Backing up Garage Band

Hello,
I wanted to find out. What is the definitive way to back up all my project and audio files from Garage Band? I wanted to know where all necessary project/audio files are located.
I am doing a clean install of my OS and wanted to start fresh.

To make sure everything is 100% safe, do a Save As Archive on every project, that puts all needed files within the project itself. Then back them up.

Importing a project back from garage band

I didn´t find a way how to bring a project back to iMovie after making some music and effects to it in garageband.
There is "export to iDVD", "export to QuickTime", but no export to iMovie.
I suppose the solution is something very obvious just behind my blind spot.

If it had to be done in a tricky way, I probably export the music to iTunes, and then import the music from iTunes to iMovie. So that I can make changes to montage.
As far as I know, by exporting to QT the clips are merged to one long clip?

Having trouble installing Garage Band

Alright. I originally installed, or at least thought I did, Garage Band when I went to my System Preferences and clicked on Update Software. Garage Band was one of several Software applications that I updated at that time. However, when I went back into Garage Band (that is, after I installed it) I tried clicking on one of the drum loops but nothing came up. In fact, I was asked to Download Garage Band again. I clicked on the Download button but when my computer did a serch for latest updates it brought up only two applications neither of which were Garage Band. I quit that and restarted my computer - believing that to be the problem. When I went back into Garage Band, once again no drum loops could be chosen. What happen was I clicked on a drum loop and a screen popped up saying that my computer already has downloaded Garage Band (or some such message similar to this), yet I am unable to use any of the loops. Does anyone have any suggestions other than putting in DVD #2 ('cause I have no disks other than the Mac OS X disks)?

well, no, because that IS the solution, and those ARE the discs you use.

Where is ppm 4 on garage band meter

I am trying to set up a presonous firepod but i cannot figure where to set the imput levels has anybody been able to figure where a reference level of 4ppm would be on garageband

Ok here we go. I constructed a file in sound studio 3 of tone starting at 0dbfs and dropping by 1db down to -40db. This file was imported to Garageband. I then connected my pro dat to the cr output of the firepod and set the main output of the firepod to it's highest setting and set the input of the recorder so that it matched the levels of garageband. I hope that this makes sense so far.
The garageband metering is as follows; 0dbf all lights lit, -1 2 yellow, -3 26 green segments, -4 = 23 , -5 = 20 , -6 = 18 , -7 = 16, -8 = 14, -9 = 13, -10 = 11, -11 = 10, -12 = 9, -13 = 8, -14 = 7, -15 = 6, -17 = 5, -18 = 5, -19 & -20 = 4, -21 to -24 = 3, -25 to -28 = 2, -29 to -36 = 1, -37 to -40 = 0 lights. The output of garageband and firepod followed this perfectly.
The dat recording of this file was then played back into garage band via line out of the recorder and by reducing the gain of the channel controls by 2 clicks from the center position I was able to record a copy that matched the original. with the only slight discrepancies at 0 to -2.
so in answer to my own question What is uk ppm 4 on garageband it is 5 green lights and following on from that ppm 5 is 8 bars and ppm6 is 11 bars. I hope that this makes sense. outputs 1 & 2 on the firepod are the same as the main cr out, the cue/ mix is lower I didn't have time to measure the difference. and line out 3,4,5,6,7,8, Didn't work, I am assuming that I have a fault, I haven't had the unit long so I will contact the vendor tomorrow.

Losing connection to usb mic on garage band

When using Garage Band do you find that it periodically loses connection to the USB mic? If I reboot I can sometimes get it back after a few tries. Any other suggestions as rebooting isn't working this time. Is there a way to avoid losing the connection for no reason?
The only thing I did was switch over to Audicity for a minute to record then came back to garage band and the mic was gone, it wont record. No settings were changed.

