Backing Up IMovie HD Project Fails to Complete

I have a project in my iMac. It is currently about 12Gb. I tried to drag and drop the project folder in my external (Mac formatted) FW hard drive. It stops copying with an error saying clip 3_1.dv is missing some information. I temporarily moved that file out of the project folder and then it encounters another clip with the same message. Some clips are OK. I have never emptied my trash. I keep an original folder with imported camcorder clips. I open that project folder and drag and drop clips from that source folder into my working project folder clips pane. Would that process have something to do with missing info.?
My next attempt was to open the project folder in iMovie HD and do a "File/Save As/" into the external drive. Two different unsuccessful outcomes: 1) error msg saying could not complete save because there is not enough space and other reasons I cannot remember. 2) Or the File/Save As just hangs with progress bar only at 5-10% completion. I then shutdown via the power button.
I have about 80GB available hard drive space, so I don't think space is an issue.
Any other way to make these backup copies?
Thank-you,
Joe

Turns out my hard drive was full of bad blocks and sectors. Apparently, some of my clips were in bad blocks probably after they were imported into my project, so Finder encountered this and cancelled my attempt to copy and archive files. It was interesting that iMovie continued to play through the affected files.
I replaced the Hard Drive and all seems fine now.

Unfortunately, not much to go on here. There are any of  twenty different reasons why backups are not occurring, and no shortcuts that I know of to find out why.

  • Backing up iMovie HD projects

    Hi,
I am in the process of moving a bunch of old 8 mm camcorder tapes to DVD. I am using a Canon ZR 70 MC camcorder as a AV-DV passthrough, downloading the video to an iMovie HD project then using OneStep DVD (from movie) in iDVD to burn the DVD. This is very tedious but has worked. I am now trying to save the iMovie HD projects to an external hard drive as a backup so I can delete the originals on my iMac hard drive. When I try to drag/copy the iMovie HD project to the external hard drive, I get an error message and it is unable to copy. If I try to "Save As" to the hard drive, I get a 2 gb file (vs 25 gb in the original) missing the original clips, etc I see when I open the file saved on my iMac. I see the same thing (incomplete file) on the Time Machine back up. I could not find anything in the manuals/support addressing this. I'm sure there are better ways to go about this whole process, but is there a simple solution to the backup issue?
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.
    John

I have tried different ways to try to save the files without any luck. I would think it has to do with the file format or how it is saved but I can't figure out why given that the files work fine to burn the DVD.
Then you had better go back to the beginning. Are you trying to save video files or iMovie HD project packages? What specific error messages are you receiving? Which "different ways" have you tried to save files. Since it does not appear to be a length restriction due to formatting, it could be anything from a file system error to a parameter list error to insufficient memory to, at the worst, an OS corruption error. Basically, we need more information to rule out various possibilities.

  • IMovie Lost Project

I was working on a 23 minute movie and had numerous edits, titles and chapter markers. I exported the movie to Media Browser and when I opened it from the Media Browser file, it just showed the whole Events file -not the Project file. Then when I went back to iMovie, the Project was totally gone - all that work just gone.
I can't find the edited Project file. I've used Spotlight-can't find it anywhere.
I can't understand why this happened. And if I have to do it all over again, how do I avoid this? I'm new to this version of iMovie.
I want to burn a DVD using Toast.
    Thanks for your help.

Never mind. The file magically reappeared, but it's a learning curve on this new iMovie.

  • I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • Exporting then importing projects back into imovie so I can re-edit

If I have almost completed a project but want it off my hard drive for awhile, is there a way to save that project on a portable drive, then latter, if I need to make changes, import that project back into imovie so I can add video or change the transitions, etc. I find after exporting a project if I import it back, it cannot be re-edited without starting all over. In other words I want to save and store a project with all the editing instructions and then be able to import it back for changes. Thanks for any help on this...

