Backing-up my playlists, top-rated, & favorites onto an external drive.

Hello Folks! I don't know if this posted earlier? If so, please disregard. If not, please help. I'll be backing up my iTunes library onto an external hard drive. From what I've read it's should be a rather simple process. Drag-and-drop, right? If I'm mistaken, please let me know before I begin? The question I have is how would I back-up the playlists, top-rated, and favorites so they stay intact? Would I use the same method? I have tons of playlists and have the other fields populated already and I don't want to start over.

Thanks!

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • How do I back-up Itunes music onto an external drive?

I wanted to know how I can back up my Itunes onto an external drive. I tried to back up but it will take about 9 discs to burn it onto. Can;t I just drop and drag all the songs onto an external drive?

"Choose Consolidate Library from the Library section of the File menu in iTunes".
I started this process and a screen popped up advising me this was irreversible and was I sure I wanted to do it. I clicked no until I could get further advice. If I do this, what is the outcome/consequences and why would they warn me?

  • I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

    Exactly what did you do?
    The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

  • Can somebody please advise urgently... I backed up my entire hard-drive of my macbook pro - just prior to installing osx mountain lion. I put everything into a folder on my desktop - then backed it up onto an external drive. Once this was done - i deleted

    Can somebody please advise urgently...
I backed up my entire hard-drive of my macbook pro - just prior to installing osx mountain lion.
I put everything into a folder on my desktop - then backed it up onto an external drive. Once this was done - i deleted the folder off my desktop - and  following this - things started to go all weird...pages hanging, the coloured 'wheel of death' appeared for ages. So i had to employ a 'hard-boot' restart - as i had not other options.
I'm pretty sure i made copies of of files/apps/folders etc - however not so sure now as i cant even start up my laptop!!!
Can somebosy please help me urgently??!!!

Got the exact same problem, and I also did this operation many times before, from 500Gb to 750Gb, and then from 750Gb to 1 Gb. Not My HD got a little such complaining about bad sectors when in windows bootcamp, but still runs fine though.
So I bought a new 1Gb drive exactly same drive as the one thats getting sick. I did the clone thing, with super duper, CCC, DU, but no matter it will not boot when i move the new drive inside the macbook…….**** thing exuse me, but wasted so much time.
Now I get this strange feeling that something must have changed in the macbook itself. Just wondering if this could be a EFI "mac bios" prevention thing, they made just to sell more new computers, when you can't improve or fix your old one.
If so, then its pretty scary. If not then I simply can't figure out why this suddenly becomes a problem for so many people, as I see so many posts about this!!

  • My mac mini does not boot, after backing the enire system onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Clone

My Mac Mini does not boot, after backing the enire system onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Clone. I had switched the start-up disk back to the original of course. Now all I see is the Apple logo. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Try disconnecting any external devices, especially hard drives
    and try rebooting.
If that doesn't help, then :
If you are running Lion, boot to the Recovery HD and run a
Repair Disk on the OSX partition.
If Snow Leopard, boot to the installl DVD and run Repair Disk.
Also, you may want to bookmark this:

Mac boot process and how to identify where problems may be.

  • I have backed up my lap top including itunes to an external hard drive, everything is on the external device, but I can't play my purchased movies from it?

I have backed up my lap top including itunes to an external hard drive, everything is on the external device, but I can't play my purchased movies from it?

Why can't the media be played?  Any errors?
Was it actually backed up to the External drive or moved to the external drive?  Sounds more like the latter which could potentially cause issues depend on how it was moved.

  • I tried to transfer itunes onto an external drive, now have serious probs.

  • Videos Onto an External Drive

So I have NO idea where to put this so I am putting it here.
I have a white MacBook and have had one for about a year or so (This September), I have finally gotten to the point where I am running out of space, gasp and I have to say it has to do with my Movie collection which is now close to 30 videos...
I am wondering if there is a way to get it onto my external disk without screwing them up... Since there is no easy way to drag and drop, I am wondering how even to begin.
    Thanks so much!

Let me ask this - on your Movies page, go into icon mode (top right of the iTunes window, the middle of the three icons), then, when you click, hold and start to drag a movie (make sure you're in icon or list mode), do you get an icon on your cursor with a little "1" in a red star?
If you do, can you at least drag and drop it onto your desktop?
If that works, what happens when you try to drag it, again from iTunes, onto the external drive?
Or, try dragging the new file from the desktop to the other drive. Does that work?

  • Is there a way to download everything (music, apps, downloads etc.) onto an external drive

Hi I'm looking for a way to download everything onto an external drive to free up my internal drive because its full. Any help?

Keywords, sometimes called tags, are words assigned to a photo based on the content - so, you could tag all your kids photos with their names, all the birthday shots with 'birthday' so to find all the shots of John's eighth birthday it would be
    Smart Album
    Keyword is John
    Keyword is birthday
    Year is whatver...
Some ideas about organising in iPhoto:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How do I save 2 iphoto libraries onto one external drive?

    Hi
I have an iphoto library on my MacBook Pro and I have an older library of different photos on my graphite iBook.
I'd like to store all my photos onto one external drive.
How can I do this without losing either library in the process?
I actually have the same question regarding music on iTunes.
    Thanks
    AS

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Do you want to merge these libraries into one? If so, then you'll need the paid version ($20) of  iPhoto Library Manager
It's the only way to merge Libraries while preserving all metadata, versions and so on.
Otherwise, simply rename one of the Libraries (so they don't overwite each other) and Copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External Disk. in each case.
To choose which library to open: holf down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location.

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

  • HT4914 My music is stored on an external hard drive. All music that I buy, whether from itunes or some other provider, automatically gets loaded onto my external drive. There is some music on my computer drive as well. Will match work in this circumstance

My music is stored on an external hard drive. All music that I buy, whether from itunes or some other provider, automatically gets loaded onto my external drive. There is some music on my computer drive as well. Will match work in this circumstance?

I followed all the instructions for consolidating my music into one folder on my external hard drive. (I'm struggling with this because my ext HD was renamed when I synched my iPod shuffle last night. The "E:" drive has now become the "F:" drive and all my songs have those dreaded exclamation points next to them. Exploring my computer, I found "My music" folders in two place on my C: drive and one place on my external hard drive... and the song list in each place is different.
    Argh.
So... following the directions in the article reference here, I attempted to consolidate all of my songs into one folder on my external hard drive.
But.. I checked the song list when the "consolidation" was complete... and MANY songs are missing. They're still on the C: drive, but don't appear to have been copied to the new folder on the ext HD.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks so much!
Edit: I tried to reassign the ext. HD a permanent letter, but my Control panel does not appear to offer the option of Administrative tools. Is there an easy way to get to this, as this seems to be the root of the problem?
    Thanks.
