Backing up ipod! Too many folders.. easy way to import?

I am backing up over 8500 songs on my iPod.. I am saving them on an external hard drive AND on DVD+R dics just to be sure.
I went into the iPod settings under "My Computer" and made the folder unhidden to get the songs... I do NOT want to use any type of program. This worked fine.
I moved the songs to one folder(all of the songs with names like AEOF, etc...)
PROBLEM: I put the settings in iTunes to "Keep iTunes Media Folder organized" and "copy Files to iTunes media" so I could SAVE the songs with their title.
When I imported 875 songs into iTunes just to TEST it, it gave me 426 items in iTunes, all folders of the songs.. (yes, I have a lot of single songs!)
*If something happens to my iPod, and I want to put these songs on a new ipod, do i need to +CLICK on every folder+ to import the song in it BACK on iTunes.*
This isn't even half my collection and I already have 426 folders. I want to know now if there is an easy way to import songs without clicking on every folder.
Thank you!
Help!

To backup all the folders inside iTunes Music just copy iTunes Music to another location. Everything inside gets copied. To reimport everything you backed up, either import the backup copy of the iTunes Music folder with the iTunes option *Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library*, or copy the backup folder in as a sub-folder of the main iTunes Music folder (so you would have ...\iTunes Music\iTunes Music\<Lots of folders>) and then use *Add folder to library* to add in ...\iTunes Music\iTunes Music - iTunes will process all subfolders automatically and reorganise if you have *Keep iTunes Music folder organised* turned on.
If space is at a premium then I'd really recommend that you purchase a small external hard drive and build your complete library onto it - they are really quite cheap these days. As you have discovered, reconstucting a library from an iPod's contents is not a trivial task and, given the chances that at some point you could have your iPod lost, stolen, or the data inaccessible, having the iPod as the principle source of the library is a bad move. Even having backups of the media without having these arranged in an iTunes library makes restoring your iPod a much more complex task than it should be.

    Hi,

oracle.stellent.ridc.protocol.ServiceException: Unable to create virtual folder. Too many folders
Has anyone experienced this? If yes, please let us know how you resolved it.
    Thanks!

You don't "store" anything in contribution folders. They are just webdav access points. I recommend zero folders personally.
If you want to upload files using webdav, then I suggest using one staging folder, where files can enter the system. When the document is workflowed and/or verified, it is moved out of the folder. It's more likely however that you'll need a few access points for various types of content as each folder enforces specific metadata.
Now I imagine you are after a way to store all the HR bits and pieces of one person together as a unit. Some people use Content Folios. Personally, I'd just use a metadata field that contains the ContentID of the person's master record. Any new content for that person just gets the master ContentID stamped on it. Just search for that ContentID to get all their stuff.
Regarding best practices, there are lots of quality blogs floating around. Stellent/Oracle don't talk about best practice because each system is used by their clients in a unique way... well, that's what they say.

  • Is there an easy way to import those misfortunate photos back into iphoto

I moved my iphoto library to my external drive so that both my laptop and imac can use the synced photo library.
... but now my imac iphoto says I can not open my iphoto library, because is from a newer version of iphoto. And the application then closes.
I figured out my newer laptop has a newer version of iphoto on it.
    Imac iphoto version is 6.0.6
    Laptop iphoto version s 7.1.5
I Downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This created a new library but says a lot of my pictures are lost. I can search and find them on my external drive and reimport, but there are a lot of them! Any suggestions?
I'd rather use the 6.0.6 on my imac than pay for an upgrade.
    I just won't use my laptop's iphoto.
BUT, how can I get my 6.0.6 working again with all of my pictures in tact? Or is there an easy way to import those misfortunate photos back into iphoto painlessly?
    Any other solutions??
Will Snow Leopard have the newest iPhoto included?
    Thank you!

If you want to revert to iPhoto 6 then you have two choices:
    1. Restore from your back up
    or
    2. Create a new v6 Library and start over.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'.
Go into the Old iPhoto Library (Right Click on the Library Icon and choose ‘Show Package Contents) and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the old iPhoto Library.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
“Snow Leopard” is an OS Upgrade. While we have no idea what will be included with it, on past experience, no, it will not include a new version of iPhoto.

  • I'm trying to find an easier way to import my music to iTunes. Even the most basic music player can scan your computer and import found music into your library. I don't want to move my MP3s into the iTunes folder, I don't want iTunes doing any conversion.

I'm trying to find an easy way to import my MP3 collection into iTunes without moving, copying or changing it.
I can't believe that iTunes doesn't have this feature, as even the most basic music players always have this.
I only use iTunes to sync my iPod, as I like Media Monkey to play my MP3s.
I have 137GB of MP3s, mainly from my ripping my CDs, LPs and downloading from Amazon. I've only purchased a handful of songs from iTunes,
Any ideas on how to do this easily?

