Backing up Hyper-V Guests on Windows 8/8.1 Hosts?

Hi,
is there any way to get DPM to backup Hyper-V Guests hosted on Win8 (or 8.1) machines? Requirement comes from developer workstations that have local VMs for sharepoint development.
Unfortunately, DPM doesn't seem to "see" the HV Component when trying to select a win8 machine as a server.
Thanks, Martin

DPM 2012 can protect ONLY files at Windows 8 (8.1).

    Brief background:
I'm doing some lab environment testing with Storagecraft Shadowprotect backup for a client.  We are backing up Hyper-V guest operating systems.  For busines continuity, the backups can be spun up to Oracle VirtualBox VMs in the event of disaster,
but the backups can also be restored via their Headstart Restore tool to a VHD or VHDX.  Right now, I'm using a Windows 7 x64 VM for the test backup.
Here is my current problem (for the moment, forget about the Storagecraft part).  Once the VM is restored, I've lost access to the keyboard via Hyper-V console (the mouse does work, this allowed me to run the
on-screen keyboard so I could see what was going on, and then test via RDP).  I can RDP to the VM and use the keyboard and mouse.  I have a few unknown devices in the Device Manager that weren't there before.  The processor also has a
    "splat" (yellow triangle, exclamation point).
At this point, I don't want to troubleshoot the "why" (that will be another step), but I do wish to find out how to reinstall the necessary drivers to get the system working.  I tried reinstalling the Hyper-V Integration Services, but the
    VM says they are already installed.  These can't be uninstalled via Control Panel.  I've tried mounting the Hyper-V Integration Services and doing a right-click "Repair" using the msi in the Support folder (both the x86 and the amd64);
when I do this, it reports that the action is only valid for products that are currently installed.  The same happens for an uninstall.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get keyboard support back?
Everyone gets everything he wants. Me, I wanted to be a sysadmin. And for my sins --they made me one.

    Hi Sir,
    >> I have a few unknown devices in the Device Manager that weren't there before.  The processor
also has a "splat" (yellow triangle, exclamation point).
For troubleshooting , please try to use Windows server backup to backup/restore VM to narrow it down .
In addition  please try to use installation media to perform "in-place upgrade" to "repair"
    that VM  .

  • Windows server 2012 R2 DC (Hyper-V Guest OS) DNS error event id 4013 in log after installing KB2975719 and/or KB2995388

    Hi,
I just freshly installed a guest OS Windows 2012R2 on a Hyper-V 2012R2 server. Installed lots of updates and did many reboots, after that I installed the AD component. Couple of days later I'm having trouble with a RemoteDesktop server joining the domain.
After some research I see in the DNS log the following message:

I did a restore from an earlier point, recreated the ActiveDirectory, but messages still coming in DNS log. I started from scratch with installing a new guest OS Windows 2012R2, directly after loging in first time, I installed AD component, and
give  the server a reboot. and got the events below that looks normal:

The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical DNS
data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet
Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed.

    Hi Steven,
Would you please tell us that is the event 4013 logged continuously?
If this event is only logged after reboot or restart DNS service, then it is a normal behavior.
As we can see Event 4, which indicates that the DNS zones have been loaded successfully.
In addition, if Event IDs 4523 and 4524 are being logged after the Event 4013, then there is no problem with DNS service.

  • VSS timeouts on Hyper-V guest, Exchange Replication Service, CU5

I'm having a problem with a Hyper-V guest that is running Exchange 2013 CU5.  I will say I have had issues with this VM since installing CU5.
Note:  I am doing a backup from within the VM guest, not from the host.
The scheduled backup takes a long time to complete, an entire weekend to backup 150GB to an ISCSI disk.  In addition the CPU time is very high (58%) while this is happening.  Attempting to open the backup manager window consistently makes the CPU
time hit 99%.  When this happens Outlook clients will fail.  When backup manager opens it will continually say "Reading data; please wait..."  If the backup manager happened to already been open, the backup job will say "Volume
    1 0% of 4 volumes."
The processes taking up the CPU time are Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service  (24%), Microsoft Block level backup service (62%) and virtual disk service (12%).  Memory use always hovers around 65%.  If I attempt to kill the processes with
task manager, there is no change.  If I use the kill executable it will say the process is not running.  I cannot stop the corresponding service either.  I cannot stop the backup.  I cannot query vss writer status.  I cannot restart
the ISCSI service (device in use.)  Restarting the NAS that contains the ISCSI target does nothing.  The only recourse is to restart the server.
If I restart the server and start a backup fairly soon after, the backup completes normally, in about an hour.  During a normal backup CPU usage is at about 30%.  The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service runs at 0% CPU time as well as the virtual
disk service.  The Microsoft Block Level Backup Engine runs at 10% CPU time.  The scheduled backup is set to start at 9:30pm.  I have also tried changing backup times.  If I restart the server at 4 am and do not run a manual backup, the
    scheduled backup performs poorly.
After some digging I find these errors:

