Backing Up Files & Applications

It seems to me that I should have been able to find a simple answer to this question, but I wasn't successful.
I want to backup all the files & apps from my 20" Intel Duo iMac. I do not have an external disk, but I think I should be able to do so to a DVD. Can I?
But I cannnot find a backup program installed on the computer. I must be missing something. There's probably some menu item somewhere that I just click on & it backs up!
Nor have I been able to find instructions on the Mac site for doing this.
I have Photoshop CS3 Beta on my machine, and adobe instructs to backup the entire computer before doing the uninstall.
THANKS

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
5. BurnAgain DVD
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. See also the Apple article on backup and restore.
Some of the utilities mentioned above will backup to removable media and even span across multiple discs - Retrospect, Apple's Backup, BurnAgain DVD, and Impression.

On your iMac launch iTunes and at the top next to the Apple symbol click iTunes > Preferences > Devices and tell me what you see. You last sync should be there showing only a device name. If you have an older backup it will be there as well the difference is it will be the device name with a date and time stamp. Sync and backups are two different things and there is a chance iTunes made a backup the first time you hooked up your iPhone 5.

  • Accidentally deleted all my applications and associated files using App Cleaner and when I put them all back in to Applications none of them work now

Hi last night I stupidly downloaded App Cleaner and deleted all my applications and their associated files. Because I panicked I wasn't able to use the "put back" so I just dragged everything back in to Applications. Now none of the applications will work as some of the associated files aren't in the correct location and some of the files aren't even applications. i did not back up my system with Time Machine (lesson learnt). Please please can someone help me, I know that Mac's don't have a roll back like PC's

They do. It's called Time Machine.
You need to reinstall all of your Apps. That should replace all of the support files you nuked.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings

I need to update my system, I realized that I need Snow Leopard (quiet late) before Maverick. My question is, how can I install it keeping files and all the data. I found this on Internet, does it work?
Install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings
If you follow these steps, the installer will replace your operating system if one is already present, but will preserve your account information and personal files.  You may have to reinstall some applications, however.
Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you have more than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer while holding down the c key. This causes your computer to start up from the install disc rather than your hard drive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, release c .
The Mac OS X installer should open automatically. Follow the on-screen prompts to read and accept the license agreement and begin the installation. When prompted to choose a destination disk, select your preferred location and click Install.
When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restart your computer. After the installation completes, a configuration program may begin automatically if you are installing for the first time. You will need to supply basic setup information for your computer.
Update your system software to ensure that you have the most recent operating system components.  From the Apple menu, select Software Update... , and then follow the instructions on the screen. Often, you will have to restart your computer, and you may have to run Software Update multiple times before it can completely update your system.

That's why you need to back it up. You won't need to restore the backup immediately afterwards unless something goes wrong during the upgrade, but you'll need it later; the drive will eventually fail.

  • How can I get back into my application aftermath invoking Start up page of index.htm ?

    Gorgeous Hello All,
If anyone of you can please provide me a solution for the following, will help me in plentious and galore.
Am using Adobe RoboHelp, Version 10 and IE version being 10.
    A hurdle :-
I have a application which has been developed in ASP .NET, Version 4.0. Help link has been created in this application wherein here the Start up page of index.htm has been linked to be read from the RoboHelp local project folder\!SSL!\Multiscreen_HTML5\desktop. All are working absolutely fine except when
I login into the above-said application -> click on the Help page -> the index.htm opens with Contents, Index, Glossary -> Am able to successfully perform any task by respective clickings
-> But I am not able to get back into my application when I click on the IE provided Back button (Alt+Left) -> Any amount of invoking Back button makes the system getting looped into this Start up page of index.htm only -> When I Close Tab (Ctrl + W) or Close ( X ) -> The window session gets closed and I have to repeat all by relogin once again.
How can I get back into my application aftermath invoking Start up page of index.htm ?
(I can always get back into the application easily by erasing those parts in the url which refers to this RoboHelp linkages – but this certainly looks non-polished work)

(But Jeff : When I used Microsoft HTML Help as primary layout to generate chm file , My Help when launched from my Application opened in a new browser window and when I closed this Help browser window did not close my application. Looks like need to write few liner code to get this issue settled )

  • How do I access my back up files from the time machine if my computer was stolen?

