Backing up imovie files?????

I thought this would be as easy as dragging the imovie files into a burn folder but everytime I try and do this it will only create a "shortcut" of the file. I have some sizeable projects that I want to burn on dvd and be able to work with them later, is it possible to do this?

This is intentional; the actual files will be burned onto the disk. Click here for more information.

has anyone developed a good process for backing up iMovie event video on an external drive, but still working on those events in iMovie?  Or do you have to copy the event back to the hard drive to work in the event?

Pad2, the new iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats
    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Here's one way to install. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • Taking iDVD files back to iMovie

How do I take a iDVD project (that was first done in iMovie) back into iMovie to edit a new project? My kids did a school project in iMovie 2 years ago and want to redo it. But we finalized the iDVD and only have the final DVD and the fiels associated with that DVD. What files do you need to take from a final iDVD project to import back into iMovie. The idea is the kids will edit the old iMovie project and then send back to iDVD to burn a completed new DVD. Thanks for any help.

But we finalized the iDVD and only have the final DVD and the fiels associated with that DVD
Do you mean you have all the files used to create that iDVD project (in which case you would still have all the movie clips) or do you mean you only have the iDVD project file (which is useless if you moved or deleted content used in that project).
If all you have is the DVD, you can use something like DVDxDV to extract movie files from the DVD.

    Hello there,
It sounds like you have a video file you exported from iMovie that you would like to import back into the program. Depending on the version of iMovie the process is a bit different so choose the correct article for your version:
iMovie '11: Import video from movie files

  • How do I move a project from an external drive back into Imovie

I recently bought an Iomega external hard drive to store documentary movies so that I wouldn't jam up my Imac's free space. However, after I moved an imovie/idvd project to it, and wanted to make changes, I could not move the project back into the Imac's drive. (It also would not burn from the external, giving me a multiplex error) When I tried to move the movie back into Imovie on the Imac it said Quicktime couldn't parse it. I saw various posts about parsing, but not about specifically about moving a project from an external drive. Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems to me that I should be able to move a project back and forth without that much trouble.

Sounds like you have a DVD format (MPEG-2) and not an iMovie Project file.
The key phrases are "multiplex" and "parse". Both suggest MPEG-2 format when opened in QuickTime. It would also throw an error -2048 message if MPEG-2.
But another issue could be the file format of the external drive. Most ship pre-formatted for the Windows OS's but a Mac user should format using HFS+ (and others). If you didn't format the drive before moving the large iMovie Project onto it it may have become severely fragmented if the external used FAT 16 or FAT 32 (very common) formats. They have a 2 or 4 GB file size limit, respectively and would have made your Project unreadable when moved back and forth.
Use the Disk Utility app to find out the format of your external drive.

  • Advice needed for network storage for iMovie files

    Hi
I'm after some advice as to what a good solution for a school is to store iMovie files. I don't have a lot of Mac experience, however do manage the schools PC network and have a pretty good understanding of the general issues.
The schools media suite has 7 Macs (3 reasonable G5's). Because some units are better than others they don't want to assign students to certains PCs (which could allow them to work with files locally).
To date they have been storing all the iMovie files on a old G4 server, however this is running out of space and we want to provide a longer term solution for them.
When I say storing the "movie files" I mean the whole iMovie project -- the project file and all the audio and video clips. These are all stored on the network so the students can open them from any mac. Which has been working (more or less) ok from the old G4 just the disk space is the big issue.
We have tried using a Lacie Raid NAS device for the movie files but this had problems with the Mac extended character set in file names and wouldn't always open or allow saves to the device.
We have also tried using the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ (using raid) which supports AFP and OS X and seems to work ok and faster in general than the Lacie device. However playback from the Netgear causes the video/audio playback to stop and start. I'm not sure this is the same stutter issue that has been discussed here since if I copy the iMovie file to the local disk it will play back ok. It appears to an issue of bandwidth. The Macs are all 100Mb, the Netgear is 1Gb, which is connected to a Dlink 1Gb switch.
Mostly the students movies are quite short (3-5min) but the project files have lots of clips and range in size from a few Gig to up to around 8Gb.
I can't figure how an old slow G4 can out perform a new 1Gb NAS Raid device.
They are using iMovie06, would upgrading to 08 help?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,