As you can see the errors happen almost immediately after the backup starts.
In addition the following VSSwriters show a last error "timed out"
    Microsoft Exchange Writer
    Com+ RegDB Writer
    Shadow Copy Optimization Writer
    Registry Writer
I will add also the following issues I have been experiencing ever since installing CU5:
1 Version buckets threshold easy reached.  Had to modify threshold and set limits on email size. Sometimes still happens.
2 After a restart of the server, the server may have no, or limited connection to the network.  It may or may not have an exclamation point on the network icon.  If there is no exclamation point, it can ping other network resources, but inbound requests
and pings, will fail.  The event log shows that the network should be available while booting, but it's not since it cannot communicate with active directory.  The fix for this is to disable/enable the network adapter and then all is well.
I really need some help figuring this out.  Again, never had an issue with this server prior to Exchange 2013 CU5 being installed.

    Hi,
The reason I think it is Exchange related, is that from the error message it mentioned:
A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x00000000
And then it indicated it is "Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer".
The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance 7a465f3f-25ba-45b2-952a-870a6ddc2f2b) failed with error 80070020 when preparing for a backup
    Later I found this article:
How to turn on the Exchange writer for the Volume Shadow Copy service in Windows Small Business Server 2003
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/838183/en-us
It mentioned that with turned on Exchange writer, we will fail to do system state backup and Exchange backup at a same time:
The Exchange writer may cause conflicts with the information store backup feature of the Backup utility. The information store backup feature uses online streaming to back up the Exchange databases. If the Exchange writer is registered, the Backup utility
may log errors if you try to back up the system state and the Exchange information store at the same time. (For example, the Backup utility may log Event ID 8019.)
In order to confirm if it is the cause, please test to:
    1. Create a backup-once task to backup only a simple file - this is a quick test to confirm if Windows Server Backup is fine or not.
    2. A second backup-once task to do a system state backup without any exchange related information.
    3. If both failed, please test to disable Exchange Writer and redo test 1&2.
It will take us some time on doing these tests. The reason is to figure out if it is Exchange related or not. I'll continue discuss with you if any new clue is found.

  • Hyper-V guest NICs fail

    So I got two new servers a Dell R620 and a R720 running Hyper-V on Windows 2012 R2 all clients on them are 2012 or 2012 R2.
All NICs are Broadcom NetXtreme, 2 quad port per server, I am currently running 15.6.0.10 drivers with 7.6.15 firmware on the R720 and 16.2.0.4 drivers and 7.8.16 firmware on the R620. No guest NICs are teamed.
In the last 2 weeks I had two guest NICs in hyper-v (with a few days between) on the R620 and 1 on the R720 fail to a point where the NIC cant communicate with the network, getting a 169.x.x.x IP address. I delete the NIC in the Virtual Switch Manager, re-add
it and everything is fine again. I don't allow the managing OS to share the network adapter, for the most part, I use 1 NIC per VM.
I recall this happening back with Hyper-V 2008 R2 as well, but generally at the time of a driver update or some sort of change. These Hyper-V hosts have no received any drivers, firmware or Microsoft updates anywhere around the time of these failures.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
" In the last 2 weeks I had two guest NICs in hyper-v (with a few days between) on the R620 and 1 on the R720 fail to a point where the NIC cant communicate with the network, getting a 169.x.x.x IP address.  "
It seems that there is a DHCP server in your LAN.
I would recommend you to do :
    1. check if there is any new driver for your NICs
    2. check whether mac address conflict exists .
    3. disable the "save power " mode of your NIC

  • Hyper-V Guest Cannot Find Host Domain Controller 2012 R2

Poweredge T320 server as a Domain Controller,  file server and an EXCHANGE 2010 server. There are no other servers at the site.
DHCP is from the firewall.   The DC and the file server will be on the host.

