Backing Up Games On to a Disk

Can I back up my Ipod nano games on to a disk, and if so should I use a CD or a DVD?

Can I back up my Ipod nano games on to a disk
Yes. Search your computer for files with the ipg extension, and back them up in the Finder.
should I use a CD or a DVD?
If they will fit on a CD, use it.

    many thanks Carl.

You must boot from another drive in order to erase the system drive.
Try starting up with Snow Leopard DVD inserted and C depress. That should get you booted from the DVD. Then start Disk Utitlity from DVD and erase the disk then you should be able to install Snow Leopard.
Remember that everything will be removed from the disk when you erase it and install Snow Leopard so backup first.

  • Can I back up iphone to an external disk?

can I back up iphone to an external disk?

You can move your /Home/Music/iTunes folder to the external drive. Then hold down the OPTION key while starting iTunes. In the file dialog locate the /Music/iTunes/ folder on the external drive and click on the Open button. iTunes will now use the library on the external drive. When you sync your data and backups will now be saved on the external drive.

  • HT4314 My iPad was erased and all I cannot connect back to Game Center, it says that my Apple ID has not been used in Game Center. Can I recover my Game Center sessions just by my nickname?

My iPad was erased and when I try to connect back to game center it tells me that it has not been used in Game Center before when I used to have a Game Center nickname and played a lot. Looks like somehow my Apple ID and my Game Center Nickname have been disconnect.
Is there a way to find out what Apple ID is associated to a Game Center Nickname??

Mine did the exact same thing last week.
I did the software update and then the restore and it only restored photos, emails, and iPad settings. It did not restore apps and now my apple ID is no longer associated with my game center ID and I can't figure out how to reconnect them. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

That (an app no longer available) happens sometimes.
Your only way is if you have the appt on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case move it to your iTunes library and sync.

  • How do I copy my time machine back up from a smaller Hard disk to a larger hard disk; so that I can then continue to back up, through Time machine, on the larger hard disk?

I am using time machine for backing up on an external hard disk. This has now become full and every back up results in the deletion of the first back up on the hard drive.
I have bought a larger hard drive now and am trying to copy the back up from the smaller hard drive to the new larger hard drive, using Finder. This is not happening and the message I am getting is
"The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a back up"

    Hello UmeshNB,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are not able to move a backup to another drive. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.
Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive - Apple Support
If it is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article.
If the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended but without journaling, OS X may state that "the volume has the wrong case sensitivity" to be used as a back up disk.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (2000)

How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (yr. 2000). I know that sounds basic but I have very few techno skills. So please "talk down" to me. I had a newer PC (2005) but the hard drive crashed and I am trying to resuscitate this old mac until I can afford to buy a new one. I am in the middle of writing a book (based on Steve Job's life) and must have SOMETHING to write with. Anyone have a better one they can loan me? I am in Maine on the coast. BTW this machine seems to have trouble reading or formatting most CD-disks. Can anyone recommend a type and brand that works well with this model? Thanks for any assistance anyone can render. Here is what I have:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,4
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.9)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          1 MB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.2.8f1

Why do you want to reformat the drive?  Is it because the machine is running slow?
Be sure to backup you important files, like the book, daily.
The cheapest approach would be to try to figure out why the machine is running slow.  Be sure to try safe boot.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
The older versions of ccc were donationware.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes.

I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes. The hard disk was replaced recently in order to gain extra memory. Is there some sort of limit set up from the original hard drive causing this problem?

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

  • HT4972 It says iTunes will not back up games, apps, etc.  Does that mean they will be lost?  I have iPad 2, and would like to get iOS 6.  Can I do that?  Right now it is iOS 4.  If I can get 6, do I have to go to 5 first?

I would like to upgrade my iPad to iOS 6.  It is currently iOS 4.3.5.  Can I do that?  The article from apple says iTunes will not back up games, apps, etc.  Does that mean I will lose them?  Some of them I paid for and don't want to lose.

Yes you can upgrade from 4.3.3 to 6.0.
Your media - apps, games, music, photos, and so are not included in the backup. Your app data, settings, and many other things are included in the backup. After you update the iPad, you should sync with iTunes in order to put all of that content back into the iPad.  This is what I recommend doing - I do it myself every time I update my iPads, or iPod Touch.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.
    Transfer purchases.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

  • Backing up different volumes to different disks

Im going to try to explain this as best that I can.
I've got an original 500GB Time Capsule that I would like to serve as the backup disk for my internal hard drive.
I've also got an external FireWire drive that stores all of my media connected to my iMac that I'd like to be backed up to a 3TB USB disk that is attached to my Time Capsule.
I'm pretty sure I've accomplished the first, I excluded my external FireWire drive from backups to the internal Time Capsule disk in System Preferences. Now, how do I setup the FireWire drive to backup to the USB disk attached to the Time Capsule?
If Time Machine can do it, that'd be fantastic. If not, what software do I need to accomplish this?
PS: never buy Western Digital drives, I've had three fail in 9 months, taking all of my music and movies with them. That's why I'm now a fanatic about backing up.
I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction on this, before another disk starts its ritual "clicking."

What disk is in the 3TB holder?? Unfortunately all the new TC have WD green drives.. those are the most common drives around.
Time Machine cannot have multiple setups..
You will need one of the other backup programs.. pretty well listed in lots of posts.. CCC (carbon copy cloner), SuperDuper, Chronosync. Any of those will do the job.

  • HT4847 Why would I back up games and other apps in iCloud? If I don't back them up (to free storage space) what happens if I lose my phone?  Thanks

So I've never asked a question before and and unsure why I have to re-ask it here but here goes.  I received an e-mail that my iCloud storage id full on my iPhone4. I see that I have every app backed up?  What does that do for me?  Why would I want to back up games, or SiriusXM, things like CNN, Skype apple store? And what happens if i don't back them up and lose my phone?
    Thanks
    Gerri

If one day you need to restore from a backup due to stolen, replaced, or corrupted system on a device, apps not included in the backup will not have their data files restored. I don't turn on a lot of my apps since I don't care about any data they may store (e.g. CNN recent stories or game points).  But I suspect that these apps contribute very little to total backup space. It's the camera roll and apps like Goodreader that store a lot of PDF and other files locally that pad up a backup.

Beware!  When you initialize your boot disk be sure that you specify "Journaled" and not "Case-sensitive, Journaled". Previous OSX installers would check this and give an error message. Mavericks does NOT! If you install using "Case-sensitive" many apps will not work.

When upgrading I didn't back up games and all my characters lost. This was quite a lot of money. How do I get back my original game?

You don't have the game or the game data?
Games can be redownloaded in the App Store app. If the game offers in-app purchases, there is a setting in the game that allows you to redownload past purchases.
If you haven't back up, my first question is why? Even if you get the game back, your progress may not be retained. You may still have hope if the developers save your user progress either on their serers or in Game Center. You can only try and hope that is the case.
