Backing up HD and Panther upgrading step by step request

new to forum, just want to ensure I do everything right..
I've had and used my iBook for 5 years now and I believe have been running 10.2.8 for the majority of that time.
I have the following items-
-iBook (meets requirements)
-WD My Book Pro edition 250GB
-Panther upgrade discs
and would like to do the following procedures-
-back my current HD onto the external drive (I do not want to lose my music, photos, and mail when I upgrade)
-upgrade to Panther
-use new OS with music, photos, and email intact
I've read through the discussions for tips, but I would appreciate a simplified step by step walk through if someone would be so nice... I have zero experience backing up, running disk repairs and permissions stuff, etc. so any steps that are helpful along the way are appreciated.
also I believe I need to format the WD My Book to run properly in 10.2.8 before I can backup HD prior to upgrading..? sound right..?
forgive any terminology mistakes.
thanks,
scott

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If I may expand on roam's very comprehensive response a bit, just by way of fleshing it out.
You said you have an external HDD, but you did say whether is was Firewire or USB or FW/USB. If you want to make a bootable clone you need firewire.
As roam indicated you will need to format and partition the HDD before you can clone to it. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has excellent advice on partitioning. Now to
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
Now your HDD is ready to accept your clone. Dr. Smoke has a preference for Retropect which I have found diffcult to use. SuperDuper will do an excellent job of making an exact backup of your HDD on the external drive.
Your computer is already connected to the external HDD.
Launch Super Duper
Select the Source (your iBook) and the Destination (external HDD)
Click copy, and confirm.
I notice that you list Panther upgrade disks. Hoeefully they are specific to your computer, or else there can be a problem. To install
Boot from you install disk holding down the "C" key.
When booted, select language.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
After Permissions are repaired Click Repair Disk.
Quit Disk Utility.
Open Installer and begin installation.
Installation option: Upgrade
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install BSD Subsystems.
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please post back with questions, comments or an update on your progress.
Good luck.

  • G4 and panther upgrade. could I? should I?

I purchased a G4 Powerbook in 2003 and never updated the operating system. Over the past year it has been running slower and slower and now can not access many webpages and Safari quits often. So I have a few questions.
Here's my specs (as they read on the side of the box it came in)
    1 GHz/512MB/60G/Combo/BT/APX
Now first question is, I ordered 512MB when I purchased but when I look at 'about' or system specs, it says I only have 256MB of RAM and the other slot is 'empty'. Which is correct? Could I have never received my proper RAM?
Next question, how can I upgrade the operating system and will this improve computer function? I have Mac OS X 10.3.9 now with Safari 1.3.2(v312.6). And should I upgrade? Could it cause more problems than solutions? I'm not a tech expert, so I'm concerned I could cause more bad than good.
I mostly use the computer for internet/email, word processing and running Adobe CS1 (mostly photoshop).
Ok, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome To  Discussions Otist
"...has been running slower and slower..."
How much free space is available on the 60 GB HD?
    Do you run routine maintenance?
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
"...can not access many webpages and Safari quits often."
The version of Safari that Panther supports is too outdated for newer Web technology.
    "...only have 256MB of RAM..."
Possibly the extra stick is not being recognized.
You could run the Apple Hardware Test or use the utility Rember to test it, but I'm not sure what that will tell you if indeed the second slot is empty.
You may have to physically open the case to make that determination
I have very limited knowledge about RAM and Hardware in general.
Another member will augment my respone.
"...upgrade the operating system and will this improve computer function?"
I believe so if you clean up the present system and Increase the RAM to at least 1 GB.
You may also want to consider a larger Hard Drive
    "...should I upgrade?"
    Absolutely!
The PowerBook G4/ 1 GHz will support the Leopard System Requirements.
The Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.), Apple retail stores, Apple resellers, and some Online vendors.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Leopard is on DVD.
The disc should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.

