BAcking up only Photos

I would like to backup just the photos on my macbook pro. I am using Appeture. I have used Time Machine to backup my whole computer, but I would like to have my photos backed up to a separate external hard drive.
When I click on preferences, I can click on what to exclude, (which is everything but my photos) but I can't quite figure out how to do that.
Is there a way to tell time machine to only backup what I want instead of exclude?
Thanks for a quick response. I am traveling and will be away from internet for a while. Thank you

Would it not be about just as easy to set up a Automator action that moved a specific folder to a specific location, and deleted the old folder?
The catch with that is that it won't work in increments. So, everytime you back up your photos they all get copied. With Chronosync or DejaVu or any of a plethora of utilities you can find on MacUpdate you can simply back up the changes.

If you tried to restore to your iCloud backup and your photos didn't fully restore, first go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and make sure it isn't still in the process of restoring.
If the restore is complete and all your photos weren't restored, all you can do is try restoring the backup again.  You might try the solution posted by ezjules in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19518589#19518589.  This involves opening the photos app after the phone restarts and you provide the passwords for your Apple IDs, then leaving it open for the remainder of the restore process.

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

    Exactly what did you do?
    The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

  • I backed up my iPad to the cloud and then had to wipe and restore it. Most of the tings are there but can't find all my photos that I had put into albums. Can anyone help. Only a few of my pics came back on my photo stream.

Can any one help me find my photos and albums???

Photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days, even though your last 1000 photos will remain on your device until you delete them.  When you reconnect to photo stream you only get back photos from the last 30 days.  Only camera roll photos are included in the backup.  To save your photo stream photos be sure to save them to your camera roll so they are backed up.
Photo albums will only be restored if they contain photos from the camera roll.  If they were folders synced to your device from your computer that will not be restored, but will be recreated when you sync with iTunes.  If they were albums that only contained photo stream photos they would also not be restored.

What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
    iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

    Hi Noob Søren
There are a few things that are confusing in your question.
As far as I know, you dont have to install Time Machine on this OS as it is already installed for you. You only need to connect a hard drive to your computer via firewire or usb, click on the Time Machine icon, Open Time Machine Preference in the drop down menu and select a disk: your connected hard drive.
You can of course reformat this connected device, partition it into a few volumes to organise data if you so wish.
I find it strange that your mac's hard drive is divided into two volumes... perhaps this was created through bootcamp?
You can access the configuration of your hd through Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities.
Clicking on one of the icons on the right hand panel will bring the details of the contents of your hardDrive and volumes. From there you can decide to erase a partition, reformat etc....
If your hd contains more than one volume, and one of them is empty, you could decide to remove it. Back up all your important data before doing so.
    Hope this helps

    Hi
Just to clarify a couple of points in your post.
RAM (memory) is different from hard drive space. You have 4GB of RAM, but that has no bearing on the amount of drive space you have, of which we know that 79GB are photos.
If those photos are in iPhoto, you should be able to move the entire iPhoto Library, from the Pictures folder, to your external hard drive. You can just drag and drop. Do not have iPhoto open while you're doing this. Once it's done, you can double-click on the moved iPhoto Library file to associate it with iPhoto, so that the app remembers where the library is for next time.
One more thing. When you move a file to a different location, and then delete the original, you don't have a backup. You still only have one copy. So if that external drive dies, you will lose all your photos. Time Machine is a very good way to prevent this from happening. You should dedicate a different drive for Time Machine backups.

I backed up 6000+ photos from Snow Leopard iMac v.10.6.7 to new Western Digital "My book" successfully, I think! But when I attempted to COPY my photos to it in order to free up space on my HD, I made a mistake. When I dragged the iPhoto (11) Library to My Book and re-named it to "iPhoto Library.old" nothing happened. So I dragged it again, re-named it again (same name--that was the mistake, I guess!) and then it took about an hour+ to do its thing. When finished and I launched iPhoto by holding down the Option key, the dialog window listed two libraries: "iPhoto Library.old" and iPhoto Library.old (default)". So now what? It seems that I still have the originals when I open iPhoto, and do I have two copies, also? Should I delete one of them and if so, which one and how? Or should I eliminate both of them and start over again? And if so, how do I do that? Right now, neither my HD nor the My Book have changed the number of GB available or free since before I began this process. Will the numbers only change after I actually delete my original Library AND empty the Trash? I appreciate any light you can throw on this subject for me. I could lug it all to the local Genius Bar, but now I'm afraid to unplug anything for fear I'll lose everything! Thank you, you wonderful, bright people. (An 83-year-old Grandma, trying to keep up a little, at least)

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

  • Is there a way where I can back up only certain stuff to iCloud

I have a lot of photos on my iPhone and I want to be able to back up my photos to my computer instead but still be able to back up contacts, calenders, ect to iCloud. Is there a way to assign certain stuff to backup to iCloud and still have my photos be backed up to my computer?

on your iphone go to icloud and untick photostream.
now you can choose between back up automatically to the cloud or to itunes. if you still choose tou back up to the cloud (which has nothign to do with sync on the cloud), you can still back up via itunes, just secondary click on your iphone>backup.
notice: you can always back up BOTH ways, but only one of them will be automatic.

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

ive got a new pc with windows 7 and my ipod touch 4th gen is synced with my old pc ,how can i back up the photos and music on the ipod to my new pc ?

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
    iOS: How to back up
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content such as music, videos, and photos synced to the device, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering different software available to assist you with this task.

If you do happen to lose any purchased content, you can always redownload it from the iTunes Store again at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for information.

  • Backing up i photos

I was trying to back up my iphotos
I was clicking on the iphotos folders and dragging over to the burn folder i had set up All my iphoto folders where there i moved about 4 copies over to burn folder and then next thing i knew all of my iphoto library was gone?! I didn't delete anything and have no idea how to get it back because i was trying to back up i have no previously backed up files Is there any way to get my photos back or are they gone forever?

Basically backup doesn't actually include apps anyway as these are on iTunes already?
Correct and the same for all other iTunes content - music, movies, TV Shows, etc. A record of the iTunes content that is available on the iPhone is included with the iPhone's backup.
Are these updated/backed up only if I backup my phone?
Yes. Contacts, messages, and 3rd party app settings and data stored locally on the iPhone is included with the iPhone's backup, but not a good idea to depend on the iPhone and the iPhone's backup alone for contacts. You can sync contacts over the air with a free Apple iCloud account along with backing up your iPhone wirelessly with the iCloud account - the backup is done automatically wirelessly when the iPhone is connected to a power source while connected to an available wi-fi network and you can manually update the iPhone's iCloud backup.
Also if I have apps that track things for me will I lose the information if I don't back up or do they automatically sync?
3rd party app settings and data stored locally on the iPhone with ha 3rd party app is not synced. It is included with the iPhone's backup.
Stupid question I guess but if my photos are backed up is it really necessary to back up my iPhone 4 before I swap to my 5s?
Whatever is included with the backup for the iPhone 4 with the most recent backup is what will be transferred to the 5S. If you have exchanged any text messages since the last backup for the 4S, those text messages will not be transferred to the 5S since they won't be included with the 4S backup.
