Backing up and restoring iPhone if computers change

My employer provides me with an MacBook OSX laptop and I was thinking of syncing all my iPhone stuff to that machine.
But since this is my employer's machine, I would have to give it up if I ever quit, or if they want me to change to a different machine for some reason.
So if I sync everything to the MacBook, is there an easy way to backup or transfer the contacts to another machine? If I connect up the iPhone to another computer/itunes can I send my contacts to it too?

I too need to find out how to backup my SMS/MMS data in way that allows me to restore it to the phone. The problem is that I have corrupted software on my phone. I need to wipe the phone and sync with iTunes as a new phone, without restoring from a previous backup. If I restored the phone from a previous backup, the phone would inherit the corrupted software of the previous backup as well. I have to do a fresh install and sync. MobileMe will take care of restoring my contacts, notes, bookmarks, calendars and mail. MobileMe does not back up SMS/MMS data. What I am looking for is a way to back up the current SMS/MMS data to the computer and then sync it to my freshly wiped iPhone that is synced with iTunes as a new phone. Third party software is fine, as are lengthy, intricate, complicated processes. The goal is simply to get the SMS/MMS data off of my phone and then back onto my phone after it is wiped.

I backed up the files from my iPhone to my computer before restoring but I don't know where the files are now.
Does anyone could help to clarify. Thanks.

You wont have direct access to the backup.
to ensure the backup file was created sucessfully
In iTunes go to > Edit > preferences > Devices. you will see backups in that list by date/time

  • Having trouble sync'ing. Receiving Overcapacity error on my 64GB iPhone 5. Backed up and restored but still having sync issues.

I have an iPHone 5 64GB with iTunes 11 installed on an 2 yr old HP laptop running Windows 7. I am having sync'ing issues. I am receiving an overcapacity error I have not seen before even though I can manually remove audiobooks I have previously loaded to get the overcapacity down below the available 64GB limit. I have removed most of them now and can get the sync to begin. Not sure if it will actually complete. But now I do not have but a relatively few audio books loaded. I have backed up and restored to see it that helps but am still getting the same overcapacity error. Seems whatever I had included was doubled in an "other" category. Also, in the recent upgrade to iTunes, it takes forever to sync when I change content. Sync'ing takes a lot longer than before. Has anyone else experienced similar performance issues.

Lawrence Finch has previously provided the following helpful info...
"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
Text messages   (*** this can take up a lot of space)
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
If you have a lot of text messages stored, that can make "Other" very large.  Another problem area is corrupted files.  When app and data files become corrupted, they may end up in "Other".  To fix that, perform a restore from a recent backup.  That prevents corrupt files from showing up.

  • Backing up and restoring X2 iphones - having conflict issues

    Hi,
My wife and I have been using the 3gs for 2 years and have now upgraded ;-) I pluged mine into itunes and backed it up, then pluged in my new one and restored and it all works fine.
However when I tried to backup my wifes phone and then restored -  it just restored as mine again, so we had 2 new phones with all my details on it!!
So I restored to factory setting on the iphone 4s
I have tried uninstalling Itunes and reinstalling but it still has my phones info on it.
Please can you tell me how to back up and restore my wire iphone and for it not to keep using my phones details ??
    Thanks Chris.

As long as you are NOT running a production application on Oracle's Hosted site.. You can't really run a scheduler job, since it would usually export stuff to your local server, but you don't have access to that on Oracle's site.. Unless you just want to build a form to output data from your tables, that would push the data down to your workstation, there is no other rel means.. Other hosting companies will allow you to use Sql Developer and such, but then again you are paying to use their site..

when i try to restore it.. it is taking 15+ hours .. and that time stays like that for almost 3 hours...  it does not happen.
i even called the apple help center. and they said me to install as a new device... and when i said what wil happen to my messages.. they say .. they wont stay.. and wil be deleted.. and all my apps i need to download again..
but earlier i din need to do any of it.!!! it worked really fine .!!!
please help me..!!! i got some important details in this back up.... please help me.!!!

Once in a while the restore process seems to mess up.  What I don't understand is why you would perform a weekly restore.
At any rate, if you must restore, perform a device reset (settings>general>reset) and then you will have the opportunity to restore from iCloud.  Restore a device whenever it no longer works correctly, not just as a matter of maintenance.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Where did you get the iPhone?

  • My Iphone 5, was backed up and restored.  Music doesn't sync, when reconnecting device each time, it only offers restore or new phone rather than sync option.  Can anyone help please?

My IPhone 5, was backed up and restored.  Music doesn't sync, when reconnecting device each time, it only offers restore or new phone rather than sync option.  I have reinstalled ITunes but still this hasn't worked.  Can anyone help please?

This problem started last year when ios 8 was released. I think apple is trying to force users to buy music on iTunes store and that's why it's impossible to sync other music and also that's the reason why they haven't solved this serious problem. That's really disappoints me and i'm angry with apple because i have like 10 gb of music in mp3 and i can't sync music from iTunes to my iPhone.

  • HT201407 Per the "Completing Authorized iPhone Unlock" instructions, I connected to iTunes to back up and restore so my iPhone can be unlocked! But after the restore my iPhone is stuck at the activation screen, it will not activate.

Received an authorized unlock code from apple/AT&T for my off-contract 3GS (8GB). Per the “Completing Authorized iPhone Unlock” instructions, I connected to iTunes to back up and restore so my iPhone can be unlocked! But after the restore my iPhone is stuck at the activation screen, it will not activate saying “Your iPhone cannot be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable”. I tried this again and again for countless times, no way! I have my old AT&T simcard and other carrier’s simcard. Both will not help. Please help me to activate and start using my phone.

  • HT201328 Hi I have been allowed to unlock my iphone recently by AT/T. I want to keep my existing ios (5.0.1)  as it is on my iphone now.  I've been told to back up and restore by itunes but I am worry of updating my ios to the latest version automatically

    Hi
I have been allowed to unlock my iphone recently by AT/T.
I want to keep my existing ios (5.0.1)  as it is on my iphone now.
I've been told to back up and restore by itunes but I am worry of updating my ios to the latest version automatically.
Please let me know how to keep the existing ios during the unlocking process.
    Thanks and nest regards

Restoring your phone, as is required to complete the unlock of your phone WILL update your iOS to the most current version.  There's no way around this.
Either you keep 5.0.1 and a locked phone, or you get 6.0 and an unlocked phone.  Your choice.

  • I have the email confirming iphone is unlatched but need to unlock through itunes.  To do this, do I use old sim or new sim? I have backed up and restored but there is no message from itunes saying the phone is unlocked?  Please help

I am having problems unlocking my iphone 5. I have received an email from my old provider confirming that the phone is being unlatched and I need to complete the process through itunes.  I have backed up and restored but I have not received a message from itunes stating the phone is unlocked.  Do I use the old or new sim card while connecting to itunes or does it not matter.  I dont know what else to do to finish the unlock?

You can use either, but if you restored to the backup, then you will not see the message. You need to restore the device as new first, then restore the backup. Make sure you can continue with the unlock first. Many of the emails report, "Your unlock has been approved, restore your device in iTunes in 24 hours", or something like that. If it is ready to go, then as I said earlier, restore as new first, and then you should see the confirmation.

How do I find out my password to back up and restore my new iphone 6? Its not the same as my iTunes password..

I am guessing you are talking about an encryption password that you placed on the backup you put into iTunes on your computer.
If so, you elected to encrypt your iPhone's backup.  You will need to recall that password, or you cannot access the backup.

  • HT201263 Since my iPhone 4S was stuck on the connect to iTunes screen after updating to iOS 7, I followed these instructions and restored.  But nothing changed!  I still have the same picture of a plug with arrow to iTunes.

It is restored now.  Thanks for the comment about disabling firewalls - we did that and tried again and it worked.

  • How do I back up my restored iPhone to iTunes, without it reloading old content?

How do I back up my restored iPhone to iTunes, while setting it up as new, without having it reload all my old apps? I tried once, setting it up as a new iphone, and it reloaded all my old apps anyway. I then restored the phone AGAIN, and haven't plugged it into my computer for fear of it doing it again. I want to start over new and back up the "new" phone with my new apps, and sync my old photos, but I do not want to sync old apps.

    - Try on another computer
    - Try another cable
    - Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
