Backing up the Config Database
Can you safely backup the SharePoint Config Database during working hours?
dfrancis
Sure. You can do this for any database (using SQL Server Management Studio or T-SQL).

Archive command not backing up the config
I setup archive feature on our switch stack, thinking it will back up the full running config to an FTP server. The setup works fine when a write-memory is performed - the entire config gets sent to text file on FTP server. When it does a scheduled archive; however, the text file is virtually empty.
Here is the config:
Switch#sh run | beg archive
archive
path ftp://<server-ip>/A06_3750/$h-
write-memory
time-period 1440
Every 1440 minutes, my understanding is it would archive the config to the ftp server. Here is the text file it leaves instead:

! NVRAM config last updated at 06:52:01 PST Sat Jan 29 2011 by user

Can anyone recommend a backup procedure to automate the GSS backups?
I understand how to backup the GSS, I am looking for ideas on how to automate the process.
Backup commands:
copy startup-config disk <file name>
gssm backup full <file name>Hi David,
you can try the following:
enter the specific proximity database delete command followed by the proximity database periodic-backup now command to force an immediate backup of the empty proximity database residing in GSS memory.

Backing up the Oracle Database
I am new to WLS and would like to know if there is a correct/safe procedure for
backing up an Oracle database that is connected to WLS?
Should WLS be shutdown before the DB is shut down? Or can I safely backup Oracle
while WLS is running and let the connection pool refresh automatically or by invoking
RESET_POOL?
Are connections to Oracle handled by the Oracle shutdown? or are there implications
with WLS loosing a connection mid-transaction?If you need to keep WLS up and running during the backup, you can set the connection pool
to test the connection on reserve. This way the connection will only be given to the
client app code if it is good. I'm not sure if the connections to the DB actually get
corrupted. It depends on the Oracle backup process. Does the backup process kill all
connections? If so, the 'test conns on reserve' will cure it.

Hi,
Can we use Rman to backup the EBS 12i database. IS this recomended. Or is there any other methodHi,
"You can have a RMAN backups on E-business Suite Data base. Also people can do lot of things as backup strategy.
BUT Its not the Best practise or meaning full backup strategy on E-biz backup policy and Oracle is not recomending to rely on RMAN for E-business Suite System. "What is your reference?
Personally, I would rely on RMAN to backup the database (standalone database and E-Business Suite database). For the application tier node files, you cannot use RMAN and you will have to use any OS tool and/or a third party software.
When u design a backup policy for EBS there should be seperate backups for Middle tier and another for the Database . Can u please exaplain the Oracle Recomended methos for the above two .I would suggest you consider taking a backup of the database on daily basis. For the application, a weekly backup should be enough. The best backup policy would be taking an online backup of the database on daily basis (or incremental), and an offline backup (if possible) for the database and the application on weekly basis. If you have plans of applying application/database patches during the week, then you will need to consider taking a backup before applying any patch.
Thanks,

How to get the data from mysql database which is being accessed by a PHP application and process the data locally in adobe air application and finally commit the changes back in to mysql database through the PHP application.
If the data is on a remote server (for example, PHP running on a web server, talking to a MySQL server) then you do this in an AIR application the same way you would do it with any Flex application (or ajax application, if you're building your AIR app in HTML/JS).
That's a broad answer, but in fact there are lots of ways to communicate between Flex and PHP. The most common and best in most cases is to use AMFPHP (http://amfphp.org/) or the new ZEND AMF support in the Zend Framework.
This page is a good starting point for learning about Flex and PHP communication:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/flex_php.html
Also, in Flash Builder 4 they've added a lot of remote-data-connection functionality, including a lot that's designed for PHP. Take a look at the Flash Builder 4 public beta for more on that: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashbuilder4/ -

