Backing up LR DB & pictures on ext. HD

Hi, I already checked the Forum but could not find a real answer.
I have my picture on my built in HD and on an external HD. If I want to use the external HD INSTEAD of the internal do I have to rescan all pics on the external and than use that new DB or is it possible to just copy the pictures AND the LR DB on the ext. HD and they will be found on their new location. Is that understandable?? I hope so!
My intention is to copy DB and pics external without having to rescan the photos into a new DB and to be able to use the copy.
Regards from Germany
Stephan

One thing I've started doing is putting all my photos inside the lightroom catalog folder. This way I can move them anywhere I want by just moving the catalog folder itself (without any changes or rescanning). Here's what my catalog folder looks like:
for my "sports" catalog:
Catalogs\
Catalogs\Sports\
Catalogs\Sports\Sports.lrcat
Catalogs\Sports\Sports Previews.lrdata
Catalogs\Sports\Masters <--- where my master photos for the catalog live
Catalogs\Sports\Masters\2007 <--- photos organized by year
Now, inside Lightroom, I've added the "Masters" folder as the root of my folder hierarchy. I've had no problems working like this.
Anyone else?

Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Type "move itunes library from pc to mac" or similar into the google search bar.

  • Recent convert to Apple. Previously, I backed up my family pictures from PC to an external hard drive,  a WD MyBook 3T. I can view the pics on my Macbook Pro, but I can't add new pictures. I'm sure this is a format issue, any easy way to correct it?

    Install NTFS 3G

If you were going to be reading and writing to a NTFS System Partition, you might have to worry about the instability messing up the operating system.  However, you are reading/writing from a non system, backup device so you don't have to worry about screwing up an operating system.
I would still temporarily move my data to another device and reformat the drive for Mac OS X Extended.

  • Is it possible to revert back from iPhoto to Pictures?

Too be quite honest I have never really liked iPhoto and especially when you sync it with the iPhone and iPad etc. Is it possible to revert back to just using Pictures?
If this is possible I would like to be able to export my iPhoto album into Pictures and then delete iPhoto.
    Cheers and Happy New Year!!

    What is your iPhoto version?
In iPhoto '11 you would need to export your iPhoto events, one by one, to folders in your Pictures folder.
Use the command "File > Export, Kind Original" to export the original files you imported to iPhoto, and use the command "File > Export , Kind Current" to export your edited versions.
To find out, which photos have been dited or not, define two smart albums (File > New > Smat album) with the  rules:
         Photo is not edited
    and the other one:
         Photo is edited
This way you can make sure to export all edited versions as well and not only the originals.

I forgot to back-up my information (pictures, excel documents) on MAC before installing boot camp and Windows.  I am mid-way through the process, at the point where I need to install the drivers. Will i be able to retrieve my documents on MAC and finalizing the Windows 7 installation (for the 1st time) or not?
I am worried that  may lose my information... Appreciate any feedback! Note: already half-way in the process of installing!

Yes, IF you picked the right partition, as in the Boot Camp partition. If everything is done right you should be able to boot into the Mac side.
If you already booted into Windows and are at the point of installing the Boot Camp Drivers your already done installing Windows! Yea! All you need to do is just install the drivers and everything should work normal.
The Windows partition and the Mac partition are seen as two different HD's now as far as the computer knows.
You can use the Boot Camp control panel in Windows to boot into the Mac side and the Startup Disk in System Preferences on the Mac to switch to Windows. If you can't then press and hold down the Option key untill you get the boot screen.

If you are the account owner, you can access the last year of calls records and the last three months of message summary (date, time, number texted, there is no where to see the text context) through your online account. Click on the HOME Tab once logged in and choose PRINT BILLS and then click on the pull down menu to choose any invoice for the last twelve months to view.

how do I get back my photo stream pictures which I accidently deleted? I cant remember whether I have back up or not.

If they aren't in Photos>Photo Stream, then they are deleted and cannot be recovered. Try restoring from a recent backup that has those photos.

  • Since I've updated my IMac to Yosemite, my screensaver preferences will not stay on IPhoto, it always reverts back to National  Geographic pictures.  Anyone have this problem?

I have an IMac from early 2009.  I've updated the OS X to Yosemite to 10.10.1 and since I've updated it, my system screensaver preferences WILL allow me to set the screensaver to IPhoto, but after a few minutes, it always reverts back to National Geographic pictures.  I tried putting ALL 18,000 of my pictures into a separate folder and choosing THAT folder for the screensaver, but again - it reverted back to the National Geographic pictures.
Is there any way I can set my screensaver preferences to IPhoto pictures?  Am I missing something?  Thanks for any input or suggestions.

Your photos are in the iPhoto Library, not in the iPhoto application, and the iPhoto Library should be in the Pictures folder.  Is your iPhoto Library there? Did you migrate it to your new MacBook, or are your photos missing?
The iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder should be showing an icon like a fan of pictures:

  • Time Machine Didn't Back-up iPhoto 11 Pictures

My iMac (running Snow Leopard) recently froze up while working . I rebooted the computer and got a white screen.  I have read several threads on this topic but nothing has work (I think my hard drive is shot).  I went to install my time machine backup onto my iMac's hard drive to get all my data back.  Just before I did this, I looked at the most recent backups and noticed that my iPhoto library was empty.  As I went back in time, it became apparent that I had iPhoto back-ups until the month that I installed iLife 11 (with iPhoto 11).  After this date, it looks like none of my pictures are available.  This is almost 12 months of data!
Am I missing something or do I really not have a backup?  Any help would be appreciated.

It almost sounds like you only did a single backup.
If that's true, and iPhoto was open when the backup ran, Time Machine may not have been able to back up your photos. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4116
Unfortunately, Time Machine does not send any sort of warning message when that happens. Apparently, Apple expects you to do frequent backups (Time Machine will do them hourly if it can), so if they get missed one time, it can catch up on subsequent backups.
That's another reason many of us recommend keeping "secondary" backups. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some suggestions.

  • Lost all contacts, pictures, and videos on ios 7, syncing iphone to itunes/icloud how do i restore it back, lost all contacts, pictures, and videos on ios 7, syncing iphone to itunes/icloud how do i restore it back

I updated itunes 11.1.5 and I accidently restored all my settings back to my old phone that was backed up onto my computer, I lost everything that was set up on my phone, contacts, pictures, videos, emails...etc.. how do I get my old setup back without doing a factory data reset?

Restore the device again using the most recent backup.
If there is no more recent backup and the pictures were not copied off the device prior to the original restore, they are gone.  Same goes for videos taken with the device.
Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service, simply sync them back.
Any content acquired from iTunes should be on iTunes on the computer, simply sync it back.

  • Will new backups erase previously backed up files and pictures on icloud?

I have backed  up my iPhone to iCloud's. If I erase my camera roll so I can have room to take more pictures, will the next time I back up my phone erase previously backed up pictures that's already on icloud? Or will it just add new pictures to icloud?

I'm not trying to restore my iPhone. I wanna keep adding pictures to my icloud. Just wondering if new backups add new pictures and data to icloud storage or does it simply replace the previous backed up info to iCloud's. I don't have a laptop that's why
As you say, effectively,"the backup simply replaces the previous backed up info to iCloud".
If you want to permanently save your photo use a cloud-based service like DropBox. The photos will be saved and accessible.