Yes it is. Shows up everywhere just under preferences in Audio/MIDI it says 0 MIDI detected. But when I take the USB out of the mic and put it back it has the pop up "disconnected USB mic" and same when I do with computer, but still not registering sound. Mute on mic is fine. Nothing changed. Just stopped. This happened to me a few times before and rebooting worked. So far not so much. Nothings working.

If you have installed GB and iMovie on the iPad 1 and synced using iTunes, just sync the those apps to the newer iPad with iTunes. No re purchase necessary with the same iTunes account.

No, it is just saying it is a different iTunes library. If your computer was wiped then the original one is gone and the phone does not recognize the library there.
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss. To use a device with a wiped or new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer. Your Garageband creations are obviously not iTunes Store purchases and should be restored from the backup you make for just this kind of situation.

GarageBand on your Mac or on an iPad?
If you are asking abot GB on a Mac you do the following:
Create a new GarageBand project with a Guitar track
Insert the CD and drag the audio file of the Lesson track or backing track to an empty region below the tracks in the timeline of the GarageBand window.
Plug in a set of head phones and put them on to listen to your backing track.
Plug in your guitar and select the guitar track.
Click on the measure where you want to start your recording and select the guitar track.
Press "record" and start to play.

HT1338 i downloaded new updates to my garage band and when I restarted a warning popped up when i opened my mailbox that the version I have no longer is being supported. Then, for some reason, the app is gone and don't know how to get my email back on my

i donwloaded new updates for my garage band with instruments (which was about 1.2gb) . When I started my email a message popped up that my email is not supported with the version of the email - I was confused and went into applications and tried using the "mail.app" and then I lost my "Mail" app on my dock and now there's no way for me to get my emails or find the app to load back on my dock. Could someone please help me??

If your Mail app is no longer inside your Applications folder, use Spotlight to locate the application. Once you find it, place the application back inside the Applications folder. Then drag the original Mail app to the dock & let go. The Mail app should now appear in the Dock.

Your signature lists both, Mac and iOS device - are you asking about GarageBand on your Mac or your iPhone/iPad?
If you are asking about the upgrade from GarageBand '11 to GarageBand 10.0 on your Mac, the old GarageBand version should still be installed. The installer will have moved GarageBand '11 to a separate folder "GarageBand 6.0.5" in your Applications folder. Open this folder and click "GarageBand". Does this version still see your old projects? If not, type ".band" into the Spotlight searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen. Does that sfind your missing projects?
If you are asking about GarageBand on iPad/iPhone, there it is not possible to restore the previous version after you upgraded. And I do not see, how this upgrade could have deleted your projects. Have they completely vanished, or can you not open them any longer? If your projects have vanished, restore your device from your backup: See: iCloud: Backup and restore overview

I never opened soundtrack pro to edit the track just Garage band....the track just mysteriously saved as half the track.
I am running Lion and I upgraded my Garage band to '11 hoping it would resolve the issue...it didn't. Now I can't find that tracks at all.
The 2 songs having the issue are titled Exotic Yearning and Reunion.
I am in the process of reinstalling the audio content from my discs. I just don't want to run into this again.
Any thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated!

After spending some time reinstalling the soundtrack pro 3 content I opened the full track called Reunion.
It showed back up in Garage Band.*It was the full track and wasn't chopped off until I dragged it onto the project. Then it showed up chopped.
Then I closed Garaged band and opened soundtrack pro 3....The song was again chopped off at the 1:33min mark

Mac OSX 10.6.8 Garage Band '11. This error happens occasionally : I am forced to power-off-on. Pop-up states that error info will be sent to apple. I never hear back from apple. Second prob: Fan sometimes comes on, runs high speed, then slowly stops.

First thing to do is a SMC Reset, you can find instructions at:

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!!
Then try Repairing Disk Permissions, do this at least 2x. You will find this in Disk Utility which is located in Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility.
Finally you may need to uninstall Garage Band and reinstall. You may have to use Pacifist to do this, you can find it at:

I realised that you just need to go to System Preferences > Sound > Input > and uncheck 'Use ambient noise reduction'. mmm answered my own question.
