. That way, you can be back up & running very quickly if something were to happen to your internal drive.
If you get a new machine, with Lion, you won't have any issues transfering your data from your Time Machine backups.

    It may be in the process of making room.  What version of OSX are you on?    (That process can be excruciatingly slow on Leopard or Snow Leopard backups over a network;  Lion has improved it greatly.)
    A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.   That should help you figure out what's going on.  If in doubt, copy and post them here (but if the same ones repeat over and over, drop most of the duplicates).
    If you can, connect via Ethernet; it will be 2-3 times faster.

    dave0915,
    iTunes stores your iPhone backups in the Library folder in your Home folder.
    iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

    Someone sends me a PDF form when I fill it out and email it back to them they receive it blank-why?

    All the fill-in PDF forms I've used are read/only. Meaning that whatever you fill in does not get stored and saved back with the file.
    As Linc suggests, you will be creating a new PDF, that will not have fillable fields but that will contain whatever you filled in.

  • How to fax from a macbook on a home network? All advice gratefully received

    not sure if i'm being dumb...
    i use a macbook on a home Timecapsule/AirPort network, and I want to be able to fax from it. When I try to do so at the moment, I just get 'Modem not found' and am presuming therefore that MacBook does not have any internal modem.
    But couldn't Timecapsule do it somehow?
    Or do i need to buy/install an additional Apple USB Modem? If so where would I plug it in?
    Or do I just need to suscribe to some service such as eFax, which I'd rather not do if possible?
    Does anyone know???
    All advice gratefully received.

    You can buy a modem for you computer, in which case you can connect it to a phone line and the USB port on your computer. There may be all-in-one printers that allow faxing through them, but I am not familiar with which ones have drivers for that. (I so not understand why there would not be, but manufacturers have not always seen it necessary to provide them.) There may be some of those which may be accessed through a network connection to your Time Capsule.

  • Sending back fault message from receiver to the sender

    Hi,
    Can somebody explain me, how to capture fault message generated by the receiver system back to the sender system?
    I have a synchronous scenario, RFC -> XI -> Web Service.
    When web service returns successful response, it gets mapped properly to an internal table of RFC. But, when web service returns fault message (as parameters passed to the web service are incorrect), RFC gives dump. Below message is shown in sxmb_moni.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
    - <!--  Call Adapter
      -->
    - <SAP:Error xmlns:SAP="http://sap.com/xi/XI/Message/30" xmlns:SOAP="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" SOAP:mustUnderstand="1">
      <SAP:Category>XIAdapter</SAP:Category>
      <SAP:Code area="PARSING">ADAPTER.SOAP_EXCEPTION</SAP:Code>
      <SAP:P1 />
      <SAP:P2 />
      <SAP:P3 />
      <SAP:P4 />
      <SAP:AdditionalText>soap fault: com.ucas.hei.link.exception.WSException: Data access error: Incorrect userId/password. at com.ucas.hei.link.xml.ReferenceData.getRefInstUcas(ReferenceData.java:2338)</SAP:AdditionalText>
      <SAP:ApplicationFaultMessage namespace="" />
      <SAP:Stack />
      <SAP:Retry>M</SAP:Retry>
      </SAP:Error>
    Has anybody worked with this type of scenario? Please help me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    -Smita

    Hi Smitha,
    if you are calling a webserive from XI and the websevice call results in a soap exception, as of SP13 i am sure there is no way to capture this exception.
    Work around approach would be to define exceptions for your sender RFC and hence when an exception is raised in XI, sender RFC will not dump instead you would have the defined exception caught.

  • Need Back-Up Advice

    I am concerned about protecting all of my work, especially my muic recordings  done primarily through GarageBand.
    I have a Time Capsule, which is both a back-up and airport router.
    But if something would happen to my computer (iMac, specs below) and/or Time Capsule (both 3 years old), I could be out of luck. Tons of work could be lost.
    Friend told me I should get an external hard drive. Just as another ensurance device.
    Visited the Apple Store. Browsed around and am focusing on the following:
    LaCie 2TB USB 3.0 Porsche Design P'9233 Desktop Hard Drive
    Sophisticated desktop storage built for speed.
    The LaCie Porsche Design P'9233 is more than just a place to store data – it’s a collaboration between some of the most renowned designers in the world and digital storage experts LaCie. Speed, design and technology are combined to create a external desktop hard drive that’s built for performance.
    Designed for your Mac
    Sophisticated Porsche Design aesthetic
    USB 3.0 speed (USB 2.0 backwards compatible)
    2 TB
    Price: $139.95
    Compatibility
    Mac
    OS X 10.5 or later
    USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port
    (By the way, don't know what the USBs 3.0 or 2.0 means. Is one a Firewire?)
    My intent would be to use this as a back-up for just music and photo files. Don't want it backing up everything on my computer. Time Capsule does that.
    Reiews are very good and the price is right.
    Is this what I need?
    Thoughts, suggestions, advice very much appreciated.
    (Also posting this in GarageBand)

    Yes, this drive will be fine for backup purposes.
    USB 3 is faster than USB 2 ... but unless your Mac has USB 3 you won't see any benefit from having a USB 3 hard drive.   (btw, USB is not FireWire)
    I would recommend these drives.  (Apple stores normally carry them.  You will need to check Apple for prices.  They are also available many other places including B&H PhotoVideo and Newegg - both are reputable online dealers).
    Lacie d2 Quadra
    G-Technology G-Drive or G-Drive Mini
    One other note, please do not post the same question in multiple forums.

