Backing up mac backs up windows files thru parallels?

Do I need to backup my Windows files & programs separetly from my Mac backups. Currently using Time Machine, but out of space on my current EHD (500 GB).  Planning to purchase a larger EHD (2-3 TB?). Any suggestions? Will Time Machine automatically back up my Windows files & programs enough for reinstallation if needed, or should I be backing them up separately? It seems to take a lot of space, or better to make files of each with essentials on the EHD? Thanks, PSA

As I said, you can quite likely restore the entire virtual machine from Time Machine. If that's enough for you, and if you can afford a backup disk large enough to handle the additional load, you can certainly stick with Time Machine. If you want to be able to restore selected Windows files, you need the granularity of a backup program that is aware of individual Windows files; Time Machine is not.
A note from the Parallels help files (version 8):
Warning: Time Machine backups can guarantee safety only when your Parallels virtual machines were stopped or suspended during the backup.
I don't know whether it's available in version 7, but version 8 includes a program Parallels Mounter that can be used to access individual files in a virtual machine's Time Machine backup. This, and the fact that Parallels now splits virtual hard drives into 2GB stripes by default makes my recommendation somewhat obsolete, but not entirely. Using Parallels Mounter requires some steps that may make some users uncomfortable, and changes in the virtual machine may not be confined to one or a few stripes at a time.

  • Using Time Capsule to back up Mac OS and Windows XP

I am running Mac OS and Windows XP on my MacBook Pro using Bootcamp. What operating system should I use to install my Time Capsule so I can perform backups from both operating systems?

Hmmm... Time Capsule is a wireless router/HDD combo device. You must be talking about Time Machine. Time Machine is Mac OS X 10.5.x only. It will not backup your BootCamp partition. You may need a third party app (e.g. Winclone) to back up your XP partition. Your TC HDD should be accessible from your XP OS, so you have the hardware to back up to.

  • How to get rid of Windows files under Parallels

After loading and running Windows XP via Parallels, I've decided the virus risk is not worth it for me. My question is how do I get rid of all the Windows files? I've uninstalled Parallels using the Parallels uninstall function on the Parallels disk. Is that it or are there Windows XP files somewhere on my hard drive?
    Thanks

    Hi Jason!
I believe that should be all you need to do but a better place to ask would be the Parallels forums. Have a look here <http://forums.parallels.com/>.

  • Get back to MAC OS from windows 7

I have only windows 7 on my macbook pro. and when I insert the DVD OS X installation, it wont boot and I hold down the option or C key, it won't boot.
Even I tried by a flash memory and restored it from OS X Installation and it booted, but when I selected it, stuck at same screen.
any one know how to fix it?

You don't need Mac OS, fine to have Windows 7 only.
I do that, and never said Mac OS was needed, only that the Apple device drivers, hardware abstraction, drivers to enable network, graphics and other things. And for that you need OS X DVD to get started to insert those into Windows - that is all.
Otherwise it is pretty easy, but you might want to trade in for ThinkPad or something else. Or invest $30.
YOU have to install drivers - I guess it may seem like more work. Or if the OS is all done and pre-installed for you.

  • Is it possible to do an image file restore in a Mac Mini running Windows 7 in Parallels?

I recently purchased my first Mac, a Mac Mini.  It will have Windows 7 installed with Parallels.  I will probably sell my current Dell laptop Ebay prior to receiving my Mac, and have done a complete data and image file backup to an external drive.  My question is, when I am in Windows 7 on my Mac, will I be able to utilize Windows Restore to load my .iso image from my external drive?   I'd like to have it looking just like what I had on my old Windows machine.  I will have the 1TB fusion drive on my Mac, so space isn't an issue.  My goal is to eventually migrate most of my files and data over to the Mac OS, after which I will only keep a few programs such as Office 2013 in Windows.   Will I have to resize my Windows partition to accomodate this, or will Parallels or Mac OS do this automatically for me?  I'm totally new to the Mac world, so I apologize if these questions have already been answered elsewhere.

Not all virtualization engines are the same.  I would consult with Parallels if that is going to be the one of choice.

