Backing up iTunes Library question...

So years ago when I got my laptop, I decided to keep my iTunes library on an external hard drive so those 30 GB of files weren't eating up realestate on my main hard drive. At the time, I also backed everything up to DVD's just in case anything ever happened to the drive.
Over the last three years I've downloaded more files and so on. I would like to update my DVD backups to reflect this. Is there any way for me to see what files were added to the library after the last back-up date (somewhere in November of 2007)? As far as I can tell, the files only list when they were last updated, which is usually when they were last played. That date is useless to me.
I may have to just back up EVERYTHING all over again, but it would be nice to just have to back up the latest files.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure it's simple and I'm just overlooking something...

Hello. Since I'm normally the person in need of the technical help and not doing the helping, there's a chance that what I'm about to tell you will be wrong. But, I figured there's a possibility it could be useful anyway, so here we go:
When you pop in a DVD and click "backup to disk," there's an option to select only files added since the last backup. Since you said you do in fact backup to DVDs as well as your hard drive, I believe this should work. Itunes should be able to tell which files have been backed up yet.
Hope it helped.

Some of us have our enture itunes library backed up on CD/DVD - what a waste of time and effort as now presumably you can't use these discs to restore itunes on a new computer! WHY NOT APPLE?
Very unimpressed with itunes 10.5/ios5 - wifi tracking apps have been removed from the store (and won't function in ios5), it's impossible to sync photos (I have spent a whole day trying to sync my iphone 3GS with itines 10.5) to no avail and now, no CD backup facility.
I have never had problems with apple before - I was thinking of upgrading my whole system from PC to Mac but now I am doubtful - if this is typical of apple software, I will stay with windows!

  • Back up itunes library

i've backed up itunes library then went back to update cd using option( only back up items added or changed since last back up)using an unformatted disc or formatted i get messages : please insert isert blank disc or disc is not blank. so either way i can't update the disc. the ony way i found to do it is to use a formatted disc and go to source folder and copy from there. not ideal.

If you want to back up everything to an external drive, copy the entire iTunes folder.
Or you can use any backup program to do the same.
Is it also possible to back everythign up in MP3 format to a CD or DVD?
iTunes prefs -> Advanced - Burning.
    Set to Data CD/DVD.
Create a Smart playlist where Kind contains MPEG audio file.
    Click Burn.

  • Moving Backed Up iTunes Library Back To Newly Formatted Laptop Question.

I've saved all iTunes library files plus music to ext hdd. How do I move everything back so it will be like it was before I moved it? Links to help docs will help.

I have the same problem. Seems like APPLE needs to address this issue on its next update, if that's possible.
I got a new, bigger HD and transferred all itunes music files to the new HD. I did a copy paste of all the folders that represented individual CDs. For some reason, I was unable to transfer the entire "iTunes Music folder" that contained all of these "individual CD" folders.
Itunes cannot locate the files on its own. I've already made sure the letter drive is the same. I can locate the files but Itunes cannot.
BUT, Itunes CAN locate files that are MPEG-1 Layer 3 Audio! Itunes cannot locate MPEG-4 Audio Files, many of which are bought CDs that I imported into itunes.
    A solution would be super!
    Thanks

  • Backing up iTunes Library

Excuse me if this is a duplicate.  This web page, took my entire question with details, when I click post, said there was an error and deleted it.  I think.  I can't find it.
I am trying to understand doing back ups and restores of the iTunes library.
I keep Time Machine running with the iTunes library in its directory of directories to scan.  So I should have a back up of the entire iTune library.  If a file gets deleted, I presume I would restore it like any other file from Time Machine.
I was thinkinig of making a basic full backup of the iTunes library for several purposes.  I was going to use DVD-R but then I realized that i"m dealing with over 300 GB of files and iTunes estimates 60+ DVD-Rs will be needed.  So now I'm considering an external hard drive to which I would copy the iTunes directory and all of its contents. Then I would 'eject' the HD and store it safely.  From this drive I should also be able to copy back any files that are lost.  I should also be able to make a copy of the library for my MacBook to run iTunes on there.
One thing I wonder about, if a file (song, TV show, etc) gets deleted in iTunes by an iTunes delete (rather than a Finder delete from the iTunes library by mistake).   Is putting the file back enough or does more need to be done to get iTunes to 'see' the file and put it into the library it displays?
Are there any other issues or hints that I should know about?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

If the file was deleted through iTunes, you would add it back into iTunes just as you would any new file. You can't just move it into the folder in the iTunes library because, when you delete through iTunes, the database entry for that file is deleted.
I hope that answers your question.

  • Size of iTunes library question

When I am in iTunes and select library, it give me the total number of songs and the gigabytes (in my case assume around 9500 tracks and 43G). However, when I get info on the iTunes folder in my music folder and get info it shows 100G. Is this right? I am trying to back up my music and it appears it is taking up 100G on my LaCie drive.

What is shown in iTunes is the total for what has actually been added to the iTunes library. What is shown in the folder is what is actually in the folder and not everything in the folder has to also be in the iTunes library.
For example, you can delete songs from the iTunes library but answer NO when it asks you if you want to move the files to the trash/recycle also. If you say no, then the files stay on the hard drive in the folder but are no longer in the iTunes library.
So to answer your question, yes, it is completely possible to have the iTunes library be one size and the iTunes folder to be a completely different size. They are not synchronized together.

