Backing up Exchange Server 2013 CU3 with Windows Server Backup Program

Looking at configuring Windows Server Backup Program to backup Exchange Server 2013 CU3 which is a member a DAG Group using a specific Backup Domain Account.
From my understanding from the following technet Article" Using Windows Server Backup to Backup and Restore Exchange Data" at  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876851(v=exchg.150).aspx I cannot use wbadmin.exe has it uses an older
unsupported version of Powershell.
My question is what are the minimum AD rights required for an AD account needed to be able to backup/restore Exchange Datastore using Windows Server Backup Program in Windows Server 2012?
Thanks,
NIck

Hi Sathish,
After looking at your response, it all make sense except when I look at what exchange right assigned via RBAC.  I understand that the backup service account will require access to the exchange databases
to be able to backing and restoring them.  After looking at the different roles
I'm wondering if I require to assign both the Databases roles for Backing up the databases and the Disaster Recovery Role as well to be able to restore the databases has well as having a mailbox on the exchange
server for the backup service account?
Below is explanation of the roles via the ECP
Database Role
This role enables administrators to create, manage, mount and dismount mailbox and public folder databases on individual servers.
Disaster Recovery
This role enables administrators to restore mailboxes and database availability groups in an organization.
Thanks,
Nick

  • Biztalk 2013 R2 with Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain Controller

Hello, I have a client right who has a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain controller with active directory installed. Is there any reason why I can't install Biztalk 2013 on a Windows Server 2012 R2 box and add it to that farm to use active directory?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Adam

BizTalk Server is only going to use the User Groups created in Domain Controller so ideally i don't think there will be any compatibility issue. Also there isn't any microsoft article which talks about BizTalk compatibility with respect to domain controller.
You will have to create all the Windows Groups and User Accounts in AD, before BizTalk Server configuration.

  • RH Server 9 compatibility with Windows Server 2008 SP2/SQL Server

Our tech support people are preparing for a first install of RH Server 9. They have asked me to find out whether there is a recent patch that would enable it to work with Windows Server 2008 SP2 64 bit and MS SQL Server 2008.
If there is not yet a patch, will there be one for this OS/DB combination in the future, and when?
This is in reference to the knowledgebase article at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/884/cpsid_88483.html which gives a "not recommended" status to this combination.
Our infrastructure team would prefer to use this combination if it is possible.
Second question from the tech team: Do we need to separate the RoboHelp application from the database or can they both reside on the same server?

To answer your first question, no there is no patch to allow SQL Server 2008 to run on a 64 bit server. To answer your second question, I don't know. This is a user to user forum and therefore we are not party to any discussions on when or if a patch will be released. You could sumbit a feature request which the Adobe RoboHelp Product Manager will get. This will help advance your case. You can submit it here:

  • Exchange 2007 RTM support with Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controller

    Hi All,
I have not found any TechNet Article which states about the Windows Server 2012 R2 Active Directory domain controller operating system support with Exchange 2007 RTM, can some one please let me know that does Exchange 2007 RTM supports Windows Server 2012
R2 domain controller operating system, we are in the process of upgrading the domain controllers to 2012 R2 but not the forest and domain functional level to 2012 R2.
    thanks

There are several likely reasons for this.  The most significant is that Exchange 2007 RTM is no longer supported (outside ot extended support, which is not going to include adding support for new operating systems):

You'll note from the following -

    Hi,
Is anyone running a cluster which has Datacenter 2012 clustered with either Standard 2012 or Hyper-V 2012?
I have seen posts here and elsewhere that say it is possible but when I rang Microsoft Licencing team to discuss licensing in this scenario they advised me that the hardware and OS on each clustered server must be identical.
    Now I'm really confused.

  • Licensing issue with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential

    Hi,
we purchased a server that came with Windows Server 2012 Essentials. and we found out some of the issue regarding the licensing. I would like to verify it with the experts here.
    1. This Essential O.S. cannot be deployed as a member server in the domain, only Windows server 2012 r2 Standard and data center is capable as deploy as a member server?
    2. does it work with a single domain with multiple domain controllers and one primary domain controller? Example, 10 offices in different states, each location has a domain controller in their office, I'm installing to install this Essential server as another
domain controller in one of the offices for redundancy purpose. I promoted this server into domain controller with success, but it gives me an fsmo error everyday, and warning about shutting down if i don't transfer the fsmo role to this server.
    3. which leads to this question, so this Essential OS can only be deploy as a single domain as the primary domain controller? Up to 25 user and 50 device license?
    4. Is it possible to deploy it as a domain controller (that office has less than 25 users) in that office while syncing correctly with the other 10 domain controllers in other offices, they are all in the same single domain? I can't make this work, and I
think due to the Essential O.S.'s limitation.
    5. we use a vpn connection to connect all the office together, and all the domain controller uses lan ip address to communicate with each other.
Thank you for the help in advance. I have been researching for the past couple days, but I still couldn't get a clear answer. Thank you again.

