Backing up/archiving songs/loops on an external drive rop

I have some questions about backing up songs. I want to verify that this is correct. I want to make sure that I get everything backed up since my home computer crashed and you never know when something could happen to my work computer.
I know in order to keep all the loops saved within the project I have to archive the file. When I archive the file, it creates a zip file. Is this correct? then I can move that zip file to either a dvd or an external hard drive, correct? if I open the zip file on another computer, my song/project should open up and have all of the loops and everything in them, correct? Is this the correct and most efficient way of backing up projects? It is vital that all of the loops remain as well.
Actually what I have been doing is saving them to dvd for now (i am going to get an external to store more on). I create a burn folder and then open up garageband and select the song/project, copy, paste into burn folder, create archive. Then a zip file appears into the burn folder and I can burn that. I only need to burn the zip file, correct? I don't have to burn the original file....

"Create Archive" using the Finder
AND
"Save As Archive" inside Garageband are two completely different and unrelated things.
Using the Finder "Create Archive" creates a zip file.
Using "Save As Archive" in GB Places all of your loops that you used for that particular tune into a .band file. This does NOT occur unless you choose "Save As Archive".
"Save As Archive" is not a file compression in any manner or concept.
If you use the Finder's "Create Archive" on a .band file without first implementing GB's "Save As Archive" function all of your songs loops will NOT be inside the .band file and if your try to open that .band file on another computer that does not also have those same loops from the original computer they will be missing on the second computer.
GB's "Save As Archive" is like making a little suitcase of all your loops from that tune to carry somewhere else. It is not a compression function.
So first:
"Save As Archive" in GB
Then:
:Create Archive" of that .band from the Finder

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

Easy way, CLONE IT to another HD
    HD cloning software options:
    1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
    2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
    3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.

    BAD IDEA
You want one backup (ie Time machine) and one (or more) data archive of just all your raw files (drag and drop, or cloned etc.)

  • Moving Loops to an External Drive..possible?

    Hey there..
Just upgraded to GB3. My previous version included 2 of the Jam Packs and I just bought the World Music pack. But my Powerbook is running a little low on disk space so I want to move all my loops to an external drive. Is there a simple way to do this or do I have to remove and reinstall everything. Also is there any way to make GB run from a drive that doesn't have OSX on it?
    Thanks in advance!

Is there a simple way to do this or
do I have to remove and reinstall everything.
These are the steps for doing so with GB2, the location of the loops may have changed, but this should get you on the right path:
    Quit GB if it's running
    Move the loops found in
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Apple Loops/
to your external drive, along with any loops you may have installed from other sources.
Delete the files in the folder:
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Apple Loops Index/
is there any way to make GB run from a drive that
    doesn't have OSX on it?
I can't say for absolutely certain under GB3, but as of version 2, GB's support files need to be on the Boot drive, so it has to have OS X on it.

  • I want to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard. When trying to back-up to a WD 1 TB external drive, the back-up process stalls at about 4 GB. Grateful for any clues to assist with the backup issue please.

I want to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard, then to Lion. When trying to back-up to a WD 1 TB external drive, the back-up process stalls at about 4 GB download. I would be very grateful for any clues to assist with the back-up process please.

That disk is very probably formated as FAT 32, the normal format for PCs. FAT 32 cannot support files larger than 4 GB; also, it corrupts some types of Mac OS files. If you want to securely backup your mac files, you must have a disk prepared for Mac OS.
Therefore, open Disk Utility, choose again 1 partition for your external disk and, under Options, GUID partition map (it may also be a boot disk for an intel mac), then format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. Y0u are done.
If you want to exchange data with PCs, you should chose Master Boot REcord and NTFS format, for this you must use a additional utility like NTFS-3G. But note that mac files may also get corrupt in NTFS format.

  • I have a Macbook which is running Snow Leopard. I back up using time machine to an external drive. If I purchase a new Apple Macbook pro running Lion if I use the backup to this will I be able to use Leopard on the new computer

I have a Macbook running Snow Leopard which I back up to an external drive using time machine.  If I purchase a new MacBook pro and transfer backup from time maching to MacBook Pro will it also transfer Snow Leopard as its is my preferred O.S.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If the new computer did not originally ship with Snow Leopard installed, no, you will not be able to go back from Lion. Snow Leopard lacks the necessary drivers required for newer hardware.

  • If I move my itunes and photo libraries to an external drive, will they still be backed up via time machine (on another external drive)?

I have 2 external drives, one of which I would like to use to store my iphoto and itunes libraries (to create space on my laptop hard drive).  Then I have a 1tb drive that I'm going to use for my time machine backup.  Will I be able to back up the itunes and iphoto libraries from the external drive onto the time machine drive with the rest of the files that are on my laptop hard drive?  Thanks.

