Backing Up Media

Hello
I'm not sure if this question can be answered here. I've already posted a similar question on the hardware forum; I'm an experienced FC user who believes in backing up media on a regular basis. I use 'Super Duper' usually with good results. I always use external drives, (several), for scratch disk and related media files. I do not 'Daisy Chain' & all drives have been formatted properly. I use 'Disk Warrior' for maintenance - I work in Tiger 10.4.11 - please see other stats.
I recently discovered deleted media files that were more than likely corrupted or deleted from poor communication using a Firmtek/SATA2ME4E. Why have I concluded this? Because the missing files were captured and stored (via this SATA card), and later backed up using the same SATA card. I back up using 'smart update' in Super Duper which looks for differences in the data, then backs them up. So unfortunately I backed up the file directory with the deleted files not knowing these files were missing until I tried to open a FC project.
How do I avoid this in the future? I guess one way is to check all files to see if anything is missing before back up. But this also seems like a rather lengthy process considering all the data I have stored.
I don't see any discrepancies/deletions/corruptions in the other files that are connected thru 800FW connections. I realize the Firmtek/SATA2ME4E card gets good ratings, and SATA is faster, but I don't know if I can trust this particular Firmtek/SATA2ME4E. I may replace it with another FW800 multiport.
Just wondering if anyone else has another idea to prevent this from happening again.
Thanx

The way to do it with speed adjusted clips is to export the clip as a Self-Contained QT and then replace the original in the timeline.
As far as LT files go I think they should be all right as long as they are text only. I'm not sure as I rarely use them. You can export your LT project as a QT also and plug that in. I've been burned before with Motion files because FCP only MM's the project file but if used anything for a background or any graphics those are not copied. Again you can just export them as QT's and replace the project file with your exported file.
Or you can also copy over any media used in your LT or Motion files manually. Then open your MM'ed project. When you do that your Motion project file in the timeline will appear to be offline. You just control click on it and open in the editor. Then reconnect them within Motion or LT.
This is where being organized with file storage really comes in handy.
It can be very simple once you get a system in place and know about the pitfalls. I've been able to make it work very effectively as I work with over 3 years worth of material that I revisit often.

  • Does FCPX write metadata back onto media files?

Does FCPX write metadata back onto media files? Compaired to Premiere or Prelude which does.
If so, are keywords and roles considered metadata that is written into the media?
    Thank you in advance,
    DKG

    I beg to differ.
I have *my* media, that is stored in *my* hard drive, and may linked at by different projects and events, I don't want any software to go behind my back and change it. Metadata is just about as important as data, and clips are different, and *separate* from media files. It's fine that FCP X attaches and makes great use of metadata for clips, it's wrong if it messes with metadata in the media files.

  • HOW CAN I GET MY DATA BACK ON MEDIA CARD AFTER WIPING DEVICE

please help, i wiped my device clean then did a back up and everything was back except the things i had on my media card. how do i get it back?

When  you wiped your device, there is an option which you must check in order to wipe your Media card, did you have that checked or unchecked?
I am afraid that the Media Card in included in the backup of the device memory.

  • Exported avi's flicker between 4:3 and 16:9 when played back in media player etc.

Using premiere pro 1.5 on a windows XP..... never had issues until recently.. always shoot with xl-2 in 24p... when the AVI is exported (microsoft dv avi ntsc, or sometimes 24p advanced) and I watch it in windows media player the video flickers back and forth between widescreen and standard... seems random....sometimes the exported videos will play ok... any ideas what's up?  thanks!

    hmmmm

dv avi ntsc is 720x480 and it sounds like you have mixed assets in your project...when that flickering happens.  720x480, whether it is 4:3 or 16:9 does not have square pixels..so if some of your assets are based on square pixels you'll get some weird stuff going on ( if your program monitor is set to "fit" it will look OK on timeline maybe, but on export wont ? )...maybe try program monitor at 100% instead and see what stuff looks like before you export...fix the mixed media stuff ?  You using still images ? is that what flickers diff size ?
...need more info re: assets in project, export settings
ps. you might try ms avi ( not ms dv avi ) and adjust settings as per your project and try that export instead ( choose same renderer you use in project or lagarith or some lossless codec )

  • Advice for backing up media - Blu Ray? Anyone try it?

I am currently using external drives to back up lots of video and was wondering if anyone has tried using a Blu Ray burner to do this? Not sure what the data limitations of the disk are? Are there external ones? Would you recommend it or wait a bit longer?
    Thanks.

