Backing Up Catalogs

When i attempt to back up my catalog to an external hard drive, I get to 64% backed up and then elements becomes unresponsive. This happens each and every time I attempt a backup. I am running windows 7 and photoshop elements 11. Please Help.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 Backing up Catalog

When I go into the Organizer, hit File Back Up Catalog to CD/DVD or Hard Drive my stsyem goes into a loop. How can i fix that?

You mean your catalog folder's size is 17.9GB? How many image/video/audio/project files are there in your catalog?
Can you please check if some files in your catalog are locked by some other application or are read-only?? If yes, they will not be picked up for backup and hence the hang.
Please turn off all background processes like people recognition, auto analysis and visual search indexing from Edit >> Preferences >> Media Analysis. Close Organizer and kill the following exes if running, from the Task Manager-
    elementsautoanalyzer.exe
    photoshopserver.exe
    dynamiclinkmanger.exe
    adobephotoshopfileagent.exe
    any sync related exe
Now relaunch Organizer and try taking backup.

How to fix Lightroom 5.6 from crashing when backing up catalog database (external AND local backup) - Mac 10.9.5
It starts to cue and within 3-4 seconds, the program just crashes hard. As stated, I tried it on local hard drive and external. Same result...
In the destination backup folder, it will copy over one folder, no images.
    Thanks ahead of time.

  • Backing up catalog from inside of lightroom extremely slow (30 min)

I have a catalog that is just under 5gb, if I navigate to the folder where it is stored and copy paste it onto my backup drive it copies in under 2 min. However, if I chose to backup my catalog on exit from inside lightroom it takes over 30 minutes (not counting testing etc). Obviously I can backup my catalog manually, but it would be nice if the built in backup feature worked like it's supposed to.
    I'm running win 7 64
lightroom 64 same probelm in 4.3 and 4.4
the catalog and lightroom are stored on a ssd drive
backing up to a NAS ( my typical transfer speeds are 60-80 MB/s)
    Thanks for any thoughts
    -Dan

I tried to the local ssd with only a small improvement. Like I said, if I navigate to the catalog manually and copy and paste it to the NAS it takes under 2 minutes... (80+ MB/s), but done through lightroom it just crawls.  Lightroom either has a bug, or it's doing something much more than just copying the catalog to the selected directory. I've tried it with and with out check and optimize.

A 5 GB Lr catalog is a hefty catalog. But 30 min seems a bit long even for that. I suspect that the NAS drive or its connection speed are slowing things down.Try this: Create a catalog backup from within Lr to an internal drive to check whether that will speed up the process.

  • Backed Up Catalog - Where are my Photos?

    Hi,
I back up my Lightroom 5 catalog in several ways.  I'm on a Mac and keep my catalog on one external drive while backing up to two other external drives.  One of my backup methods is to simply drag and drop the Lightroom 5 Catalog folder to another external drive.  This seems to bring everything in that folder, including the .lrcat file and all image files, with it.
However, if I open Lightroom from the backup drive by clicking on the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file there, and the drive holding my original catalog is off, the thumbnails that appear for most of my images in grid view are empty.  Most of the metadata are there, but the File Size item reads "File not found".  This is true even for those images that show up in their thumbnails.  On the other hand, if the drive holding my original catalog is on, all the thumbnails have images and the metadata no longer say "File not found".
I'm assuming this is some sort of referencing issue, with Lightroom looking for the original image files even though I'm opening it from the backup drive and the backup drive contains its own copies of the image files.
Bottom line is that I'm not sure now that copying my entire Lightroom 5 Catalog folder by dragging and dropping to another drive is a good backup procedure.  (I also use Time Machine to back up everything to another external drive.)  If I lose my main drive that contains my original catalog, will I be able to get my backup to look for the image files on the backup drive?  If so, how would I do that?
    Thanks for all responses.

