Backing up individual events

Please help me back up individual events.
When I shoot a wedding, I store all images for that wedding in a hierarchical set of folders. Something like this:
\pics\business\John and Mary\engagements
\pics\business\John and Mary\engagements\converted
\pics\business\John and Mary\engagements\converted\selected
\pics\business\John and Mary\bridals
\pics\business\John and Mary\bridals\converted
\pics\business\John and Mary\bridals\converted\selected
... and so on
Inside of the root of each "subset" of images (engagements, for instance) are the raw files. And, up until now, there was a \.RWSettings folder right next to the \Converted folder.
To back everything up... I simply pointed to \pics\business\John and Mary and copied the entire structure. This worked whether synchronizing to an external hard drive (something I do immediately after copying the raw files to the computer) or to DVD when I'm archiving the event.
That whole directory structure may be removed over time in order to make room for future events. But to restore the files and be back up and running, it's a simple matter of copying the files from the DVDs right back to where they were.
But now ... with Lightroom ... I don't know what to do.
Where are my image settings being stored? I assume in the library. How do I get them out? How do I back up all of the files (and ONLY those files) for that one wedding to DVD so that I can quickly restore them later and have an identical set of images AND settings as compared to what I archived?
I really miss the .RWSettings method (of RSP) for storing the image settings. It was simple. It made tons of sense. It stayed out of the way (being in a subfolder instead of being in the same folder as my images). It was easy to back up and just as easy to restore. It was easy to move files from my laptop to my computer. It was easy to start off with the files on one drive or location and later change my mind and move them to a new drive or location.
As to how to do this in LR ... I just don't get it. I've read a little bit from the thread about synching between two computers because it sounds like a similar idea. But man, it shouldn't be that hard to move files from one system to another or from one drive to another.
Quick and easy. That's the way backups should be. Make 'em hard and people won't do them.
I would really like to see LR storing its settings externally the way RSP did. Make it "optional" if you have to. For me, the library idea accomplishes nothing. I never use metadata to store "searchable information" like keywords and such. So it makes no sense to throw all of the image settings, etc, into one giant database. I'd much rather that the information stay close to the raw image so that it is easily backed up and restored together as a set.
Thanks,
David

Well I processed a wedding today and created a book (AsukaBook) through LR and PS CS2 and it worked great. Here was my process:
1. I imported all the RAW images into LR.
2. Then went through and rated the images I wanted to use in the book with a single star.
3. Then used the filter to view only the rated images.
4. Used a green label to label all the images. (so all the rated images are now also labeled green - explanation as to why I did this to follow).
5. I manually sorted the images into the sequence I wanted to build the book on.
6. As I created each spread, I selected the images I wanted to include and processed them in the develop module. As most spreads included similar images, adjusting the exposure, WB, etc. went fairly quickly. I also cropped the images appropriatey.
7. When I was done 'processing', I exported the images as hi-res tifs to a separate folder in under the wedding client. I used Export rather than Edit in PhotoShop so I could get the resolution where I wanted (Asukabook uses 271ppi) and these were NOT re-imported into LR. I also set the automatic action after export to open the images in CS2. This worked like a charm!
8. I built my spread and saved the layered document into a PageMasters folder. Done!
I can't believe how smoothly this operation worked. If I had an image that needed to be adjusted some more, I simply went back to LR, re-developed the image to where I needed it, and re-exported it. Since I was exporting to the same folder, everything was just one or two clicks to get it back into PS. I could've adjusted right in PS, but then the image would be different from my "master" image in LR and it didn't take much extra time. I have this Export saved now as a preset. When you re-export an image, it prompts you to overwrite the existing image (yes) and then automatically opens in PS. Great!
9. When I was done with the spread and saved it. I went back into LR. The images were still hi-lighted (for the export) and I took the green label off those images, resetting it back to 'none'. And by filtering on the green label, when I was done with the spread and set the label to none, those 'used' images disappeared leaving me only the images I still had to work on.
So when I was done the book, there were a couple of green labeled images that I didn't use in the layout. I un-labeled these, set the rating to '0' (cause I'm not using them in the book) and made sure that all my XMP was saved to the original files.
SO.. now I have the original RAW images selected for the book with a 1* rating and the rejects with 0*. All the selected images have been adjusted - and all in LR.
I have a folder of 'processed' tifs, ready for reorders.
I have a folder of 'Master Pages' ready to be sent to AsukaBook.
All of these are sub- folders under the client name.
I can now burn the lot to DVD, backup to external HD, or whatever I like. Once that's done, I can delete them from LR and I'm done.
I like jpmcs's idea of keeping one of the images in the Library as reference. I'll probably start doing that with this years jobs.
And Dave... you probably picked the lesser of two evils!! :)
Cheers