2012 R2 server cannot see the Domain Controller on the host 2012 R2 server.
The Active Directory is requesting to be promoted to a Domain Controller.
I have a logical or physical error in the installation.

I believe I should have only one  Domain Controller in this application.
After the Hyper-V guest can see the host domain controller I will install EXCHANGE 2010.

  • Router cannot see Hyper-V Guest MAC address

    Greeting,
I have been trying to build a server on Hyper-V, on a host running Windows Server 2012 R2, and a wireless adapter is used.
A virtual switch was created as external, connected to the host's wireless adapter.
The guest OS is Debian 7, and the problem is it's unable to use DHCP to connect to the internet.
I have to manually specific an IP address and the subnet mask in order to access the internet in the Guest OS, say 192.168.0.50. And I set port forward to this IP for external connection to the guest, but then sometimes I cannot connect; without doing anything
it restores the connection after a while. At the same time I am keeping the MSRDP connection to tthe host so the host has not lost connecting to the internet.
When the server on Guest is not accessible from the web, I can still connect to the server within the host machine by typing the lan IP of the guest: 192.168.0.50
On checking the router, I found that two IP address 192.168.0.50 (Guest OS) and 192.168.0.15 (Host) are sharing the same MAC address (of the wireless card). It means the MAC address of the Guest OS is not seen by the router, and I suppose this is the root
    for the instability.
Would you have any ideas about the situation, and suggested solution?
    Thank you.

    An update to my issue:
Just realized the possible cause: the (freaking) router is dropping inactive machine.
Basically the DHCP issue is not solved, but it doesn't seem to be a cause after all, as long as I manually assign the IP it works, even having the  2 IPs with the same MAC on the ARP table on router. (Host connection drop has to be further investigated).
As I found that the loss of connection actually happens after a while I don't touch the web server on VM, the longer I leave it idle the more likely I cannot connect to it again. The situation is like a prolonged loading when trying to access a website,
where sometimes you can connect after a while, or you never.
What's weird is, if I somehow manage to connect to the idle VM server by multiple attempts, and that after I have restored the connection, I can reconnect to the server from another computer very quickly without any significant loading time.
On some quick searches, I found someone using Linksys router is suffering from a similar situation as I do:
    http://serverfault.com/questions/522448/application-request-routing-on-a-hyper-v-guest-intermittently-stops
So what I can try are basically 3 ways
-Change the router, not viable as I don't own it.
-Insert a wireless bridge in between
-Do something with Debian, making it periodically generate network request to the internet to keep the connection alive
Any ideas about my observation, and maybe possible solutions?
    Thank you for reading.

  • Hyper-V Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 VM cannot define static IP address

    Hi,
I have setup a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2. It has only the Hyper-V role installed. The physical server has two NICs that I have teamed with Hyper-V port as the load balancer. I have created 1 VM on this Hyper-V server that is a
Generation 2 VM running Windows Server 2012 R2. It has one NIC in the guest OS that is connected to the Hyper-V switch.
Now the Guest OS works fine and network connectivity is great when using DHCP but when I configure a static IP address in the Guest OS all network connectivity is lost even with correct IP configuration. Is this something to do with a Gen 2 VM?
A little more background - We have another Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same NIC teaming in the Host OS, on this Hyper-V there is a GEN 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a static IP configured which is working normally.
    Any help is appreciated.

I have resolved the issue. It appeared the hard IP phones were using the same IP range that I was attempting to use so of course the VM could not use the IP Address. Silly mistake.
Elliot, I suggest you mark as Helpful and Answer any responses above that were helpful to you in getting this issue resolved. This is how the forums work.
For example, if a response mentioned "VM generation has no effect on the vNIC." and that pointed you in the direction of troubleshooting networking instead of wasting your time looking into VM generations, that may be considered "Helpful"
If a response mentioned "Make sure you're using valid IPv4 settings" and indeed you ended up having invalid IP settings such as a duplicate IP, this may be considered "Answer"

  • 2008 r2 hyper-v guest with static IP always looses network connectivity after every restart - no problem with DHCP

