Backing up iPad to laptop

Hello,
I have plugged my iPad into my laptop to back it up but when I do this it gives me the option of either setting it up as a new iPad or restoring from a back up for a different device.
I've had my iPad for a few years but possibly not backed it up which might be why I'm having this issue, if I set it up as a new iPad will it wipe what is already on there?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Setting up the device as new will delete all of your data.
You have started iTunes before plugging in the iPad?
Have you considered online backup?
Define a new user account on you laptop.  Try backing up with the new user account.

I synched my iPad with iTunes and it replaced everything with an old version of what I backed up on the laptop.   How can I restore it?   Please help!!!!

  • My ipad and laptop were stolen, how can I get my data back?

Both my ipad and laptop were stolen. Ive downloaded itunes onto a new laptop but none of my files are there. I was using iCloud. Can anyone help?

You're music can be downlooaded (if it was purchased using iTunes) have you signed into your account in iTunes on the new laptop?
If the music was not purchased from iTunes and you are using iTunes Match you can also download it. If you are not using iTunes Match music that was not purchased from iTunes is gone.

  • How do I move my iphone/ipad and laptop to a separate account?

My family and I have shared the same itunes account/appleID and have waay too many devices to keep track of. Presently there are 3 of us, we are homesharing the account on our individual lap tops and each have our own iphone and ipads backed up our personal laptop. We've had some confusion with devices mixing and matching our email addresses and phone numbers for facetime and messaging - this is the real reason I want to seperate the accounts. However, I don't want to lose anything I purchased on my new ipad, including the updates.
If I just synched my devices with my own laptop, will there be any negative side effects of creating a new apple ID and itunes account that is specific for me?
will this completely remove my devices from the existing account or must i do that manually by changing the apple id on the phone and ipad?
is there an ideal order of steps to do this, meaning creating the new appleID, new itunes and getting my devices to use them?
how will I be able to delete the association of my devices to the exisiting appleID or will that automatically occur when the devices are given a new apple ID? I know a homeshare is limited to a set number of devices and I can't remember how to take one off.
Should I turn off homeshare at my laptop since my laptop and devices will switch itunes accounts from that of the spouse and teen?
    thanks

should I just cry uncle and go to the local genius bar for instructions lol

  • I lost my laptop I didn't back up and I just bought a new one .How can I get all the songs I bought in itunes store back to my new laptop??

    can someone help me please?
I lost my laptop on Monday and I didn't back up. I just bought a new macbook air so I know I have to install all my applications and softwares again but I was told I could get my old itunes library I mean all the music I bought back in my new laptop. can someone tell me how to do it or if I can?

Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. It's your responsibility to make backup copies (as iTunes itself advises) in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
For apps, look here for instructions on redownloading.  For songs, movies, and videos, if you don't have a backup of your purchased items, either on external media or another computer and don't have them on an iOS device (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad), you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your content.
If you have your content on an iOS device, post back and someone here can help you get them restored. Otherwise you can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.
    Regards.

  • How to back up iPad files away from home?

One can obviously back up iPad files away from home by uploading them to a server in the clouds, but it appears that there is no way to back up iPad files locally when not connected to a computer. What if I'm shooting photos and video while traveling and editing them on my iPad? Uploading gigabytes of data to a web server would be really painful! When I asked this question at my local Apple Store, it was obvious that Apple had not briefed their store employees on this issue.
As far as I can see, the iPad aspires to be far more than a home entertainment unit, as well it should. But the bottom line is that you've gotta be able to back up your work. Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

Some aspects yes via MobileMe such as contacts, mail etc which should already be in the Cloud or on another remote server somewhere.

    Correct, subject to the above.

Remember they have had the iPad less time than you Not an excuse but something to consider. Your point is well made though. Thats why its not a replacement for a laptop and has been stressed repeatedly to be so.

Yes, its not a laptop replacement so your expectations are great, but not something that the architecture could support. Once Apple get the MobileMe/iDisk thing sorted out to allow storage on that from the iPad it will be fine. Until then, its 'just' a mobile entertainment device as advertised and it will never be a replacement for a laptop.

  • Streaming photos from ipad to laptop

I streamed photos from my laptop to ipad (not using iCloud) and my laptop hard drive has now failed. I have no back-up of the photos. I can still see the photos on the ipad. Is it possible to stream the photos back to a new laptop from the ipad?  None of the photos were taken from the ipad. I was advised by the apple store that it is not possible to stream from ipad to laptop due to copy right laws etc. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Thanks

It seems that you have used the AppleIDs to "Purchase" your devices, which marries the two for all time and eternity.

The Apple techs are looking. But they can't find it. Nor can they find a back up on my laptop, Evidently when I backed up my Iphone to computer the calendar wasn't syncing. Since I only use the calander on my phone - I never noticed.
The Apple store rep that sold me the I-Phone 5 on Monday, was transferring my contacts and calendar thru I-Cloud (I never used I-Cloud before that moment - and always had it turned off). He successfully transferred the contacts - which are still on my phone), but the Calendar weirdly split into 6 calendars (2 of which were linked to my G-Mail which only had a few entries) (4 were linked to my MSN / Hotmail email and contained all the major events/data). I never created calendars that were separate or liked them to 2 different emails. I just typed entries into the I-Phone calendar. However, the calendar did exist on the new I-Phone for 24 hours. Something happened during transfer. When the Apple Genius Bar tech was attempting to back up my Calendar & merge the 6 calendars, everything disappeared in his hand while he was looking at it.
I am hoping that some really good data recovery expert exists that can restore the calendar that was in both I-Phones yesterday. It is completely devastating if I can't recover it.
Any help, or referrals, is great appreciated!!!!
    Thanks!

  • ITunes would not update Ipad soft, stating I don't have enogh space onthe PC for files, even though I just completely backed up Ipad through Itunes on the same PC. Seems like Itunes is disconected from itself.

Itunes would  not update my Ipad soft citing insuficient space on PC to back up Ipad files. Even though I just baked up Ipad through Itunes on the very same PC.
It seems that Itunes is disconected from itself and is not able to track processes within itself for the same device in the same session. Any solutions?

  • Backing up iPad "Notes"

I manually backed-up iPad to PC running Windows and then reset iPad to factory default erasing everything. I am able to find photos and videos in the back up location, but I cannot find "Note" files; are they backed up the same way as photos and videos? and where can I find them? I searched windows, but other than iPad crash and log files can't find "Notes" files. Does anyone know if they were even backed up? Need help.

You will not see the actual notes themselves in the backup, the files in the backup are not readable - without some app that will translate what they are. I use translate for lack of a better word right now.
If you restore from a backup, then the notes in the backup will be restored to the iPad, but you cannot pick them out of the backup folder as needed or to read them on your PC.
if you want to see where your backup is located and look in the folder, this tells you where it is. Be careful what you do in that folder, you don't want to hose your backup.
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

    backing up ipad to computer?

Do you have a question about backing up your iPad ? You can copy your iTunes purchases from your iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases, and then force a backup by right-clicking (command-clicking on a Mac) the iPad 'device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the sidebar via control-S on a PC, option-command-S on a Mac) and selecting 'backup' on the popup