welcome Simon to the  boards ...
definitely NOT.. iM08 has a very different file management concerning projects.. it offers a Library of ALL (=tons of gigs) imports ever ('Events'), and keeps Projects and Events in different locations; to delocate those makes the use of socalled SymLinks neccessairy...
plus, iM08 has high demands on the grafic-card of a Mac, so read the specs carefully before investing...
iMHD6 is a bit 'iffy' concerning drive's format.. as long as you're using 'MacOsFormatted' drives, easy does it ..
so, why not buying an external, firewire-connected housing for 3-4 standard (=cheap) ATA-drives, each 500GB (=cheap), connect that to goo' ol' reliable G4 and done?

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

  • How do i find iMovie file i moved to external hard drive

okay, i'm obviously ********.  I moved all of my imovie files to an external hard drive and i can't seem to find them all to move to the main hard drive and be there when i open iMovie.  I have to have the external on to see them but I think this may be why i'm having weird issues with the sounds in my project.
is there specific imovie files i need to put back?

in case i wasn't clear. i moved all of my files to external hard drive to reformat the drive.  i thought i moved everything back to the main drive but i still have to have the external drive on to work on my project. i am unable to adjust volumes of sound files in my imovie project.

  • Editing iMovie files with Adobe Premiere Elements for Windows

    Hi,
My 12 year old asked for Final Cut Pro for Christmas to edit movies he takes on his iPod touch and iPad. However, he has a Windows-based desktop. As I understand it, Final Cut Pro is not a Windows-based program. I thought we could get him Adobe Premiere Elements for Windows, but will he be able to manipulate his iMovie files easily? I have no idea what format the iMovie files are. Will he be able to download them to his Windows desktop, edit his movie, and then upload back to his Apple devices? Thanks!

    clue
Bottom line: Making distinction between video editor project files and formats of exports.
    Details...
The iPod touch and iPad typically offer video files H.264.mov or H.264.mp4 formats. This is not a Mac versus Windows matter because we are talking exports (.mov and .mp4) not project files from a video editing project.
He should be able to take his iPod or iPad device videos and edit them in Premiere Elements. And, then he should be able to return them to his device(s).
But, many of these devices record video with a variable frame rate (depending on the lighting conditions to a great extent). Premiere Elements (any version) can have problems with such video to the extend (a) out of sync audio (b) cannot import file at all. I have a iPod Touch 4th Generation and have no Premiere Elements importing/editing/exporting problems with my 1280 x 720 @ 30 progressive frames per second (H.264.mov) video from that iPod.
Below is an excerpt of Premiere Elements 13 exports that might be of interest...

The ideal way would be to look at the tryout of Premiere Elements 13 before purchase. If not possible, then, if purchased from Adobe direct, there
should be an opportunity for money back within 30 days of purchased. If purchased from an authorized reseller, then the refund/return would be according to the policy of the retailer.

  • Can not open iMovie files

I have a strange problem. I just got a new Intel iMac. I moved all my files over tot he new system, no problem. On my old system, I kept some files out side of the users folder so my wife and I can both access them (iTunes, iDVD, iMove, etc)
I have been running like this years with out issue. But the new system seems to have problems with this arrangement. The problem is limited to iMovie, and limited to my wife account (not scoring any point here ).
I keep these “shared” project files in users folder, but outside of any home folder. So the folders look like this.
    ~\users\iMove
    ~\users\iDVD
    ~\users\iTunes
Also under users are our individual home folders
    ~\users\sunil
    ~users\tish
When my wife tries to open a iMove file she gets an error that the disk is full or she does not have permission to write to this folder. This only happens with iMovie files, the others open fine. From my login I can open iMovie files, as well as other files.
I have checked the permission on the users folder, the iMovie folder and she seems to have rights to read and write to them. Additionally we are both Admins on the system.
Here is what I have tried already (none resolved the issue)
    • Repaired permissions on the volume
    • Verified permission, she has read/write to the folder as well are the files she is trying to open, she is also an admin.
    • Optimized the system (onyx)
    • Reapplied permission, including subfolders.
    • Moved files to another location.
    • Moved files into her home folder
    • Moved files into the shared folder.
    My Config
    Intel iMac 1.5GB
    250GB HDD (125GB) free
    OSX 10.4.7
    iLife 06
    Any ideas?