    Hello,
We are running 2008 R2 domain with one physical DC and other running in VM on Hyper-V host (2008 R2 Standard). The host has 4 NICs and is configured to use one physical NIC for itself (management) and the hyper-v guest is configured to use another dedicated/physical
NIC (through microsoft virtual switch) just for itself.
I noticed that after setting the hyper-v guest with a static IP address all works fine only until guest restart. When the guest boots up the IP address is still configured correctly in IPv4 properties, but there is no network connectivity at all and in fact
the guest shows running APIPA config in ipconfig /all output. That situation continues until I remove the virtual NIC from hyper-v guest, remove the virtual switch from dedicated NIC on host and then reconfigure it (using same settings as they were). very
    annoying.
For time being I switched the virtual DC (problematic hyper-v guest) to a DHCP IP and configured DHCP server (running on physical DC machine, not on hyper-v host) to store a reservation for the hyper-v guest so it always gets the same "static"
    IP configuration.
Is there some kind of a problem/bug with using static IP on (2008 R2) hyper-v guests? is there a hotfix for static IP config in hyper-v guest environment?
both 2008 R2 OSes (host and guest) are up to date with all updates (synced with Microsoft, not WSUS).

OK, I'm not at the office now, but took my time to test out the restart scenarios on problematic virtual guest remotely.
No dice, same as it was, everything works fine after guest has IP configured in DHCP mode (IP reservation of 192.168.1.5 for specific MAC address) and it doesn't work after restart in static IP mode (same address, works before restart of guest).
I also took "arp -a" outputs at each step from host server and that was always saying there is only a single host (192.168.1.5 = VDC = problematic virtual guest) assigned to that IP address and always with same MAC, so that pretty much rules out
ARP/MAC troubles and no issues with switches/routers getting spoofed. Problem is most likely with the virtual guest (WS2008R2) or within the host running same OS.
    Here are outputs:
    A) VDC has IP configured in DHCP mode - always same, survives through restart (all works)

Throughout the testing, the hyper-v host IP configuration and IPconfig output was always staying same.
The Network Connection #2 is the only one the host uses (not shared with hyper-v guests).
The Network Connection #4 is assigned to Microsoft Virtual Switch hence why it doesn't show up in results, like below:

On Monday I will install more test guests in Hyper-V host (WS2008R2), in variety of flavors like 7x64, 8.1x64, ws2012r2, and see if they show similar problems with static IP configuration when utilizing a dedicated NIC from host server.
Don't get me wrong, I can live with virtual DC running on DHCP IP reservation (which is based on MAC), because the virtual DC pretty much requires a physical PDC (hosting also DHCP in my network) to be present for safety reasons ... however I prefer a static
IP configuration on all servers, hence my question and surprise why it doesn't work.

  • Hyper-v Role in Windows Server 2012 foundation and Essentials

    Hello,
I have seen that the two low cost version of Windows Server 2012 essential and Foundation) will not support hyper-v. Can you please tell me what it means exactly :
Can you please tell me what is possible :
-The server can not be installed as a hyper-v  guest (probably yes)
-The hyper-v role can not be installed on the server (so I have to rely on vmware)?
    - Hyper-v role can be installed but there is no free license included with the server.
    Thank you
    Marc

I suppose then, you would have to install Windows 8 and Hyper-V as your guest or core.
Then run your Server 2012 Foundation under Win8.  which has 512GB Memory Limit.
It seems asinine that you cannot install this role on Foundation, but seemingly you could work around it with Win8.  (Or Sun Virtual Box (free) (or VmWare(Free).
So load up a dozen Win8Pro virutal sessions on that Win8 VirtualBox with up to 512GB Memory and Create your own Ghetto Remote Desktop Server with Foundation and Windows 8.   ;)
What good is it if your can't run Hyper-V and Remote desktop services?  Those are the two apps small business need most.  But Microsoft strips it out, calls it a DEAL  (Essentials and Foundation) , yet if you want the good stuff, you're gonna
have to buy Server 2012 Standard anyhow, + the CALs.
So you are hooked into this "deal" by Microsoft Special Offer.   Its special alright, because you get to buy it twice.  The stripped down version that come with your server, then the full version when you discover Foundatoin and Essentials gives
you AD, and thats it.  Nothing Else.  No "deal"
    Remember:
All you get with Foundation or Essentials is AD and Group Policy.
You cannot load RDP on Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange on a DC, or Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange and RDP on the same box.
You cannot have Remote Web Apps if you load RDP on your DC.
You cannot win with Microsoft.  No worthwhile "deal" has ever come out of the city of Redmond.
The internet is a one-way money pipeline to Microsoft.
Its three times the work, three times the cost and requires three servers licenses to do with 2012, what you could do with one 2008R2 license.
Might as well purchase 2 Server 2013 Standard Editions if you want:
    1.) Active Directory
2.) Remote Desktop and Remote Apps
    3.) Your own Exchange Server
You are better off installing a NAS if all you need is a file server.
Why bother with Foundation or Essentials?  Its a "Gimmick-ware"

