Backing up Personal Preferences

Recently bought the Curve (Verizon) and after reading these threads, decided to use Missing Sync to backup my information.  It's been working great
Then...I had an IM icon that I could not remove from my handset.  So...I did what was recommended and "wiped" the Curve
After that...I plugged it back in and used Missing Sync
Two things happened, which I'm hoping someone could address:
1. I noticed that my "personal preferences" (for lack of a better term) were not backed up.  In other words, the way I had my icons organized, my ringer profiles, my Blackberry Messenger contcts, etc.  Being a former Palm user...I am used to deleting all my info (the Treo crashed bi-monthly) and simply plugging it into the Palm Desktop and EVERYTHING was restored to MY settings. Can this be accomplished using Missing Sync....or any program for the Curve?
2. My "all day" appointments went from ONE day...to TWO days.  Not sure how the iCal-to-Curve transfer got confused.  Has that ever happened to anyone?
Thanks in advance for your help and recommedations

  • Move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder?

How do I move System Preferences Help file back into System Preferences folder.  I unintentionally moved it.  My Mac blocks putting it back.  Suggestions?  Thanks!

Somehow I managed to delete my System Preferences shortly after upgrading, and was able to use the 10.4 one for a while until I applied the patch. Luckily, I already had Pacifist, and with your directions I was able to get close enough so that I could find the Applications folder within the ContentsofEssentialsSystemSoftwareGroup > ContentsofEssentials.pkg > Applications > SystemPreferences.app.
For that, I owe you the deepest gratitude and a gigantic THANK YOU. My System Preferences is now fully reinstalled and working wonderfully.
Pacifist might actually be worth purchasing.

why is it that every time i start up my macbook air and when i restart it, that the new office with word and those three other apps constantly pop up? even though i went to personal preferences/users/login items, and selected the box that clearly says "items to NOT be brought up when logging in" ?

  • TS4036 I have a Macbook pro and I'm trying to set up my ICloud on it, and when I go to Preferences, there is NO ICloud there.  How can I get ICloud back into  "my preferences" to set it up?

I have a MacBook Pro, its 1 year old.  I'm trying to set up my ICloud on it, and when I go to "preferences", (it says to go to "Preferences" in the instructions,) and then "click" on "ICloud", but my ICloud is not there.  How can I get "ICloud back into "my preferences".

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
This suggests you don't have the right operating system. OS X 10.7.2 or better is required for iCloud, which operating system do you have.

problem, how do i get back my system preference? i think i delete it my mistake.

did you delete it from your dock or did you delete it completely from the computer
if it has just been removed from your dock all you have to do is go into your application folder and drag the system prefrences icon back to your dock .. if you are running an older version of osx go into finder click applications and find the icon for system prefrences there .. if you have snow lepord you can get the icon in the application folder on the right side of your dock
if it has been deleted completely from the computer use the disks that came with your computer to reinstall it
if your too nervous to do it yourself you can always make an appt with an apple store in your area at the genius bar and they can probably get it back for you

  • How do I get iPhone USB back to network preferences?

I (like many others) couldn't get the USB tethering to work after (probably) installing new iTunes 10.7.
I managed to delete iPhone USB from network preferences before reading all about this kext stuff etc that are being posted here.
    I have now tried:
    - uninstalling iTunes 10.7
    - installing iTunes 10.6.3
    - installing AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext v2.2.0
    - installing AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext v2.3.0
    - installing AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext v2.3.6
    - re-installing iTunes 10.7
+ rebooting / connecting iPhone via USB
None of these has made iPhone USB come back to network list.
Any ideas how to get it back?
    I'm running OS X 10.6.8.

Has everyone else managed to fix this or am I the only one who deleted iPhone USB from network preferences?

  • How to get back utilities, system preferences and safari

The utilities was lost in my iMac, and so did safari. Maybe my boy deleted them in mistake, he is interested in finding the secret of iMac since I bought it three months ago. I can't launch system preferences to change the setting of iMac, and thanks God, I can connect to internet by firefox. How can I get back utilities and safari? Do I need to reload the OS X 10.4.4 then update to 10.4.9 again?

Your entire Utilities folder and/or its contents was deleted?
If so, I suggest performing an Archive & Install selecting preserve user and network settings. If not and you don't know exactly what your boy deleted (have you checked the Trash?), performing an A&I will take care of everything known or unknown at once.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/archiveinstall.html
Now is also a good time to create a backup - preferably a bootable clone backup of your entire hard drive saved to an external firewire drive used for backup purposes only.
And I also suggest creating a computer login account for your boy WITHOUT admin privileges and disable automatic login for your admin account which will require manually entering your log in password for your admin account during a computer startup, restart and with Fast User Switching.
Before stepping away from your Mac or whenever it will be used by anyone that is unattended by you, log out from your account.
Keep the install package for your Mac in a safe place but in a location that is not known by your boy.