When referring to the "catalog" in Lightroom, we are usually talking about the Lightroom catalog which is a database. It keeps track of where the images are located on your computer as well as any adjustments that are made to those images. In my opinion, it is a good idea to always allow your backup Lightroom catalog files point to the original images that you are working on using Lightroom. Otherwise, you can have several different versions of the same image. The idea of the image backup is to have something to fall back on in case of a disk or computer crash.
If you really want to redirect Lightroom to the backup images then it would be a good idea if all of your images were in a folder structure that puts all of your image folders within one master image folder. Then, in the backup catalog, you could right click on that master folder and choose the option to "update folder location" and you would be able to point Lightroom to the backup files. By doing this on the master image folder, it will update the location for all subfolders and images. But as I indicated, I think it's a better idea to leave the backup Lightroom catalogs pointing to the images in their original location. Otherwise, if it becomes necessary for you to use a backup catalog because of catalog corruption, the backup catalog will be pointing to the backup images which might not have all the adjustments.
A couple of examples might help explain a little better. Let's assume first that you encounter a corrupted catalog. All that's necessary is for you to replace that corrupted catalog with your most recent backup. If the catalog is still pointing to the original images then you can simply resume your work. Of course you will have lost any changes that were made since that backup was created. So let that be an indication of how often you decide you want to backup your catalog.
Now let's say that your catalog is okay, but your images are on a hard drive that crashes. Then all you have to do is point the catalog to the backup images and all of the adjustments in the catalog will be applied and work can continue uninterrupted. You might want to copy those backup images to another new working hard drive. If the hard drive has the same name or drive letter as it did previously you will just continue working. If to drive letter changes all you will have to do is update the folder location. All of the adjustments will still be in place and work continues.

  • Supplier not passed back from Catalog to Shopping Basket

    Hi,
We're implementing SRM 7.0 and have an issue where the supplier/business partner is not being picked up from the catalog, though all the items details are being passed back successfully. Business partner appears to be configured correctly. I've activated BADI BBP_CATALOG_TRANSFER and have had a look at the parameters CATALOG_CONTENT (item details) and ET_SC_PARTNER (business partner).
The data contained in ET_SC_PARTNER contains the business partner, from what I can see (18600), but I still get a 'Cannot determine supplier error in the actual basket after I select an item from the catalog. The fields in ET_SC_PARTNER contain the following:
    NEW_ITEM-CLIENT =
    NEW_ITEM-PARTNER_GUID = E022FA1F9B39EEF18EC6000C299460FE
    NEW_ITEM-P_GUID = E022FA1F9B39EDF18EC6000C299460FE

00001 I BBPWS Standard category of user was used 01000
The parameters in the BADI are as follows. Should I be pushing the business partner into a different field/structure?
    IS_ADMIN_DATA
    CATALOG_CONTENT
    ENRICHED_ITEM_DATA
    ENRICHED_ACCT_DATA
    ENRICHED_ITEM_LONGTEXT
    CATALOG_CONTENT_ERRORS

    ET_SC_ACCOUNTING
    ET_SC_PARTNER
    ET_SC_ORGDATA
    ET_SC_LONGTEXT
    ET_SC_MESSAGES
Also, I had previously been monitoring CATALOG_CONTENT, and the VENDOR field in there was blank. However, even when I hard-coded the vendor field to contain the correct vendor, I still got the 'No Source of Supply found for item' message.
    Example
    NEW_ITEM-LINE = 00001
NEW_ITEM-DESCRIPTION = Ledu Magnifier Lamp, Black, 40" Reach
    NEW_ITEM-QUANTITY = 1
    NEW_ITEM-UNIT = EA
    NEW_ITEM-PRICE =                                128.5800
    NEW_ITEM-PRICEUNIT =
    NEW_ITEM-CURRENCY = USD
    NEW_ITEM-MATNR =
    NEW_ITEM-LEADTIME =
    NEW_ITEM-VENDOR = 0000018600
    NEW_ITEM-VENDORMAT = LEDL745BK
    NEW_ITEM-MANUFACTMAT =

    Hi Jeffrey.
It looks like a portal navigation issue.
Can you search the list of notes by term "portal navigation" under the component SAP-CAT-MDM through service market place.

