Backing-up Dreamweaver's control of a site.

Hi Folks
I learned early on how to backup site definitions, but is there anything else I have to manually backup to ensure that Dreamweaver CS4 will always retain its awareness of all the linked templates and library items etc. that it controls.
If I had to reinstall Dreamweaver, or restore my operating system from an image that was made weeks or months ago, would Dreamweaver still be able to work its magic and correctly populate updates to all the connected pages? Where does it keep this information? Is it all just in the webpage itself or is there a file somewhere. A file that could be recovered from a wrecked and unbootable OS?
Cheers.
Brian

Back again
I want to restart this thread because after restoring my system to an earlier time I have found not everything survives. It’s mainly personal configuration settings of Dreamweaver that don’t carry over so I figure there must be a setting somewhere to save and transfer such stuff.
The main thing is that the status of cloaked items are not there, which is not good, but I have discovered that they are saved in the Site Definitions backup, so as long as I do a definitions backup just before restoring my system I can re-apply that to the older Dreamweaver, however it requires deleting the current definitions for the site or the new import is seen as a new site and renamed.
Personally saved code snippets are also not there, but I’ve found they are saved in an Adobe folder in the user document folders and copying over this entire folder does the trick for snippets and a few other things like workspaces and personal dictionary. I’ve yet to really use my restored system so no doubt there’s much more to be discovered.
For WinXP that folder path is - C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4
So before I spend more time on this does anyone know the recommended way or built-in backup setting to transfer all data to a restored system? It’s such an obvious required function that it’s probably staring me right in the face, but damned if I can see it. If almost everything personal is in that Adobe folder with no other connections to the registry or the like, then that will do nicely for most things as it could even be recovered from an unbootable operating system. The cloaked items saved in site definitions requires a bootable system to make the backup, so it would be good to know where they are saved. I even tried swapping over the entire Dreamweaver Program Files Folder but this did not do it.

Brian

    What is the operating system?
In Windows Vista and Windows 7 it is almost identical.

  • Using Dreamweaver to edit a Joomla site

Can someone explain how to set up a Joomla site in DW so that it will display in Design Mode.
I am using MAMP as a testing server and have opened a Joomla site in DW, but it will not display in Design mode. When I use Preview (selecting external browsers) the site works fine.
BTW, I have created another small (one page) php/mySQL site that works in DW using the same MAMP testing server setup, but it is one I started in DW from the start.
Also, is there any current information on how to use DW to create your own Joomla Template?
Thanks for any guidance. I am using DW CS4, Mac OSX 10.6, Current MAMP config, Joomla 1.5.15.

    Gerry --
Joomla's template index.php file pulls in information from all over Joomla to display it. That includes modules, components, plugins, and information from the template itself. That's why there's usually 150 files that contribute to a single page.
Having said that, your method for identifying where to make the change in Dreamweaver may or may not work out -- it's definitely worth a try, but my concern is that DW won't accurately show where the change needs to be made due to the number of files involved. In any case, you will definitely want to read up on the template/layout override process, so you can change the interface without it being overwritten in the next Joomla or extension release. That's described in the Joomla documentation here: http://docs.joomla.org/Layout_Overrides_in_Joomla_1.6
Note that most documentation is written for Joomla 1.6, but you will find it works fine with Joomla 1.7. Joomla 2.5 will be released in January, so be aware that's coming as well (and another reason to be sure you future-proof your site by overriding files correctly).
My videos will help show you how to configure DW/Joomla to work together, and it will walk you through the process of doing a template override and a layout override. However, you may find you'll want to hire an engineer to move the layout around, after which you could tweak it with CSS to make it look pretty. The code is pretty complex, and depending on your background and skills, you could find it intimidating.
Before you ever start this type of work on your site, be very, very sure you have a backup -- it's likely you will needed. A better approach is to make a copy of the site and work on the copy. When you have finished, you can transfer the relevant files you've changed. Remember to back up the files that make up the site as well as the database -- many old DW designers remember to back up files, but all of the site's data is in the database. Akeeba Backup is an excellent, free extension, and it will allow you to make this backup quickly and easily: www.akeebabackup.com

  • How do I include a dreamweaver font into a Web site?

    Hello,
I have chosen the font-family 'Stencil' within Dreamweaver whilst building a Web site.
How can I ensure that this font-family is uploaded to the actual Web site so that the text which I want to display in that font is available to all browsers out there?    From forums I have read it looks like it will do it anyways but it does not seem to be working.  Help!
    Thank you!
    Michael

    Hi Ken,
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your reply!
To be honest, I found those stencil fonts earlier, but thank you for pointing them out to me as I only just discovered them  :-)
In this particular instance I need a bit of a variation on this stencil font.   I have taken a screen shot of the site CodeBlueRecruitment.com.au as I see it on my computer, so was hoping to get that version of stencil out of Dreamweaver CS5.5 and onto the live site so that it can be accessed via everyone as you are right it wouldn't be on many visitor's devices I would agree.
I would be thrilled with any advice on that one :-)   I have been reading a lot of forums but can't seem to hit the nail on the head.
    Thanks again.
    Best regards,
    Michael

    Hello Tina,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you would like to download your songs from iTunes Match.  You can do this by turning iTunes Match back on and clicking the cloud icon with the downward facing arrow next to the songs that you would like to download to your computer:
    Available for Download
This icon appears when a song is available in iCloud and hasn't been downloaded to your local library.