    Hi..
    Thanks for the reply..
My original I Phone 5 was running IOS 6.12
My I phone 5S currently runs IOS 8..When I upgraded it, it had IOS 7 on it which made the I Photo app compatible with everything below IOS 8...( which the photo app is not compatible with ) so I just connected the I Phone 5S to my computer and thinking the new phone had IOS 7 on it that these was nothing to worry about..I thought all 900 + pictures in the photo stream would transfer but somewhere in the process, I Tunes decides to just go and install IOS 8 which requires that you run a " Photo Migration App" to transfer photos from IOS 7 & below. The problem was is that I didn't want IOS 8 on my new 5S so I thought I wouldn't have to do that part..
Anyway the phone emerged with IOS 8 on it and the only photos that remained were the ones that were actually on the phone..The 900 + I had in the stream didn't transfer because the Photos that works on IOS 7 and below isn't compatible with IOS 8..I guess you have to use the photo migration app that comes with IOS 8 & I phone 6..But I didn't ask to upgrade to IOS 8...It just did it on it's own!
I still have the I Phone 5 Back up that I did just before giving it back to Verizon but if I try to restore the I Phone 5S running IOS 8 those photos in the stream will not go back on the phone because IOS 8 isn't compatible with the I Photos" that ran on IOS 7 and below..
So I have an I Pad mini that runs IOS 7..should I try and erase it...and put that I Phone 5 backup on it and pray the photos that were in the stream come back on it so I can transfer them back to my computer...then erase the I pad mini again and restore it using it's original backup that I have on the computer and the in the cloud?
I know this sounds confusing but I'm at a loss as to what to do..This is what I found ...http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201386
    but it doesn't help me..

Go to Settings\Mail, Contacts, Calendars\Add Account  (select iCloud)
You can create a new account here  ("Get a Free Apple ID" at the bottom) or switch it to another existing account you may have (separate from your Husbands).
Once you tie your phone into the separate account you can go back and delete your Husbands on your phone.

  • Backing up iMovie events and projects in 10.0.1

I am new to a Mac and I have iMovie 10.0.1 and would like to back up my events and projects that I create to an external hard drive.  I don't see anywhere under File where I can create a backup or export my events or projects.
Would I use the Share and select File to copy it to my external hard drive?
Also, I have iMovie 10.0.1, what is iMovie '11? Is this an older version?
Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

    This stumped me, too.
Seems all the tutorials on the web (including Apple's) that explain this process using a previous iteration of iMovie.
After reading this post http://macmost.com/imovie-basics.html, I figured it out.
With iMovie open, choose File>Open Library>New. In the resulting dialog, name your new library file and choose the drive you want it on. Your new library will show up in the sidebar under the original one.
For example, I created a new library on a My Book external drive. This is how it looked in the iMove sidebar. The old library is circled in green; the new in red.
To move a project, select it under the original iMovie Library (not All Events or All Projects). Hold down the command key while dragging the project to your new iMovie Library. If you only want to copy the project, don't hold down the command key when dragging the files.

  • IMovie '11: how to move edited clips back into the event library?

I made a green screen video that is supposed to be the foreground, and edited out the ums and ahs.  Now I need to add a green screen background, which apparently I cannot do after already inserting the green screen foreground footage.  (I would LOVE to be able to do that, but apparently you cannot.)  I have tried to drag the edited videos back into the event library, but they bounce back out, and I have checked all of the menus twice and there is no command to export to event library.  Help!  I need to insert a background and don't have another hour to re-edit from scratch.

    Hi
No - there are no easy and straight forward way to do this - BUT
You must do as one does in iMoivie when there is a need to combine several functions.
Export out (the manipulated clip) as a full quality QuickTime movie (just this part)
Then import this as a new Event
Put this into a new project (if several effects is to be applied) or into Main movie if You only need to apply one more thing as a GreenScreen.
For several effects - one might need to Export/Import several times. Much easier in FinalCut Pro.

  • In iPhoto, can I file individual events from one year into one main event withouthout m muddling them up?ing them up

In iPhoto, can I file individual events from one year into one main event without muddling them up?