  • Trouble backing up catalogs

Every time I back up on an external hard drive, Lightroom cannot find my catalog. I spend lots of time searching that I'd rather spend editing photos.

I have a preset for backing up on an external hard drive once a day when I leave Lightroom. For some reason, the catalog is backed up on my hard drive in the Lightroom folder (and not onto my external hard drive) so I copy it over to my external hard drive. It does not back up my photos, just my catalog, so I copy my Lightroom Pictures folder onto the external hard drive too, which takes awhile. Then, without fail, the next time I open Lightroom it cannot find my catalog. I'm sure I must be doing something wrong. I've watched several of the catalog videos but can't figure this out. Thanks

  • Backing up catalogs upon start

I just wanted to know if there was anyway to have lightroom 4 backup catalogs upon launching the program instead of upon exiting? I know in previous verisons you were able to do this....
    Thanks for the help!

No there isn't a possibility to backup the catalog upon opening Lr 4.4.
The reason is in my opinion twofold
    a) backing up a catalog with 1000s of images takes at least a few minutes. That means you have to wait until the backup finishes before you can do anything in Lr. But by backing up on exit you can do something else while the backup is running.
    b) and more important perhaps: your current session would not be included in the backup.

  • Back Up Catalog error

We keep getting this error message when trying to back up the catalog, any thoughts as how to fix this?

    Ok - cracked it.
Changing user's permission on the hard drive of the computer didn't help.
So I looked at user rights on the back up drive (is that what you meant anyway?) and there were none shown - so I changed them to full rights and back up went ok.
So ..... if you meant to check user rights on the back up drive, and I have now changed user rights for all users on the computer hard drive (drive C) then have I created problems for myself (there seemed to be a lot of scary warnings about reducing security etc).
In practice this is a home computer only used by me and my wife (unless a technician has to repair it etc and they no doubt have the knowledge to do naughty things if they want) so unless the user right changes cause operational problems there won't be any security etc issues (will there??)

  • Backing up catalog

When I went to back up a catalog, it appears that the backup included the photos in the catalog.
Is there a way to just backup the catalog without making additional copies of my photos?

    Yes.
Find the catalog folder. Its location is shown in the menu Hel/System information.
Just copy the whole folder where you want.
Keep in mind that if you have to restore from a backup of your picture files made by an external tool, the catalog folder copy still stores the links to the location of the files ine original drive. If you have to restore on another drive, you'll have to reconnect all files, which is not easy. The integrated backup/restore method is recommended if you want to migrate to another drive.

  • Problem with backing up catalog in Elements Organizer 12 - help please

I am trying to do a full backup of my catalog in Organizer 12 (this is the first time have tried backup) and it is coming up with 0 bytes of data and gets error message 'Error encountered while writing files'.   I have 1000+ files that I have imported to the organizer (with many 1000's to go), and I have used the Organizer to move photos/video around -- so I would think they are in the catalog. (I was trying to put the backup on the C drive -- is that causing any problem).
Elements12 is the first installation on this computer (using Windows 8.1). I have used previous versions on another computer (v3) and was able to handle everything on DVD's.
Also, is there any way to backup just the catalog (location of files, tags, metadata, comments, stars, and thumbnail etc), and not the full files?  I will have over a terabyte for sure.  Otherwise I will have to get another external hard drive to backup the catalog to. But I already backup all the photo/video files to an external hard drive.
I want to get all ironed out before I started extensive organizing and tagging, etc.  I MUST be able to get a usable backup catalogue before I can spend the time I plan.
    Thanks for any help;-)