No, this is not what iTunes Match does. When you enable the service it leaves all the original files right where they are and mirrors your library in the cloud by either matching tracks to tracks available on the iTune Store or uploading tracks to the cloud. The service does not delete files from your HDD.
I am unsure what you mean by "library icon" or "itunes library file" but if you mean the iTunes Library.itl file the size of that file is irrelevant.
Before you enabled the iTunes Match service approximately how many songs were in your iTunes library and where were they stored? On the internal HDD of the computer, or on an external? Also, do you have backups?

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

Parental Controls can be used to set time limits, to allow the computer to be used only within specific hours of the day, and to block certain Web sites (or to allow only certain Web sites). However, they can be applied to a Standard account only, not to an admin account.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 & Controlling Flash Content

I have been browsing the forums for this similar problem, and
I've seen some that are close. Here's the deal:
    In DW8:
I created an HTML file that had several smal (4kb) flash
movies. I assigned the "Control Shockwave/Flash" behavior via the
Behavior menu to play the movie on mouseover. This worked fine.
I upgraded to CS3 and now this functionality is no longer
working. When I assign the function, the swf files just sit there
without any action whatsoever. Locally, the files are not working.
I uploaded to our staging server (along with the Scripts folder)
and the flash isn't even showing up at all.
My gut (although I have limited experience with flash &
java) is telling me that there is a js conflict going on with CS3.
So, is there an update or patch that may help this situation?
If anyone else has encountered this problem too, please reply
back and maybe we can figure this out.
    Thanks All
    Keith

Got the code cleaned up and the flash files are showing on
the remote, but still there is no control via the DW
    java/behaviors.

  • Dreamweaver Slow To Open New Site

    Hi Guys
I have recently installed DW CS3 and everything appears to
work fine except for when I either create a New Site or try to
Manage a Site. When I choose these options it takes over 30 seconds
to bring up the New Site or Manage Site Box.
I checked DW 8 that I still had on my system and that too had
slowed drastically on the Create New Site command. I uninstalled DW
8 in case that was causing the slowdown but made no difference.
I have trashed the Configuration folder in the My
Docs/Dreamweaver 9 folder location but that made no difference.
Has anyone got any idea what could be causing this?
    Thanks
    David Roberts

I did try the safe mode and didn't work. I did make iexplorer my default and then back again to foxfire and it somewhat worked. It was work not bad (but not as good as before) until I rebooted and it seemed the more I used it the better it became. Go figure :)
Well I just did another firefox update to 4 and it works perfect and maybe even better than before. (or I got use to how slow it was :) )
Thank You for you quick reply and I'm very happy for the new update... So far so good.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 crashes on new site

My Dreamweaver CS3, working under Vista, normally works fine
and I have successfully created new sites. Today, however, it
continued to crash when I tried to establish a new site based on
existing files a folder. Only after removing a large portion of the
files was it successful. Once created, once I moved the files back,
all worked well. Something is happening to the 'site scan'. I
suspect it is a file it does not like, but I would rather not have
to test them one by one. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Bring back GoLive-DreamWeaver Sucks

I have been using (wrestling with) DreamWeaver for several years now and I have to say it is the most un-intuitive program I have ever seen from Adobe. It is an absolutely horrible piece of software. Seems like it was made by Microsoft. It is nearly unusable. BRING BACK GoLive, please. Or make DreamWeaver intuitive and useable. I'll have to look for another web layout program.
BTW, I have been using Macs since the beginning in 1984 and have been designing web sites for close to 20 years, so it's not like I'm inexperienced or an amateur. I am actually an IT guy as well as a graphic designer, and have decades of experience beta-testing and using software (they should have had ME beta-test DW).

Goody! Wow, a genuine classic GoLive versus Dreamweaver debate! Golly, and here I am thinking we'd left GoLive behind us 6 or more years ago! This takes me back 8 years ago!
Anyway, problem with time is that it often makes the past look more beautiful than it actually was. At one time I taught both products on a weekly basis, and it was obvious at the time that Macromedia Dreamweaver was going to win out. DW was improving fast, and GL was lagging behind. Adobe management was struggling to get the web thing right (still is, in my opinion ;-) and decided on this grand idea to gobble up Macromedia.
(Well, we all know how THAT turned out: Fireworks development stopped, Freehand dead, Flash redirected to mobile (game) dev, Director marginalized, Authorware zombified, and Dreamweaver still trying to find its direction up till the moment I write this).
Well, perhaps I am being overly dramatic. Fireworks' existence was on the head block while at MM. Still, Macromedia had market leading products (animation, online/distance/multimedia learning/visual game development/etc)  that, for the most part, have been... "neutered", for lack of better words.
Anyway, back on track: as I recall, GoLive generated some absolutely horrific code, even ten-12 years ago. It was a good application for those who did not want to code too much, and the interface was quite okay. But the code! Oh, that dreadful code. It was marginally better than (dare I say?) FrontPage. Dreamweaver, however, killed GoLive in the coding departement, and was a much more flexible and open editor than GL. Most coders I knew rejoiced when GoLive got the axe. I joined them in this, because during my GL classes I had to say "good things" about an application where I knew in my heart it just did not compare to DW, and was, for the most part, outdated.
Truly nostalgic memories. People love to polarize themselves into "us" against "them". (Replace either one with words like "Mac", "PC", Science", "Religion", "subscription model", "ownership", "spectrum", "C64", "you don't know code", "I know code", and so on. ;-P
As a solution to quick non-coding method to build websites: why not create a library of re-usable code snippets, and quickly mesh things together? Especially with Foundation or Bootstrap this can work fast and efficient. Or use something like this to quickly create a base to work with:
