Backing up pictures onto external drive

I need to restore my Mac and want to ensure I've backed up pictures correctly before doing so. Would simply dragging iPhoto pictures folder onto external drive safely back them up?

Yes it would.

  • Backed up library onto external hd - want to get music bk into itunes lib - moved 2 files library.itl and library.xml but reverts bk to 5kb and 11kb (ie. no music)

I backed up library onto external drive. (itunes directory - with Album artwork, itunes music directory, and xml/itl files)
Now I am trying to upload music back to a new Windows XP computer - I have new itunes version.
First I moved/copied the itunes directory whole to the new computer - then opened itunes and the library.itl and library.xml reverted to 5 and 11kb
Then tried just moving those two files - still nothing
Help - as I have over 28MB of music I am trying to recover.
    Thanks,

The "missing file" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?
I have one 1T Western Digital backup drive that works well with Time Machine and my MacBook Pro.  I now want to back up my wife's MacBook Air using Time Machine on her Mac and want to know if I can use the same WD external drive or if I need to get a 2nd back up drive?  If I can use one external drive for the two Macs do I need to do something special on the drive or will Time Machine do it automatically?

Yes. You will need to configure Time Machine preferences on each computer to backup to the same drive. Note that you cannot connect the backup drive to both machines at the same time.

I currently have the back up on a Time Capsule, I want to move it from the Time Capsule to another external hard drive.

Did you read the link to the Pondidni website?  You will have to select the Time Machine HDD for the new MBP and the old one in System Preferences>Time Machine:
    Ciao.

  • I am trying to move previous Time Machine back ups off an external drive to my new Time Capsule. How do I do that?

I have my previous time machine back ups on an external drive and I want to move those to my new 2tb Time Capsule. How can I make this happen?

    You probably cannot do it..
The backup is very different from a local drive to a network drive.
    Look through the Pondini KB.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You can move the backup from a local to another local disk or network to another network.. but there are issues even doing that.
IMHO.. don't... just start a new backup and keep what you already have saved up.. if you don't need it in 6months time.. or a year.. then you can wipe it.

Does the disk appear in Disk Utility?

  • Can i delete the backup on my internal drive as i have it backed up on a external drive...if so how??

can i delete the backup on my internal drive as i have it backed up on a external drive...if so how??

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

  • Back-up to Lacie external drive

I am monitoring a project using 2 cameras. Have been combining the rolls in iPhoto into 1 roll with dates. When I try to transfer the images to a folder created in the finder, repeatedly I'm told for example that jpg1 already exists and I cannot move another image also being a jpg1 into the folder.
Sure hope there is a solution to this for I must get these image backed up on an external drive.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Jack

    Jack:
The best way to fix your issue is to put the files into an album and name that album the way you would want the basic file name to be. Then export those photos from the album using the File->Export->File Export menu route and select the option to "Use album name". The exported files will be titled "album name-01.jpg", "album name-02.jpg", etc. This will maintain their order. if you export more than 99 at a time, the files will not be ordered properly in the list view as they don't have two zeros before numbers 1-9 and one zero before numbers 10-99.

  • Backing up pictures to external hard drive???

When I try to "drag" my pictures to my external hard drive it wont let me (circle with slash through it). I have tried do drag from iphoto and my pictures. I read to do it through time machine but when I go to time machine it says it is going to erase everything from my hard drive. HELP!!!! I just got my mac and I dont know much, I want all of my pictures backed up because I am a photographer and dont want to lose anything! Will I need a new hard drive? Thanks!I would like to just be able to drag my folders to my external hard drive, but I am feeling overwhelmed learning this computer and do not feel it will be that easy??

have you found an answer to your question?
does the hard drive you're using have anything on it?
if it does do you need what is on it? if so you'll need to back it up
it does need to be formatted for your mac which is quite easy
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3509
or Google "formatting external hard drive for mac"
the first thing on the list is a youtube video, check it out
after formatting you should be able to drag whatever you want to the external drive from the finder, i don't know if you can drag your open iphoto pictures directly into your external drive, you might have to open finder, find the location where you keep your pictures and either drag to external drive or copy and paste into a specific location on your external drive
    hope that helps,

  • Issue With Backing Up Video Onto External LaCie Drive

I captured some video onto my external LaCie Drive. I am now backing everything up onto a second LaCie drive, but some files will not copy over. I've tried copying to my desktop and then to that drive but that does not work either. I get a pop-up saying,
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (Error Code 0)"
    Any idea what's causing this?

