Backing up Apps from ipad to itunes

Hi - I have an old ipad vs 1 which hasn't had it's OS updated for ages. When I connect it to my computer, and want to update the os, I'm told by itunes that all the apps will go, and to back them up. The problem I have is that I have an iphone with all its apps backed up to itunes. I can't find a way to just back up the apps on the ipad to itunes without syncing the whole lot, which will mean that all my apps from my iphone will go onto the ipad, which I don't want. Basically, how do I manually back up the apps from my ipad.
Thanks,
Mark.

Doing File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases) will copy any apps (and any other purchases e.g. music, films etc) that aren't on your computer's iTunes over to it from your iPad. Copying purchases over to your iTunes library won't affect a device's backup, and backing up your iPad won't affect your iPhone's backup.
Before starting the update you may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.  The update process should take a backup, empty the iPad, install the new iOS version, and then restore the backup so that the previous contents are copied back (but for a restore to work fully you need all of the relevant apps on your computer's iTunes as they are not included in a backup, just their content and setting, which is one reason why you should do the Transfer Purchases).
Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (it doesn't support iOS 6).

  • Abort transfer app from iPad to iTunes

How to abort transfer app from iPad to iTunes when sync process? Every time when I sync my iPad Mini (iOS 8.1.3.) to iTunes (Mac OS, 12.0.1) every app is copied to iTunes media on my Mac. How avoid this unnecessary process?

If you only delete the files from your Mac via Finder, but leave them listed in the Apps part of your iTunes library, then they will not be copied back from your iPad when you sync again (unless there is a newer version on it).
If you do have to restore to a backup at any point in the future then to restore to an iTunes backup you will need the apps on your computer (a backup does not contain the actual apps, just their content/settings), and you may not be able to redownload them from the store (e.g. if the developer has removed them). An iCloud backup also doesn't contain your apps, it will redownload what it can from the store.

  • Syncing selected apps from iPad to iTunes

Is there a way to transfer only selected apps from iPad to iTunes? I would like to transfer only apps that need an update so that i can update it with iTunes instead.

You can only install new apps on iTunes and transfer them to iPad,you cannot update apps that are already on your iPad using iTunes.

  • Old computer crashed. Bought new computer.  Downloaded itunes.  How do i get my apps from IPAD to itunes on new computer?

my old computer crashed.  I bought a new one and downloaded itunes.   When I try to Sync my IPAD, I am asked if I want to replace the apps on my IPAD with the apps on the computer.    There are no apps on the computer except the few that are installed when you have a new device.  I am afraid of losing all of my apps and info on my IPAD.  How do I sync and not lose anything?

You need to transfer all content from the iPad into the iTunes library, backup the iPad, restore from the backup and then sync with iTunes. If you had the iTunes library stored or backed up elsewhere, that would be the ideal thing to use, but apparently you don't have I backed up so .....
It is all explained in this discussion.

  • Backing Up iBooks from iPad to iTunes

I have been looking for instructions as to how to backup purchased iBooks on my iPad. Under the Books tab, synching iBooks will erase everything else on the iPad. How to backup the iPad to the computer in general and for iBooks in particular is sought.

If it does not prompt you to transfer purchases, go to *Transfer Purchases from "My iPad"* in the iTunes File menu when your iPad is connected to iTunes.

How do I move a backed up app from my Mac to my iPad?

Connect the phone to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (on iTunes 11 on a PC you can enable the sidebar via control-S), and then on the right-hand side of iTunes select the Books tab and you should then be able to select and sync the audiobook to your phone - when you have audiobooks on your phone you should get an Audiobooks section in the Music app

  • How can I stop iTunes from transferring purchased apps from iPad to computer?

How can I stop iTunes from transferring purchased apps from iPad to my computer? I don't want them taking up space on my computer. iPad backups and apps on the cloud are enough to ensure my apps are backed up, so I don't understand why they need to be on iTunes too. I'm running Mavericks, iTunes 11.1.5 and iOS 7.0.6.

There isn't an app for that!
As far as I can tell there is no option to give you that control. It is worth noting that apps can be withdrawn from the store at any time. Should your device need restoring you need all the apps in your library to transfer to it before the app data can be successfully restored. Pulling that all down from the cloud would be time consuming.
If space is becoming an issue you should consider moving the library to a bigger drive (which you should also backup to another).
As a temporary measure you could try deleting some larger apps using Finder from within iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications while keeping the entries in your library. iTunes may complain during syncs that it cannot copy apps to the device because they cannot be found, but it should not clear them from the device. Test first on a single app that doesn't have any data that you would mind losing in case the behavior has changed from the last time I tested it.

  • Can't transfer apps from iPad 2 to new iPad 3

    Hi,
I just got the new iPad and wanted to move everything from my old iPad 2 to the new iPad.
    Here's what I did:
    1. I backed up my old iPad to iTunes
    2. Connected the new iPad and did restore from the backup in item 1
I only get music and other data but NO APPS and their data. I've done it several times so not sure what's going on.
I also start fresh with the new iPad and do the transfer after resetting it (use Erase all contents and settings).
I did this before for my iPhones with no problems so not sure why this is not working.
    Your help in appreciated.
    Thanks.
    AQ

Create the backup in iCloud rather than iTunes. Apps are not stored as part of the backup, but they will automatically be downloaded, and in the same arrangement as you had them on the old iPad, and with all of their data. For some reason, iTunes is not automatically restoring apps, which is why it's best to use iCloud.

  • When I try to sync photos, I followed all the steps, picked one folder.  When I hit "apply" I get this error message: Are you sure you want to remove 30 apps from iPad.  This will delete these apps and their data from the iPad. What have I done wrong

When I try to sync photos or music, I followed all the steps, picked onle folder, not the whole library.  When I hit "apply" I got this message:
Are you sure you want to remove 30 apps from iPad.  This will delete these apps and their data from the iPad" What can I change to just download the photos and not interfere with the apps?
(By the way, the memory is not even one quarter full)
Thanks for your help - Pat

I have the same problem.  I updated my mac to 10.5, which then had me update apps like itunes, etc. then it wanted me to sync my purchased music to my ipad before i updated the ipad...which worked ok. then when i was syncing the photos i got the same message when i hit "apply" asking are you sure you want to delete the 12 apps from the ipad -  clicked "no" and brought me back to the original screen. Got the same message when trying to move them from the hard drive to the ipad.  WHat is going on and how do I correct this? Thanks

  • Down load an app from ipad to mac

was wondering about i guess transfering an app from ipad to my new mac....yes im new to the apple world!

You can copy an app from your iPad to Mac's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases, or you should be able to re-download it directly on your Mac's iTunes (re-downloading) - you can then take a backup of it and/or use it in the future if you need to resync/restore it back to your iPad (you can't use iPad apps on a Mac as they are different operating systems)

  • I have deleted some apps from iPad.

I have deleted some apps from iPad. When I connect it to Mac, Itunes starts to sync ipad and all apps installed back!!! Why??? I wanted to send one m4a file to iPad, but iTunes started a huge sync process all over 3 hours and + 1 hour I was deleting not needed apps. Please - help! We all need one app iTunes - to have a simple tool to sync devices, but this process became NOT simple. Now I am afraid of it! I want to do everything not to connect my iPad to Mac.
Please - make it simplier! I want to have a control of this process and do what I want to do.