Depends on the version of the OS that you are using I would post on the forum for the version of the OS that you are using.
Later version od Time machine will, definitely. If the version you have doesn't, then there are plenty of 3rd party back up utilities that wll do the job for you.
If you're moving the iPhoto Library then remember the disk needs to be formatted  Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • ITunes Match songs on library with external drive

    Hi,
I have all my music on an external drive (and my library files on the internal drive). I activated iTunes Match so I can listen to my music when the drive is not present. iTunes Match activated succefully and I see all my music on my iPhone. But when I launch iTunes without the external drive present and I try to play a song it just prompts me to locate the missing file and it doesn't give me the option to play it from the cloud. Is this fuctionality not supported or am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance.

As Jim says not all DRM-restricted tracks will be eligible to be "matched." If you bought them from the iTunes Store then they will still be "purchased" and the only way the DRM can be removed is to burn them to an Audio CD and import them to the iTunes library again. However, this does not guarantee they will then be "matched" either.
To see the iCloud Status of any tracks switch to Song view in iTunes and pull down View > View Options and select "iCloud Status" then close the small window. The tracks that are still DRM-restricted will most likely be either "purchased" or "uploaded."

  • How to back up my iphoto events to an external drive

I have a Lacie external drive. I really just want to back up my pictures from the Iphoto, but everytime i try to do it , it will just transfer the pictures without the events.
I had try the time Machine, but it will take me 15 days to dowloadteh entire computer.
I have over 12,000 pictures and videos..I need help. I want to keep them save with me in case my computer get lost.

restoring a formatted drive - not sure I'm following you there
but in the future the best way is to reformat the drive, hook up your external hard drive, and then drag and drop those music files back into your my music folder the exact opposite of when you drug them onto your external drive
worst case is you would have to point itunes to that music folder through options

  • Archiving iMovie 7.1 on external drives

I am digitizing old family movies via iMovie (7.1) that is housed on my MacBook Pro laptop (10.4.11). To save hard drive space I would like to archive these and others movies on a 500 GB external drive, and THEN erase them from my laptop drive. I want to make sure I am doing things right before I get too far into the project.
Can I just move the iMovie Projects to the external drive, or do I also need to move the iMovie Projects AND Events over. Do I need to install the iMovie software package in the external drive as well?
If there is an easier ot more efficient way of doing this kind of work, I'd welcome all suggestions
    Thanks,
    EW

The external drive MUST be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and MUST be connected by firewire.
Keep the application on your startup drive, but the projects can reside on the external drive, subject to the above.
Make doubly sure everything works before deleting the originals!

  • How best to back up two Macs to one TM external drive

    Dudes,
I have a white MacBook 1.83 running Leopard and a new Air (rev a) also running Leopard.
I have a wireless network through my Airport Express.
I currently backup the MacBook using TM via FW to an external drive.
How best to back the Air up to this drive too?
Shall I just USB it in, or........................
Can I mount the external drive on my MacBook desktop, then - via filesharing - point the Air's TM towards this? This would save another lead down the back of the desk and lots of tedious plugging in.
    But can it be done?
    Thanks
    Johnnycakes

You can certainly backup your MacBook Air (MBA) to your FW HDD attached to your MacBook if it has Leopard (i.e. Time Machine). Just enable file sharing to that drive for the MBA.
Thanks very much - I'll give it a try.
Even if your external HDD has USB, if you plan on doing wireless backups, the backup format of a Time Machine backup for a locally connected drive (connect via USB) is incompatible with that of a TM backup over a network (the MBA wireless backing up to the external HDD connected to the MacBook). You cannot switch over later.
Thanks - I didn't know that! So if I start of doing wireless backups, I either have to keep going with it, or start over if I chose to switch to USB?
It's too bad you don't have the AirPort Extreme Base Station. A USB HDD could then have been connected to the Extreme and shared by all network users and also be connected via ethernet. Now, the MacBook has to be on for the MBA to backup.
Yes, am thinking that the Airport Extreme or Time Capsule might be the way forward...
One last thing - Peter Miller mentioned that backing up wirelessly, in his opinion, wasn't as stable as a wired USB backup - what's your (or other people's) opinion on this?
    Thanks

  • Does TM back up super duper running on same external drive?

I have a 4TB external drive partitioned in half.  2TB for TM and 2TB for Super Duper  (I know that if the drive goes bad, both backups are gone).  When TM runs, does it backup the Super Duper data from the other partition?  In other words, does TM see the other half of the 4TB drive as something to back up?  If it does, how can I exclude it from doing so?
If I can, I see Super Duper drive (half of the partition) in the TM preferences.  Do I have to click the + to exclude it?  thanks

When TM runs, does it backup the Super Duper data from the other partition?
    No.