  • Using Mac Word for Windows software using Parallels

    Hello,
I'm using Parallels. I'm running a Windows program. The program has an export to Word function. I do not have Word on Windows, I just have  MS Office on the Mac side. When I Export to Word in Windows, it says I need to have Word installed. Is there a way to have my Windows software utilize Word using Office for Mac?
    Thanks!

Sorry, but no. Save the file on your Mac OS X volume if you have third-party software on Windows that enables you to write to a Mac drive. Or find out if you really need to have Word installed in order to export a file from your program to a Word compatible file.

  • Installing Windows 7 thru Parallels

I installed Parallels, am am starting to install Window 7 (Professional). Do I use the 32 bit or 64 bit disc?

    Ask Parallels users?
Some want to dual boot, which requires installing Windows natively on its own partition, and then connect to that in Parallels.
Totally depends on your hardware (do you have 8GB RAM and quad core? are you running XP Mode?
Assuming this was retail, why Pro to begin with, and not Home Premium, or System Builder, which are all significantly less expensive. .EDU institutions provide Pro, but only in either 32 or 64-bit, no media ($extra) as ISO only.

  • Windows file sharing can no longer work after tiger upgrade

hi guys, ive been searching the web to find a cure on my problem for a long time now, but still no success, hope someone could help me out.
ok heres my problem, before the upgrade, file sharing with windows is perfect, with no problems at all, but when i upgraded one of our mac to tiger, windows file sharing is not working anymore, i cant connect or see my windows xp computer on the network and vice versa, windows cannot see my mac with tiger on the network.
Our other 2 macs here running in panther are fine( meaning, windows file sharing is working)
Now we've bought a new computer which is a mac pro with fresh install of leopard, i setup the windows file sharing, but i was surprised that i cant see my windows xp box too on the network, and vice versa, the pc cant see my mac pro too on the network, whats wrong with tiger and leopard file sharing???? please help me, im so frustrated cant make it to work. i know, my pc computer has nothing to do with it, coz i can still connect to a mac with panther os. hope someone can help me fix this... please..

This site has some information on file sharing and printer sharing between Windows and Macs for various combinations of OSs. The Leopard repository isn't quite as mature as the Tiger repository, but there's a lot of good information at this site. Hopefully, it will be helpful to you in resolving your Windows/Mac issues.

  • How do I choose how to set my Mac up for Windows compatibility?

I bought a new Macbook due to Vista fears. I started with a trial version of Office 2004. That has expired. I have heard there is software that enables Mac to use Windows simultaneously. Parallels is apparently not for intel-based Macs, and Bootcamp requires a reboot to switch over to the other operating system. Boot Camp also requires that I burn a copy of the software onto a disc, but my computer is not able to burn discs. I want to be able to run and access Windows files and programs and also be able to access PC applications (like Pokerstars, for example, which is for PC only), any advice would be helpful, I am new at this world of Mac.

    Parallels.

Parallels is ONLY for intel-based Macs.
but my computer is not able to burn discs
Yes, you can. All Macbooks have CD burning capabilities.

You need to install Windows on your mac either through Parallels (which creates a virtualized environment within OS X) or use Boot Camp to install Windows directly on your Macbook, as you would any other non-Apple computer.

    Welcome!
how I can restore my backed up Windows files (photos and music in my iTunes library) which ison an external hard drive to my Mac?
This may help:  OS X Lion: About Windows Migration Assistant (but it will make a new User Account on your Mac).
This might be better:  Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac
    In general, see http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/

Where the **** is the delete button?
Should be at the upper-right, next to the + key, depending on your keyboard.  In many cases, Cmd-X will work, too.

  • Would it be possible for time machine to back-up files from 3rd party software such as windows platform using parallel?

I'm wondering if it would be possible for time machine to back-up files from 3rd party software such as Windows XP using parallel software especially if it is isolated from mac?  Any advise would be greatly aprreciated.

Short answer - yes Time Machine will backup everything within the Mac OS system.
Longer answer - Parallels creates a pvm disk image "Parallels Virtual Machine" which Time Machine backs up.
Due to the changes to the pvm file Time Machine is unable to read the minor changes and will somtimes do a full backup of it each time Time Machine runs and can chew through Back up drive space quite quickly.

It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition.  Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot.  Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot.  If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that.  Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML.  If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again.  However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too.