How to config the oracle database connection pool in IAS
Hi,
Does anyone who hows to config the oracle database connection pool in IAS?
Thanks so much!!!
[email protected]
JackyJacky,
You need do the following for oracle type4 driver:
1) register the driver:
$IAS_HOME/bin/jdbcsetup
Driver Identifier: Oracle_Type4_816 (whatever name you like)
Driver Classname: oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
Driver Classpath: .../classes12.zip (install this this zip file somewhere
and add this zip into the Classpath later).
2) DataSource Setup:
start iAS Administration Tool (iASAT)
Choose Database, unfold iAS1 (your app server instance),
choose External JDBC Datasource -> add: DataSource Registration
JNDI Name: yourPoolName
Driver Type: Oracle_Type4_816 (select what you just register)
DataSource Url: jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostName:portName:dbName
Username: your_user_name
Password: your_passwd
(Datasource Pool: using defaults for now): you can also customrize the
parameters for the pool.
3. Add classes12.zip into CLASSPATH.
In your application, you can use JNDI lookup to get the DataSource from
which you get the connection from the pool.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Manage "Do not permanently delete items until you back up the database" mailbox level
Hi,
I need the active directory attribute name for "Do not permanently delete items until you back up the database" at mailbox level and the EMS command for enabling/disabling
the above setting (the other settings in the following screenshot I found).
Thanks in advance!Well, there are only 3 possible values I believe... 1 = database default, 2 = retain for custom period and 3 = Retain Until Backup Or Custom Period... However I have seen 2 doesn't work for some reason and if you have database default is not selected
and keep deleted item for x days set to something else other than default and Do not permanently delete items until you back up the database is unselected then it set the value to 5 as well.... I guess other than these possible values if anything else is set
then it will give you warning that object is corrupted.
But yes value is other than 3 then checkbox is automatically deselected set based on what value it has... in short I would check what's the value for deletedItemFlags by setting all the possible options before coming to conclusion... ;) -
How can I revert back to the default config on Secure Access Server 5.3?
We recently purchased new Secure Access Control Servers version 5.1 and have upgraded to version 5.3 with current patches. Several people have configured one of the appliances and we would like to revert back to the original config with no NDGs or Devices or any other variables configured. Is this possible?
While looking up a command in the CLI reference, I also found the command to reset the acs to factory default. It is "acs reset-config". This resets the acs portion only, not the linux appliance, so your IP addresses, DNS, etc. are retained. It does clear out the license for the ACS, so if you use this make sure you have the license file. You will also have to go through the initial password setup again.

ADSI/LDAP :Map DB2 database sessions back to the Siebel session.
Hello All,
with ADSI/LDAP authentication we will have one and only one database account for all Siebel users and as a result all database connections are logged under the same database user ID. Therefore it is not possible to map database sessions back to the Siebel session. Is there a way to Achive this with DB2 9.1 Backend.
Thanks,

Backing up the database and the limitations
Hello all,
I tried to follow the steps in the documentation to back up the database;
On Windows: Click Start, point to Programs, point to Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, and then select Backup Database
but I dont see Backup Database under Oracle database 10g express, here is what I have there:
Get Help >
Get Started
Go To Database Home Page
Run SQL Command Line
Start Database
Stop Database
Thats all.
What I am trying to check is, if I can change the location for backups to avoid the 2 backup limitation. Is it possible to do that?Well - this is the area we are having a lot of internal discussions on - so this is not final yet, but feedback would be a good thing.
Lets say you shut the machine down mid transaction one night while there are still users connected. This would not cause disk corruption, but you had inflight transactions at the time. On restart, the database would automatically roll forward the committed transactions, and automatically rollback uncommited transactions. So your database would be consistent. You would of course lose the transactions that were uncommited. This is what we call instance recovery.
Lets say you take a backup on Monday, using the techniques we are proposing. On Tuesday the disk crashes and dies. You are not using Raid 5 etc, so you have no disk based mirror of your data. So you go and buy a new disk, add it to the machine, re-install the database software, and then restore from Monday nights backup. This is what we call media recovery.
Using the techniques we propose for Oracle Database XE, you will lose ALL transactions from the time of the backup (i.e Tuesday) - both committed and uncommited until you complete the restore.
If you did not want to run the risk of losing transactions in the event of a disk crash, then you should look at one of the licensable versions, which uses a technique called archive logging to allow you to roll forward all transactions since your last (or any given backup).
Note that for all versions however, backup is online.

Is using backup device better when backing up the database?
Hello Community
I used sp_addumpdevice to perform a backup and restore.
Is there an advantage to using sp_addumpdevice when doing
backups and restores or is it better to just issue the Backup Database
command and specify to disk?
Thank you
ShabeautHello,
There is no difference in terms of performance. The difference is the level of obfuscation, for example if you had a single database and wanted it to always go to the same place, etc, you could do what you've done and then the backup command is smaller.
It's the same either way.