Perhaps I misunderstood you. You want to have a hierarchy
    Folder: 2000
->Contains Event for January, February, etc
    Folder 2001
-> Contains Event for January, February etc
That sort of thing? Well with Events, no you can't. Yes you can do that with Albums, but not Events.
That said, it's a pretty limited way of organising your photos - in fact you might as well just use folders in the Finder. You can find the photos from any year, month, day with the Calendar tool. Simply click on the Search icon on the bottom, then on the the wee drop down and select the calendar tool.
Want the photos from a particular range - say, June 11 1999 to September 30 2001? Then a Smart Album will do that.
But the problem is that it's often hard to remember the year/month something happened. Did we go to Disney in 1997 or 98? There are other more useful ways that make your snaps more searchable.
Here's a canned answer that I offer that suggests some of the richer organising possibilities of iPhoto. It might spark something.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

I accidentally create a new event on an old event, now i want to get back my old event's editing.  What should i do?

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • How do I move Flagged Photos Event back to original event?

I made the mistake of thinking that I was making an event from flagged photos within an event.  Instead, it created a Flagged Photos event of photos from ALL my events.  I've read the instructions on how to put them back, but I can't get the events close to each other to drag from one to the other.  Is there another way?  Or can someone explain how to move the Flagged Photos close to the original Event?  I have over 400 that I want back in their original places.
    Thanks!

If you didn't make a back up then you don't have one. And you should. Immeadiately.
If you want move photos to a specific Event, flag them, select the target Event and go EVents menu -> Add Flagged Photos to Selected Events

  • ICal time zone correct in month view, but wrong for individual events

I have my timezone set correctly to Pacific everywhere I know of (iCal upper right corner, iCloud account, computer, iPhone).
When I create an event (e.g. typing "6:30pm Work out" into a new event block), it shows up correctly (e.g. places itself at 6:30pm in monthly/weekly view).
However, when I click the event, in the details box it has the wrong timezone set (e.g. says that it's at 1:30am GMT).
This doesn't impact how things look in my calendar view, or how they sync to my iPhone and my Google calendars, all of that is fine.
What it DOES impact is that if I need to change the time, I have to go in and switch a bunch of things in invariably clumsy ways (e.g. change it to 7:30pm... oops, now it's tomorrow, switch its timezone to Pacific... shoot, now it's 9:30am, change back to 7:30pm...)
It's just annoying, and shouldn't be happening. Anyone know what is going on, and how to fix it? I've deleted the calendar cache, but it didn't help.

  • My iphone 4 will not back up calendar events to the icloud!

Since I installed Mountain Lion and subsequently activated iCloud for the first time I have been having a few issues with Calendars.
First issues was all the doubled up events which I eventually sorted out by turning the iCloud settings on and off and then merging for my Macbook and iPhone 4. Since then any Calendar events that I have entered on my Macbook have been backing up to the iCloud with no issues and have been pushing to my iPhone as well. Where the problem comes in is when I enter an event on my iPhone calendar it does not back up to the iCloud and therefore does not come up on my Macbook calendar either. Any help would be much appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.

  • Can I back up individual image files to a slideshow DVD created in Premiere Elements 4.0?

I created a Premiere Elements 4.0 Project including 3 separate photo slideshows. The slideshows were created in Photoshop Elements 6.0 and imported into my Premiere Elements project. I was hoping that when burning the project to DVD, my image files would also be individually backed up.
When I give the DVD to family members I would like them to have access to the image files so they can print or use them individually. I would like to do this in 1 single DVD rather than giving them a DVD with the slideshows and a DVD with the image files. I was able to do this with a previous DVD authoring program I was using, but I cannot figure it out with Premiere Elements 4.0.
Any ideas if this is do-able with Premiere Elements 4? (I am running Windows Vista Home premium SP1 - 64bit - 3GB RAM)

Thanks for your help. I tried this. I burned the project to a folder (4.7GB) then to that folder I added a folder with my photos. So in the folder there was "Photos", "OpenDVD" and "Video_TS". I had 3 separate folders within the "Photos" folder, to keep the 3 slideshow photos grouped.
I burned the entire folder to a DVD using my burn tool. I don't even know the name of the software I used, but I think it was just the Toshiba burn tool. I dragged and dropped the folder into my new disc folder, then at the top of my screen clicked "burn to disc", I named the disc and chose from the formating options "Mastered: disc can be read on other computers and some CD/DVD... no new data can be added..."
Once burned I checked it on my DVD player and now it recognizes only the individual jpg files so it does a generic slideshow of these images rather than my slideshow project. (no menu, music...) Putting the disc in my computer I could access either the files or the slideshow project, but not on my home DVD player.
I burned the folders to 2 separate discs, once dragging the whole folder to the disc and once opening the folder and dragging only the individual folders to the disc.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. thanks.