Absolutely, original tapes, along with a project in which they've been properly logged and captured, are the best form of backup.
But not everyone works with DV sources, and not all of our source material is batch-re-capturable.
For instance, I work with an agency that reps touring bands, and a lot of the source material I get is on DVD video. I have to rip and extract the video (to which the clients hold the rights) and import it. At this point, whiile I could theoretically repeat this procedure and get a file almost identical, it still isn't frame accurate and would require some reworking to rebuild any project if teh media were lost.
I agree Blu-ray isn't cost-effective yet per GB, and DVD-5 requires a lot of time and patience to archive. But it's still a good, safe way to back up material like this, IMHO. To steal Shane's example, drop a DVD and a hard drive from a foot off the ground and see which still works. I do archive to hard drives to keep things accessible, but I know too well how vulnerable that storage medium is to failure.
    my two cents.

  • PSE 8 Not Backing Up Media Files

I have PS Elements 8 (Windows 7 - 64 bit) with 9000 photos cataloged.  It's all fabulous EXCEPT when I do a backup (File->Backup Catalog to CD...) the backup ONLY contains the Catalog files, not the media files.  So the backup of my 27 GB of photos is only 200 MB.
My media files and my catalog files are both on the D: drive (2nd internal HD)... the Program files and Windows are installed on C:. I've tried Reconnecting (all files are connected) and Repairing the catalog (no problems found).  The backup runs just fine with no errors, it's just WAY too small.
I've tried backing up to the C: drive, the D: drive, and to DVDs all with the exact same result.
I've done a simple copy/paste of my entire folder to an external disk, so I DO have things backed up.  But I'd like to use the built-in feature so I can transfer the whole enchilada to my laptop without losing the links (laptop doesn't have a D: drive).
Anybody have any ideas why PSE refuses to backup my media?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Gary

I've been working every which way around trying to get this to work, and it just won't.  Your suggestion ("Method 4") kind of works.  But after screwing around with it the best I could get was "most" of the files reconnected with a lot of them reset to today's date for some inexplicable reason.
The resetting of the date is yet another bug.  The Reconnect command re-reads the metadata from the file, overwriting whatever is in th catalog.  If for some reason the date in the file doesn't match what's in the catalog, the date in the file wins.  And if the file is a format that doesn't support "date taken" metadata (or a format whose metadata PSE doesn't understand, such as PNG or video), then PSE will use the date-modified of the file.
But then why doesn't the "Repair" function work?  When I "Optimize" a damaged catalog why doesn't it throw an error message?
Repair and Optimize only perform a very limited set of low-level database operations -- they can't fix basic bugs in the program.
And how in the world does it allow me to run a "backup" without either actually backing up the files OR giving me an error message?  That's REALLY bad.  A feller would be pretty disappointed to try to run a Restore from that if he hadn't noticed the file size.
Yup, it's a bad bug.  For a number of reasons, I recommend that people with large catalogs use a general-purpose third-party backup:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Backing_up_your
And why DOES it think my D: drive is a removable disk?  Neither my system BIOS nor Windows shows it as "removable".  I've searched the Registry trying to find a spot to reset that for PSE without luck.  There should be a way to correct that (actually PSE just shouldn't make that mistake to start with, of course).
I believe the problem is caused by Windows, at some point in time, reporting to PSE that the drive as "removable".  PSE just records in the catalog what Windows tells it.  However, if later on Windows reports a different type (e.g. because you've upgraded to a new version of Windows), then PSE won't update the catalog.  In general, PSE's handling of multiple drives is abysmal, but some of that comes from the Windows legacy drive architecture, which is also a mess.
The only way to fix this is to get a low-level tool that can open the database file, e.g. SQLite Database Browser, and make the change.
    I'm anxiously awaiting version 8.1.
Adobe almost never ships updates to an existing version of PSE.  You have to buy the next version (e.g. 9), which ships each fall.

  • Using external drive via Time Capsule to back up Media

I installed a 500 GB Time capsule and connected an Iomega USB 2.0 1TB drive. My goal is to use the ITB drive as my media drive for my MB Pro. I want to use the drive as my library for iTunes and iPhoto. I want to use time machine to backup my MB Pro but since my photos and music are on the attached drive it is not backing up those items. I tried to put an alias of the iphoto library and itunes library but it is only making a back up of the alias's. Is there a better way to set this up so I can back up those items on my 1TB drive as well as the MB Pro? I set this up this way because the Media was taking up 80% of the 160 GB hard drive space and was causing a drastic slow down in performance.

