Backing up MP3's to DVD

I can't figure out how to back up my huge collection of MP3's to DVD using my IMac. Have been a long time PC user (booooo) and am loving this thing but don't know if I need a seperate program or can I use something that came with the mac. Anyone know what I can do?
Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

you can also back up right from iTunes.
Make a smart playlist that selects all tunes in a given date range (or any other criteria). Diddle the end date until the playlist is less than 4.28 GB. Select your burn preference for a data disk. Burn it. Then set new date ranges until you are done.
Another hint once you have a complete backup. Make a smart playlist that starts from today. As you add music, let it grow until it gets to about 600 mb. Then burn in on a data CD. Then set the date to today again and let it grow again.

It could be that the CD player will only playback "Redbook" CD's from the previous position.

  • Backing up files onto a DVD+RW disc

I have backed up files onto a DVD+RW disc from my Mac.  However, when I go back to do another update, I get the message that I can't copy file because the disc is a read-only.  Why do I get this message?

It's foolish to backup to a CD or DVD, get yourself an External HD (they're relatively inexpensive) and use Time Machine. Please get one that is 1.5 to 2x the size of your internal HD. If you don't know how to use TM then simply look on YouTube and search for "Time Machine Tutorial" and you will find many videos.
The reason you get the error message is because writeable CD & DVDs can only be written to once, you cannot go back and add information. This make the practice silly and ineffective for backups.

  • Can´t back up from iPhoto to DVD. Unexpected error code 0x8002006E

I´ve tried to back up from iPhoto to DVD. I followed:
Create a CD or DVD by exporting
In iPhoto, select the photos, albums, or video clips you want to burn to a disc.
    Choose File > Export.
In the Export Photos window, click File Export, and then select your options. For best results, choose JPEG, Maximum, and Full Size. For more information, see Export a photo.
When you’re ready, click Export, and export the photos to a folder on your computer.
When the export is finished, quit iPhoto.
Click the Finder icon in the Dock, and then insert a CD-RW disc or a blank CD-R or DVD-R disc into your drive.
Drag the folder that contains your exported photos to the disc’s icon.
When the files have been copied, choose File > Burn Disc, and then click Burn.
The disc can´t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x8002006E)
    Am I missing something?
    Thank you

    I found this:
When burning a DVD, I also had the error 0x8002006E.  I found a SOLUTION that is not discussed in this forum. I tried the three different things that are listed in this forum (delete the finder file, reset PRAM, and try different blank DVDs), but those methods did not work.
I had to repair my internal hard drive.  I had to start my computer from my installation disc (version 10.5.4) (I turned on the computer while holding down "C" key with install disc in the drive).  Then, you have to go to Disc Utility (at top menu bar) and click on your hard drive then click repair disc.  After my computer repaired multiple problems, I restarted my computer from my main hard drive and then I could burn DVDs again.  Please let me know if you have questions.
    Is this the solution?

  • Can I get my M4A's back to MP3????

I've just bought a low cost aigo player as I'm about to walk to the North Pole so I don't want to risk destroying my beloved iPod....the problem I've just encountered is that I've tried to move some selected tracks to my new aigo & have found that iTunes is now in an M4A format, not MP3...is there anyway that I can convert the M4A's back to MP3 so that I can put them on my Aigo?????? Any help much appreciated...

If you go into your iTunes preferences, then select the Advanced tab, then select importing, you can change this to MP3 (of whatever bitrate you prefer). After you change this preference, hit OK to close the preferences and then select all of the M4A tracks that you wish to convert. With all those tracks selected, choose Advanced->Convert Selection to MP3.
This will convert all the M4A files to MP3.
    Hope this helps,
    Ben

  • Burning MP3's on DVD

Has anyone successfully burned MP3's on a DVD and were able to play them back on a regular set-top DVD player that claims to be able to play MP3's?

You can burn an mp3 DVD with Toast but it is an audio-only disc. In my case, I can't play an mp3 DVD on my DVD player.
You also can burn a "music DVD" with Toast 7 (or with Toast 6 if you also have Jam 6 - but it's features aren't as good). In this case the audio must be converted either to 48 khz LPCM (which is uncompressed like AIFF) or to 48 khz AC-3. Those are the audio formats that meet the video DVD spec. What's happening here is Toast is creating a video DVD that is all audio except for the thumbnail images and menus that display on the TV. By the way, the thumbnail graphic is the album art you have connected to the track in iTunes. You can change this in Toast. AC-3 likely will be smaller, not larger, than your MP3 files. However, Toast 7 gives you the option to set higher or lower bitrates for the AC-3 encoding.
I haven't yet created one of these in Toast 7. But in Toast 6 I did encounter some difficulty with some MP3 conversions. Toast would simply stall while trying to convert some tracks. Apparently there were defects in the file that weren't audible to me when playing from iTunes. I identified which tracks were the problem ones and used iTunes to create and AIFF copy. Replacing the mp3 with the AIFF fixed the issue.
I'm mentioning this because it does take time to create one of these music DVDs.