  • My iPhone isnt working with messages. The messages tend to get backed up and I receive them all later... The phone won't send iMessage during this time period... What do I do?

    The messages in the phone don't load until hours after they're received and seem to get overloaded very easily

    What would you do for transportation if you drove your car into a tree and had to wait while it was fixed? You'd need to rent, borrow or buy another car, no? The same applies to your phone. This is not Apple's problem; if the service center does not have replacements in stock for immediate swap-out, then it's up to you to provide a backup device or do without.
    If you're in a country where Apple provides direct service for iPhones, you may be able to call Apple support and arrange for advance replacement, where they send you the replacement phone and then you send back the old one. Apple offers such service in several countries, though you have to pay an extra fee for the service. If not, then you'll just have to wait for the service center to get in the replacement, and will have to arrange an alternative to use during that time.
    Regars.

  • Kids' playroom. Connecting WII and Xbox... need advice on receiver

    We just built the playroom and I wired for 5.1 and even ran the HDMI cable behind the wall to connect a receiver to the TV. This is for the kids room, may upgrade sometime, but they are 8 and 10, so sound purity and quality is not a big issue. Simplicity, simple operation and ability to have a single HDMI connection from receiver to TV is most important. Have simple Insignia speakers with powered subwoofer, now want to pick least expensive receiver for this room. Would also consider returning speakers if there is a home theater system that accepts both HDMI and analog input and does the job. Thanks!

    Yes, I had considered running an etherent cable to the bedroom, but my wife doesn't like the idea of seeing the cable snaking through hallways.
    In the bedroom, I have connected the imac, mac mini and the AEBS with etherent cable.  It's just my connection to the internet that does not have the benefit of ethernet, although the speed I get from my cable internet is much slower than the wifi connection.
    I would eventually like to move the cable modem upstairs and use the AEBS as the primary base station and the AX downstairs to extend my wireless network.  However, there is an issue in that the cable modem has to be the only device on the cable connection and I am currently using the cable connection to carry my DISH Network signal and basic cable signal to the bedroom.
    I guess my question really boils down to this...Would an AE in place of the AX give a stronger signal to the 2nd AE in the bedroom.  I will turn off the AE tonight and see what kind of a signal I get from the AX downstairs.  I haven't tried it, but I suppose I could also move the Airport Extreme (5th Gen) downstairs and hook it directly to the cable modem and not even use the AX because the signal from the new AE should be as good or better than last year's AX - but then I would lose the gigabit ethernet between those devices - which is why I haven't done that yet.
    I could also drop the $$$ on a Time Capsule for the bedroom and use it for all my backups (but that's kinda what I'm hoping to do with the mac mini) and move the AE downstairs to the cable modem.
    Decisions, decisions.

  • Back Up advice...

    Hi All,
    I've never really got into 'backing up' my computer before... dangerous I know, but I've always taken my chances.
    However, more and more my computer is becoming 'Mission Critical'... it's no longer a risk I can bear.
    Maybe someone could point me in the right direction re: the best back-up solution for my system.
    I have a Mac Pro which I use a 'dual boot' system. One for OS X and the other for Vista (via Boot Camp). Both systems need to be backed up...
    I have two internal drives... a 150GB Raptor boot drive... a 750GB drive for storage.
    Questions,
    1. Could I/Should I use the 750GB internal storage drive as a backup drive...??
    2. Can I use one drive to back up both OSX and Vista...? If so, I guess I'd have to partition the drive and format each partition seperately...?
    3. Could I/Should I consider using 'Time Capsule' for this purpose or should I consider another option.
    Help appreciate.
    Yours Confused.

    All I can express an opinion on is question 1 and 3:
    1. Could I/Should I use the 750GB internal storage drive as a backup drive...??
    Though it would work, I wouldn't suggest if as your sole backup. Should something happen to the system as a whole - failure of the logic board, or instance, or theft, fire or other damage - you'd lose all access to your data. You should have some sort of removable medium - external hard drive, DVDs, tape, etc. - that you take off site after you make a backup. Otherwise you're at serious risk. I would recommend doing multiple backups, actually; one perhaps to an internal drive (which would allow you quick access should you lose a document or have a drive fail) and one to a removable that you take off site, and do both backups regularly. And the off-site backups should preferable be rotated so that you are backing up to two or three different devices/media sets, switching daily (or at whatever frequency makes sense for the amount of new and changed data you create) so that you always have a reasonably current set off site every day.
    3. Could I/Should I consider using 'Time Capsule' for this purpose or should I consider another option.
    Other people who've actually used TC may chime in, but I would not consider any wireless storage to be suitable as the sole backup for mission critical data. I've seen too many issues with wireless being erratic to consider it reliable. A TC would be acceptable, perhaps, for "near line" storage if you need to share a backup device among more than one computer, but you should still back up to a medium that you can take off site.
    Regards.