    Hi Cliff,
    Thank you for your reply.
    1. We will get a new server 2012 r2 standard to deploy as member server.
2 and 3. Only ONE domain controller can hold all FSMO roles in a single domain, correct? Currently an windows 2003 enterprise, this is our first server in our domain, it holds all the FSMO roles currently.
    4. Yes, we realized essentials will not work for us, so we are switching to 2012 r2 standard to deploy for the new
domain controller for our new office, still under the same domain.
    5. This wasn't a question, just wanted to give out the connection information.
The problem was that We didn't read the Essentials in detail when buying the new server, on dell website, it said it was perfect for small business, we didn't know it has to run as a primary DC. it was great in price, and it doesn't need CALs.
but we quickly realized after deploying it as a DC, it gives us error about Server Licensing compliance, and will shut down automatically. Then we were going to use it as a member server to run application, and realized we couldn't. So we are returning the
server, and getting a new one with standard r2 2012 and CALs license.
    It was a costly mistake.
    Thank you again.

  • Disappearing disk space Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise

I've got an interesting problem with a virtual machine in our VMWare environment.  It is Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise installed.  I started out with a 60GB disk and it started running out of space, so I increased
it in VMWare and extended the partition to 100GB.  Well, that lasted for a bit and so I extended it again.  I've done this 3 or 4 times and now I've got a 160GB disk with about 2-3GB of space remaining (and it started with 10GB remaining).
WinDirStat shows 105GB of <Unknown> space being used, which is probably my issue.  However, I can't determine what this is and it keeps growing like a tapeworm.  The context menu on the <Unknown> files has all the options disabled,
so WinDirStat doesn't appear to have access to whatever the file(s) is/are.  I've performed several chkdsk /f on the C: drive and nothing bad is reported.  I don't have any restore points and am not running VSS (that I'm aware of).  The pagefile
reports as being about 4.9GB, so that's not the issue.  No large files are shown anywhere and my explorer settings are set to show me all files, including system files.
When I try to run WinDirStat with elevated permissions, it hangs and becomes unresponsive.
I've even resorted to running CCleaner to see if it found anything, but it simply found the standard temp files and such...about 1GB.
I'm pulling my hair out...and I don't have much to start with.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Russ

It appears that somehow, Microsoft Fusion Assembly binding logging was turned on and many of the temp folders located at c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\InetCache\IE were filling up with hundreds of thousands of Fusion HTM log files.
This is controlled by an entry in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog which was set to 1.  Hopefully, setting it back to zero will fix the issue.  As a result of figuring this out, I have recovered almost 80GB of disk
space occupied by the log files.
I thought WinDirStat would show me what I needed to know, but it turns out TreeSize (which I've used in the past) works much better.

  • Integrate On-Premises Exchange Server With Windows Server Essentials

I have Exchange Server 2013 installed on Win Server 2012 R2 joined to Windows Server Essentials domain.  Attempting to integrate the Exchange Server into the Essentials domain from the Essentials Dashboard using the wizard fails with the error, "Cannot
locate an Exchange Server on the network. Make sure that your Exchange Server is setup and that it is connected to the network".  I can communicate with the server in multiple ways from the Essentials Server and other computers on the domain.  Mail
flow in and out of the Exchange Server works without issue.  I can use the various management tools to administer the Exchange Server.  The only task I cannot complete is integrating it into the Essentials environment which I need to do to move on
to creating user mailboxes for user accounts setup in AD.
All research to date has come up empty handed.
    Help!

    Hi RSUL,
    Any update?
On current situation, would you please let me confirm something more? It may help me to understand this issue
    clearly.
Would you please let me know how join the Windows Server 2012 R2 (which had been installed Exchange Server 2013) to Windows Server Essentials domain? Did use Connector software
    (type http://servername/connect)?
On server essentials, please open Dashboard and navigate to DEVICES. Then check the Status of this server which had been installed Exchange Server 2013.
Currently, the Services Integration features, including on-premises Exchange integration, are only supported in a single domain controller environment. Meanwhile, the integration
wizard must be run on a domain controller.
In addition, please refer to the following article and check if can help you.

    Hi,
From your description, you have deployed Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 in a co-existence environment. After you upgrade to CU6, databases unexpectedly shut down. In your case, here is a kb for your reference.

  • Install Sharepoint 2013 Foundation on Windows Server 2008 R2

Could anyone please help me with the steps to install the Sharepoint 2013 foundation (including SQL express) with Windows Server 2008 R2 ?

You just need to download Foundation, run the pre-req installer, then run the setup executable, select Single Server, and this will install both SQL Express and Foundation.  This isn't typically a 'recommended' setup, but it is an easy one.