  • IMac Trackpad quits working; comes back with bluetooth preferences in focus

    OS X 10.9.2, 2010 iMac 27", 2.93 GHz, 16 GB Ram.
I've used a wireless trackpad for a couple of years.  Recently, it randomly quits working, even with fresh batteries.  It ALWAYS comes back immediately when I bring up Bluetooth preferences to focus.  (no changes, just bring it to surface)  It then works for a while or days randomly, quits again and comes back when I bring back preferences.

Does anyone have any comment or ideas as to why this is happening?  I should have written this as a question I guess.

  • Backing up personal files to Time capsule and then upgrading to Leopard

    Hi.
I recently bought the upgrade disks to Leopard from 10.4.11.
    i also bought Time capsule.
I was advised in the store to save all my personal files (photos, I tunes library, work) to time capsule, then perform a clean upgrade to Leopard, the replace all my personal files to my iMac, then doing the complete system back up to the time capsule.
I have managed to get the iMac talking to Timecapsule, I can print so this is all cool, but how do I save all my personal data to the timecapsule? I'm sorry if this is too daft a question, but I have tried seeing if there was an intuitive way of learning this on the Mac but as these files are so important, I really don't want to make a mistake that would lead to me losing everything.
    Many thanks in advance.
    M.

in the Finder use the Go command (top file menu) and in the window type afp://10.0.1.1 or whatever your TC ip address is, then you should be able to access that hard drive. you should use Airport Utility to assign a password to your TC hard drive.

  • Tool re-arranging order for personal preference

I am a #1 PSCS5 user and there is no prog. to compare--- one major request for the next build---please make the tools arrangeable per user preference. As an artist, most of the tools I use are either at the top or 3/4 down- eating my time up on tasks. I understand the sequence of layout that you have presented. If I could place the tools I use most in a 1,2,3 order my timing would be cut in half...and I do work fast! Know that there are certain shortcuts to this request but none that would compare if I could place in the sequence I that I use. I am sure that I am not the only person who would appreciate this! Thank you for considering this request!

have downloaded but now need to get this to work... created new tool order but have yet to get this to be recogonized by PS but see there are responses that address this... will try... so will let you know later if this works for me! A... says this is a 30 day trial... is everything a trail and error?

  • Disabling backing store on Preferences API

I'm working with a third-party API that makes heavy use of the Java Preferences API.
However for the application I'm building persistent storage of preferences makes no sense. Therefore I want to disable the backing store so that my "preferences" becomes something that lives in memory only. I also want to avoid the hassle that might come from not having write permission to the backing store.
I can find lots of examples on the Internet for disabling the Preferences API all-together. This is done by creating a new PrefencesFactory that does absolutely nothing and using this factory instead of the default.
(all references on the Internet seem to ultimately come from this article: http://www.allaboutbalance.com/disableprefs/)
I'm not sure what is in that article is what I want. I do not want to disable the Preferences API all-together, I only want to disable the backing store. I'm uncertain if that is what I get from the above mentioned DisabledPreferences implementation.
Any ideas of how I can disable the backing store ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, Kaj.
My question was not entirely clear. As I understand Sun's Preferences API in its standard form it holds the data both in memory (cache) and in the persistent backing store. Therefore I'm not sure it is even required to build a backing store that holds data in memory, i.e. I can use DisabledPreferences in its unmodified form.
If I'm lucky then all the "get" methods do not in fact go to the backing store to get the value but instead answer with a value from cache. I would expect the backing store to be asked only if the question cannot be answered from cache. If true I will not have to implement my own memory-based backing store.
But why do I waste your time with this when a simple test will quickly reveal what is going on. :-)
    Stay tuned.
    Thanks.

  • JDBC backing store for Preferences?

I've searched here and on Google and can't find anything about a JDBC backing store for the Preferences API. Does one exist? I looked in rt.jar on both Linux and Windows, and I find only FileSystemPreferences and WindowsPreferences. Google results showed discussion of a JDBC implementation for the Apache Jetspeed project. I haven't dug through there yet to see if they have something reusable. Strange, I would think a database would be a common storage medium for preferences. Thanks.

You'll have to write your own implementation of the API or wait until someone else writes one. You can find the API in the 1.4 javadocs.
    good luck.