Project files (which are merely a set of instructions describing how a file will be made when it is to be exported/shared) are relatively small compared to Event (i.e., source) files and you would normally reap greater benefits by moving/keeping them on an external drive. If Events are moved from within iMovie '08, their paths will remain unbroken. If, however, you remove the the project files and anything happens to change either the Project or Event paths, you could be in a lot of trouble trying to get/fit everything back to its proper location with path references in tact at a later time.

  • How do I move a project from an external drive back into Imovie

I recently bought an Iomega external hard drive to store documentary movies so that I wouldn't jam up my Imac's free space. However, after I moved an imovie/idvd project to it, and wanted to make changes, I could not move the project back into the Imac's drive. (It also would not burn from the external, giving me a multiplex error) When I tried to move the movie back into Imovie on the Imac it said Quicktime couldn't parse it. I saw various posts about parsing, but not about specifically about moving a project from an external drive. Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems to me that I should be able to move a project back and forth without that much trouble.

Sounds like you have a DVD format (MPEG-2) and not an iMovie Project file.
The key phrases are "multiplex" and "parse". Both suggest MPEG-2 format when opened in QuickTime. It would also throw an error -2048 message if MPEG-2.
But another issue could be the file format of the external drive. Most ship pre-formatted for the Windows OS's but a Mac user should format using HFS+ (and others). If you didn't format the drive before moving the large iMovie Project onto it it may have become severely fragmented if the external used FAT 16 or FAT 32 (very common) formats. They have a 2 or 4 GB file size limit, respectively and would have made your Project unreadable when moved back and forth.
Use the Disk Utility app to find out the format of your external drive.

  • If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does it take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

  • Is there a way to go move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

This is clearly a newbie question:
I know how to share from Imovie to IDVD and I made my IDVD project, but now I don't know if I still have the IMovie I originally transferred.
Is there a way to move a project from IDVD back to IMOVIE?

First, go back to iMovie and look under both iMovie Events and Projects to see if you still have the movie. Double check by looking in Finder to where you save the movies you create. For instance, if you save to Movies, there should be folders in there for iMovie Events and iMovie Projects. If they are there, you should see them in the lists in iMovie.
If not, I don't think there is a way you can move it directly back to iMovie. Is there a real need to have it in iMovie? Unless you are going to change the movie, there is not a need to keep it there. If, for some reason you want it there, however, you can go thru the process of copying the DVD back to the hard drive using MPEG Streamclip, and exporting it to Quicktime. Then open iMovie, and bring it back into iMovie.

  • After renaming and moving to my desktop an iMovie project, i can not open it. I moved it back to iMovie but still it is not working. I noticed that there is not an Event Folder for the project. Can someone help me?

I renamed an iMovie project, then I moved it out of iMovie to my desktop. It did not work from there. Finally I managed to move it back to iMovie, but still does not work. I can't edit it, it does not even appear as an option. I found out that the Event Folder for this Project is gone. Is this the problem? Is there a way I can get it back? Can somenone help me?? Obviously after so many mistakes you can tell I am new on this. Any help will be appreciated it!!!!!

OK Let's take a step back.
If you imported video clips from a camcorder there would be an Events folder in the Movies/iMovie Events/ folder.
You have the option as you import from a camcorder to send your Event to an external drive instead. In this case, it would be in the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the external drive.
If your project has no video clips, but only photos, there may be no events folder, only links to iPhoto.
Similarly, if your camera imported your video clips to iPhoto, and you used the iPhoto event in iMovie, then your clips are in iPhoto, and there is no separate iMovie event.

If the system just Restarted on it's own, Shut down while you were working on something then started back up all those changes, edits, you had done in that app, document, are gone.

  • Importing completed iMovie back into iMovie for additional editing

My daughter recently completed a mini movie, courtesy of an Apple Film camp...lots of fun.
Her completed movie, made at the Apple Store using iMovie, was placed on a DVD. The DVD plays the movie, which is great, but i am not able to import the movie back into iMovie, so that I can edit it, or rather, shrink the size, for my daughter for use in other platforms.
Everytime I try to open the DVD, I have files for audio and files for video, which can't be imported in, and no complete iMovie file.
I'm probably doing something very stupid, and if somebody could help, that would be great.
    Thanks!