  • Backing Up Hyper-V Virtual Machines with dynamic vhdx disks attached

    Hi folks.
Can i  make an online backup
for a virtual machine that has a hard drive
    attached  dynamic vhdx running on
    windows server 2012 r2?
    Regards

I think we should try to duplicate this using diskshadow.exe to create a persistent snapshot and manually copy a VM.
    1) On the hyper-V host open an administrative command prompt.
    2) Run diskshadow.exe - and after it starts enter the following commands as written except for the drive letters used:
       Diskshadow> Set Verbose on
       Diskshadow> Set context Persistent
Diskshadow> Add Volume X: ALIAS xvol    (Where
X: is the drive letter of the volume containing the Hyper-V guests you want to make a snapshot for)
       Diskshadow> Begin backup
       Diskshadow> create
       Diskshadow>end backup
       DiskShadow> Expose %xvol% S:              (Where S: is a free drive letter)
    3) Now Go into explorer and copy out VM's from the S: Drive which is the live shadow copy and see if that duplicates your problem.
When you are done, delete the shadow copy in diskshadow using the following command.
       DiskShadow>Delete shadows exposed S:

  • Tabs only open in a new window. Ctl T opens a new window NOT a new tab help-last update this problem started. How do I set FF back to open tabs in 1 window

Tabs only open in a new window. Ctl T opens a new window NOT a new tab help-last update this problem started 2 days ago. How do I set FF back to open tabs in 1 window?
There is no plus sign and going into optins and changing settings has not worked. I have uninstall FF and reinstall-keeping my personalization-and that was no help.
Right clicking on FF Icon to open a new tab, or going up to FF drop down tab and clicking on new tab both do not work.
Help everything opens a new window not a new tab. there seems to be no way to reset this or to chose a different optin. I just downloaded new tabs at end addon and it didn't do a thing.

as a first troubleshooting step - does it work like normally when you open & run firefox in [[Safe Mode|safemode]] by pressing the shift key while you open firefox (all other instances have to be closed before)...

  • HT4009 I made a in app purchase on a game and it never took, when I went back and tried it again a window popped up that said I have already purchased this item but has not been downloaded yet? How do I download it when there is not a option to download?

I made a in app purchase on a game and it never took, when I went back and tried it again a window popped up that said I have already purchased this item but has not been downloaded yet? How do I download it when there is not a option to download?

    Hi Dave_warr,
I would suggest restarting the iPad and see if the download resumes.
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
Resuming downloads from an iOS device
From the Home screen, tap the iTunes icon.
For iPhone/iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.
    Click the "OK" button.
Click the Resume or Resume All button to start the download.
If you don't see the application to download it, then follow these troubleshooting steps:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If the app does not appear in your list of purchases, then contact the iTunes Store for help:
How to report an issue with your iTunes Store, App Store, Mac App Store, or iBookstore purchase
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • I backed up my ipod during a windows backup.  how do i find those ipod files(not itunes) in the windows backup files? i've tried searching and i can't find

i backed up my ipod during a windows backup.  how do i find those ipod files(not itunes) in the windows backup files? i've tried searching and i can't find

so i plugged in my ipod and it asked if i wanted to backup the files before restoring it.
Do you mean iTunes asked if you wanted to backup files before restoring? If so the it is in the location I posted. You don't need to navigate to the backup. Once your restore your iPod it will ask if you want to restore from a backup and present you with the backups made before hand.
To restore information from a backup, use one of the following methods after connecting your iOS device to the computer with which you normally sync:
-Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.
    Or
-Open the iOS device's Summary tab. There are two ways to access this:
-Click the device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper right corner. The device button will then be visible.)
-From any view in iTunes, click the View menu and select Show Sidebar. Select your iOS device in iTunes under Devices.
    -Click the Restore Backup button.