  • CAN I BURN MY MP3'S TO DVD & PLAY THEM ON CD MACHINE?

    My question is :
Can i back up my itunes library to a dvd
and then play the whole library on the dvd
    on an ordinary cd player?
I would like to back up my MP3 library to a portable &
playable format & am hoping that dvd's are essentially
very big cd's & will play on cd machines.
    Any advice most welcome.
    Thanks for your time.
    didier

No. If you burn just a data CD with mp3s on it, it will not play in an "ordinary" CD player. You would have to burn the CD as an audio CD. However, many modern CD players are not "ordinary", in the sense that they come with the ability to play mp3s. So it's quite possible that your CD player is capable of playing mp3 data CDs.
In any case, no CD player will be able to play mp3s stored on a DVD. A DVD player would be needed for that.

  • Creating MP3 (Not Data) DVD's in iTunes 8

I am wondering if there is a way to use iTunes 8 to create a MP3 DVD? I know how to burn CD's and DVD's, the problem is that iTunes 8 only allows Data DVD's to be created which puts all the folders and folder structures on the DVD. I want to be able to create a MP3 DVD with all the songs in the playlist at the top level of the DVD.
I can do this manually by dragging all my MP3's to the DVD, but this doesn't allow me to use the iTunes playlist functionality.
    Thanks.

Yeah, I tried it when it first happened. What happens is that the folder structure also gets written to the DVD which isn't a big deal normally. The limitation I have on my truck's DVD player is that it will only read 512 "files". When you write the DVD using iTunes 8 and the DATA DVD function it creates a folder for the artist, and a folder for the album, then the MP3 file.
My truck DVD see's these folders as "files" (for some reason) so essentially for every MP3 I write, I get two to three folders written also, and since my DVD player only will recognize the first 512 items, I end up getting about 150 - 200 MP3's recognized by the DVD player before it reaches that 512 limit and starts back over at zero.
To try and get around this, I have tried to write MP3's to the DVD by file name but the other problem I run into is that my DVD writer software does me the "favor" or writing these files in name, size, extension, or date last modified order. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to write these songs in the "playlist" order using anything other than iTunes or MusicMatch.
I'll keep on trying a few different ideas. Thank you for all your help.

  • Backing up MP3's to a storage device and keeping photo and info data intact

I have been recording older LPs and getting the album art from a collectible website. itunes stores these files in the library for the pictures I have added. Will these pictures carry over to a burned data/MP3 DVD and in the future be brought back on another computer?

    DJ Hot Wheel wrote:
Does the pic file become a part of the MP3 file size then?
Some of my pics are records that had been shot with a high end camera. I dont want the file being an extra 3-4mb each. This builds up fast.
Yes, if you paste the art in, it becomes part of the MP3 file. If you are using a JPEG from a website it probably adds 50-100 kB, but if you add a high quality file that you scanned or photographed, you could easily be adding 3-4 MB, as you note.
You might want to consider converting it to JPEG and shrinking the size.

  • MP3/MP4 CD/DVD freezes iTunes, then Mac

This has been a problem with both iTunes 10.x and now 11 as well. When I insert an MP3 or MP4 CD or DVD in my iMac, iTunes will hang when I try to import it, it won't eject, then the Finder and my whole system will hang.
Once I force-restart, the offending disc will mount and import just fine. Any clues?
    Running OS X 10.8.2 on a mid-2011 27" iMac.

I'll give the recovery partician a try, but I tend to think it's a hard/software conflict as both drives will lock up.
If this were way back in the day, I'd be looking for IDE bus device conflicts... I should run through the "unplug every external device" scenario and try again also.

  • Backing Up Library to DL DVDs

Hi All, apologies if this has been asked/answered before.
Is it possible, when using the 'Back Up To Disc' option, to use dual layer DVDs? Has anyone successfully done this? I can't find any information on this, but don't want to potentially waste one of my few DL discs if it isn't going to work!
Any help gratefully received, and thanks for taking the time to read this.
    Cheers
    Neil.

Burning an Audio CD converts the songs to CD Audio format and then burns them to the CD (the same format as a CD you would purchase at a store).
A Data CD/DVD burns the files as they are. So an mp3 file will burn to the disc as an mp3 file, an m4p file will burn as an m4p file, etc.
Data discs are obviously better for backup than Audio CDs.
