Backing up pictures on my iPhotos

Hi! I have a question two questions that I'm hoping you'll be able to help me with.
*My problem:* I have over 7,000 photos on my iPhotos and it's making my computer move very slow, so I need to take the majority off and just put it on my external harddrive. I have a SmartDisk FireLite External Harddrive (bought at a mac store). The program that I have been using with the exernal harddrive to back up the photos is BB Reminder Express.
*My first question:* How do I back up my pictures onto my harddrive BUT ensure that they are all still in the same order as displayed on iPhotos? I'll explain...fairly occasionally when I import photos, they aren't all in the correct order so I manually drag them to the correct place (a few photos ahead or behind). I have taken a lot of time to do this to my entire library, and would hate to lose the changes I made.
My second question: The way I have been backing up my documents etc so far is just to copy the iPhotos pictures folder. When you go to Macintosh HD- Pictures-iPhoto Library there is both a modified and an originals folder. I don't want to keep the original..I just want the modified picture I created, but I don't want to go on a deleting spree and delete things before I know what I'm doing!
When I get my new computer with more memory space I want to reload all the pictures that I'm temporarily keeping on the external harddrive. How will I ensure that it doesn't put load both the original and the modified photo?
So maybe the best question to ask is how do I back up my iPhoto library just as it is, so when I reload it later, it's exactly the same...same order, same photos cropped, no duplicate of the original photo AND the modified?
Can you help? Thank you SO much in advance!

By doing what you have been doing. That is, simply backing up the iPhoto Library Folder to the external disk.
To restore the Library when you upgrade: simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder back to the Pictures Folder on the new machine and the launch iPhoto. That's it.
If you want to move a Library:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Of course, if you move the Library to the external you'll need to back it up from there too.

This is very wise.
You cannot delete the Original if you are using iPhoto.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
iPhoto is a Digital Asset Manager. It always works to preserve your Original photo, treating it like a film photographer might protect his negative. This feature is hardwired into iPhoto. You cannot turn it off and frankly, if you don't want to preserve the Original then the best solution is to simply use some other app to manage your photos.

If you are running Lion then all drivers are distributed through Software Update. You do not need to install anything, other than to install the printer in System Preferences > Print & Scan. If you already added the printer while it was connected using USB, you might want to delete it and set it up again wirelessly to avoid confusion. Or, give them two distinct names e.g. "Photosmart D110 (USB)" and "Photosmart D110 (wireless)".
All scanning functions are now performed using Preview, but you can also access the scanner through the same Print & Scan preference pane, or with Image Capture.
This HP document may help explain how driver software is distributed now:

  • I can't access my pictures anymore through iPhoto because I simply don't know where they are stored when imported into iPhoto. The library used automatically before is not shown anymore. Can anyone help me to recover all my pictures?

I had some problems with my MacbookPro and did some clean up and further back-up (time machine already in place for a long time). Now, suddenly I can't access my pictures anymore through iphoto asking me for a library (never asked for before) and I have no clue where the pictures are actually saved when imported in iphoto. Can anyone help me recover my pictures, such as telling me WHERE the pictures are actually stored? Thank you so much!

A critical question - exactly what "clean up" did you do and how?
Do you have an iPhoto library in yoru pictures folder? If you depress and hold the option key and launch iPhoto - what do you see in the select library window? Select each library there and see what you have

  • Can  I write titles of comments on the picture image using iPhoto?

I will like to be able to write titles or labels in the pictures stored on iPhoto files without the need to go to another photo software.
Is it a way to write descriptive titles on the image using iPhoto?
    Thank you

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You will need a 3rd party editor like GraphicConverter or Photoshop Elements 3. Also Gimp is an open source version of Photoshop that would do it. You can find the first two at VersionTracker.com and the other thru a Google search. No matter what editor you use you set up iPhoto (in its preferences) to use that application as the editor of choice when you double click on a thumbnail. You never want to open a file directly thru the editor.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Somehow my pictures in the iPhoto library are blanked out

I have just been updated my Mac and the iphoto to 11 v. 9.2. I have switched to iCloud and is now using photostream. I had a lot of pics I started streaming and during I was editing the pics. from our vaction. Suddenly I'm told that the iPhoto library has an error and needs to be updated. I let the MAC do so, and then suddenly all my pictures in my iPhoto are blanked out. At this time all my 1000 pics are still not all streamed, but iPhoto it is still streaming though I can't see any pictures in the photolibrary??? I can only see empty squares where the pics were supposed to be. I then check my iPhone and I see that pictures at still streamed from iPhoto. Then I search for my pics in "Finder" and it seems they are still there however I would like to get them back in the same order as before?? Also I made a half made photobook, but the pictures in the book are also blanked out? Can anyone help?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Screensaver won't automatically bring up picture from my iphoto since I switched to Mountain Lion.  Any suggestions on how to get it to work.  My photos are located on an external hard drive that I keep connected to my laptop.