The first stage of the backup process tells you what is the size needed for the backup: how much space do you need ?
(I was trying to put the backup on the C drive -- is that causing any problem).
It's not recommended for safety and speed reasons, but that's not a reason in itself for your problem. The general rule is that you must store the backup on a separate folder; you must have enough free space (twice the size of the above calculation is recommended).
Also, is there any way to backup just the catalog (location of files, tags, metadata, comments, stars, and thumbnail etc), and not the full files?  I will have over a terabyte for sure.
Yes, simply look for the locataion of your catalog in the Help menu, System Information, and copy the whole folder somewhere. Simply look at the total size of that folder.
I will have over a terabyte for sure.
Otherwise I will have to get another external hard drive to backup the catalog to. But I already backup all the photo/video files to an external hard drive.
If you already have a backup from an external software, be sure to have also a copy of your catalog, as mentionned above. But restoring to another computer or drive won't be easy and you'll have to 'reconnect' all your files. That's why the integrated backup system is highly recommended. I'd recomment using another external drive for that purpose.

I can see a preview of the photos, but I cannot access or edit them.  They say "the folder cannot be located" and "the photo is missing".  I have gone through multiple Adobe tutorials to try and recover them to no avail.  Any tips?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.
The solution to reconnecting the folders is given here: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • LR5 after crashing doesn't import all folders from backed up catalog

    Hello,
yesterday my LR crashed and not surer why. Just came to my mac and for some reason LR CC quit itself and when I press to launch it it asked me to import files from the catalogue as if you would start fresh install.
I used last Lightroom backup file, but for some reason it imports all photos apart of one HD and that one has most recent photos on it. Not sure why it is not including that HD. I tried to import images manually, via import photos dialog. Works fine apart that I have lost all edits on them. It just imports them as fresh photos without previews. There are quiet few weddings on it and I really don't want to reedit all this.
When I tried to import photos from different catalogue, nothing happens, it doesn't allow me to add those photos from that one HD. Everything is just greyed out and I can't do any selections.
How to get my edits back? Was thinking to do a clean install and try again my last backed up lrcat file. Just afraid that I would loose all my edits.
    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Armands

+I didn't rename the movie file inside of the iPhoto Library for fear of corrupting the library structure.+
Good thinking! The only way to change the filename in iPhoto is to export the movie file, import it back in, copy over comments, keywords from the old to the new movie, and then delete the old movie.

  • File Function in Photoshop Elements Organizer - Backing Up Catalog

I want to backup my catalog to an external hard drive. I understand I need to go to click on the File button at the top of the screen to start the process.  But, my Organizer does not have the File button (or any of the other buttons) at the top  of the screen.  How do I restore these buttons?
    Thanks!

The screen fonts are system-wide, so that setting will affect all your apps.  The fault is entirely Adobe's -- they don't write their PSE code to follow the Windows guidelines which require apps to work at larger font sizes.

  • When backing up catalog it loops after about 70%-PS7

Hi I am trying to do by first backup of the catalog of about 3000 files. To external drive Always, after about 70% it ends up in a loop with "Program not responding" shown in Task manager. I have     checked that the catalog does not need repairing    its Ok:     there is lot of space      170 Gb :    it doesn't need defragging ;    run Chkdsk on disc and its ok. It starts to go slow at about 50% and gradualy gets slower The folder that has been saved looks Ok with about 2000 files in. I then tried to do an incremental backup on that folder , but it woudln't do it. I get no error messages of any sort and the system is all Ok for all others apps Cpu load when loops is low, with PS at about 5% and mostly the system is idlle Any ideas please Thanks Chris

Hi I am afraid I am still not getting anywhere. Thanks for your patience. Firstly on checking my log book, I didn't get this catalog from my previous PS version. I started again from Explorer folders. So I misled you. Sorry. Though I do have a previous version with some of the same photos , and many many more in its catalog.I have been gradually moving across , but from Explorer as I didn't want them all moved across. The nearest path to what you suggested on my XP machine is below. I cannot find Program Data, only Program files: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog\projects And this folder is empty. I am still hunting. Chris