It does have that feature. Why would you assume that it doesn't?

    Okay, no problem.
If the top bar menu is not displayed in top left of your iTunes Library, use the CTRL+B keys to turn it on:
On that menu, use File/Add Folder to Library and navigate to the folder you wish to add:
If you wish to add just one song, notice the File/Add File to Library command on that menu as well.
Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop from the file's location into your iTunes Library.
That's all there is to it.
By the way, it is possible to have Amazon MP3s downloaded to your computer and then automatically added to the iTunes Library by the Amazon downloader. I do it all the time.

  • Photoshop Lightroom 3.2 (too) many folders

    Hello,
For some time I have an issue on lightroom 3.
    I have a network volume subfolder wich contains 60000 (75GB) photo's in 5000 folders.
If I import the "bunch" of pictures, it seems to work but I cannot see al te folders. The structure is : 1 folder containing almost all the subfolders one level lower, thus no many directory levels but many folders "aside" each other.
If i trie ro reimport one subfolder (from the ones I cannot see) lightroom marks me that the folders are already imported. I already tried to start with a fresh catalog, but this gives no relief.
Also my lightroom sometimes crashes, I always send an error report.
My system is Win XP SP3.
Please help me, I find if I buy such a high level program that it his to do the job ...
    Olivier

Just few thoughts that came to my mind.
Lightroom had (still has?) a "feature" in windows version that it couldn't show keyword lists which had more than 1300+(?) keywords visible (rest were just truncated. Keywords worked normally but couldn't be seen in a keyword panel), because some insane (windows?) restriction that panels could be only certain amount of pixels long. Only solution was to build keyword hierarcy which didn't show too many keywords at once.
Could same "feature" affect folders view?
Are missing folders at the end of your folder list?

  • Is there an easy way to import an addressbook file into addressbook server?

    Hi,
I have a fairly complex addressbook with around 4000 contacts and many groups.
What is the best way to import this in address book server?
If I drag the users and then the groups I end up with many duplicates.
    Tks very much

Hello, I am also working with a fairly complex addressbook with around 4000 contacts and many groups; I'm migrating from (old) Outlook 2003 and have made some progress but am not finished.  I exported my contacts to (very old) Excel 2000 and cleaned up the info there.  Then I opened the spreadsheet with Open Office and saved it in CSV format.  Then I imported/mapped that CSV file into Apple contacts successfully; however, I have to fix some long entries in the Notes field that were cut off, and I still have to figure out how to do Groups (was Categories in Outlook).  Due to limitations of Outlook 2003, fixing the cut-off Notes field entries will be manual/tedious; however, I'm hoping to figure out, or hear of, a smart way to do Groups.  Regards, -Michael

  • Backing up FCE project/files- any easy way?

I'm new to FCE 3.5.1 and could use some educatin'
Before FCE was working in Imovie. The project file was a "package" which (I think had the clips, sound, etc. in one back-up able file.
Upon install of FCE, there are folders all over the place: mostly in my Documents folder: Audio Render Files, Autosave Vault, Capture Scratch, Render Files, Thumbnail Cache Files, Waveform Cache Files. Sheeesh....
So my question is: I start a new "project" and save that project to a folder to my desktop, it has the .fce file in there that seems quite small.
What is the best way to back up a project if I just want to back up to som dvd's or even a cheap HD.
Along the same lines, how would I "copy" a project to work on a machine at another location with FCE.
I've seen some stuff about this but so far it seems incomprehensible.
    Any help appreciated.
    Jonathan

    Victor.
Thanks so much for the help. Right now I have the two HD in my G5, on is for apps, files, just about everything, and only has 17GB of space left. My second internal drive I use just as a back-up/parking space for stuff until I get around to burning something to removable media.
That drive has about 30GB left on it, and much more if I delete a bunch of stuff I don't need, so I will make this disk my "scratch" disk" for the large media files, like clips, photoshop, livetype, sound, etc.
The project file (the small FCE express file) I'll work with on the other drive.
A question I have for you or anyone that could answer this: To work on a video project on another mac off location running FCE, I know that I need to copy the project file. I'm assuming I must also copy all the media files as well, correct? Am I just looking for one particular folder that has these things in them? Or do I need to copy every folder that FCE generated as well?
The system at my other location has only one HD, therefore the scratch disk will be the main drive. Do I just copy the stuff that is on the "transport" drive to the new location computer's HD?
I'm assuming that if I do the above, there will be some prompt telling me that there are a whole bunch of things that need to be reconnected. Is that correct?
Thanks again. I look forward to your replies.

  • Back Up iPod: How Many Disks Are Required

I have an iPod Nano 2nd Gen. I want to back up @ 500 songs to CDs. Before I start I was wondering if anyone could tell me how many CDs I would need.