My screensaver won't automatically bring up pictures from my iphoto albums as it always did in the past since I installed Mountain Lion.  I do use an external hard drive to save all my pictures and music on that is always connected to my MacBookPro.  Any suggestions what I may be doing wrong.  I find it frustrating to have to set it daily as I close my computer down every night.

    Back up all data.
Quit System Preferences if it's open.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder should open. Inside it there should be one or more files with a long name beginning with "com.apple.screensaver." Move those files to the Trash. Set your screensaver preferences and see whether they stick.

  • Backing up pictures onto external drive

I need to restore my Mac and want to ensure I've backed up pictures correctly before doing so. Would simply dragging iPhoto pictures folder onto external drive safely back them up?

    Yes it would.

  • I am using using IDVD to create slide shows.  When viewed on my computer the pictures are clear and of high quality.  When I burn the slide show to a disk and play it back, the pictures are blurry and of poor quality.

I am using IDVD to create slide shows.  When viewed on my computer, the pictures are clear and of high quality.  When I burn the slide show to a disk and play it back, the pictures are blury and of poor quality.  Is there a setting that controls the quality of the burn and if there is, where do I find it?  Thank you.

The Mac software - iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD are not the best with the Ken Burns effect (zoom in/out effect), so you might want to minimize that effect; also, if your subjects are wearing stripes for instance, that will have an effect if you zoom. There is better software available for slideshows; however, I do not know of any that is free (and does a good job). I've used Photo to Movie for some time; it does a fine job even in HD, but you have to pay for it. I use iDVD extensively, but only to add a menu, theme, special effects, etc. and then to burn it.

I have an iMac ...I would like to delete 70,000 pictures from my iphoto 11 trash but it kept crashing ...what to do?
    Thank you & ShineOn!

Best guess on this point, though my suggestions may be shot down to the very last ...
If Terence Devlin says I am an idiot, then I will have learned somwthing from his counter-points.
Your HDD may be running low on free space, at least enough free space to process 70K photos in a single shot (an entire library, all associated as one).
You need to see how much free space vs total disk capacity is left.
Then check the size of the files you are trying to "empty trach".  If those two numbers are too close, you may need to try some gymnastics.
If you have not used CarbonCopyClone, you may want to get an external drive that is 2x your internal drive.  If you have room enough, download (for free) CarbonCopyClone or SuperDuper (your call, both equally good).  Make a clone of yuor drive onto this external single-partition drive, which should have more than enough free space without shutting down.  You do this by booting holding the "option key" so that all operations are now on the external disk.
Then you can clone this external clone back with an empty trash.  Then be more careful about how large the "trash gets", by disassociating bulks such as iPhoto.
This may be an overly dramatic approach and there may be ther ways to bypass "empty trash" usage of system resources.   But nothing is destructive on your original disk until the last step of cloning back, and you have a new way of making an "emergency crash" bootable disk if even that does not work.  I DO run with a CCC external bootable, by the way, so the "if nothing else" effect has value.

  • Any trick to go back a picture on screen saver?

Is there any trick etc to go BACK a picture when displaying an iPhoto or mobile me pictures screen saver?
Our home computers display photo's from our lives and often one comes up that we want to go back to. Years ago on Windows this was easy and I am hoping there's a way to do it now with Snow Leopard.
    TIA

  • How do I transfer pictures from my iphoto to an external harddrive to free up space?

How do I transfer pictures from my iphoto to an external harddrive to free up space?

To get photos off of your Mac the solution is to run your iPhoto library (and probably iTunes library) on an external drive. The drive must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled). Quit iPhoto and drag your iPhoto libeprary to a properly formatted external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library window to select the new location. Fully test it and then delete the one on the internal drive. Test one more time before emptying the trash. Verify that your back up software is backing up the external drive.

  • My Iphone 4 just updated to the iOS6.  I've connected it to my computer for the first time since then, and wanted to back up my photos in iPhoto.  However, although Iphoto recognized my phone, it shows no photos to upload or backup. ??

My Iphone 4 just updated to the iOS6.  I've connected it to my computer for the first time since then, and wanted to back up my photos in iPhoto.  However, although Iphoto recognized my phone, it shows no photos to upload or backup.  It lists my phone in the "devices" category on the left bar, but no longer shows any of my photos.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've reread your question several times and am not sure I understand it.
Are you trying to basically start over, as if you just took your iPhone out of the box?  If so, do:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings

  • How do i set up a slideshow with pictures from multiple iphoto libraries?

How do i set up a slideshow with pictures from multiple iphoto libraries? One library is in my Macbook Harddrive, the other 2 libraries are in an external harddrive. Thank you!!

You can't, simply. An iPhoto Slideshow can only draw from a single library, so you'll need to get all the images into one.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
    FotoMagico $99
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. Describe the problem as fully as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
