Backing up entire computer hard disk

Can anyone tell me how to back up my entire computer? I want to back up the entire contents so that in the event of hard disk damage, I can re-load my hard disk exactly as it is. I plan on backing up to an external hard drive and have firewire capabilities. I have an iMac G5, non intel, with 20 inch display. I am also wondering if the procedure would be the same for my iBook G4.
Thank you.

In addition to Super Duper which Allan recommended, I use Carbon Copy Cloner, which is quite easy to use. In terms of organizing your FW HDD you may get some ideas from Dr. Smoke's Backup and Recovery. Although Dr. Smoke recommends the use of Retropect, which I found a bit cumbersome, his article full of good ideas.
Good luck.

  • Problems Copying Time Machine Back-Up to New Hard Disk

I tried copying my old time machine back-ups from a 500 GB WD HDD to a new Seagate 1TB. Followed the instructions from "Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive". Although terribly slow it seemed to work all well initially. Had it run over night, then discovered the next morning the process was apparently hanging.
Thinking that maybe the energy saver options were the cause of the problem, I unchecked "put hard disk to sleep when possible". So went through the same painful process. Cannot believe that after about 7 h of transfering the whole thing is stuck again:
More than 2 million items were apparently copied, now nothing is happening at all... (neither GB nor minutes changing anymore)
    1) Is this a common problem? More importantly: how can it be solved?
    2) Is there another way to transfer time machine back-ups to another hard disk?
    Thanks!

This is getting (more) annoying: turned out that something went wrong with the 500 GB HDD with the original time machine back-up. Managed to repair it in the 3rd attempt with disk utility. Heard of SuperDuper and thought I'd give it a try.
Cloning the back-up disk to the new 1 TB HDD seemed to work well, but I am a bit surprised with the result:
It seems time machine recognizes now the 1 TB Seagate HDD as a 500 GB (the size of the original WD) only?

  • I'm attemping to back up my system, entire computer, hard drive w/ LaCie 500gb external drive.

I am attempting to back up my entire computer w/ an LaCie external drive.  I don't have "airport", so I guess time machine will not apply, ? work. ? I am theathered w/ firewire 800.  I have formated the disk, and need to know how to copy - back up the entire system, hard drive, ?  I tried to click and drop it, but...
How do I accomplish this task.  I want to have a back up of everything in case, (God Forbid), it happen's.  And I have to turn my computer, and Iphone over to a frenesic firm to establish my surfing record.  I could use any advice you have there as well.  I tried the Apple store, but they just do repairs.
    Thanks, Blessings, Bob

You certainly can use Time Machine. Firewire 800 is a great way to go.
You just have to activate Time Machine from System Preferences and tell it to use that LaCIe disk.

  • How to copy songs that's already in the ipod into the computer hard disk?

I had some "music" mp3 files, so I put them into my ipod by using iTune. I pick a mp3 file and I drop it into the "MUSIC" section under the "iPOD" section, in iTune. After this, I didn't make any backup, for exemple, place them into the iTUNE's "MUSIC LIBARY" or copy them, place them into a file and store them into the computer's hard disk, because I only had one computer and I don't want to make to much spaces into the computer's hard disk, because the computer's hard disk did not have alot of memories available to use, it's almost fully loaded. Then I discovered that "I could't copy the existence files from the iPod and put them into the computer's hard disk", and I found this is ridiculous. So... can someone please telle me "how to copy or take the mp3 files out from the iPod and place theme into the computer's hard disk?"

To prevent auto sync, connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • I have a hard disk drive with data that i want to back up onto another hard disk drive. I tried just copy and it won't let me paste it in the new drive. I have also tried to drag the files across and they won't go across. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have an external hard disk drive with data that I want to back up onto another extrnal hard disk drive. I have tried to copy and paste but this wont give me a paste option. I have also tried to click and drag but it wont let me either. I have reformatted the external hard drive to accept both mac and pc files and this did not make any difference. Can anyone help me with this?

How did you reformat the drive? If you formatted it as NTFS, your Mac will not be able to write files to it unless you use a small application such as Paragon's.
Please reply as to how you formatted the drive.

  • How to back up a external hard disk to time capsule?

I have a external hard disk (WD passport Mac OS extended format)  connected to iMAC (OS X 10.9.3) through USB. How can I back up the hard disk to my time capsule (802.11ac 2TB)?

By default, the name of the hard drive will appear on the list of Excluded items when you open System Preferences / Time Machine  / Options.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it, and then click on the - (minus) button at the bottom of the Exclusions list to remove the drive from the list of items that are Excluded on backups.
Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive on the next pass.

