Backing up selected folders.
hi,
i'm sure this should be fairly straight forward - how do i go about backing up only my iphoto library, itunes library and my movies as opposed to my whole hard drive?

Assuming you don't have other backups, why don't you want to back up your entire system? Once the initial full backup is done, Time Machine only does "incremental" backups -- the items that are new or changed. Recovering from a hard drive failure without full backups will be difficult, lengthy, possibly expensive, and "iffy."
But if that's really what you want to do, Time Machine isn't what you want. Since it's designed to back-up your entire system; you'd have to exclude everything else.

Backing up selected folders along with their metadata
My Podcast folder in the itunes Music folder has grown up to 15 GB and I need to free up some space.
Is there a way I can just move out a portion of this folder (or any folder for that matter) along with its metadata. and then easily have it back in my library at a later stage.
And if I move out some podcast series all together, will the subscription remain intact?The easiest solution is to move your entire library to a new location, but if you want to do a partial move use either the XML editing or Symbolic linking methods. I've copied below from an earlier (slighty Windows-centric I'm afraid) posting on this topic.
*Moving your iTunes Music folder*
OK, so you’re running out of room on your main hard drive for all that music you’ve ripped from your CD’s – it’s time to relocate some or all of the library to another drive, e.g. a nice chunky USB external drive. You could give iTunes total control – see Moving your iTunes Music folder (Mac) - and ask it to "consolidate" your library onto your new drive, letting it rename your files in the process. However I like to be in control, for example I want to keep all my classical & comedy tracks in separate folders and I don’t want my track names truncated. I also don't necessarily want to move all my library to the external drive – just the stuff I play less often so that it's not the end of the world if I've taken the drive into work. You could try and manually delete, move & re-import sections of your library. The downside is that it takes ages and you will lose any related metadata such as play counts, last played, date added, playlist membership etc. Another approach is given here: HOWTO: Move your iTunes music while preserving library data (when you don’t let iTunes manage your music library) but that involves a lot of messing about with XML and when iTunes gets around to rebuilding your library it will probably want to reprocess all the artwork & gapless playback information. Also each of the above methods will probably result in iTunes deciding that your files have "changed" in some way and so need to be resynced to the iPod, wasting yet more time.
There is an easier way... use symbolic links or junction points. These are little known features of the NTFS & HPFS filing systems that let you take an empty folder and instead of filling it with content you make it point to existing content in another location such as an external drive. Although Mac OS X, Windows XP & Vista all support symbolic links none appear to come with any tools to help you create them so you'll have to grab something from the net. For Windows XP I've plumped for Junction Link Magic but you should explore the concept a little before diving in so you might find another tool that suits you better. Once you've got and tested a linking tool just move a section of your library (or all of it if so inclined) to a new location with enough room for it, create a blank folder to replace the folder you've just moved, then fire up your linking tool to connect the empty folder to the new destination. Once done, as far as iTunes or any other applications are concerned your music is where it always was... however your main data drive should now have loads of extra space. Job done!
A final word of caution. Don't forget what you've done and start deleting what might appear to be duplicate files. In my case my Comedy folder is now at both D:\My Documents\My Music\Comedy (where iTunes expects to find it) & H:\Music\Comedy (the true physical location) however there is only one set of files and deleting from either apparent location will delete from both. Deleted files from such locations may also be immediately deleted rather than going to the recycle bin from where they could be recovered so a little more thought should be given to deleting files.

In LR2 it was possible to put a checkmark beside selected folders to import in the LR catalog. The 'include subfolders' checkbox in LR3 only partially accomplishes the same thing, but with much less flexibility.
I create my folder structure and copy images from CF cards through the operating system and do my initial edit and captioning in another program. Only then do I want to add them (without moving) to my LR3 catalog to take advantage of the Develop module.
When I started using LR2 I just imported folders as I needed to work on the images, but didn't import the root folders the 'shoot' folders are in. That means I have a whole lot of rather unorganized folders in a long list in my catalog. I'd like to go back and rationalize the catalog, adding the root and higher level folders. However, if I select 'Camera2010' to import with 'include subfolders' checked then LR3 wants to import everything, including small web versions and optimized TIFFs that are in folders a level below where all my raw files live. Yes, I could uncheck those files, but it would be a huge amount of tedium.
Is there any clean way to get my folder structure rationalized within LR3 without importing all the unwanted low-level processed images? My current catalog is about 50K images and I have many more to add.GatorJim2000, very helpful answer.
I was able to turn off 'include subfolders' and select a high-level folder. Then I could Ctrl-click the individual folders below that I wanted to import, making sure not to highlight (select) the lowest level folders I did not want. Thank you. -
Unable to choose 'selected folders' in iTunes
help guys! im using Windows XP and my problem is can't choose 'selected folders' in Photos section of my iTunes. what should i do?
I'm running itunes 9.2 with iOS4 on my 3Gs..
After I upgrade to 9.2, I found that under "info" tab, all my selected group disappear both on my contacts & calendars. then i tried several fix and now problem solved.. hope following tips can help.
1) make sure your outlook, tools/Trust Center/add-ins : both 1) itunes outlook addin and 2) Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service is *active & loaded*
2) On ur itunes/iphone section : hen u switch between tabs ( info/photos/music/app....) each time if u back to info section, an apple program call " mingler.exe " will be executed and check on the outlook contact & calendar section to refresh the groups, the reasons that groups doesn't show up mainly because this program didn't run. So what I did is uninstall itunes, then goto C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple and delete the whole Mobile Device Support folder, then restart ur PC. Now reinstall itunes, and the Mobile Device Support will be installed back, U may rename the old folder as backup as well. After itunes installed, plug in ur iphone, and switch to info tab, groups may not show ye, so u have to switch to other tab and back to info again, coz each switch will trigger itunes to run the Mingler.exe and to refresh the contact & calendar groups.
U can also open task manager to see whether mingler.exe is running, in my case, i need to wait few minutes until mingler.exe start to run, and it takes another few minutes to wait for the groups to show under itunes. Once the mingler.exe is running, u can be sure the groups will show up on ur itunes.

If i selected to "Create a new backup" and then canceled that option but want to go back and select "Inherit backup history"; how do I go back and do that since now when I plug in my external hard drive, that option doesn't appear anymore?? Any Help? I bought a MacBook Air, but decided to return it for the newest model, and I wanted to back it up so that I can then back it up on my new MacBook Air. I didn't understand the option to Inherit or start a new back up, and therefore selected the option to create a new backup. I believe I should have selected to Inherit backup history so that when i back it up on the new MackBook Air, it appears the same as the one I'm returning.... Is there anyway that i can re-select the option to Inherit backup history for time machine?

Command-Option-I opens the Inspector window. (Or open the File menu and hold the Option key. Get Info turns into Show Inspector.) The Inspector is similar to the Get Info window but it shows aggregate info for multiple selections. It is also dynamic — if you change the selection while the Inspector is open, the info changes to reflect the current selection. -
Back to selection screen after error
Hello ABAPers,
I have a executable program (REPORT) to do some processing (e.g. read a standard table with the parameters and select-options and save the data in a Z table).
When occurs an error (e.g. when sy-subrc <> 0 after select) and a message of type E is showed, the program show the message in a "clean" screen with title SAP. Then, after ENTER or ESC, it leaves to initial screen of SAP (SAP Easy Access).
The message of type E is triggered from a routine (FORM) called from START-OF-SELECTION event. And the program don´t write nothing in list (only return a status message if everithing is ok).
How can I force the program to back to selection screen after some error?

Photos: "Selected folders" grayed out.
I've been having issues syncing photos to my ipad mini. 1. the "Selected folders" option is grayed out so I can't choose that. 2. When I sync anything it replaces the album I syncing previously. Basically, I can't put any albums on by syncing in iTunes. Any ideas?

I have a program which contains 3 screens:
1st -- selection screen.
2nd -- my screen, I called it 1002, When I press F8 button on I get on it. I am using cl_gui_alv_grid there with my own buttons. So when I press MY OWN the save button I get the 3d screen
3d -- my own screen with some labels (screen name 1001).
So when i press BACK button on the third screen I want to back on selection screen and skip second screen, but I can't, I think the problem is in the cl_gui_alv_grid because I use custom grid handler:

Everything is working ok. But when I click on Back button,the screen goes first to the ALV display mode from edit mode, then user has to click one time more the back button to go to selection screen because the FM 'REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY' is called once again when user clicks
on change button because I am making the EDIT flag = 'X' and then calling FM again.
Is there a way that when user clicks on Back button, he will directly go to Change Screen -> Selection screen instead of going to Change screen -> Display screen -> Selection screen

Rajesh.You must not call the FM 'REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY' again to make it editable. Instead you can call the FM REUSE_ALV_GRID_LAYOUT_INFO_GET and REUSE_ALV_GRID_LAYOUT_INFO_SET to make your grid editable / non-editable.

In this example, when you SAVE, it will give you one Information message and than make the Layout to non-editable mode. When you press back button, it will get you back to selection screen.

Going back to selection screen from ALV
Hi there,
I have scenario: program -> selection screen -> ALV
In the 'BACK' button I have put: LEAVE TO SCREEN 0. It should go back to selection screen. But it does not and exits the program. I also tried to call the selection screen like CALL SELECTION-SCREEN 1000. But in this case if I hit BACK on selection screen, it goes back to previous screen, the ALV not the program. Can you please assist any other way to use the back button from
ALV -> Selection screen. Thanks.

Aperture 3 selected folders sync
Syncing my I phone with aperture 3 selected folders gives me an error -50 as the size of he library is too big and the option "selected folders' id greyed out...
Error -50 is being caused by the photo cache, which you say you've deleted, correct? If you can select the whole library, but selected albums are still greyed out, that usually means that aperture has not built all the previews for the photos in question. Perhaps someone from the aperture forum might be better able to direct you, as I have not used aperture 3.0, yet.

HT4236 Trouble syncing photos as "selected folders"
Can anyone please help? I'm having trouble uploading photos from my computer to my I-phone device.
The problem I'm having is I'm trying to sync photos to my i phone device and "select specific folders" and although this is never been a problem in the past prior to downloading I-tunes 11, it's not allowing me to sync selected photos (only allowing me to select all folders) as the appropraite selection to "sync selected folders" is blocked out and will not allow me to manually switch to it.
I've tried changing settings etc and seeing if there's anything that can allow me to do this, but have had no luck.

Put all the folders (or a shortcut to those folders) with photos into one folder and select that top level folder.
Then you can tick Selected folders and pick the subfolders.
The photos do not all need to be in one single folder.
Each folder will be a separate album in the Photos app.

Where are the folders on your computer that you are trying to sync ? If they are directly underneath the folder that you have selected at the top of the Photos tab then the 'selected folders' option should not be greyed out - is that where the photos that you are trying to sync located on your computer ?
