Backing Up Music On Your Hard Drive...Is It A Matter Of Synching Or Wh

You see, before transferring my music to my player, I edit the mp3's on my hard dri've (for length, sound quality, etc.). Once I'm completely satisfied, then I'll transfer them to my unit. So, for all intents and purposes, the files that are on my player are exactly the same as they are on my hard dri've. That being said, is there really a need to synchronize my player to my computer? It would seem that it would just duplicate the files I already have and just take up extra space on my hard dri've.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.
By the way, I keep all my mp3's in a folder titled (appropriately enough) "My MP3's".

It's actually a good idea to keep copies on your computer, in case something goes wrong with you player, and you need to RMA it, in which case you will lose all your music. St the very least, back your music up on CDs or DVDs. I made the mistake of deleting music after I transferred it to my mp3 player, and then ended up having to RMA it. Thankfully I had a partial backup on DVD, but I still lost a good portion of music.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
iTunes match won't automatically remove content from your computer, if you want to do that you will need to do it manually yourself.

  • Itunes wont open need help backing up music on external hard drive

My itunes wont open after upgraded to 8 , ive uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and quicktime and still wont work. i found a topic to possibly help me but i dont know how to tranfer my music to an external disk drive without being able to open itunes. i am getting so frustrated. please help

A usb hard drive that Windows sees doesn't need software for a simple back up.
Format the hard drive Disk Management, if it doesn't come already formatted, and then drag and drop the iTunes folder and whatever other data you want to back up to it.
What you're describing doesn't sound like something iTunes did. If you're having general install troubles you have another problem with your system and it's time for a little troubleshooting to find out what's really going on.

Had to reinstall Lion.  Backed up my music to an external hard drive.  When I plug in my iPod a prompt msg says it's synced w/another iTunes library and asks if I want to "erase and sync" (to what is now an empty library) or "Transfer purchases".  Do i "erase and sync" and re-add music from the hard drive once that's done?

You just need to tell iTunes where the library is located. If you want it back on your internal drive, copy the entite iTunes folder. Follow the instructions below.

  • How do I back up music to external hard drive

    Hi!
The recent loss of some music and the instablity of the iTunes program I have on my machine leads me to believe that I need to delete the program completely and then reinstall.
Instead of goign through the motion os burning 500+ songs to CD's, I'd like to back-them up to an external hard drive.
Is this possible? Will the crypto-license protection built in allow for something like that? If so, then how do I do it?
Did I miss the instructions on the main page as I only saw instructions on how to back-up to CD's?
    Thanks.

plug in your external harddrive via usb or which ever way you connect yours then use the backup facility and it will ask you where you want to back up to then click on the respective drive letter for your external hard drive.
alternativly you can open my computer double click on the external hard drive ( if only 1 internal hdd and 1 cd rom it should be the "e" drive ) and selct the itunes folder and right click then copy, cllick onto the external hdd and right click in the display window for your e drive and right click then paste it will then copy all the files to your external hdd

    Greetings to ALL,

I have a power mac g5 and a external hard drive. What i did was simply move the entire itunes folder over there and now I have 2 of the same library. If that makes since. All my songs can be played from either drive. I wanted it that way, so if something happens then I will always have my songs. I didn't do copy and all that just took the folder dragged it to the external drive and it copied all 45 gigs for me. Hope this helps.

  • Backing up music to external hard drive

How do I transfer my music from iTunes to an external hard drive so I have it saved there?

Click here and follow the instructions for permanent storage, or to create a backup only, click on the item in the Finder's sidebar named Music and drag the iTunes folder to the external drive.

how do i recover music from old computer. its broken and i did not have the music backed up on any other hard drive.

OK, well, seems like you need to lose the attitude if you really want help.
There are several ways to get music from iTunes on your computer to your device.
The easiest is to sync directly with iTunes by connecting your device to your computer, selecting the device, setting up your Profile pages, and then clicking the Sync button to sync.
First you want to open iTunes and under Preferences>Devices, make sure that you are not syncing automatically:
Make sure that box is checked.
Then follow the instructions in the article below for either your computer or your Mac to set up your Profile pages and to sync your music via iTunes:
    WINDOWS IOS SYNC ITUNES 11
iTunes 11 for Mac: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
You can also directly download music from iTunes to your device by going to the iTunes icon, going to "Purchased", and selecting the items that are not on your device that show a little cloud next to them. Click on the cloud and the music will download.
You might also want to familiarize yourself with your iPhone 5 manual. It has all the answers you cannot find on Google or by trying to just do it by brute force. If you would take a little time to read about your device and how to use it, you might not be so frustruated and unnecessarily snarky to people who are trying to help:

  • I just switched to Lion from SL, and am regretting it deeply, is there anyway to switch back to SL but still keep lion on your hard drive until you want it again?

I just switched to Lion from SL, and am regretting it deeply, is there anyway to switch back to SL but still keep lion on your hard drive until you want it again?
I hate to have paid for it and have it go away. Help please!

Start by creating a second partition on your hard drive:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Install Snow Leopard on the new partition:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Be sure to choose your new partition as the target destination.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 update. Any additional updates can be installed using Software Update.

where are my purchased movies through iTunes stored on my PC?  I need to back-them up on a hard drive and then I want to play them on my iPad

They're in the iTunes folder, in iTunes Media or iTunes Music depending on when your iTunes was first installed. The iTunes folder by default is in My Documents/Music.

  • I trying to backup movies that I have purchase from Iturnes onto a cd and my Macbook pro does not recognize any of the CD or DVDs that I tried,  nothing seems to work can I back up to a external hard drive?

I am trying to backup the movies and TV show that I purchase from Itunes onto a cd or DVD, and nothing seems to work.  I tried using CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW and they all failed. Is it possible to back up to an external hard drive instead of a CD?
    Tyler

I know this isn't a complete answer because I am not sure why or if your backups to CD/DVD are not working, but one thing I do know is yes you indeed can backup any of your iTunes Media (music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, etc.) to an external hard drive. In fact, it's recommended that you do this anyway (in case of a hard drive crash, computer being stolen, etc.)
You can manually back up your movies by finding them in your iTunes Media folder, or since you have a Mac you can just use Time Machine, which will automatically back up either your entire computer (or only certain folders and items if you want). It's pretty handy. I use a 1TB external and Time Machine to keep everything backed up including my iTunes

  • Why won't Time Machine back up onto this external hard drive?

I re-formatted a SimpleTech 320gb hard drive so it would erase the music and videos on it and format it for use with Time Machine. I thought it all went smoothly but then the initial back up which is about 91gb stops after it backs up about 22gb and says an error occured. No matter how many times I restart everything and try to back up more, it doesn't work. I've even tried using disk utility to erase it and that didn't work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

First, deselect the drive as your TM backup drive, then turn off TM. Now try this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Be sure to re-select the drive for the TM backup drive.

  • Backing Up Songs on External Hard Drive

I saved my iTunes music out to an external hard drive. However, when I go to My Computer/Documents and Settings/Owner/My Documents/My Music/iTunes Folder I notice that all of my music (iTunes Purchased and CD loads) is not saved and listed. My iTune Purchased songs are backed up, and SOME of the songs that I loaded into iTunes from CD aren't. All the songs that I purchased or loaded from CD are appropriately listed under the Music label on the iTunes Main Page, but they certainly aren't all backed up on the external hard drive. I'm puzzled. Any ideas on what the problem is?
