Backing up ipod on pc

in preferences on itunes it says 'these ipods/iphones are backed up on this computer' and none are listed.
how do i get i backed up? do i need to? i mean is it necessary?

That tab refers to a back up of information such as mail and other settings from the iPod Touch and the iPhone, not the regular iPods.

I am having the same problem (lost in back-up purgatory) on both my iPhone 4 and my iPad2. I am running Windows XP.
I have tried everything I've seen suggested on various support communities, with no success.
I have gotten used to having to find a windows workaround everytime Apple updates iTunes, and this time it is especially frustrating.
I don't have any solutions, and I am responding to all of these types of messages in hopes of finding something that will work for me.
One person was able to work through it by deleting all of the previous iTunes backup files. I'm trying that now. 4 hours into it, and it does not seem to be working......

When I try connecting it to my computer itunes opens and says I cannot connect to the ipod because it is disabled, enter passcode on ipod. The ipod is locked and disabled and will not allow me to try and put in a passcode, which I wouldn't be able to do because I have no idea what it might have been.
I downloaded the newest version of Itunes, restarted computer, connected ipod, nothing, held every button down for what seems like forever, nothing. I think I have been screwed by the pawnshop. Is there anyway of restoring this thing or is now just a $60.00 paperweight?

Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and highlight the backup you want to delete and click on Delete Backup

Okay I finally fixed it. I had to turn off wifi on ipad, connect ipad to computer with usb, unsync all music, deauthorize and then reauthorize my computer, and resync all music again! What a hassle but I now have all my music on ipad again.

hi, need help, have tried re-installing itunes and is failing to work. i can sync the ipod touch (1st gen) to my laptop but cannot snyc it to my boyfriends laptop as it is his. on his it just gets as far as 'backing up ipod' and then an error message appears and itunes shuts down. any help or ideas??? getting pretty annoyed with this.