Once Leopard 10.5.x is installed, you can use the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update.
You may also find this Leopard Installation and Setup Guide PDF useful.
The posted RAM System Requirement, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
As a precaution, before upgrading the OS, you should create a reliable backup of the entire system, or at least, any data you do not wish to lose or corrupt.
In addition to the Archive & Install procedure, there is also a Simple Upgrade, or an Erase & Install option.
Review the info here About Installation Options.
Specifically; "About Upgrade to Mac OS X
Upgrading to Mac OS X takes a little longer than installing it on a volume without Mac OS X, but it is the least intrusive way to install--most of your existing settings and applications are left untouched during an upgrade. In other words, you won't have to configure a lot of settings afterwards."

  • Am preparing to replace my hard drive and also upgrade to snow leopard.  I've already backed up to an external hard drive via time machine.  Should I just follow instructions via manual, or is there some other literature available to help?

Haven't used this forum for several years,   all looks new.  Am going to install 750 GB scorpio black hard drive,  while I'm at it,  will upgrade to 10.6.  Any step by step info available beside the manual?   Did upgrades with my old G4 and it wasn't that difficult.  Have not worked on my macbook pro.  any info would be appreciated.

If you value your sanity, don't upgrade both things at once. Buy a new hard drive, format it, clone your existing drive to it, boot from it externally to make sure it's bootable, and then install it in your MBP. Use it long enough to make sure all is well. Then and only then, upgrade your OS on it. If anything goes wrong with your installation/upgrade, you have the original hard drive that you can clone onto the new drive to get back to where you were before the aborted upgrade.
If you do major hardware and software upgrades at the same time (i.e., without careful testing in between) and anything goes amiss, you may not have any idea which upgrade is responsible for the problem or even when the problem began. When making big changes, make them one at a time.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

    Hey there Ashleyehall,
Thank you for your question. It sounds like iTunes is unable to complete a backup of your iPhone. I found this article for you to help troublehsoot the issue named:

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard?  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

  • Upgrade Steps - sql server 2005 and Essbase 9.2.0

Currently we have Essbase, EIS in AIX and Web Analysis in Windows 9.2.0 on SQL Server 2000 in Windows server as repository. We are planning to upgrade Essbase, EIS and Web Analysis to 11.1.1. At this point we wanted to upgrade our environment step by step. We are not buying new servers. First move the sql repository to 2005 and then upgrade to 11.1.1. Our data resides in another SQL server 2000 server and we use sql load rules to load the data to essbase. Is it possible to update the SQL repository to 2005 while having the data in 2000, so we continue the production environment? What are the steps required for that?
    Any input appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Daphne.

Since most of what happens is through ODBC (especially for loading data) I think you would just have to have the proper drivers in place to talk the the SQL server instances.

  • Ask your question.I'm trying to upgrade my OS in my iPhone. In iTunes, I backed everything up, then hit upgrade. All I get is This version of iTunes is the current version. How do I override that and download OS 5.0?

I'm trying to upgrade my OS in my iPhone. In iTunes, I backed everything up, then hit upgrade. All I get is This version of iTunes is the current version. How do I override that and download OS 5.0?

    You cannot override it.
What version of itunes do you have?
You need itunes 10.1 or higher to get ios 4.2.1 which is the latest available for the iphone 3G.

  • I can not upgrade the iOS on my phone, nor sync the phone because the process starts with backing up the phone which always hangs up at the backing up stage and then will not allow further progress.

I can not upgrade the iOS on my phone, nor sync the phone because the process starts with backing up the phone which always hangs up at the backing up stage and then will not allow further progress.
And for this I guess that it is the backing up of my Podcasts - which are free downloads that causes the hang up. These are items that I have played and synced before without issues. I am thinking this way because these are Podcasts that I used to play but sundenly would not play on my iPhone. Each time I try to play anyone of them it generates the message - this movie could not be played.
I am scared of atempting a system restore because I guess I may lose my SMS for the past two months. Please approach the solution from this point of view.
    Thanks

It may have something to do with one of your backup files that has been corrupted before.

Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!