I want to use time machine to backup my MB Pro but since my photos and music are on the attached drive it is not backing up those items.
Sorry ... Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device (Time Capsule) to another remote device (AirPort Disk) or vice versa.

  • ITunes is prompting me to update my iTouch (4th Gen.) to iOS 5, but it will erase all media. Is there a way to backup the music on my iTouch that was not purchased via iTunes? How do you back up media, if it is even possible?

I no longer have access to my other music. My computer crashed a month ago, and I did not have my newest music files backed-up anywhere else. I really don't want to lose that music.

I upgraded to version 5 on my IPad Wifi64 and now I can't find my music or podcasts, etc.  I don't want or need to upload everything to a cloud.  Does anyone know how I get to my music and stuff?
Oh...I can see the music when I connect to my computer.  I'm hoping that Apple isn't acting like Microsoft and eliminating features to push people towards something they want...like access to your information...or for you to only have things you buy from them.  Hopefully I'm over thinking it and there is simple answer...anyone know the answer?

  • How do I back up media on my iPhone 3G?

Apologies if this is too obvious. Up until now I've never used iTunes to sync my music with my iPhone. My mac doesn't have a lot of spare HD space, so I didn't want to use up 10-15GB in duplicated data. Right now I've realised (like everyone else) that iOS 4 delivers almost no benefit to 3G owners, but comes with a big speed penalty, so I'm thinking about upgrading back to 3.1.3. The problem is that I know this will delete all the music from the 3G, and reloading from individual disks is a very tedious process.
Question is, can I reverse-sync my 3G with iTunes? By that, I mean can I transfer all the music on my 3G back to iTunes?

OK, just went back to 3.1.3 and I've got my iPhone back! Much more responsive. Only downside... I lost one application that would only work with iOS4, and I lost about a month's worth of text messages because I had to go back to my last 3.1.3 backup. All in all, a highly successful operation.

  • Problem backing up media in itunes

ok so i bought a new computer and i'm using the "back up entire itunes library and playlist" feature to burn them onto a dvd and then using that to "restore from the disc" feature on the new computer. as explained in this lnk http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392
    here are the steps:
1: select back up entire itunes library and playlists
2: insert blank cd/dvd(i tried both cd and dvd dual layer and regular)
    3: itunes does a 3-4 minute scan
4: message pops up that the libarary is too big to fit on one disc and that if you wish to backup to multiple discs
5: i click on data option
6: then oddly enough a message pops up to insert blank disk and the previuosly inserted disk is ejected
i've tried all kinds of discs but the same thing happens
i done the basic common sense stuff like shutting off the computer etc and making sure the discs are in good shape etc
but when i try to burn just one playlists onto a regular cd it works fine
    please help
    thank you

    This is incorrect.
The tags are part of the song file itself.
Album art is not backed up.
If you wantto back up everything, simply back up the entire iTunes folder.

  • Backing up media from iPod.

How do I take the songs and videos from my iPod and back them up on a rewritable disk?

I have to ask a question first. Isn't the iPod content in iTunes on your computer? I'm asking because backups are usually done from iTunes, not the iPod.

  • Back up media

I seem to have made several back up usb drives. I was wondering if it could be cleared up what each one would be used for. I have one that seems to be a recovery disk, one that appears to be a boot drive and one that says it is a disc image. Do I really need all of them? When would I need each one, if I should keep them all? I think I know part of the answer, but I thought it would be good for others also if there was a clarification.

  • Why Offer iPhone OS update thru iTunes without first backing up media?

Makes no sense...offer an update to the OS and then after it tries to install
tells you of a problem with current iTunes software that will not allow it to continue. Then
it requires setting the phone to factory default and loosing any info between last update.

The first step in the upgrade process is to do a backup.
So what exactly is the problem? Restore the device and when prompted, select from backup.

  • I have forgotten my restrictions passcode and i dont want to lose any media on my iphone, or any apps, i am scared to back up my media for restore in future as these photos and videos mean a great deal to me, is there any way i could get around it? Thanks

I have forgotten my restrictions passcode and i dont want to lose any media on my iphone, or any apps, i am scared to back up my media for restore in future as these photos and videos mean a great deal to me, is there any way i could get around it? Thankyou if you can help; oh and last time i restored my iphone it didnt restore ALL the media only some and very improtant photos went missing :(

All media and apps on the device should already be in iTunes on the computer.
If you have forgotten the restrictions passcode, the ONLY option is to restore as new.
Then sync back any media, apps, contacts, etc back to the device.
You can not restore from backup as the restrictions passcode is included in the backup.