Did you reformat both drives to MacOS Extended?
If not, that could be part of your problem. LaCie sells a lot of drives and some of them come as MS-DOS compatible (aka FAT-32 formatted) which causes all sorts of problems with Mac systems.

  • Getting old PC-produced videos onto external drive - a longshot

    Hi all,
I have a particular problem and can't get very far on my own.
I have 11-12 years of "home movies" stored on DVDs.  I still have the original DV tapes of many of them, but many more of the original electrons are long gone.  That's OK.  I don't mind.
What I want to do is get the content of those DVDs onto an external drive (probably as mp4's) so that I can convert them into the next-generation technology when there is a next-generation technology.
The problem is that the earliest of these 50 DVD were made on a Sony VAIO laptop with Sony software called Click-to-DVD.  I don't really know how to use handbrake, and I don't really know what to do.  And it looks like all my Macs don't want to read the files created by the Sony laptop and software (which are now long gone).
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Should I just pay some 14-year-old to figure this out??
Thank you for any and all suggestions that an only moderately-computer-literate person can understand.  Thanks!

    Good!
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Import Directly onto External Drive?

Up 'til now, I've mostly used iMovie for making really fancy slideshows.
I recently got a new 250GB LaCie drive to go with my first miniDV camcorder.
I got the drive installed and formatted correctly. I also know how to tell iMovie where to save my project (obviously, my new drive).
What I'm not sure about is whether I can connect my camcorder directly to my external harddrive's extra Firewire port or if it's better to just connect it to the port on my eMac. I'd like to connect it to the HD since it's out of the way and I could leave the cord connected...and I would assume that doing so would make the most sense since the clips are ultimately going to reside on the HD.
But I'm not sure if iMovie application (which still resides on my Mac) will see the camcorder if it's not connected directly to my Mac.
I guess I could just plug it in and see...but on the off chance the iMovie only like camcorders connected directly to the Mac, I don't want to risk bogging down my computer and/or making it crash as it wonders what I did.

    Alypius,
"What I'm not sure about is whether I can connect my camcorder directly to my external harddrive's extra Firewire port or if it's better to just connect it to the port on my eMac."
I suggest using a separate FireWire port for the camera.
I've had problems in the past when daisy chaining my camera onto an external drive. Pulling the data in from the camera while simultaneously pushing it back to the drive is a lot for one FireWire port to handle.
I also don't like the idea of plugging and unplugging devices into the hardrive's port while the drive is mounted. In theory it should work, it just makes me nervous about corrupting the drive.
"and I would assume that doing so would make the most sense since the clips are ultimately going to reside on the HD"
The data is still being processed by the computer before it is written to the drive. So there's really no inherent advantage.

  • Backed up music on external drive doesnt show on new computer

k, I backed up my music onto an external drive. I go into another computer of mine and tell it that the library is on this external drive. It knows this and for what i'm concerned it puts music to it. But it doesnt show my existing music that i downloaded on the first computer or the purchases that i have made on on the other computer? Should it show these? do i just start over [which is not what i want to do]? Do I update?

decided to backup my iTunes library to an external hard drive incase of a crash so I dont loose my precious music. So I went into my preferences, Advanced, and changed the iTunes folder location to my external, and consolidated the library which backed up my files to the drive
This is not a backup. This copies everything in iTunes to the new location and iTunes will use that location from now on.
The music located in /Music/iTunesiTunes music/ folder is no longer needed or used by iTunes.
However whenever I would click a song to play it said it could not find the file
iTunes was looking for it on the external (which you probably unplugged/umnounted).
I am wondering since I backed up the library to the external drive
You did not back up the library to the external.
You consolidated everything in iTunes to the external and iTunes will use that.
As Jim noted, if you want to to backup, copy the entire iTunes folder.
    Jim'
If you somehow lost it, look for it in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder in your music folder.
The itl file gets copied into the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder only when you update iTunes.
