Backing up from the iPod

Hey. I've got a 14 gb harddrive so i've chosen to use the manually update ipod option to add songs. that way, i can add a song to my ipod, delete it from my computer, and not use up the space on my computer. So i have about 50 songs that i've downloaded left on my computer, but i have 600 songs on my ipod, consisting of those 50 songs + songs i imported from all my cds and then deleted from the ipod. now that i'm done, i've split up the songs on my ipod into a timeline of when the songs were added in groups of songs that are less that 650 mb so i can burn them to cds. how do i get a playlist on my iPod, to become a list of songs on a cd? remember, most of these songs are only saved on my ipod, not on my computer. thanks.

I have a similar problem. When I bought the iPod a year ago, I had a 20 GB drive, but a 40 GB iPod. Therefore, I did s similar thing by loading CD music onto the computer (and moving it to the iPod, then deleting the music from the computer. I have a very large number of songs on the iPod that I just couldn't get onto the computer drive. However, now I bought a large disk drive (250 GB), and I would like to get all of the music back from the iPod onto the computer. However, this doesn't seem to work when I try to drag the songs back into the Library.
Is there any way that I can get all of these songs back into my library on the new disk drive? I know I could re-import all of the CDs, but that will take weeks. I need an easier way.
Thanks for your help.

  • When I updated the software on my ipod 4 touch, many podcasts were erased. When I synced the ipod, they were erased from the ipod also. The current itunes does not allow me to go back to these dates (a few months) and re-download? Can I? and prevent this?

When I upgraded the software on my ipod touch4, many podcasts were deleted from itunes. Of course, when I synced the ipod, they were deleted from the ipod as well. Apparently the current version of itunes will not let me go back to these earlier episodes (just a few months), in a podcast that I have been subscribed to, and re-download them. Is there a way to do that? and, how can I prevent this from happening again?

Hey! I had the same problem you did just today when I was trying to get my second iPhone to sync. What you need to do with music or anything extra that you doing you have to creat a second playlist or picture or anything that you would like to use, so that you can add to the second device that you are going to be using. I am not sure if that will help but it helped me out a lot!! Good luck!

  • Music files in my PC's iTunes directory have been moved around, now iTunes' index is not recognizing them and returns error messages. The files have previously been sync'd to my iPod, but when I tried to sync back from the iPod, iTunes on the PC error'd.

I want iTunes to reconstruct its index of my music.
We accidentally moved files around in my <<C:\Documents and Settings\Jordan\My Documents\My Music\iTunes>> directory. We tried to move them back, but anyway, the iTunes program now no longer can find/play the titles that the opened iTunes page/Library displays.
I had previously copied/syncd all my iTunes music to my iPod. I tried syncing back to the PC from the iPod.  No improovement.
At the moment, my dad is on my computer, logged in under his name (with administrative permissions). It seems that looking at my iTunes music under his login is still working OK.
I do not have my music backed up to the "cloud".
    What are my options?

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.
Thank you for letting me know about my contacts! How do I know if I have the contacts app?
Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. I still get the notification that my phone needs to be plugged in and connected to wifi in order to back up to the cloud :-(
How can I sync using USB? Right now when i click on the info tab for my iPhone in my iTunes this is the answer that I get -- I am a little unclear as to what it means.

  • How do you remove voice memos from the iPod after downloading it to iTunes?

first of all, which model of voice recorder is best for the 5G video 30 gb iPod? I have heard of Griffin iTalk and Belkin Universal Microphone Adapter, but i'm leaning towards the iTalk b'c it looks cheaper on Amazon and eBay. does anyone suggest anything along those lines?
and also, after recording voice memos (like class lectures and such) onto the iPod and downloading them to iTunes, how do i remove them from the iPod? do i have to make them a different program file (like windows media player, and not iTunes)?

    Hi King Arthur 2000,
Voice memos can be shared back to a computer in a number of different ways, described in this article -

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

  • Is there a way of copying music from the ipod

my pc got wiped so i need a way of copying music from my ipod to itunes is there a way?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How do I delete photos from the iPod???

I had no problem loading photos on my nano but cannot figure out how to delete them. Everytime I connect the iPod to the computer now, I get a message, "iTunes cannot copy photos to the iPod because all of the albums selected for copying no longer exist." However, those albums do exist. Any suggestions for how to deal with this and ultimately delete photos?

    Lori,
I just got my nano a few days ago, and have been learning more about it. I had the same question you have, but I think I now know the answer.
You can NOT delete specific photos from the iPod. You will need to delete ALL of them and re-synch a folder that has ONLY the photos that you want to display on the Nano.
To do, this go back to Edit->Preferences->iPod->Photos and deselect "Synchronize photos..."
    That will remove ALL photos.
Then you will need to create a folder specifically for the iPod. Put only those photos you want for the Nano into that new folder. Then when you Synchronize the next time, you will select "Copy selected folders only:"
If anyone knows different, let me know. I'm relatively new with Ipods.

  • I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on. After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod. Is there a way to do this

I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on.
After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod.
Is there a way to do this?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.
    good luck