Once you encode your movie for DVD, it changes the format/codec to MPEG2 which is no longer readable by iMovie.
I suggest you read the Recent User Contributed Tips at the top of this forum - the one by AppleMan 1958 - How to import a home movie on DVD into iMovie for editing:

  • Export Complete iMovie '08 project

We are hoping to move an entire iMovie '08 project to a friends computer.
We first tried just moving the project from the iMovie Projects folder to the same location on their Mac, but the .avi files that were imported into iMovie from iPhoto did copy (nor are the stored in the iMovie Events folder).
Also the songs didn't seem to copy either (the songs were inserted into the Movie through iTunes).
Has anyone found any sort of easy way to export an iMovie project to another computer with all of the linked resources (that might be in iPhoto, iTunes, or wherever)?

iMovie Projects are .MOV files. Once you create a Project it takes the clips from Events in whatever format they are in (usually AVI from iPhoto, DV etc. from the iMovie Events folders) and converts them to H.264 .MOV files. Once they are in a standardized, editable format, you can then overlay sound, transitions, and titles.
It sounds like you tried to move the files from the Events folder as located in the Finder. That will not be the integrated project.
Just select the edited clip(s), Control-Click and choose Reveal in Finder. That's the file you want.
If you want both the Event and Project files on another Mac, you need to manually find the AVI file via the iPhoto link in the Event Library. This is because (for some odd reason) iMovie cannot find the original clip using Control-Click Reveal in Event Browser for iPhoto imports to the Project Library.
Therefore, you need that same AVI moved via the Finder from iPhoto tot he other Mac's iPhoto.
A better editing option is to simply export all your iPhoto movies in AVI format to iMovie directly. That way the internal linking between the Project Library and Event Library works as it should. The iPhoto grab from iMovie is a bit of a kludge.
    Hope that helps.

  • While working on FCPX project, power failed. Power on, restarted, opened FC, Project Library shows blank icon, no clips. Click on icon, nothing happens. Haven't done back-up. Can project be recovered?

While working on a FXPX project, there was a power failure. Power back on, restarted FCPX, project name in Project Library is a blank icon, nothing happens when I click on it. Believing back ups were automatic and continuous, I made no back up. Can the project be recovered?

Years of fine internet use via WIFI then randomly it starts dropping then one day (weeks later) it is no longer accessible at all and even saying "No hardware installed" when I click on WIFI icon at the top right on screen. Here is how I finally fixed it!:
For six months I wallowed in this problem and had to connect my macbook pro to the internet via ethernet cable which as you can image was very restrictive :/
I have had numerous laptop technicans befuddled by this WIFI problem and most concluding with how my WIFI card must be broken and that I will need to buy a new one. The last suggestion I had on the matter was to buy a USB wifi dongle.
So I ended up buying this one, http://www.asus.com/nz/Networking/USBN10_NANO/Unfortunately my macbook pro didn't want to read the install disc and it didn't autorun so it didn't work. After reading more forums I saw that you could download the program from the net and sure enough it worked.. BUT STRANGER when I took the USB dongle out the WIFI was still working!! The program appears to have reminded my four year old macbook pro that it is indeed WIFI capable.
So to find this miraculous program its located herehttp://www.asus.com/nz/Networking/USBN10_NANO/HelpDesk_Download/
Same link as above just under SUPPORT>Driver&Tools
You then click on a file when its downloaded and a file called MAC will appear, then click on install. Within 5 minutes you should have your WIFI back. My macbook pro crashed again today but without having to get the shortest ethernet cable you've ever seen out again - I was able to install the program again and WIFI was up and running once more. Moral of the story - didn't need to spend any money to fix this and not even using the USB dongle.
So happy!! Hope it works for you too!
This also worked on a MacBook that lost its WIFI when a user accounts password was changed and the keychain password wasn't known to them - another random way to lose WIFI apparently