  • How do I transfer iPhone content back to laptop after hard disk crash

My old hard disk crashed a week ago. How do I transfer all my iPhone content (music, apps, podcasts, ...) back to my laptop after having a new hard disk installed?

I do have all the backups, but this means that I'd have to individually look up each App, then download it again. Isnt there a simpler way? Doesnt Apple keep an index of some sort of all the items I have purchased, so that a one-click procedure may restore the latest versions of all of them with ease?
A few years ago I adopted the strategy to keep everything on the web. With now over 20 GB on the web, it just doesnt make sense to do this any more. After the mess up with my hard disk, as far as my documents go, every time I edit any of them, I simply back them up individually onto 2 separate external drives, and burn them on CDs once a week. Having had 4 major hard disk crashes since 1989, I dont really trust automated backup programs any more. I'm much happier if I know where EXACTLY my documents are at any point in time.

  • Can i back my entire computer up to my server and if so how?

I would like this to be done similar to the way time capsule works. I was wondering if it is even possible to back the whole computer up to the server

Your question is short on details so I'm going to make some assumptions.
If you're asking "Can I assign Time Machine to back-up to shared storage hosted on OS X Server?" then the simple answer is yes. Time Machine supports this functionality and will recognize shares and the need for a name and password and will mount the share and back-up to it automatically.
Shares need to be marked as being Time Machine available in OS X Server so not all shares are automatically available. The only big gotcha is that Time Machine usually sees the entire volume as the available size and doesn't see user limits or quotas without jumping through some hoops. I would only recommend this practice used as as one time back-up (since your question seems to ask about a single back-up) or against actual shared partitions ensure proper compliance to server storage limitations.
    HTH,

PS This is really an OS X Server question rather than an Xserve specific question and there is a better forum for general Server questions.

  • Can Time Machine back up an external hard disk?

I store some data files in the internal hard disk together with the boot volume, and some other data in an external hard disk. I intend to buy a second external hard disk solely for Time Machine. How can I set the Time Machine to back up BOTH the internal and the first external hard disk (that contains data)? Many thanks for answering this.

You can't. You must copy the data off, reformat it, and copy it back.

  • Backing up the old hard disk.

    Howdy guys...
I have an old B&W rev2.2 puter that I hardly use anymore, but have I have everything I have done since 8.6 on it ( I currently have the original 6gig running 10.2.8 and an added Maxtor 120gig running both 8.6 and 9).
What I want to do is put in a new 120gig (seagate) which I have already installed formatted and partitioned.
I would like to copy everything to the new 120gig in the two partitions and remove the original two for other purposes.
Can I do this using the disc copy utility to make a dmg of each and install those on the new drive, or will this not be able to boot?
I have the OS discs around somewhere, but I thought it would be much easier to use a DMG (if applicable)rather than running a clean install and then reinstalling all the various software and transfering all the files I have gathered over the years by hand.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Did you use Disk Utility to format/partition the new drive, with the "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers" option selected? Did you create three partitions on the new drive, to install each OS version on its own partition? To copy OS 10.2.8 from the 6 GB drive to a partition on the new one, you should use a utility like CarbonCopyCloner 2.3 or SuperDuper. Either will copy all files, including the invisible ones, to create a clone of your existing OS X installation. Unfortunately, you'll need to find a download link for SuperDuper 1.5.5 for OS 10.2.8. Versions 2.x require Panther minimally. As for your OS 8.6 and OS 9 installations, you can drag/copy each folder from the old drive to the desired partition on the new one. I prefer to start with the System folder, followed by the Applications and Utilities folders, and then the Documents folder last.

  • Backing up a external hard disk attached to Time Capsule

I have a hard drive attached to the USB port on my Time Capsule where i keep iTunes music and iPhoto Library, however my problem is that this drive does not get backed up through Time Machine. For some reason Time Machine cannot 'see' it? Any advice?

Time Machine does not support backup of a NAS device (e.g. HDD inside or connected to TC). If your USB HDD is formatted HFS+, you can connect it directly to your Mac and TM will back it up.

Your help help shall be gretaly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Get Disk Warrior that will repair the problems without requiring that you reformat the drive - $99.00 on a bootable CD. Will not work on a FAT formatted drive.
You will need to use Drag and Drop to save your files by copying them from the bad drive to a good one.
    To reprep the drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

    Hi folks,
My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. I watched a tutorial, and read some things about it, but I need simple instructions please.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.