  • Backed up files partially disappear after restore (Windows Server 2008 R2 - Windows Server Backup)

    Dear all,
I am experiencing a problem with "Windows Server 2008 R2", using Windows Server Backup.
    Here's my setup:
    Server: RAID 5 Disk setup
    Backup:
By using Windows Server Backup (within Windows Server 2008 R2), C: and D: were fully backed up, with "System State" and "Baremetal Recovery" options selected. Backup went okay without any errors.
    Restore:
By using Windows Recovery Environment  (booted from Windows Server DVD), C: and D: were fully restored to the original partitions with "System Recovery" option found within Windows RE (without re-formatting partitions during restore). Restore
went OK without any errors. Rebooted, and system has been running fine.
    Problem:
After the restore, the system itself seems running OK; no BSOD, no crash, no visible errors.
However, our client insisted some files (around 6 to 7) which are related to the propriety software has "disappeared" right after System Recovery.
    Question:
Since Windows Server Backup is using "Volume Shadow Copy" technology which enables "live backup" of the running system, is it possible that some files will disappear (=restore error) after
    System Recovery?
I cannot really find any errors or warnings related to Windows Server Backup in the event log, through. No Windows-backup errors. No VSS errors, too.
Do anybody have experienced this kind of problem in the past?  Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply, Ms. Mandy.
To make things clear, let me explain to you briefly:
    1. The "missing data" was backed up with "full system backup".
    2. After a system restore from the above backup image, as you mentioned, partitions has been overwritten with the partions' backup data in the Backup Data Set taken by Windows Server Backup. No error with backup. No error after restore, and reboot - system
    has been running fine.
    3. Although there was a report that the affected files(about 7 java exectables) were missing after the above restore operation, other aspect of system was running fine at the time of the report.
    4. I have checked the original backup data set - and voila, there ARE files which seems to gone after restore.
    5. When I used Windows Server Backup "on" Windows Server 2008 R2 normal environment (= NOT Recovery environment from DVD) and selectd ONLY these affected files to restore, these files could be RESTORED successfully, without any errors. SO... data
    was property backed up.
    > The recovery will overwrite the partitions so files created after the backup point will be missing.
I understand, and this is not the case this time, because the affected files are already present in the backup data set (= I have mounted the backup data as VHD, and I could clearly see them present in the mounted VHD file)
Plus, these files are completely restoreable via "selective file restore" in Windows Server Backup.
    Things I want to know/confirm:
    > The recovery will overwrite the partitions
If I understand this correctly, in case that the files in question are already present in the backup data set, these files SHOULD be restored after full system restore, right? (If these files could not be restored, Windows Server Backup SHOULD show some errors.)
What do you think, Ms. Mandy? :)

  • Mavericks permission issues with Windows Server deduplicated shares.

We have a number of 10.9-10.9.3 - Mavericks - machines installed throughout our facility. Much of the user content is pulled from shares stored on our Windows Server 2012 fileservers with deduplication enabled. I have found that files newly written or unoptimized are able to be accessed without issue - read, written, modified, etc. Once the file gets optomized/deduplicated and Windows adds the P & L attributes - sparse and symlink - the Macs running Mavericks begin to have access issues.
Once the files get deduplicated, users begin receiving read access errors when copying files (see error1 below). This happens when copying to folders within the current folder tree or copying somewhere to the local system. If you 'stop' the copy operation and retry a few more times, it may eventually work for the specific instance but fail again later. I am however, able to copy these files without issue via the terminal.
Other systems running 10.7 do not experience the same issues and are able to access file server resources without issue. Many of the systems having issues are newer and thus not able to be downgraded to 10.8 or 10.7.
I have tried finder replacements such as Pathfinder but the results are the same. I know this is at least similar to the issues many Mac users are already experiencing and posting about but I haven't seen it directly linked to deduplication and the attributes written by Windows server. Has anyone seen this issue? Have any solutions been found?
    Error 1:
When copying files after the PL attributes have been set by deduplication.
"One or more items can't be copied to "Foler" because you don't have permissions to read them.
Via the system.log, I am also seeing the following error when accessing these deduplicated file shares. The reparse point tag listed below is "IO_REPARSE_TAG_DEDUP"
    Reported error:
    "smbfs_nget: filename.ext - unknown reparse point tag 0x80000013"

This is a 'known problem' as discussed on the MacWindows site, see http://www.macwindows.com/More-on-OS-X-conflicts-with-Windows-Server-Deduplicati on.html
It appears to still affect Mavericks 10.9.5 at least from the lack of any positive reports to the contrary. It is perhaps a bit late but it would have been worth signing up for the public beta of Yosemite and testing that and if needed reporting it as an issue for Yosemite as this will be getting more bug fix attention than Mavericks now.
I would agree turning off de-duplication is not a desirable solution, however other possibilities to consider are installing the standard Samba software on a Mac and using that instead of Apple's SMBx software. This is done by using the SMBup installer See http://eduo.info/2013/07/13/smbup-faq it does not officially list Mavericks but I did see at least one report that it still worked. A second possibility is to install ExtremeZ-IP which installs an AFP server on to your Windows Server and also gives the bonus of supporting Spotlight searches.
Note: You should only try SMBup on a test setup first.
