Backing up computer before upgrading OSx

should you backup your computer before upgrading and installing software (from OSx 10.5.8 to 10.6 snow leopard)

Yes. In fact you should always maintain current backups in case of a disaster. I recommend in this case you make a basic clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
  5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.

What is the best way to backup my computer before upgrading from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6? I just purchased a WD portable external hard drive.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/index.html or SuperDuper.  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  Both make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive.

Upgrading the OS does not remove your apps and purchases.

  • I cannot get my purchased apps back on my iPad 2 after transferring them to my computer before upgrading to iOS 7

I transferred my  purchased apps from my iPad 2 to my iMac (OS 10.7.5 and iTunes 11.1) after authorizing iMac. I upgraded my iPad to iO@ 7. Now I can't get those apps from my computer to my iPad. I can open them by going to the apps store, searching for them and clicking "open." However, I really want to have them on my iPad. Any advice?
    Thanks!

What happens when you try to sync the apps to the iPad? Any error messages, and if so what do they say?
I can open them by going to the apps store, searching for them and clicking "open."
I'm not clear on what you mean by this. If you mean that you're finding the apps in the App Store app on your iPad and there's an "open" button rather than a "cloud" icon, then the apps are already on your iPad. Apps can't be "streamed" from the iTunes Store; they can only run if they've been downloaded.

  • Backing up photos before upgrade

I got a "you must upgrade your photo library to a new version of iPhoto and can't go back ever" message today.
I would like to backup all my photos on dvds before I do this.
I did a ".jpg" search and can see the photos.
    But, I can't choose them.
If I try and copy them, I can apparently only copy 10 at at time. Really? 10,000 photos?
So, any help would be appreciated.
I read where there can be problem with IPhoto 11, which I'm assuming this is... but I don't know since I can't see what version it is prior to upgrading. I'm running 10.6.8 and I had, I believe, iPhoto 9 on here.
So, again. How do I back up the photos from the hard drive separately before proceeding. I'm using an EHD with Time Machine, brand new, with a brand new HD on my MacBookPro (the first died, and it was my first HD failure), but I can't run the Western Digital 24/7. I have to disconnect and reconnect each day or it fails occasionally. The Logic board was also updated.
I assume my photos have been backed up on that HD but I just want to make sure I can access the 8 years of photos in another way if I have to. I can also attach the MacBookPro to an old G4 and back up but I'd like to burn the DVDs. I figure it will take awhile and two of them, so I'd probably set for overnight.
    Thanks in advance. Gary

If you want to back up just the photos to DVD or other optical disk:
File -> Export and export them to a Folder on the Desktop. Burn that with the Finder's Burn command. Result: a disk with a folder of all your images.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
To back up a Library - that is Photos, deatbases, albums slideshows, books etc -
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • 2 Back up Questions Before Upgrading - Please

    Before going to 10.4.8 -
I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions. Each partition has a Disc Utility bootable clone of one of my Macs (all G4's). Each clone is about 6 weeks old and I'd like to make them current (and most certainly bootable) before updating to 10.4.8, just in case.
    So, here's my 2 questions:
    1. Do I erase each partition before doing the new clone, OR do I simply click on Restore in Disc Utility, put the Source and Desitination volumes in the correct panes and then eecute the Restore command letting Disc Utility write over the existing clones, OR do I click on Restore and put the Source and Desitination volumes in the correct panes and go letting it write over the existing clones but check the "Erase Destination" box first?
    2. In case I have issues with 10.4.8 that I can't troubleshoot, and I need to go back, do I do a clean install of 10.4 and then clone back, or what is the exact procedure to getting a Mac back to its prior state with all prefernces and data and so forth the same as before (and of course back to an earlier OS) from a clone? I'd really like to get some detailed instructions on how to do this so I can print them out ahead of time.
    Thanks in advance, and Cheers!
iMac CDRW Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi
There have been problems with individual files in the cloning process on some Macs. Once this occurs you will find that all cloning utilities choke on the same file. Retrospect will skip the file but others will just stop. If you see the FAQ on the SuperDuper! page you will see how you can exclude a folder from the clone, and avoid the problem. If you do not use the Dutch localisation of iTunes I would also try dragging the offending folder to the Desktop, launch iTunes and check that it is working properly, and if everything is ok delete the folder. Your clone should then go without problem.
I also see that you have multiple threads running about this problem, with different information on each thread. This is not helpful! If you have Retrospect then you are best off using that app to achieve what you want. It is by far the most sophisticated backup app, and only need be avoided by those who crave simplicity.
Edit: As an addendum to that, Retrospect, SuperDuper!, SilverKeeper and other cloning apps can update your clones very quickly (SuperDuper! typically takes 10 minutes to update my clone). Disk Utility on the other hand does not have this ability. You would need to do a fresh clone each time you use it, and that takes a great deal longer (depending on your Mac and data 1½-2 hours is normal.