Hi, how do I access my back up files from the time machine if my mac book pro was stolen? I have a mac book air and mac too. But not sure how I can get back all the files from the stolen computer from my time capsule

On the Mac Book Air or other Mac that you have, use Migration Assistant to transfer files from the Time Machine backups of the Mac that was taken.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant

  • Is there any way to take backed up files from an old OS and get them onto a new phone?  They are backed up as txt files.

I have a six year old lap top with an old OS and itunes 10.  I backed up my i phone 4 on it.  I got an I phone 5 and the version of Itunes compatible is not supported by the laptop.  I installed itunes on a different computer and when trying to sync the iphone 4 to the desktop, updated the iphone 4 software.  Now my iphone 4 is no longer compatible with my laptop.  I am interested in getting my contacts and photos from my old laptop to either iphone at this point.  I have the backed up files but they are txt files in the Mobile Sync Back ups.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Generally when moving from one phone to another, individuals will make a backup of the one device and then restore to the second device. However, it seems you are no longer using the computer you made the backup on, so that can be a problem. There is no way for you to take information out of the backup and insert it in the iPhone. It is an all or none proposition. But, just moving the backup folder from one computer to another doesn't work either.
Did you sync the contacts to a supported application on the computer? Also, if you are referring to the photos in the camera roll, you can import them to the computer by connecting the phone to the computer. You do not need iTunes to do that. Just plug in and let the computer photo import utility take the pictures and put them on the computer. Then you would sync the photos back to the photo library on the new phone,
Contacts you can look at a 3rd party app that might help. MCBackup is in the app store and converts your contacts to a file you can email to yourself and then click on it and open it. Suggest syncing contacts/calendar to a supported application on the computer, or to iCloud so you can recover a lot easier.

  • Where do I find back up files to restore a project ?

Holy sh... my FCP X suddenly shut down in the middle of a huge project - a music video with a lot of transistions, effects, colourgrading etc. I have been working on it for many hours and was delighted about how smooth everything went, untill....crash!. After I reopened FCP there was nothing left of the last 5-6 hours work, just an almost empty timeline. Just the mastertake and thats it...
It have been searching my computer for back up files, but cannot find any. I- m new to this and rather desperate.. Is there any help to get?
(What I have tried is to use "finder" and "search" to search on the computer and eksternal harddisk after files with the project name. I have looked in "all films". and in "today".)
    Please...

Did you restore the file from Time Machine? You don't open files from the backup disk. You must use the Time Machine application.
From the Help menu of the Finder select Help Center. Search for "Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight" to find instructions on how to restore files using Time Machine.

  • Hi,  Had boot issue and got the following from DU repair function on Macintosh hd: updating boot support.....Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk.....reformat and restore backed up files. How is that done or do I go to Genius?

In reference to question the computer gave no warning but lost internet connectivity.  I shut down for a while and when returned it would only boot to gray logo screen with spinning gear.  Ran disk utility and on Mac HD drive it stopped after "Updating boot support partitions as required". Then in red: Error: Disk utility can' repair this disk ....disk, and restore backed up files.   I'm running OS X 10.8 and had just updated the iOS about three days ago.  Not familiar with reformat process on MacBook Pro and would like some ideas whether I should go to the Genius Bar here in Sydney or try it on my own.   I have been using time machine to back up to a 1TB La Cie drive right up to the crash.   Thanks for any advice.

Well it turned out the drive was shot.  Took it to the genius bar yesterday and they ran a test on the drive before trying the restore routine again.  Drive failed.
Replaced the drive and got the MBP back today.  Pretty quick and decent service once you get an appointment.
Now having trouble figuring how to do the Time Machine  saved files.  Have several applications which I'd like to keep but not sure how to trans the apps from my backup to the new.  Hunting for answers on that on the web.
    Thanks for you help, Eustace.

  • Can I use Time Machine to recover backed-up files from a stolen computer?

    Hi everyone,
I used Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro but unfortunately it was stolen this week. I'm going to buy a new MacBook Pro and would like to recover the backed-up files from my old computer via Time Machine, though not necessarily transform the new computer into a clone of the old one. Can anyone point me to step-by-step directions for how to do this with Time Machine? Is there a way of using Time Machine to select, a la carte, which backed-up data you want to restore to your new machine, or is it an all-or-nothing deal?
Thanks for your help and advice!

    Yes. Use the migration assistant.
First, I'd set up the new computer and choose not to migrate any data (this sometimes causes issues). Run all software updates, then run the Migration Assistant (In applications). It will allow you to choose a time capsule to migrate information from. You will be able to choose what information to pull from the time capsule: it won't simply clone the old computer.

  • Can not connect to Time Machine back up file after restore

After receiving my G5 iMac back from the Apple Store I had to restore from my Time Machine backup (they had to erase the hard drive). The backup seemed to go fine until it hit the "Network settings." It froze there for a couple of hours. Everything else seemed fine. I quit the back up and restarted my iMac and it seems to be doing fine. I did notice that some of my shareware programs need to have their keycodes re-entered and when I open up a program that has not run since being restored I get that warning window telling me that it is opening an application for the first time.
But here is the main issue...Time Machine doesn't recognize the previous back up file. I do not want erase the current file to start over...just in case something didn't get properly restored. I much rather just have Time Machine recognize the existing file...anyway of doing that? I do not have enough room on my external hard drive to have 2 backup files.
    Thanks...Lenny

I am having a similar problem - when I updated to Mavericks the install seemed to go OK until the last minute, then it literally hung for hours. I decided to re-boot the computer.  From there, it seemed like the Mavericks install was a "clean" install, and it was like setting up a brand new computer.  All of my programs were kept, but it lost all of my files from finder, as well as all my e-mails, etc.  When I tried to backup from Time Machine, none of the buttons seem to work, and I can't get it to work.  Also, before the install my 500 GB Time Machine drive was showing almost full, now it shows about 300 MB full.  I also tried to migrate the files from the Time Machine drive to the iMac, still with no luck.
Good thing I had migrated my iTunes and photos to other external drives, and I was able get those back. Losing 500 MB of photos probably would have given me a heart attack.
    Any suggestions?
    Arrrgh!

  • Repaired imac has come back with lion. how do I restore backed up files

I had my iMac's hard disk replaced under warranty. I now need to restore my backed-up files from time machine.
The Apple store were nice and have upgraded my OS from Snow Leopard to Lion, so I'm now confused as to how I make sure I restore the right files for my applications etc.
How do I go about it? I'd like to keep Lion, but I also want to make sure I've got all my applications etc. from Snow Leopard running.

Boot with the SL install disc, erase the new HD, install SL, and on first boot migrate from your TM backup.
    It's easier than that.
Just do a full system restore, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.  No need to erase the disk or install Snow Leopard -- the restore will do all that for you, plus you'll have the exact same version of OSX as you did before.

  • How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (2000)

How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (yr. 2000). I know that sounds basic but I have very few techno skills. So please "talk down" to me. I had a newer PC (2005) but the hard drive crashed and I am trying to resuscitate this old mac until I can afford to buy a new one. I am in the middle of writing a book (based on Steve Job's life) and must have SOMETHING to write with. Anyone have a better one they can loan me? I am in Maine on the coast. BTW this machine seems to have trouble reading or formatting most CD-disks. Can anyone recommend a type and brand that works well with this model? Thanks for any assistance anyone can render. Here is what I have:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,4
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.9)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          1 MB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.2.8f1

Why do you want to reformat the drive?  Is it because the machine is running slow?
Be sure to backup you important files, like the book, daily.
The cheapest approach would be to try to figure out why the machine is running slow.  Be sure to try safe boot.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
The older versions of ccc were donationware.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

"SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless."
