Backing up media from iPod.

How do I take the songs and videos from my iPod and back them up on a rewritable disk?

I have to ask a question first. Isn't the iPod content in iTunes on your computer? I'm asking because backups are usually done from iTunes, not the iPod.

  • ITunes 10 deletes 64GB of media from iPod

I just downloaded and installed iTunes 10. I then planned on syncing my 5th gen. iPod (80GB). Luckily, the new iTunes version has a preview of space use after sync. With each setting that I changed (e.g. syncing an additional playlist to my iPod) this space use preview changed from 1,8GB free space to 65GB of free space. So essentially, if I hit "Sync", iTunes 10 will delete all but a little of my media from my iPod.
Does that have to do with the fact that most my media is not stored anymore on my local hard drive? Did anybody else encounter this bug and found a way around it? If not, I will have to downgrade back to iTunes 9.

Talked to Apple support. Apparently, I am a very rare kind. I appear to be the only one still using a four year-old iPod and also the only one who moves files from his local hard disk once they’ve synced to the iPod. Support guy said he’d never heard of a problem like this and I’m supposed to leave all my media on my PC’s hard disk (which would thus be full five times over).
He told me to keep using iTunes 9 if that did what I wanted it to do and it’s what I’m doing now. Uninstalled iTunes 10, installed iTunes 9.2.1.5. Wouldn’t start, saying the iTunes Library file was created by a newer version. So I had to revert to an earlier version of the file (as far as I know only possible in Windows Professional). Now it works as before.
Hope my iTunes 10 problem will fix itself in upcoming versions as I can’t expect developers to have me in mind.

  • HOW DO I GET MY SONGS BACK TO ITUNES FROM IPOD?

I recently had an incident with my Macbook which lead me to erase and reinstall Leopard. Obviously everything whats erased including my itunes songs. All of those songs are still on my iPod, so how do i transfer them back into my iTunes? I have the same login info and account. Shouldnt it recognize my iPod and allow me to just drag the songs back in? Help is much needed... thank you to all!

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Problem removing backed up files from iPod

I backed up a lot of files from my macbook to my iPod classic. When connected to iTunes, they appear under "other". The "other" files are about 55GB. I don't need the backed up files any more, but can't find them listed anywhere when I view my iPod content in iTunes. Plus, I don't think I should delete ALL the files under "other" because some are necessary for normal operation of the iPod. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!

    Hello Frank,
You will have to navigate to these files from within a Finder window. You can do this by clicking on your iPod's icon on your desktop.

  • Is there anyway to pull back deleted photos from ipod touch?

My son just deleted some of his photos from his ipod and he wants them back.  I have no idea if this is possible.

    Deleted what photos?
Photos taken with the ipod?  If so, then no you cannot get them back,  unless you had synced ( and therefore backed up) the ipod when the pics were on the device.  Then you may be able to restore to that backup.

  • Help importing music back to Itunes from Ipod

My Windows 7 computer crashed and needed to re-install windows.  As a result lost all music loading into Itunes (most of it not purchased through Itunes).  I need to know how I can transfer the music from my Ipod back to Itunes.  In the past when connecting the Ipod it automatically starts syncing with Itunes so if I connect it now I assume all the files on the Ipod will be deleted since they are not on Itunes now.  Please help me retrieve all my content and import it back to Itunes.

  • Backing up music from iPod Classic

I have about 140 GB of music on my iPod Classic 160 GB. I just bought an external HD to back up all my music. What's the best (easiest) way to get it all on to the external HD? Is it possible to transfer it all directly from the iPod to the HD? In iTunes, I have "Disk Use Enabled" checked, but it is grayed out.

My other option, I guess, is to use Senuti to import it all back into iTunes (a few GB at a time) and put it on the external HD
Why can't you use Senuti to transfer the music from your iPod directly to the ext hard drive in one go rather than a few GBs at a time?
Choose the location of your transfer by going to Senuti/preferences/transfer and choose the default location.

  • Backing up music from Ipod touch

Is there a way to backup music purchased from itunes on ipod touch to itunes? I just spent $2 buying a song on Itunes from the ipod touch and I synced it and it never showed up on itunes. Syncing it didn't show up on itunes. I had to do a restore and now it's gone.

    Hi
    In iTunes go
    File > Transfer Purchases
I think this can be set to automatic somewhere as mine seems to ask if I want to straight away on connection.
Go to you purchase history and "report a problem" to try and get your song back.
    Good luck,

  • Get info sync'd back to PC from iPod Touch after system restore.

I use Windows PC and Mac Mini sharing same monitor. A virus on the PC constituted a system restore....and would like to sync contacts and photo's back to PC. Is that possible and (if so) how?

also, (same reference) is it possible to sync contacts and photos from the PC- iPod Touch to the info or itunes on the mac side?

  • Any way to view backed up notes from iPod touch?

I accidentally deleted a note on my iPod touch, but just remembered that it'll probably be in the automatic backup from when I last connected it to my PC.
Is there any way of parsing the backup data to read the note? I don't really care about actually restoring it to the iPod, I'd just like to read it. Perhaps someone's written a 3rd party utility for this? Or maybe the data is in plain text somewhere in the backup files?
Alternatively, is there any way of just restoring this one note without blatting over all other content on the device? If I restore, will it delete more recent notes, or just re-add the older ones from the backup?

if i remember, i read that the notes will not backuped or so. My way is, using the email button in the notes app to send important things to my email account and store them.
second question ... yes were are a lot of third party "productivity apps" in the App-Store to solve your problem in different way, local or throught the web.
