Backing up Final Cut Pro projects

I would like to save projects on a portable source such as a DVD. I would like to use the same video on several different work stations. Every way I try seems to save just a "link" to the video stored on my computer, so when I try and load it on another computer it shows the video clips as "offline".
How can I save the actual video clips on a DVD that I can use in Final Cut Pro on another computer?
Thanks for your help

Just to make sure, please don't hit me if you already know this, but...
The Final Cut project files are just "organization and direction" files. They are files that simply contain directions and 'pointers' to the actual video clips saved on your hard drive. They tell Final cut to "use just this section" of the actual captured clip on your hard drive.
The actual captured clips might be stored on your main hard drive in the following folder(s):
documents\Final Cut Pro Documents\Capture Scratch\ (Your project filename folders here)
Again, you can smack me if I'm not getting the gist of your question, but the key would be moving your actual captured clips to an external firewire drive (as the others have suggested) and then moving that to the other machine ALONG with your project files.
that make sense?

If your working on an external hard drive, just drag/drop back in the Final Cut Projects folder, and re-open FCPX

  • Error sending multi-track project back to Final Cut Pro, can't open XML

I am an experienced Final Cut Pro user but just tried using Soundtrack Pro for the first time on a real project. I sent the audio from my Final Cut sequence to a Soundtrack Pro multi-track project, added a few effects and created some fade-ins and fade-outs, and then tried to Export back to Final Cut.
I selected "File > Export", named my file and selected "After Export > Send files to Final Cut Pro sequence."
Now in Final Cut an error appears that says "The document “Name.xml” could not be opened. Final Cut Pro cannot open files in the “Final Cut Pro XML File” format."
Am I crazy or is something wrong happening here? I can get the exported audio files to appear in my sequence if I select "File > Import > XML" in Final Cut, but after this whole process Final Cut seems to be functioning unreliably (after closing Final Cut and re-opening, I even once got a similar error that said "Final Cut cannot open files in the Final Cut Pro Project File format", which is obviously crazy).
Am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your easy setup has the correct frame rate for your sequence.  Seems crazy but somehow or other fcp assigns a frame rate to audio files.   I've found this can sometimes be tricky to get right.  Here's what I've done to force the issue.  Make sure the easy setup frame rate reflects that of the target sequence in fcp.  Create a new project.  import the audio in the new project.  And then copy the clip from the new project to your main project.

  • Showing a Final Cut Pro project to an audience - from Final Cut or Quicktime?

I've created a 13 min Final Cut Pro project to show at an Awards Ceremony of our college.  Is it better to show the video directly from Final Cut or to export it and show it from Quicktime?  What's the best quality output?

    hi,
its not about quality. Since you can export out at the same quality as prorez. Its about performance. Since fcpx has to combine multiple sources, audio, graphix, video etc, then combine them al into a whole, there is far more that could go wrong. Always export out a finished mastered rendered file and play that. Just make sure that the computer playing the file back can handle it. ie if you chose an uncompressed codec to export out as, the computer may not like playing it back. Choose a prorez or h264 codec, they will be fine.

  • Sharing and EDITing Final Cut Pro Projects...

I'm trying to Share Final Cut Pro Projects between separate User Accounts. The originator of the Project saves to the Shared Folder, which should allow others to not only read, but Edit the files. Unfortunatley, the Scratch Files (video) within the Project always looses it's connection when the Second User connects and trys to edit the Project.
Is their an easy way to Share the Projects so that Others can both Read and Save Changes? Does the Second User always have to rename the file to get it to save back to the Shared Folder?
    Thanks for any Help! !

Hello and welcome to the forum.
It's always been my understanding that you could open a project created by FCE in FCP, but not the reverse. I fear you may be out of luck.

  • How to save Final Cut Pro project to an ftp server to then open on a different computer

Hello, I work for a graphic design firm that also does video production for businesses. We are using Final Cut Pro X in our office which has an FTP server connected to all office computers.
What we want is to be able to have on employee start a project in Final Cut Pro X, save it to the server; then have another employee open up the same project and continue working from a different computer.
Right now, we have a lot of our Final Cut files saved to the server, and the files will show up in the server on the other employee's machine. BUT, we scroll in the server to the file for the Final Cut Pro project on the other computer, and the file is grayed out, unable to be opened on the new computer.
I've tried right clicking and choosing "open with Final Cut" and Final Cut does then open, but right before it opens the project within Final Cut, a message comes up saying "The document could not be opened. Open documents from within Final Cut Pro," which of course, I see no way to do that from within Final Cut Pro.
I've also called Apple Care, they reminded me that we can't have one project open on two computers at the same time, and that's fine. We are willing to close the project on computer one to then open on computer two.
If you have an answer let me know. We don't want to have to load onto an external hard drive to then load onto the other machine, especially since we have a server ready to go.
    Thanks for your help.

You can share projects via the ftp server, but you need to:
    1) Have all the media in identical events on each editor's machine;
    2) Set up the project  and share the entire folder for that project first;
    3) Afterwards, you can share just the project file itself
You CANNOT work directly on projects and events stored in the ftp server.

  • Can't Update Old Final Cut Pro Projects

I use Final Cut Pro for work and just recently updated. I didn't realize that I needed to have all my projects in my "Final Cut Pro Projects" file while updating. I had a lot of my projects in a "Final Cut Pro Projects-Not In Use" file when I updated my Final Cut Pro and now those projects will not update. I didn't have a "Final Cut Pro Projects" file after updating so I created a new one under "Movies" in my Finder and added all the projects to that and Final Cut Pro still won't update them. What am I doing wrong?
Also, now that I've updated the projects are exporting as .MP4s and my boss wants them as .MOVs again. Is there a way I can change them to that?

I have been trying to add a screen shot to this reply for the past ten minutes but I keep getting "An error occurred while trying to submit your post. Please try again" So I will try to explain it to you.
I click the arow on the bottom right hand corner. Then click "Master File..."
    My settings are:
    Format: Computer
    Video codec: H.264 Better Quality
    Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Audio file format: QuickTime Movie (AAC)
    (don't click Include chapter markers)
    Open with: QuicTime Player (default)
On the bottom it reads left to right:
    1920 x 1080 | 23.98 fbs   Stereo (L R) | 48 kHz  00:00:04:02   MPEG-4 movie 10.4 MB est.
Then I click "Next..." and save it to my Desktop and click "Save"
I hope that makes sence! Sorry the screen shots didn't work!

  • What is the proper way to back up Final Cut Pro x

What is the proper way to back up Final Cut Pro x?
Final Cut Pro X & Motion 5 are the only two programs I do not have a hard copy for.
Click and dragging the files from the applications folder to an external harddrive seems to simple to be correct.
Are their additional folders or actions that are required to back up these software?
I'm having problems and was instructed to back up all files ASAP before taking my iMac (mid 2010) to the Apple store for treatment.

Most apps from the Mac App Store are simple drag & drop installation. DId FCPX or M5 just download to your Mac or was there an installer app involved? If they just donwloaded, then dragging them to backup media should be enough. If there was an installer, then you should backup the installer. But these apps aren't going to disappear from the Mac App Store in the short time that your Mac is in a repair shop. You can also download them again fromthe Purchased pane after you have signed into your account.

  • Converting a Final Cut Pro project into one Final Cut Express HD can read..

Is there any way I can convert a final cut pro project into something i can open in an earlier version of final cut, namely final cut express HD?

    Tim,
Unfortunately you can not go from FCP to FCExpress. You can go backwards from say FCP7 to FCP6 or FCP 5 using XML's. The XML version depends on which FCP you have.

How do you import final cut pro projects into imovie?
(like you create a project in final cut but i want to save it, and import it into imovie..

    Hi -
Mr. Ross is right, there is no direct way to export your project with all it's elements into iMovie.
If, on the other hand, you have a completed sequence in FCP that you want to export as a finished element, then import into iMovie for you to re-edit or apply titles, music, etc. you would:
    In FCP:
Click on the Sequence Icon you want to export in your browser.
Go to the menu File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Give your movie a name a navigate to where you want it stored. Make sure you choose Settings: Current Settings and have the Make Movie Self Contained checked. Click Save.
    Close FCP and open iMovie.
    In iMovie:
Go to the menu File > Import > Movies and navigate to the movie you just exported from FCP. Choose if you want your movie imported in it's original size, etc.
Click Import. Your movie will be imported into iMovie.
Note that using this method only gives you only the elements that made up your FCP sequence, so this may not give you the flexibility you need.
    Hope this helps.

  • Open Final Cut Pro project in Logic Pro for audio editing

I want to open a Final Cut Pro project i'm working on into Logic Pro without having to export my large FCP projects to video all the time. Is there any way of doing this?

Thanks for replying to my question, I did mean Logic Pro but I'm relatively new to these programs. What's the difference with Soundtrack Pro and Logic Pro exactly? If I understood you correctly, Logic Pro would be the program I need since I need to create audio from scratch. Just to be more clear again, I want to see my video while composing audio at the same time but without having to export my video all the time since it takes long, being a big file. Thanks again for the reply.

  • DVD back to Final Cut Pro

So basically we have made a DVD movie and would like to convert it back into Final Cut Pro for later editing at times. Is this possible and if so how is it done? Would you use a program like Popcorn, DVD Shrink etc. to rip the DVD and then import some type of file back into FCP? Thanks in advance.

  • Sending Audio Files back to Final Cut pro, nothing.

    Simple issue:
I send from Final Cut Pro To Sound track pro some audio files along with the clip.
I edit it in Sound track Pro, and save (just like in the tutorial) then I quit.
I go back to Final Cut Pro and what do you know, the file that I sent HAS NOT BEEN EDITED!
    Some one help.

I tried the same thing earlier in the year, and when the sound came back into FCP, it was corrupted!
Since then, I don't know if this is a good option, but it seems to work fine:
Once I have finished my editing in FCP, I export the soundtrack into an AIFF. I edit the AIFF via STP, and when finished, import it back into FCP.
I'm not experienced enough to know if this method is bad, but it has worked well for me!
