Backing up data on old MACBOOK and iPhone 3

Hi all,
What is the best way to help my friend back up her data?
I have a friend with an older white MacBook running I believe 10.5 and an older iPhone three or three GS
Currently the MacBook has only 10 gigs free
And her iPhone 3g has over 4000 pictures
As far as I know nothing has ever been backed up before! Yikes!
GOAL : back up all her MacBook and iPhone data
Question: what is the best course of action?
MY THINKING…
1 - get an external drive and back up the computer first using carbon copy cloner or superduper
2 - empty some space so that the MacBook has many more gigabytes to work with
3 - back up (SYNC) the iPhone to the MacBook - now that there are more gigabytes free
4 - now back up the MacBook second time with all the Data from the iPhone included
Q: Is that the best way to go?
ALSO…
As a short-term solution I was thinking if I could attach her old iPhone three to my MacBook Pro which is already synced to my iPhone five
Q: - if I connect her iPhone three using USB– Can I just use image capture out to grab all her photos for safety? With that in any way screw up her syncing connections to her MacBook later? What about My iPhone 5 after….. ex… what devices are connected it asks if you want to trust this computer? Can someone explain exactly what that means– And how it affects your main computer syncing later?

any help would be appreciated on this

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can I set up a Mac email account on my old Macbook and iPhone?

I have a Macbook 2.1 (2007 I think) running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with 2BG Ram, and an iPhone 4S. I would like to set up a Mac email account which will run and sync on both devices. Is this possible? I’d be grateful for any guidance.

Just to clarify, my understanding is that to use iCloud, I would need a Mac which can run Mountain Lion or higher. But my Macbook (as described above) is not capable of running Mountain Lion. Certainly the official Apple site says it's not.  I believe some people with similar spec Macbooks are successfully using Mountain Lion but I'd prefer not to try this if it slows my computer down. Unless someone persuades me it'll work fine, I'd prefer an email solution which I could use with Snow Leopard and the iPhone.
I have looked on the official Apple support site and elsewhere but I can't figure out whether it's possible to create some kind of Mac email account (@iCloud or @me?) which would work on my old Mac as well as on my iPhone 4S. I'd welcome any advice..

  • I just got a new iPhone and i set up iCloud on my girlfriend's account. To change it on settings it says delete account. Will this delete her all her data and back up data for iCloud on her iPhone and iPad?

I just got a new iPhone and i set up iCloud on my girlfriend's account. To change it on settings it says delete account. Will this delete her all her data and back up data for iCloud on her iPhone and iPad? Can i change it without deleting it? Please help.

Delete the account on your phone. This will not delete any data on her phone or iPad, or data stored in iCloud.

I don't know if this is a similar problem but I wrote 2 notes yesterday on my iphone. I opened my mail to print them and they appeared as notes but wouldn't load. Then I looked at them on my iphone and I could see the notes but they quickly updated to blank with a time of the last edit the same time I tried opening them on my computer.
Yesterday I updated to 4.3.4  I don't know if somehow that affected them. Are they stored somewhere else. Can I get them back?

  • I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please!

I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please! Also, I still don't understand exactly what the benefits are. At the moment it seems a lot of hassle to change a system that's been working perfectly well and that I'm very happy with. I'm not at all sure whether the mac mini (1.66 GHz INtel Core Duo) can be brought up to the relevant spec to run ICloud.  Any thoughts?

There are two aspects to iCloud.  One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud.  The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
First to get an iCloud account:
If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration).  If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7).  Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html  You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address.  You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account.

  • HT201407 new iphone 5 and 4 year old macbook, and for some reason my computer says a later version of itunes is required to use iphone to sync.  updated most recent version possible and still can not sync to iphone.

new iphone 5 and 4 year old macbook, and for some reason my computer says a later version of iTunes is required.  So, i went to ITunes and found i have the latest version availble at this time.  iTunes say phone can not be synced because it requires a version of 10.7 or greater?

iPhone 5 requires OS X 10.6.8 & iTunes 10.7 or greater. I suspect you're running Leopard, 10.5.8, correct? If so, you will first have to update your OS, then iTunes in order to sync your phone.

  • I have one of the old macbooks and wish to hook it up to my tv. do i need a mini dvi to hdmi adapter plus a 3 rca phono lead with a jack for the sound. please help as im useless at this stuff. cheers

i have one of the old macbooks and wish to hook it up to my tv. do i need a mini dvi to hdmi adapter plus a 3 rca phono lead with a jack for the sound. please help as im useless at this stuff. cheers

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Hi, there is any possibility to block a stolen macbook and iphone?

hi, thee is any possibility to block a stolen macbook and iphone in order to not be able to be used anymore?

These won't protect your data or recover the item but they are dog-in-the-manger possibilities:
Interesting articles on blocking future use of stolen phones (but doesn't block access of existing data stored on phone):

  • Why is photostream not working together with my macbook and iphone?

Photostream is not working togther with my macbook and iphone. How can I sync it?

    Has it ever worked?
If you recently turned on photo stream on the mac and iphone, then (on the iphone) only new photos are included in photo stream, old ones are not.
But syncing to your mac (if the photos originate from the iphone) is critical.  That's how you store photos (they can easily disappear on the iphone due to many "issues" that can occur, and relying on an icloud backup is not safe - to many users have lost some/all their photos when doing a restore.
So be sure to begin by doing a sync to the mac using itunes/iphoto with a USB cable.

  • Syncing outgoing email on MacBook and iphone. Read loads of posts but still can't resolve...

Ploughed my way through loads of previous posts but have yet to find a solution.
It's that age old problem: I want to sync email on MacBook and iPhone so that changes on either device are reflected on the other.
Everything other than mail is synced succesfully via iTunes so no problem there. My email server is oneandone and accounts on both devices are IMAP. Incoming mail shows on both accounts but outgoing mail is only shown on the device the action was performed on.
Any suggestions on how to resolve? Am running 10.6 with a MacBook Pro and iPhone 4S.
    Thanks
    Nick

I have never found a solution (and I have looked). As I recall, if you uncheck "store sent mail on server" all the mail looks like it is sent from me.
I send a little mail from my iPad, but most of it is from my MacBook Pro.
I realize this has not resolved the issue, but I thought it would, at least, indicate that you are not alone.

  • I have iCloud on my iMac, macbook and iPhone.  However, when I update my contacts on one, it does not update on any of the other devices.  The calendar seems to be working.  Any suggestions?

I have iCloud on my iMac, macbook and iPhone.  However, when I update my contacts on one, it does not update on any of the other devices.  The calendar seems to be working.  Any suggestions?

On the iMac and MacBook open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Contacts, then reselect it then restart the Macs.
On the iPhone tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Contacts off then back on then restart the iPhone.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

according to the tech specs' required to use iClode it seems that Apple is ignoring it's promisses to their valued costumers since 2001..I have to go to an Apple store and buy a new MacBook and iPhone..mm yeah right we are all swimming in cash. On June Apple had promissed it's old valued costumers that they can continue to access their Mac mail accounts via a browser. But hey ! why keep promisses. Now you need to purchase all the latest gadgets to use y'r Mac mail-iCloud. MOVING TO GMAIL !

If you had a MobileMe account, and provided you migrated it to iCloud before 1 August, you can access your email at http://icloud.com on any modern browser. 10.7.2 minimum and iOS5 or 6 are required for the devices to use iCloud syncing and other facilities.
If you have Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard you can set Mail up manually to access the email on an existing iCloud account:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger
