Backing up / archiving TC

I use my Time Capsule not only to back up the computer, but also as primary storage for an extensive music library (among other things). To back up the TC itself, I understand that you can hook up an external USB hard-drive to the TC and archive via Airport Utility. My question is: Is it possible to do this with selected files only? In other words, once I've done the initial mass back-up, is there a way of just transferring 'new' files to the external drive, or do I have to transfer everything each time? Thanks...

Is it possible to do this with selected files only?
Sorry, but no. That would not be an "archive", which will copy everything on the drive each time that you "archive".
You might want to take a look at something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync to copy "normal" files. All of the normal files on the Time Capsule drive will be backed up on the first pass, and then only changes will be backed up.
A note of caution here though....both applications will likely treat any Time Machine backups as a complete file, so the entire Time Machine file will likely be backed up if any changes have occurred.

  • Which publishing service to use for Newstand & managing back issue archive?

    I'm just in the process of creating a Newsstand publication and I'm looking at the various options from YuDu,Adobe, Kindmags etc. The question I have is, if I'm using one provider to publish but decide to move to another, how to I manage my back issue archive? Is the publisher's archive managed independantly of the uyploading service.
    For example, I may be using YuDu to publish, but subsequently move to Adobe's Digital Publisher Suite. What will happed to any back issues I've created? It's an issue that makes choosing the correct partner at the outset very important.
    Any advice on this would be very welcome.

  • Delete old and backed up archive log,

    Hi all,
    Am trying to modify our RMAN backup script to delete old and backed up archive logs off the disk.
    We run daily Incremental L0 or L1 backups, with 3 daily archive log backups. Currently we delete archive logs as they are backed up (backup archivelog all delete input). However, we are considering leaving x days worth of archive logs on disk, just in case, quick restore is needed (e.g. tablespace media recovery etc. etc.)
    For example,
    We can delete archive logs old tha n x (where x=no_days depending on database) by,
    delete archivelog until time 'sysdate-15';
    We can also delete archive logs that have been backed up to disk by,
    delete archivelog all backed up 1 times to disk;
    Questions,
    1) Why does 'backed up 1 times to disk' require the 'all' in the statement ?
    2) Is there any way to combine the 2 statements ? (backed up 1 times and older than x days ?). Just being a bit extra cautious to ensure that we have everything backed up. In real-world shouldn't be a problem, as we will be alerted to any backup failures, but trying to cater for the very worst situation.
    Thanks for your help and insight.

    Hi,
    Scratch the questions. Found the answer in another thread. Seems when I tried to combine the statements initally, I had a typo.
    It is now working as expected.
    Thanks and regards,

  • Backing up/archiving songs/loops on an external drive rop

    I have some questions about backing up songs. I want to verify that this is correct. I want to make sure that I get everything backed up since my home computer crashed and you never know when something could happen to my work computer.
    I know in order to keep all the loops saved within the project I have to archive the file. When I archive the file, it creates a zip file. Is this correct? then I can move that zip file to either a dvd or an external hard drive, correct? if I open the zip file on another computer, my song/project should open up and have all of the loops and everything in them, correct? Is this the correct and most efficient way of backing up projects? It is vital that all of the loops remain as well.
    Actually what I have been doing is saving them to dvd for now (i am going to get an external to store more on). I create a burn folder and then open up garageband and select the song/project, copy, paste into burn folder, create archive. Then a zip file appears into the burn folder and I can burn that. I only need to burn the zip file, correct? I don't have to burn the original file....

    "Create Archive" using the Finder
    AND
    "Save As Archive" inside Garageband are two completely different and unrelated things.
    Using the Finder "Create Archive" creates a zip file.
    Using "Save As Archive" in GB Places all of your loops that you used for that particular tune into a .band file. This does NOT occur unless you choose "Save As Archive".
    "Save As Archive" is not a file compression in any manner or concept.
    If you use the Finder's "Create Archive" on a .band file without first implementing GB's "Save As Archive" function all of your songs loops will NOT be inside the .band file and if your try to open that .band file on another computer that does not also have those same loops from the original computer they will be missing on the second computer.
    GB's "Save As Archive" is like making a little suitcase of all your loops from that tune to carry somewhere else. It is not a compression function.
    So first:
    "Save As Archive" in GB
    Then:
    :Create Archive" of that .band from the Finder

  • Can individual projects be backed up/archived?

