Backing up my iTunes library on an external harddrive

I tried uning the menu function for backing up my library, but that turned out to only be for CDs and DVDs. What do I need to do to back my entire library up to an external hard drive? Thanks.

Drag *My Documents/My Music/*iTunes folder to the external drive.
Or just use your regular backup program.
You do make regular backups of the important stuff on your HD, correct?

  • HT1751 if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back that up a few days later, can i backup the only newly added music without backing up the entire library again?

    hello,
if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back up the newly added music a few days later, can i do it without backing up the entire library again? or do i need to back up the entire library each and every time i back up to the external hard drive?

Just copy Users/yourusername/Music/iTunes (containing your library-files) to your external drive as well as that (extaernal) folder that contains all your audio-tracks.

I got a new computer and backed up my iTunes library to an external hard drive.  The external hard drive is not allowing me to access the drive.  I no longer have access to the old computer.  Is there a way to transfer the songs from my iPod touch to my new computer?

That's a bummer, didn't realize the exHD files were corrupt, esp if you have tried from another PC and not just this new computer.
You can get purchases from the itunes store transferred from an iPod using these directions:

If you want everything (meaning non-itunes songs, app data, photos, etc) you need to buy a 3rd-party ipod manager that support iTouch. Here is an iLounge article to start your research:

  • Migrating my Itunes Library from An External Harddrive to a NAS

I have a 20" IMAC and currently store my 350 GB Itunes library with roughly 6400 tracks on a 1 TB external Harddrive. I just purchased a 5 TB Network Attached Server that is attached to my wireless network. What is the best and fastest way to migrate my Itunes library from my external harddrive to my NAS? I am concerned that if I do it over my wireless connection it will take forever. I am also concerned that Itunes will get confused in trying to locate the files on the NAS. I have successfully used the consolidate library function in the past but am worried that it will not work with a NAS over a wireless connection. Should I try using a direct ethernet connection with the NAS hooked directly into my IMAC and then re-connect the NAS to my router? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

  • How do I restore my itunes library on my external harddrive after old harddrive died?

I used to have my entire iTunes library on an external drive. It started to fail so I subscribed to iTunes match and matched/uploaded around 13,000 songs before the drive finally died.
I have a new external drive now and would like to download all songs to it.
The problem I have is that iTunes thinks my whole library is still on the old hard drive and every time I want to listen to an album at home it says it can't find it. I then have to delete the album and download each song individually from the cloud. Once it is downloaded, it is then on my new drive and I can play it from then on.
So basically, I was to delete and download my entire library fresh so it is on my new drive but I really don't want to sit here and click on the cloud icon next to 13,000 individual songs.
    Is there an easier way?
I hope there is something simple I am overlooking. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I couldn't edit my original post so I replied to myself.
I think I solved my problem! I moved my itunes folder to destop and then moved my backed up one to the same folder/ I made a wrong assumption that I had to also move back my source music files (I bought nothing from itunes store they are just CD rips etc.) .

  • How do I back up my iphoto library on one external harddrive to another?

I have successfully created one external hard drive back up from iphoto library. I am trying to back up this first hard drive with an additional hard drive, so my iphoto library is saved in two external hard drive locations. As of right now every time I go to back up the iphoto library on my first harddrive onto the second, it recopies the entire library (which takes a deeply laborious amount of time!)  Is there a program that would recognize which photos have not been transferred and select accordingly? Apparently time machine does not operate between two external hard drives. Any feedback would be wonderful!

If you've set up Time Machine to back up your computer to it and haven't moved the library off the internal drive, it's already been done.
If you've set up Time Machine to back up your computer to it and have moved the library off the internal drive, ensure the drive holding it isn't excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.
If you haven't set up Time Machine, either turn it on or drag the iPhoto library from the Pictures item of your home folder to the Time Capsule manually.

  • How do I move my iTunes library to an external harddrive?

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to reload by CD collection into iTunes on an external drive.  In the past, I had been using iTunes for PC and the library became corrupted.  I would prefer to save the music to an external harddrive to save space on my MacBook's harddrive.  Once I load the music onto the harddrive, I want to be sure that my MacBook recognizes the library in the future.

Creating a new library on the external drive will add to confusion because now you will have multiple iTunes libraries.  For simplicity it would be best to move your entire iTunes library to the external drive, unless you have a very good reason for wanting to split media storage locations.  To move a library if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Importing iTunes Library from an external harddrive

Recently, I had to delete the operating system on my computer because I accidentally deleted a software application that could not be reinstalled individually. So before I reinstalled my operating system, I had to backup all the data on my computer. In particular, I put my whole iTunes Library on an external hard drive and I imported the folder into my Applications file. I have not figured out how to import the folder to my new iTunes library. When I want to listen to a song, I usually just go to the folder and click on the song and then it plays in my iTunes. Since I have like 1500 songs, I do not have the time to click on each song to import it into my library. How do I import the whole music folder into my iTunes library?

    Hey mate,
    Try this:
Close iTunes, then copy your backup iTunes Music folder to ~/Music, where '~' represents your home folder. Open the iTunes Library file within that folder, that should reopen iTunes, and your library should appear.
    Hope this helps!

  • How to copy everything from my ipod, back to my itunes library? Crashed external hard drive- containing all music/media that was linked to itunes.

My external hard drive crashed and that is where I had all of my music/media files.  I do have some content on another external drive, but not all (and not my movies, etc).
How can I copy everything, from my ipod classic, back to my itunes on my PC with Windows XP?

The media is laid out on the iPod in a completely different stucture to that used by iTunes. However, if all your files on the iPod have tags (i.e. are not wav files) then you can try the following:
Create a new empty library by holding down shift and clicking the icon to launch iTunes, then select Create. Choose a location with enough room for your media, ideally on the same drive letter your missing media folder used to be on.
Copy the contents of \iPod_Control\Music into the Automatically add to iTunes folder of the new library.
Move the resulting iTunes Media folder into the location that your current library expects to find it. (If you can't do this for some reason move on to the next step, then use my FindTracks script to reconnect your media)
Hold down shift and click the icon to launch iTunes, then select Choose and select your original library.

  • Can Time Machine back up my iTunes Library stored on external hard-drive?

Is it possible to set Time Machine to back up my iTunes music/movie library that is located on another external hard drive (in addition to backing up the other files on my iMac computer)?

If the drive is connected and not in the excluded list it should backup automagically

  • I backed up my itunes library to an external drive. It's 119 gb.It took about an hour. When I looked at the files it list the artists and albums but then says the files are empty. On the C drive of my own computer it says they are empty. Why would this be ?

When I open up my itunes library on my hard drive it says it contains 119 gb.I tried to look up individual songs under each album and artist.Every time I open an album it says the folder is empty.I exported the library earlier to an external hard drive. It took over an hour. When I look on that library it also says the files are empty, yet when open itunes and play songs they are all still there. Why doesn't the library list each song since it says it contains 119gb?

Niel, I tried that several times but the Choose Library screen never appeared.
    Then try again.
Make sure iTunes is not running.
    Hold the Option key.
Click the iTunes icon in the dock.
    Select Choose library...
Select the iTunes folder you copied to the external
ITunes would boot up like usual but the only songs listed were in the Cloud.  None of my Apps, Playlists, etc. appeared.
Because you moved the library and have not yet told iTunes to Choose the library you moved.