  • Backing up iMovie Events and Projects As Opposed to Moving Them

Hi all. I'd like to make some backups of my iMovie events and projects. I read on the Apple site that the best way to do this is through iMovie itself and not the Finder. I should drag events to an external hard drive inside the iMovie window. When I do this, does it copy the event to the drive, or does it move it to the drive. I'd rather have a copy since I'm trying to make a backup. Also, how would I do this for projects to make a backup?
    2) If I already copied my Events and Projects folder to an external drive, would I be able to use these in the future? Would I just place them inside my Movies folder under user and launch iMovie. These just seems easier in the event that everything crashed. Am I missing something here? It seems like it would be easier just to copy these two folders everytime, and save them in case of a hard drive crash.
    Thanks.

If you drag your Projects folder over to the external drive icon in the Project Library, a pop-up window will give you the option of just duplicating the Project or getting the Project + associated Events too. I suggest going with the copy of Projects + Events to get a real duplicate backup of your iMovie project. By default iMovie assumes you want a copy.
If you want to move a Project/Events combo, you would hold down the ⌘ Command key and drag the project to the external drive icon in the Project Library.
Any time you want a backup, just drag that project folder to the external drive icon, but just make sure you do it regularly. Otherwise you'll end up with an older incomplete previous version of the project because the backup is based on an action you have to remember to do.
If you already dragged those folders over outside of iMovie, it's unlikely iMovie will be able to see or find those files. You would have to drag them back to the iMovies folders inside your Movies folder. So there's an extra step involved. And if you do that regularly, and don't mind dragging files back into the iMovies folders, that will work too. On the Mac, there's always more than one way to do things, so do what makes sense to you.

  • Event name changes back to 'new event'

When I put in an event and hit enter or apply, quite often the name doesn't stay but reverts to 'New Event'. Any ideas how to stop this. I thought it was a bug that everyone would have and that an update would fix it, but I've had it for a long time now. It started sometime after installing Lion and/or the update after that.

Give us a bit more info.. I am guessing you are using Mavericks on the computer.. but if not exactly what OS?
And please what does Airport + TC actually mean.. and how are they configured and connected???
The TC is highly unlikely to change the name of the hard disk drive. Auto spontaneously.. that would be extremely unusual.
But for Mavericks to get it fouled up is not hard to fathom at all. It is a hopeless OS with the TC network drive.
Can you please change the drive name back to what you want.. but ensure the TC has no spaces or special characters in its name or the name of the drive. And max of 20 characters.
Then in Finder mount the disk manually.. use top menu, Go, Connect to Server.. and type
AFP://TCname or IPaddress (where you replace with the actual name or ip).
The computer should find the resources and require you to register the password.. keep it in your keychain so it is not forgotten.
Then delete the current TM setup and redo it.
    See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Any backup over wireless is slow..
Any backup over double hop wireless ie extend wireless from AE to TC.. you will discover a new meaning to the word "SLOW".. pain and suffering like the belly of Sarlacc awaits you.. do not do it.. never double hop wireless for backups. Connect units by ethernet so there is max one wireless link.
    Good luck.

  • Why would iPhoto consolidate all of my events in to one?  How do I get it back to separating my 22,000 photos back to their event foldres?

I had my iPhoto window open.  When I went to look at it, in the "Photos" Library, all of my Events and 22,788 photos were consolidated in to two folders.  Previous to this, I had hundreds of Events as I was using them to view my photos easily.
Why did this happen?  What did I do?  Can I get it back to it's previous layout?!
    Heeeellllpppp....p
    Angela

    You're not getting this?
    If not do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Backing up iphoto events

How do I back up my iphoto events to a flash drive or DVD and maintain timestamp? I want to be able to import them again as events, in their chronological order. Thx!

The only way is to make a copy of the iPhoto library to a storage device that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
There is no importing involved - you simply use te iPhoto library - it is a SQL database and must be treated as a single entity and kept intact