Remove packages and all the config files associated with it
How can I remove a package and all the files folders hidden folders config files and examples which are installed with it.
In short how can I revert the system back to the state when the package was not even there.
When i remove a package i still see some folders which are associated with it in some weird directories.
Is there a way to get rid of those.
ThanksFrom the pacman man page:
Remove Options
-c, --cascade
Remove all target packages, as well as all packages that depend on one or more target packages. This operation is recursive, and must be used with care since it can remove many potentially needed packages.
-k, --keep
Removes the database entry only. Leaves all files in place.
-n, --nosave
Instructs pacman to ignore file backup designations. Normally, when a file is removed from the system the database is checked to see if the file should be renamed with a ".pacsave" extension.
-s, --recursive
Remove each target specified including all of their dependencies, provided that (A) they are not required by other packages; and (B) they were not explicitly installed by the user. This operation is recursive and analogous to a backwards --sync operation, and helps keep a clean system without orphans.
-n seems to be what you are looking for. -
How do web front ends find the configuration database (moving whole farm to new AD forest)
We are exploring, as a possible course of action, moving our SharePoint 2007 medium farm to a different Active Directory forest (2008). There is a two way transitive trust between the source and target domains.
I have established that with such a trust it's possible to add content databases on a SQL instance in another forest, so moving content is not a big issue; we'd stand up new instances and move them: the user accounts are almost all in the target domain anyway.
However, we have a good deal of customization, including a third-party application that no longer has any support and has historically been appallingly difficult to upgrade/install fresh.
How do web front end servers find the SQL instance containing the configuration database? If the farm credentials had been previously changed to an account in the target domain, all services stopped and the configuration database moved to a new instance
with a DNS alias, would the database appear to be in the same location when SQL and SharePoint services were started on (logically) moved web front ends? Here is more or less the high-level process for SharePoint 2007:
Mid- to high-level steps.
0. Full farm backup
1. Move users to new domain (in AD). Use stsadm -o migrateuser to migrate the old domain accounts to the new ones in SharePoint
2. Move service accounts to new domain, or create new service accounts
3. Update the farm to use the service accounts in the new domain
stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials (service accounts)
stsadm -o spsearch -farmserviceaccount
stsadm -o spsearch -farmcontentaccessaccount
stsadm -o editssp -ssplogin (for each ssp)
stsadm -o osearch -farmserviceaccount
SSO and any other remaining service accounts (CA -> Ops -> Service Accounts)
Default content access account (SSP -> Search Settings -> Default content access account)
Customizations (if there are service accounts associated with these)
3.5 Manual steps
Application pool accounts
Update permissions for SQL Logins to make sure the new accounts match the permissions for the old accounts
Add the appropriate new accounts to the DCOM IIS WAMREG Admin Service
4. Update the SQL Server service accounts. If SQL Server is shared with other applications you'll want to update the SQL Logins for these other applications as necessary and the SQL Server service accounts (DB Engine, DB Agent, Reporting Services, etc.). Might
not be necessary if this has already been done or if the SQL server is not changing domains.
5. Shut down all services on all servers in the farm (this includes SQL if you are moving to the new domain).
6. Change domain membership of all farm servers, reboot or perhaps shutdown and bring back up in the following order:
1. SQL. Verify SQL Server is running and accessible. Check event logs. Resolve any issues.
2. Central Admin server. Verify CA is accessible, check event logs. Web apps and some services may not be available if they are on servers that are currently turned off. Don't worry about these (yet).
3. Application servers, search servers, index, query, other. It's likely some or all of the WFEs will go on at this step. Verify services are accessible as expected. Check event logs. Resolve issues.
4. Any remaining WFEs. Wash, rinse, repeat.
7. Assuming everything is running as expected, users can access the sites, the sky did not fall, etc. take a full farm backup.
Hey look, here are some low-level steps too.
# updates the account used to run the CA app pool and the timer service
# must be run on the server that hosts CA
stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -identitytype configurableid -userlogin NEWDOMAIN\farm_service_account -password Password123
# spsearch
stsadm -o spsearch -farmserviceaccount NEWDOMAIN\search_service_account -farmservicepassword Password123 -farmcontentaccessaccount NEWDOMAIN\crawl_service_account -farmcontentaccesspassword Password123
# osearch
stsadm -o osearch -farmcontactemail [email protected] -farmserviceaccount NEWDOMAIN\search_service_account -farmservicepassword Password123
# ssp service accounts
stsadm -o editssp -title SSP -ssplogin NEWDOMAIN\ssp_service_account -ssppassword Password123
# Manual steps
SSP Admin -> Search Settings -> Default Content Access Account
Application pools: CA -> Operations -> Service Accounts -> Web Application Pool (or use gl-updateapppoolaccount if available)
iisreset /noforce
Copy SQL permissions to the new accounts. Not sure why this doesn't happen.
SSP Service Account
Farm Account
Setup Account (not copied because it doesn't own anything, just used to kick off the DB for the other accounts)
Search Service
Add accounts to DCOM not sure why this didn't happen
Component Services -> Computer -> My Computer -> DCOM Config -> IIS WAMREG Service
Farm account
Application pool accounts
Search Service
SSP Service
SSP Admin
Then the fun part. Move the server into the new domain.
Check for AAMs to see if they reference the current domain. If so, change to the new one.
Stop all SP services. Join new domain.
The computer name is a netbios name in SP, this should be painless.
Some general notes from my experience doing this:
1. There is no way to update application pool identities with stsadm (I haven't explored using Powershell). You have to go through CA -> Service Accounts to update these.
2. Some SQL logins and permissions were not created. I compared the permissions before to the permissions after and copied the ones that didn't transfer. This resolved all database access issues.
3. Had to grant permissions for the service accounts in the DCOM configuration for the IIS WAMREG admin service. I expected this to happen automatically but was not surprised given the history of CLSID 61738644-F196-11D0-9953-00C04FD919C1.