Sorry, I don't have any firm answers for this situation, but I can offer some guesses.
iMovie seems particularly sensitive to permission issues. Problems can occur when moving projects from startup disk to startup disk, as you've apparently done.
The issues are complicated by the fact that an iMovie 5/iMovie 6 project is a package, a special kind of file that behaves like a folder. The package contains other files and folders.
When you use the Get Info window to assign permissions to the package, the new permissions aren't necessarily applied to the contents of the package. Those items retain their old permission settings, which I suspect is what causes the problem for iMovie. (The Get Info window lets us apply new permissions to the CONTENTS of a folder, but that doesn't work on a package.)
To change permissions inside the package, try this:
    • In the Finder, create a duplicate of the project. Work on the copy.
    • Select the name of copy and remove the suffix ".iMovieProject" from the name. Tell the dialog window that opens to accept the change. The iMovie project icon will disappear, replaced by the normal Finder folder icon. The project will now behave like a folder.
    • Select the folder and use the Get Info window to set permissions for the folder, then press the "Apply to enclosed items" button to apply those permissions to the items it contains.
    • Re-select the name of the folder and add back the suffix ".iMovieProject". When you accept the change, the folder icon will change back into an iMovie project icon.
    • Try opening the project in iMovie. With luck, everything will now work.
When using an external disk to store projects, another solution is to use the Get Info window (for the disk) to set the disk to ignore permissions.

Guy in store was wrong, or there was a misunderstanding
(and why is Time Capsule showing up as "Data" with yellow triangle in iMovie under Hard Disks)
Because iMovie won't work with files on a network -- it would be excruciatingly slow.
You need an external HD; or a larger internal HD; or to move some other stuff elsewhere.
Besides, if you have your backups on your Time Capsule, you don't want to put other stuff there anyway.  First, how will you back up that other stuff?  Second, mixing TM backups and other stuff on the TC will cause conflicts.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

    iMovie '08, Mac OS X (10.5.8), FCE 4

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Splitting Large iMovie File into two

I have a recording of a HD video of a play of two acts that I have already loaded into iMovie 6. The total length is about 2 hrs and 20 minutes. I don't think that I can put all of this on a single disk, even with my new MacBook Pro. I haven't encountered any of these double sided disk blanks that I hear about.
So, I planned to put Act one on one DVD disk and Act two on a second one. I have done this previously with no problem (for a non HD video recording using iMovie version 5) , but I don't recall exactly my procedure.
I tried to simply create two new iMovie projects, one for Act I, the other for Act II and import to the respective new files. However, when it starts importing the first act, iMovie says that it will take some 720 minutes! That's a long time, and then there is Act two to import.
Surely, there is a more efficient method of accomplishing this task? Does anyone know?
    Thanks; Bill Livesay
    Dual G-4 & MacBook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks Karl and LargeAl for your good advice:
My total file for the play was about 206 GB. This did not give me much room to duplicate, even on my new 500GB external hard drive. When I tried to drag clips to another project, the times ran very long. Maybe I wasn't doing something right, but don't know. In any case, there was a way around all of this.
It finally occured to me to simply lift Act II from the time line and put it carefull in order on the clip shelves. I then completed the editing of Act I and the DVD part, encoded & burned a DVD to see how it looked on our TV, made a sequence of corrections, and finally got to the task of burning the 50+ copies I needed for the full cast.
With Act I completed, I went back into iMovie and moved the clips in Act I from the time line to the clip shelf, all carefully in order. I moved Act II onto the time line, did all of the editing needed, made a new DVD for Act II (several times) and then ran off the needed 50+ copies of Act II. Surprisingly, even the chapter markers already assigned carried over fine, but appropriately renumbered.
The technique turned out to be pretty simple. But, the large (for me) project involved a large number of hours of careful work
In any case, it's all finally accomplished and I gave the copies to my grand daughter this evening. They had put on a magnificant performance and now have something to study for further improvement - and to just save for looking at in future years.
What we do for grand children!!
Thanks again to Karl and LargeAl for your suggestions.