  • Transferring ipod photos from ipod back to computer

Had to get new hard drive. Back ups were copromised. All 1100 photos from years are on ipod. Support says they cannot be transferred back to computer even thought music and videos transferred. Any ideas how i can save years worth of photos back to computer before i lose ipod or it crashes. PLEASE HELP. I have photos of family member who have passed. Cannot lose photos.

You can try a program such as [touchcopy|http://www.was-systems.com/touchcopy>, but be aware that any photos transferred to the ipod touch are reduced in size and resolution, so you will not get back the same quality as the originals. Probably a better bet is to take/send the drives to a [recovery company|http://www.drivesavers.com/plans/service-plans.html] who can retrieve the files even from a supposed dead drive. This will cost you, but if they're that important...

  • HT5167 Error after 10.7.4 upgrade..."computer's local hostname ........is already in use on this network.  The name has been changed to......  What to do now to get it back to status before 10.7.4 upgrade?

Error after 10.7.4 Lion Upgrade to iMac
Computer's local host name .......is already in use on this network.  the name has been changed to........
and it keeps adding up the number each time I wake the iMac.
What to do to get it back before upgrade error?

Ok worth repeating, hope this works.  Finally spoke to AppleCare Support and walked me thru following...restart computer holding down "command" and "option" keys at the same time with letters "P" and "R" when computer turns on.  This is what he called a PR restart, clears out discrepancies in memory (if that is what the error message actually is).  Then went to Systems Preferences/Network/Sharing and deleted the number that kept increasing every time MAC would wake up.
Even tho this was just done, I am hopeful that error pop-up won't happen again.  Fingers crossed!

  • BEFORE INSTALLING OSX Mavericks, do I have to create a back up of all the contents on my Mac book pro or i just have to install it and everything stays without getting deleted.

before installing osx mavericks, do i have to create a back up of all the stuff that i have on my mac book pro or can i just click install and everything stays without getting deleted.

Never Ever do anything with an operating System without backing up first.
While it is usual for a new OS to install with no loss of data, the time you do it without first backing up will most likely be the time that you wish you had backed up.
In all of the updates and upgrades Apple distributes there is a recommendation to backup your data before installing.
The easiest option is to get an external hdd if you do not already have one, plug it into the mac and follow the prompts to use the drive for Time Machine. Note that any data existing on the external hdd will be erased so use a new one or one that you are confident is ok to erase without a disaster ensuing.
Also ensure that System Preferences -> Energy Saver has been set so the Computer Sleep is Never so that the backup will not be interrupted if this is the first backup or it is a long time since the last backup was done.

Buy an external drive 320G or larger (much larger is preferable). I do not recommend you use TM for this, instead download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and make a clone of your drive. Once this is done you have 2 choices, you can download and install Lion on your internal drive just as you planned or download and install Lion to the external clone, the 2nd method allows you to test the Lion install before committing to it. If the clone with Lion is to your liking then just clone it back to the internal.

I currently have OSX 10.4.11 and need to upgrade my software. I do not have Time Machine yet. My processor is an intel Core 2 duo. Do I have to upgrade to snow leopard 10.6.8 before upgrading to Mavericks?

Assuming your computer has the minimum system requirements yes, upgrade to 10.6.8 and then open the Mac App Store and upgrade to Mavericks. You can only get SL 10.6.x from Apple's online store, it is $20. Prior to upgrading to 10.6.x get an external HD and use a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and make a bootable clone of  your system to safeguard all of your valuable data. In the event you have a problem the backup will be invaluable!!!!!
Considering your computer is at best a 2007 iMac I would STRONGLY recommend upgrading your RAM to 6GB, the maximum a 2007 machine can accommodate. You can buy this from either Crucial or OWC  (www.macsales.com).
Another option is due to the age of your computer is considering buying a newer machine.

  • Should I uninstall Firefox 3.6.6 before Upgrading to OSX 10.6?

I want absolutely no glitches when I upgrade my MacBookPro from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.3. I use Safari as my main browser and Firefox only when a website does not work well with Safari. Therefore, I thought it might be best to uninstall Firefox before I upgrade, because I can always re-install Firefox after I have upgraded. What do you think? I have AppZapper to use to uninstall Firefox since it will search out and collect all Preference lists, etc., that accompany Firefox, resulting in a complete and clean uninstall. Any thoughts? Thanks!

    Hello Gordon.
I don't know if you should uninstall Firefox before upgrading Mac OS X (I don't think so, in any case), but you may be interested in knowing how to back up your information, if you are afraid of loosing it in the upgrade:
