Backing up folders in Entourage

Hi. I'm not sure whether this is the right place to post questions about Entourage but it's the closest I can find . . .
I want to reformat my hard drive and upgrade from OSX.2 to OSX.4.
When I reinstall Entourage, how do I make sure that I can keep the mailboxes/folders I've set up myself and their contents?
My mail is set up as a Pop account and all messages are still on the ISP sever. I've backed up the "Microsoft User Data" folder - will this be enough to tell Entourage where everything goes once it's re-installed?
Or should I save every message in separate folders that mirror the ones I've set up in Entourage as well?

Ah! Of course - thanks. That seems to work.

  • How do I change the default locations for the iTunes music and iPhone back-up folders?

My computer's hard drive is partitioned, with one partition having all of the Windows system files, and the other having all of my documents, music, videos, etc.  When I installed iTunes, it automatically created its music and iPhone folders on the Windows partition.  I've been able to change the default save folders for other programs to the second partition, but I'm having troubles finding this option in iTunes (I even went back and re-installed it to see if I could find it that way, but no dice).  Is there a way to change the default folders for the iTunes library and iPhone files?  It takes up A LOT of space on my Windows partition, so it would be very great to get that moved over.
    Thanks!

You can't selectively move individual folders withing the iTunes  folder, but you can move the entire folder to, say, an external dive. To delink the iTunes application to the new library location:
Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows).
In the resulting dialog, click the Choose Library button.
Select the iTunes folder you moved to the external hard drive.
Click Choose (Mac OS X) or Open (Windows) and then choose the iTunes Library file inside .

  • In lion os lost ability to scroll back into folders

In Lion OS have lost ability to scroll back and forth in folders within folders on mouse. Bought Trackpad - still cannot do it. Asked about it at Apple store - even had an employee create multiple folders within folders - could not get the mouse or trackpad to scroll. Had to use back arrows.

I have found the same issue - this is very frustrating and I'm at a lost to understand why this functionality has been removed ... or is it only happening to some systems?  Being able to "swipe" through folders was great and the whole "gestures" aspect of Lion was significantly hyped.
Has anyone else found the same problem?
    Thanks.

  • UNIX cp Easier way than automator to back up folders to an external drive

I created an automator workflow to backup one of the folders on my desktop.
The problem is, if I add a file to one of the subfolders automator does not backup the folder contents. The workflow works only if I add an item to the folder in the top of the heirarchy. What should I do?
the applescript generated by automator is

I had this message posted some time ago on this forum. Was looking for a solution to back up files from my USB flash disk to my Firewire hardisk.
Just as I was learning unix from this great book at oreilly.com called "Learning UNIX for Mac OS X tiger", stumbled upon the unix command 'cp'.
    cp -R /Volumes/USBDisk/SourceFolder /Volumes/FirewireDisk/destinationFolder
All I need Now is to learn the UNIX commands to compare two folder contents before the copy command.

  • Structure of MobilSync/Back Up Folders

Good Afternoon  I posted this in th eiTunes area earlier today but I didn't get any hits.  So I htought it's really a MacBook Air Question??
Steve was able to help me find my hidden Mobilsync/Backup folders and I wanted to confirm a couple of things.  I've done a fair amount of digging but I could not find any clarity on several questions.
I am backing up a number of IOS devices:
    A  Apple ID 1 - iPhone 4
    B  Apple ID 2 - iPhone 4,  IPad Mini
    1.  What I'm seeing is a single back-up folder for these Apple IDs, devices and back-ups.  Is that correct?
    2.  Is there any way to "decode" which back-up is for which device and Apple ID?  I spent a few minutes on the Back-up sub-folder item nanes but couldn't see anything obvious.  I didn't want to touch any of the files in these subfolders.
I can't "decode" what back-up is for what device (without an outside process of tracking date and time of back-up)... right?
    Cheers

That's not how TM works. It makes an incremental backup every hour or so. If nothing changes, then nothing is backed up. TM only backs up what has changed since the last backup. There is only one major backup folder - Backups.backupdb. It contains the hierarchy of the TM backup.
If you wanted to use the external drive for something other than storage, then you should have partitioned the drive in advance. You can try partitioning on the fly using Disk Utility to resize the existing partition, then add a new partition for your movie storage. Just be sure your TM partition is not shrunk too much. You should provide at least twice the capacity on the backup volume as the total size of the drives you are backing up.

  • How can I back-up folders that I've created within my Thunderbird e-mail program?

When I took my computer in to Best Buy, where I purchased it, I was told that they could not extract and back-up the info in the various e-mail folders I created within Thunderbird. This was unacceptable to me in that I want that info, so I'm asking how I can create a folder(s) in Thunderbird that can be backed up should it be necessary to wipe my hard drive/operating system clean?
    Thank you.
    LW

First take your computer to a REAL repair shop, not Best Buy.
Mozbackup is the best for backing up Firefox and Thunderbird.
Your profile is where your email and settings are stored. It is just a file like any other and any competent computer person would know this and be able to back it up for you. TheGeek Squad does not employee any of these.

  • Outlook personal and public folders via Entourage?

I'm the only Mac user in my company and for the most part, this relatively new transition has been seamless. The only tricky part has been with personal and public folders that are currently in Outlook - I can't see them in Entourage. Instead of having an intranet, we have all of our policies, forms, procedures, and general (corporate) information in Public Folders, and then our email accounts are limited and we're instructed to use Personal Folders for any emails that need to be kept longer than 60 days.
Has anyone else run into this, and if so, were you able to find a solution?
    Many thanks,
    Sabrina

I thought Entourage WAS an Apple product.
Nope. M$ product. Always has been.
why we chose to use Entourage instead of Mail in the first place
Possibly because it's closer to Outlook in "feel" and is somewhat easier to configure from an IT perspective (i.e. they don't have to do anything to get Entourage to communicate with an MS Exchange server).
Mail can be configured to work with an Exchange server, either by having IMAP support enabled on the server side, or by configuring mail to access the OWA (Outlook Web Access) server. Your IT group should be able to help there (note that "should" does not necessarily mean "will!).
    Hope this helps...

  • Firefox deleted everything and all back up folders

I opened Firefox today and everything was gone. I went into my profile folder to look for my backups,
    C:\Documents and Settings\me\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxx.default
and there are no backups! No bookmarkbackup folder, nothing. All Extensions are gone.
I never deleted anything from Firefox. I never touched that folder. I never uninstalled, and re-installed FF, I did nothing. I just opened it up today and everything is gone, and the backups are completely gone.
I accidentally closed Firefox and when I went back the back up folder reappeared and contained nothing other than backups for today from the session I just ended. Nothing older than that.
I assume I am literally screwed here. It held all my work bookmarks, which aren't exactly easy to find again.

Just discovered that when i go to C:\Users\Me\Desktop all my folders and files are there. I can drag them to restore them but it still sheds no light on why all my programs are uninstalled or why all my bookmarks are gone

  • Moving folders from Entourage to Apple Mail

I need to move several folders of 'saved messages' from Entourage to Apple Mail. I have done by using File>Import Mailboxes then clicked Microsoft Entourage. I get the boxes up and tick the ones I want to import.
They do drop into Mail, as do the headers of the mails inside each folder but when I click on one it's an empty email. I guess this is something to do with them not being mbox format.
Any ideas how I save all my Entourage emails in mbox format and then get them into Mail else I am going to be switching between both Applications every day?

Actually my subject is misleading: It should be "From Entourage on 1 mac to Entourage on another mac." In retrospect I should have posted this message in another thread. Sorry!
From Entourage drag the mailboxes into a folder on the desktop (it works).
Airport the folder over to the the other mac.
Launch Entourage & drag the .eml files (the extension for Entourage mailboxes) from the desktop folder into the Inbox in the Entourage application.
New mailboxes will automatically be created containing all of the emails in the Entourage window of the original computer.
This isn't strictly a Mail & Address book issue, perhaps it should have been in the OS 10.4 thread. In any case I hope this is useful to anyone who needs to xfer emails in such a manner. Resending each one would have been brutal as I'm talking several thousands. For tedious reasons too many to list I realized that I needed the mailboxes and their content transferred into Entourage on the other computer.
    I love "drag and drop."

  • Best way to back up folders and still access in LR

My workflow currently is to do all my corrections to my files while they're on my hard drive. Once I'm finished with that job, I copy the files to two external drives and delete it from my hard drive. With Lightroom, it seems that I should still just copy the folder to my external drives, delete from my hard drive, let LR turn that folder name red, and when I want to look through those images again, click on the red name through LR and point it to the new location. Is this the best way?
I'm often going through old job folders, and they're on a variety of drives (I have 6 currently).
What I love about Bridge is that you could export the cache for each folder and not worry about where I move the folders.

Move the folder to the external drive in the Folders pane and then copy it to the other drive. Lightroom will keep track of it during the move. If you don't have the drive in your Folders list, the hit + beside the word Folders and create a new top level folder on the external drive from there (or simply select the drive itself-if you do this make sure you cancel the import or Lightroom will try import the entire drive). Then move the Folder you want to archive to this newly create top level folder.
If the drive is connected they will remain white. If disconnected, they will go red.
I've found it's quicker to quit Lightroom, reconnect the drive and then restart Lightroom, than to allow Lightroom to find the folders again after you connect with Lightroom active. YMMV.

  • Can I back up folders in my time capsule to another drive?

    Hi all,
As well as using my time capsule to back up my mac I have a folder which contains all my media which I then point itunes at. Due to it's size I can't store it locally on my macbook so this is the only place that it is stored so therefore it is not baked up (not ideal)!
What I would like to know is that if I buy some kind of drive (maybe a WD passport drive) can I set my time capsule to back-up the folder that I store my media in to the attached drive?
If this is not possible I am grateful for any other advice.
    Thanks

First, make sure that the hard drive that will back up your media folder is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Connect the drive to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
Time Machine cannot backup the folder on the Time Capsule to the hard drive, so you will need to use another solution.
You can manually copy the folder from the Time Capsule using drag/drop, or better yet use a commercial application like Carbon Copy Cloner to backup up the folder automatically on a schedule that you specify.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • TM backs up excluded folders - fixed in 10.6.2?

When I used Snow Leopard (10.6 and 10.6.1) I found that Time Machine backed up folders that had been excluded - in Options "Do not back up".
Other people have also reported this problem.
Because off this - and other problems - I reinstalled Leopard.
Has the 10.6.2 update cured this Time Machine problem?
    Thanks for you help.
    Richard

This is not a general problem. We have seen it a few times, in both Leopard and Snow Leopard, due to a corrupted preferences file. Try a "full reset" per #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