    Before making drastic changes to an existing project, how can I make a backup/archive in case my changes are for the worse? I'd like to duplicate a project, work on it, and if the changes are good, keep this version. If my changes don't work out, I'd like to go back to the "original" archive and proceed.

  • Backing up Archive logs

    Hi!
    What is the best approach for backing up the Archive Logs?
    Because we must do this regularly, a scheduled job should be considered.
    Thank you!

    How you backing up the database and archive logs currently? Are the backups scheduled or ran manually?
    You can use Windows scheduler or cron on Unix (you did not provide OS or database version) to schedule the backup, or you can schedule the backup of the archive log in the database using DBMS_JOB or DBMS_SCHEDULER.

  • Issue with backing up Archive logs

    Hi All,
    Please help me with the issues/confusions I am facing :
    1. Currently, the  "First active log file  = S0008351.LOG"  from "db2 get db cfg for SMR"
        In the log_dir, there should be logs >=S0008351.LOG
        But in my case, in addition to these logs, there are some old logs like S0008309.LOG, S0008318.LOG, S0008331.LOG  etc...
        How can I clear all these 'not-really-wanted' logs from the log_dir ?
    2. There is some issue with archive backup as a result the archive backups are not running fine.
        Since this is a very low activity system, there are not much logs generated.
        But the issue is :
        There are so many archive logs in the "log_archive" directory, I want to cleanup the directory now.
        The latest online backup is @ 26.07.2011 04:01:04
        First Log File      : S0008344.LOG
        Last Log File       : S0008346.LOG
        Inside log_archive there are archive logs from  S0008121.LOG   to   S0008304.LOG
        I wont really require these logs, correct ?
    Please clear my confusions...

    You should not delete logs from log_dir because there online Redo logs and if you delete then there will be problem in start of db.

  • Getting space back after archiving and installing

    hi i need help!!! guys after i archived and reinstall leopard. eveyting is fine only that i used to have only like 50 gigs of space used and now it says i have 75 gigs used ... Why is that ?? how can i get my space back and the previous system folder its only taking up like 6 gigs stiil where is ther 15 gigs? its like if installed leopard over leopard again please help! i Want to get my space backk

    Hi JM111;
    When you do an Archive & Install the procedure saves the old system for you in a folder called Previous System. It does this just in case something is missing so that you can recover it from the Previous System folder. Once you have tested the system and applications and are satisfied with it, you can delete the Previous System folder which will return some disk back.

  • Reset Mail & Address Book prefs back after Archive & Install

    Please let me know what files I need to move around to get back my old mail files & address book. Also some of my programs won't start. They say they are missing files. What do I do?

    Okay, here is the whole story with this:
    I left on vacation & came back 7 days later. As I booted & began to try to download my vacation pics from my camera, it seemed really slow, so I had to force shut down. When I tried to reboot, it doesn't get past the gray screen with the apple & progress indicator. It just spins & spins but goes nowhere. I have seen where people have posted that they came back after a couple hours & their computer was working. No luck here, I left it on all day while I was at a work, & it was still stalled at the same spot when I came home. Below are the things I have tried:
    1. DiskWarrior. (I can get it to boot from the CD using the C command on startup.) It ran through replacing the directory. Found a bunch of errors but fixed them. Shows the hard drive is fine. After rebooting & the computer still stalling, I tried DiskWarrior again but it showed nothing wrong.
    2. Tried zapping PRAM & NVRAM. No luck.
    3. Disk Utility. I ran disk utility. It found no disk errors. Tried again, still stalls.
    4. Tried holding down shift key to start in safe mode, but it does nothing at all.
    5. I did a search on Apple.com & found where it said to find the file BaseSystem.pkg & get it into /Library/Receipts. Replaed the file with the one from the Tiger install CD. Still stalls.
    6. Decided to just go do an Archive & Install to replace the old system, but it won't let me. Says I have a newer version & have to do a clean install. This would cause me to loose a bunch of important files that I haven't backed up lately (I know! I know! I'm bad!!!). Freaked a bit.... It would take me forever to burn cds of all my files...
    7. OS 9. So I thought I would try to startup in OS 9.2, & that works. So I am assuming that it is an issue with OS X Tiger.
    8. I also tried to boot up without anything plugged in but the keyboard & mouse. Still stalled.
    9. I also tried repairing the permissions using Disk Utility from the Tiger CD, but it gave me an error "No Valid Packages".
    10. Also, I also held down Command V & this is the jabberwacky that come up:

    Kept trying and trying & got it to let me verify/repair the permissions. Then I verify/repair the disk. Everything was fine. I was able to back up all my document files in OS9. But I still had them because the I did the archive & install. But the inbox for my mail, along with my address book (& some other stuff I am sure I will miss soon) I would like to get back to normal. Please let me know if this is possible.

  • Play back for Archived audio file

    First of all, forum users, please pardon my ignorance with Documentum...my first experience with this after many years in SAP.
    I don't see any posts or articles on this subject.  I'm attaching a WMA file to Documentum.  I need to be able to play that back, using the user's PC player, in this case Windows Media Player.  Has anyone seen documentation on how to call media player from frontend services and pass the audio file, or can you suggest the "best practice" for this?
    My PDFs display easily using ARCHIVOBJECT_DISPLAY, and I suppose I expected that FM to decide how to handle the file, but it seems to work only for PDFs, so far, for me.

    Found way to do...
    read file back from documentum
    download to desktop
    call frontend services execute.

  • IPhoto backing up archiving and transfering

    I'm trying to find a method to backup my photos. I have burned about 30 CDs full of pictures but I don't have much time to get this done so I bought a flash drive to try to get more pictues on. I was also convinced that CDs are problematic for really long-term storage.
    The only way I could get them on the flash drive was to export, create a folder, and then complete the transfer...took a while. I did it with the 10 events left in iPhoto after my mad CD burns but hope there is an easier way than exporting. If I stick a CD in can I essentially copy/paste? With my PC I could cut/paste or copy/paste but don't seem to be able to cut/paste with my Mac; it only copies. I don't use a mouse, just the pad, if that makes a difference. Please be explicit and simple, I'm fairly new to my Mac.

    Yes you are a little confused, aren't you
    I did some searching in iPhoto Help and found out where the Pictures folder is located. I did not know that I have a "home folder". I thought I had a "Place"
    You're getting the word 'Place' from the SIdebar in the Finder Window. That's a shortcut to the actual location, not the location itself.
    I have now seen several references in iPhoto Help that one can have more than one "Library". I haven't found an explanation on why one would need more than one Library.
    Well if you can't think of a reason why you would want more than one, you obviously don't need one. That's an option for folks who do see such a need.
    The iPhoto Help instructions for "Moving your iPhoto Library folder to a new location" implies that one moves the Library folder out of the Pictures folder.
    Implies? I would have thought there was nothing "implied" at all. If you look up moving then it tells you how to move.
    Therefore, by moving it to an external drive, is it no longer on computer?
    Again, that's what "moving" means.
    I just want to save a copy of the iPhoto Library - not remove it from my computer.
    So you don't want to move your Library, you want to *back it up*. right?
    So, if you drag your iPhoto Library to the External it will make a copy of the Library on the External and leave the original Library in your Pictures Folder.
    It will do this because whenever you try and move something from one disk to another the Operating System copies the material to the new disk - a protection against dataloss.
    Regards
    TD

  • Why backing up archive logs? (and more...)