  • Backing up itunes library to pexternal drive v. CD

I'm a new mac user and very confused about most everything... question - can i back up my library to a portable harddrive, or does it only go to CD (it seems). What about DVD?
    Thanks!

can i back up my library to a portable harddrive
Not through iTunes. Find the library location from the iTunes preferences and drag it to the external drive in the Finder. If you haven't changed its location, it's in the Music folder of the Finder's sidebar.
    What about DVD?
Yes, if you have a compatible drive.

  • Backing up iTunes library on USD HD connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I am thinking about moving my iTunes library from my iMac to a USB hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme so that I can access it from my PowerBook without having to have the iMac powered on.
    Two questions:
    1. If I do this, can I configure Time Machine on my iMac to back up the library that is now located on the shared USB drive?
    2. If I share my library in this way, will I be able to add content from both the iMac and the PowerBook?
    Thanks

  • Updated apps on devices not syncing back to itunes library?

Before the questionable "upgrade" to iTunes 11, I had no problems when I would update apps directly on one of my devices, and whenever it later synced to my iTunes on my MBP, it would automatically update those apps in the library.  I have two iPads, one iPhone 5, and an iPod Touch 5th Gen.  So, for example, I could update apps on my iPad 3, and when I synced it to my MBP, iTunes would update the files in its library. Then, when another device synced, it would get the updated app.  No need to download individually to every device from the App store.
Ever since the iTunes 11 upgrade, though, this no longer works.  All I did was update, made no changes.  But I can update apps on my iPad, sync it to my MBP, and the apps aren't updated on the MBP anymore.  So when I sync the other devices, they don't get the changes.  If I do the updates from within iTunes, it'll go out to all the devices when they sync still, but the updates on the devices are NOT updating the itunes library even when synced now.
I don't know if there's another new setting somewhere that I'm missing that has to be checked now for this to happen, I've been looking around and don't see anything that seems to apply.
I'm not even going to go into the flakey WiFi sync issues where it's totally random whether it'll see any of the devices or not until I go through random power cycles on them - another "feature" I never had problems with in iTunes 10...  I'd almost revert back to 10 except there ARE some features I do like with 11...
Thanks for any ideas or help.

I was having an issue syncing iTunes to my iPad (original, iOS5), and the above suggest didn't make a difference. But it turned out my problem was I didn't have enough free space on my iPad, and I wasn't seeing any error message explaining it.
I just wanted to add this detail, in case some else has an issue syncing apps for this reason.

  • How Can I Roll Back my iTunes Library?

I'm guessing it may no tbe possible at all, but here goes.
What I would like to do with my music estate is roll back my current iTunes library file, automatically updated to iTunes 11 when updated on MPBr when this was my only PC using iTunes. Now I have three and some iOS devices too. My library has been moved from windows machines to macs and is several years old and has received 100s of hours of tweaking to get it just right.
Now my server is a PowerPC mac and I can only go as far as iTunes 10.6.xx, I want this to be always on and share the library with other PCs accross home sharing (i will sync iPhones over the wi-fi with this PC too, though it may not play with iOS7, so perhaps not).
I want to see the iTunes library on the macbooks, probably through Home Sharing, I also want to be able to sync the iphones, but only have a single copy of the music files on the server. is this possible? This will just be for when out of the house as I can also use home sharing in the house for music.
    Thanks

You say you want to do this with multiple devices.  Let's say you have a new iPhone 5 that requires iTunes 11. You will not be able to sync that if your base iTunes is iTunes 10.6 since your hardware will require at least whatever version of iTunes was current at the time of purchase.  You're seeing this with your iOS7 phone.  Anyway, unless all your hardware is old enough to use the lowest version of iTunes you need to run, you may be out of luck.  You cannot share the library.  Sharing media is different, and relatively easy, but it will be complex to ensure all the multiple libraries are kept up to date.
You also can't roll back iTunes libraries to earlier versions unless you kept a backup of your library from the point to which you wish to revert, or it is still in the previous libraries folder.

  • How to back up iTunes Library

How do I back up my iTunes library to an external hard drive (my backup drive)?

Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.

  • How do I back up itunes library to an external hard to free memory on my Macbook?

I have just noticed that a majority of my memory is being used by my itunes library. I was told that I can transfer and use an external to free up space on my macbook.I am in need of some type of step by step or a good link to walk me through it.I don't want to lose any of the movies or music I have accumulated, I am fairly new to the Apple world and just need some beginner help. Thanks

    Nah that's fine I think.
The other thing to make sure of, is that you aren't doubling up on your music/video/podcasts.
If you have a neat folder where all your stuff is great. But if you have set itunes to Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library, then there is going to be 2 copies. Your original, and your copy, as far as I can remember.
    You should double check that.
Because your backups will be backing up twice as much.
Also note, time machine backups back up all files that have been changed. If you are downloading a 5GB movie, if you download an extra 4MB and do backup again, it will backup another 5GB file.
I always have my download folder as not part of the backup due to this.
You could also add a 2nd HDD in your Macbook: http://eshop.macsales.com/owcpages/datadoubler/