Thanks. Was never able to figure out the conversion between KB and MB. The average file size is 5,600 KB. So how many disks to you think it will take.... 5,600KB x 480 songs = 2,688,000KB. Appreciate it!

  • Is there an easier way? Import directly into a playlist?

I am in the middle of ripping all of my 5000+ cd's into iTunes as Apple Lossless files. I'm creating a music server with a Mac Mini, a few 1TB firewire hard drives & a Fubar II dac. I have about 500 done so far and it is becoming a handful. I insist on using playlists because I listen to lots of weird music with a lot of the artists using aliases so I want to be able to group them all together.
This is what I've been doing. I create a few hundred blank playlists. I import my cd making any changes first using command & I. I then scroll down to where all the untitled playlists are. I then have to scroll all the way to where the songs that were imported are listed alphabetically.I choose them using shift & the mouse dragging them to an untitled playlist. I do it this way because if I found by titling the playlist while it was importing and placing it where it sits alphabetically I was taking to much time trying to drag those tracks to the correct playlist. I was also occasionally dropping them in the wrong playlist altogether.
Is there really no way to automatically create a playlist using the artist and album info that you set up or what is automatically generated with cddb? Or can I really not create what I want my playlist to be titled and import the cd directly into it? I can't seem to solve this by using a smart playlist either. Any recommendations?

Here's what I've been doing for years. Its against the grain but so what.
I have 10,000 ripped files. From this I selected 2265 mp3 files(call these my Favorites) which always get "added to library" whenever I re-do my computer(s) which is very often(my hobby).
I use the Finder to organize my Music first not itunes. So I make folders and call them for example Metal, Jazz, etc ...within these folders become Artist names for example Beatles, Who , etc....I delete anything that is ahead of the name of the song(such as track number, its embedded anyway), Why? so it fits better in the smallish 'window' of music car player, etc...So what do I have ? A folder with 2265 mp3 files without track numbers and only my favorite mp3 files.
When I re-do the computer I just set up itunes always unchecking in "advanced preferences" for it to organize and make copies. I do that not itunes. I add to the library. Wait for itunes to do its thing. Set the view options. The only ones I do are, Artist, Album, bitrate, size, Grouping, time & equalizer.
Once the add is done I do that not itunes automatically, I focus on the Grouping. Examples are Metal, Folk, Smooth Jazz, etc I set these up years ago using itunes. The mp3 hold these id tags except equalizer. I select the Grouping column to arrange the sort, takes 1 second. Then do a select all by grouping and an command + i to set each Grouping equalizer all in one shot. When Equalizer function is completed for all the files then I make playlists. My Playlist is the same name as Grouping, for example Metal Grouping gets Metal playlist. That way I can find the entire Group of Metal and drag them to the playlist. All this sounds complicated, but how to explain? The entire process when I re-do my Mac takes 5 to 10 minutes. The hard work is setting up your MP3 files in the Finder but once done you only need to back up those files. iTunes is out of it. Lastly make sure you id3 tag your files when done in the itunes library using view and setting options. Make sure you drag these tagged files back to your original drive where you back them up. So they retain their tags you gve them.
    Hope this helps

  • Too many digits of precision in imported data

I store some data in a TDMS file that has four digits of precision. When I recall the data in DIAdem or import it into Excel there are many more digits there than I want. Do I just have to live with that or is there a way to limit the number of digits to just what I want?
    George

    Hi George,
Are you saving the TDMS file with LabVIEW or DIAdem?  In LabVIEW, you wire a data array of a particular data type to be written to the TDMS file, so the precision used on disk will match that of the data type.  So if you're currently wiring a DBL type, converting that array to a SGL type prior to writing the array to TDMS will reduce the precision (and the disk footprint), though it may not reduce it enough for your taste.  If you are wiring waveforms to the TDMS file, I believe you are stuck with DBL precision.
If you are saving the TDMS file in DIAdem, and if you have DIAdem 10.1, then you have the option of using the new ChnQuantize() function to limit the resolution of the data both inside of DIAdem and when you save it to disk.  Unfortunately, DIAdem 10.1 has a bug for TDMS output when using custom quantization, though this will be fixed in the upcoming DIAdem 10.1 SP1.  Still, this doesn't necessarily reduce the number of displayed digits, it just reduces the accuracy so that similar values can be saved in a smaller binary footprint.  So this may not be what you're after.
Regardless of the resolution of the saved binary data, DIAdem loads all channel values as DBLs in the Data Portal, and it displays all the digits of precision corresponding to the DBL value it has in memory.  However, you can always change the displayed format of a channel value in a VIEW or REPORT table by changing that column's format string.  Try "d.ddd" or "d.ddde" for instance.