    Hi all,
    If I schedule a weekly backup every Saturday:
    BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;
    1- Does the command backup all the archivelogs generated during the week (and what for as far as I have the full backup) or only the archivelogs generated during the backup execution time?
    2- If I use a daily incremental backup with a weekly merge strategy , does the weekly archivelogs needed (or only one day) in case of recovery?
    3- The incremental Merge operation only uses the incremental backupset and the previous full backup to merge into datafile copies. No archivelogs are used to do this merge operation?
    4- Does the following strategy meaningfull regarding the archivelogs (incremental and merge backup every day)?
    RUN {
    BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 1 FOR RECOVER OF COPY WITH TAG 'INCR' DATABASE;
    RECOVER COPY OF DATABASE WITH TAG 'INCR';
    DELETE NOPROMPT OBSOLETE;
    BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL DELETE INPUT;
    Thanks,
    Vince

    BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;
    1- Does the command backup all the archivelogs generated during the week (and what for as far as I have the full backup) or only the archivelogs generated during the backup execution time?
    The above command will first generate a log switch then backup the archivelogs which have not been backed up so far then backup the database (full) and then switch the log file again and backup the remainining archivelogs.
    2- If I use a daily incremental backup with a weekly merge strategy , does the weekly archivelogs needed (or only one day) in case of recovery?
    RMAN always take incremental over archivelogs so if the incremental backup is available then archivelogs are not required BUT let say all the incrementals are taken as 2 am and you want to recover the database upto 4pm so next day incremental wont work then RMAN will use all incrementals upto the day of failure and then use the archivelogs for remaining recovery. In short you should decide the recovery window of your database means how far back you wanna go in case of incomplete recovery and you MUST keep all the archivelogs for that period of time.
    3- The incremental Merge operation only uses the incremental backupset and the previous full backup to merge into datafile copies. No archivelogs are used to do this merge operation?
    I hope answer number 2 will help here too.
    4- Does the following strategy meaningfull regarding the archivelogs (incremental and merge backup every day)?
    RUN {
    BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 1 FOR RECOVER OF COPY WITH TAG 'INCR' DATABASE;
    RECOVER COPY OF DATABASE WITH TAG 'INCR';
    DELETE NOPROMPT OBSOLETE;
    BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL DELETE INPUT;
    If this is the only backups you are having so it means your recovery window is 1 day because your backup copies are a day older than your current database and you can't use these copies to restore more than a day back. BUT you still want to backup archivelogs for last day so that in case of failure you can use restore upto a specific time and you dont want the archilogs more than a day older, those are useless because there is no prior backup available where you can apply those.

  • How to restore my data from the blackberry protect back up archive

    Hi, my phone recently crashed, so I reloaded my OS & tried restoring my data from the blackberry protect app but noticed I could only restore from my last backup. I'd like to restore from another backup point in my archive & not my last. How do I go about it?

    Only backups which are displayed can be restored to your phone. If you don't see any older ones, something might have gone wrong with the backups being loaded to the site. Perhaps you have an older backup done with BlackBerry Desktop Software which you could reload?
    Cheers.

  • Backing up/archiving projects and events in FCP X

    I have been using FCP Studio since 2003 and have a great workflow and back up procedure but with FCP X I have to find new ways to do things.
    Situation: My client will have me shoot many people asking the same questions. I love FCP X because metadata and keywords are much more powerful than logging was in FCP 7. So in FCP X I end up with an event and 12-14 projects. The client often will come back with changes many months later so I need to be prepared to modify an existing project or make a new one from the footage in the event that was never used in a previous projects.
    Back Up: So I duplicated the event to a external drive because I need everything ready to go but need to free up space. Very easy.
    Now the projects need to be duplicated to the external drive and this is where I am struggling.  I need back up each individual project because I can not select multible projects, which so different than FCP 7 where you could just send the project (which contained multilbe timelines) out as a ****.fcp file and put it with your original footage. The FCP X projects are duplicated projects only and it works just great but now only do I have to duplicate each project individually and they are not in nice folders. They are seperated folders by events and projects.
    Not complaining, just reaching out to see if anyone has more knowledge than I do or has worked out a better solution.

    Awesome. Thanks dredcomm. That will save tons of time.
    I have already been doing that inside of FCP X but it should also be noted that FCP X does not let you duplicate a project folder.
    Now I will just use the finder to copy the appropriate folder to an external drive.
